The adsorption of a single multi-block $AB$-copolymer on a solid planar substrate is investigated by means of computer simulations and scaling analysis. It is shown that the problem can be mapped onto an effective homopolymer adsorption problem. In particular we discuss how the critical adsorption energy and the fraction of adsorbed monomers depend on the block length $M$ of sticking monomers $A$, and on the total length $N$ of the polymer chains. Also the adsorption of the random copolymers is considered and found to be well described within the framework of the annealed approximation. For a better test of our theoretical prediction, two different Monte Carlo (MC) simulation methods were employed: a) off-lattice dynamic bead-spring model, based on the standard Metropolis algorithm (MA), and b) coarse-grained lattice model using the Pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM) which enables tests for very long chains. The findings of both methods are fully consistent and in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
Using a reference system approach, we develop an analytical theory for the adsorption of random heteropolymers with exponentially decaying and/or oscillating sequence correlations on planar homogeneous surfaces. We obtain a simple equation for the adsorption-desorption transition line. This result as well as the validity of the reference system approach is tested by a comparison with numerical lattice calculations.
A linear copolymer made of two reciprocally attracting N-monomer blocks collapses to a compact phase through a novel transition, whose exponents are determined with extensive MC simulations in two and three dimensions. In the former case, an identification with the statistical geometry of suitable percolation paths allows to predict that the number of contacts between the blocks grows like $N^{9/16}$. In the compact phase the blocks are mixed and, in two dimensions, also zipped, in such a way to form a spiral, double chain structure.
We study the adsorption of ideal random lattice copolymers with correlations in the sequences on homogeneous substrates with two different methods: An analytical solution of the problem based on the constrained annealed approximation introduced by Morita in 1964 and the generating functional (GF) technique, and direct numerical simulations of lattice chains averaged over many realizations of random sequences. Both methods allow to calculate the free energy and different conformational characteristics of the adsorbed chain. The comparison of the results for random copolymers with different degr…
We consider the adsorption kinetics of a regular block-copolymer of total length $N$ and block size $M$ at a selective liquid-liquid interface in the limit of strong localization. We propose a simple analytic theory based on scaling considerations which describes the relaxation of the initial coil into a flat-shaped layer. The characteristic times for attaining equilibrium values of the gyration radius components perpendicular and parallel to the interface are predicted to scale with chain length $N$ and block length $M$ as $τ_{\perp} \propto M^{1+2ν}$ (here $ν\approx 0.6$ is the Flory exponen…
Adsorption of a symmetric (AB) random copolymer (RC) onto a symmetric (ab) random heterogeneous surface (RS) is studied in the annealed approximation by using a two-dimensional partially directed walk model of the polymer. We show that in the symmetric case, the expected a posteriori compositions of the RC and the RS have correct values (corresponding to their a priori probabilities) and do not change with the temperature, whereas second moments of monomers and sites distributions in the RC and RS change. This indicates that monomers and sites do not interconvert but only rearrange in order to…
We investigate self-avoiding walk models of linear block copolymers adsorbed at a surface and desorbed by the action of a force. We rigorously establish the dependence of the free energy on the adsorption and force parameters, and the form of the phase diagram for several cases, including $AB$-diblock copolymers and $ABA$-triblock copolymers, pulled from an end vertex and from the central vertex. Our interest in block copolymers is partly motivated by the occurrence of a novel mixed phase in a directed walk model of diblock copolymers \cite{Iliev} and we believe that this paper is the first ri…
We consider adsorption of random copolymer chains onto an interface within the model of Garel et al. Europhysics Letters 8, 9 (1989). By using the replica method the adsorption of the copolymer at the interface is mapped onto the problem of finding the ground state of a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian. To study this ground state we introduce a novel variational principle for the Green's function, which generalizes the well-known Rayleigh-Ritz method of Quantum Mechanics to nonstationary states. Minimization with an appropriate trial Green's function enables us to find the phase diagram for the …
Physico-chemical study of polymer mixtures formed by a polycation and a zwitterionic copolymer in aqueous solution and upon adsorption onto negatively charged surfaces
We study analytically and by means of an off-lattice bead-spring dynamic Monte Carlo simulation model the adsorption kinetics of a single macromolecule on a structureless flat substrate in the regime of strong physisorption. The underlying notion of a ``stem-flower'' polymer conformation, and the related mechanism of ``zipping'' during the adsorption process are shown to lead to a Fokker-Planck equation with reflecting boundary conditions for the time-dependent probability distribution function (PDF) of the number of adsorbed monomers. The theoretical treatment predicts that the mean fraction …
We examine the phase transition of polymer adsorption as well as the underlying kinetics of polymer binding from dilute solutions on a structureless solid surface. The emphasis is put on the properties of regular multiblock copolymers, characterized by block size M and total length N as well as on random copolymers with quenched composition p of sticky and neutral segments. The macromolecules are modeled as coarse-grained bead-spring chains subject to a short-ranged surface adhesive potential. Phase diagrams, showing the variation of the critical threshold for single chain adsorption in terms …
We investigate the localization of a hydrophobic - polar (HP) - regular copolymer at a selective solvent-solvent interface with emphasis on the impact of block length $M$ on the copolymer behavior. The considerations are based on simple scaling arguments and use the mapping of the problem onto a homopolymer adsorption problem. The resulting scaling relations treat the gyration radius of the copolymer chain perpendicular and parallel to the interface in terms of chain length N and block size M, as well as the selectivity parameter χ. The scaling relations differ for the case of weak and strong …
We have studied both experimentally and theoretically the surface pressure isotherms of copolymers of polystyrene-polyethyleneoxide (PS-PEO) at the air-water interface. The SCMF (single chain mean-field) theory provides a very good agreement with the experiments for the entire range of surface densities and shows that the adsorption energy per PEO monomer at the air-water interface is about one $k_B T$. In addition, the chain density profile has been calculated for a variety of surface densities, from the dilute to the very dense ones. The SCMF approach has been complemented by a mean-field ap…
We investigate numerically, using the bond-fluctuation model, the adsorption of many random AB--copolymers with excluded volume interactions at the interface between two solvents. We find two regimes, controlled by the total number of polymers. In the first (dilute) regime, the copolymers near the interface extend parallel to it, while in the second regime they extend perpendicular to it. The density at the interface and the density in the bulk depend differently on the total number of copolymers: In the first regime the density at the interface increases more rapidly then in the bulk, whereas…
It is shown that experimentally obtained isotherms of adsorption on solid substrates may be completely reconciled with Lifshitz theory when thermal fluctuations are taken into account. This is achieved within the framework of a solid-on-solid model which is solved numerically. Analysis of the fluctuation contributions observed for hydrogen adsorption onto gold substrates allows to determine the surface tension of the free hydrogen film as a function of film thickness. It is found to decrease sharply for film thicknesses below seven atomic layers.
Monte Carlo(MC) simulations produce evidence that annealed copolymers incorporating two interconverting monomers, P and H, adsorb as homopolymers with an effective adsorption energy per monomer, $ε_{eff}$, that depends on the PH equilibrium constants in the bulk and at the surface. The cross-over exponent, $Φ,$ is unmodified. The MC results on the overall PH ratio, the PH ratio at the surface and in the bulk as well as the number of adsorbed monomers are in quantitative agreement with this hypothesis and the theoretically derived $ε_{eff}$. The evidence suggests that the form of surface potent…
We study morphologies of thin-film diblock copolymers between two flat and parallel walls. The study is restricted to the weak segregation regime below the order-disorder transition temperature. The deviation from perfect lamellar shape is calculated for phases which are perpendicular and parallel to the walls. We examine the undulations of the inter material dividing surface and its angle with the walls, and find that the deviation from its unperturbed position can be much larger than in the strong segregation case. Evaluating the weak segregation stability of the lamellar phases, it is shown…

The effect of silica nanoparticles on transient microemulsion networks made of microemulsion droplets and telechelic copolymer molecules in water is studied, as a function of droplet size and concentration, amount of copolymer, and nanoparticle volume fraction. The phase diagram is found to be affected, and in particular the percolation threshold characterized by rheology is shifted upon addition of nanoparticles, suggesting participation of the particles in the network. This leads to a peculiar reinforcement behaviour of such microemulsion nanocomposites, the silica influencing both the modul…
DNA adsorption on solid or liquid surfaces is a topic of broad fundamental and applied interest. Here we study by x-ray reflectivity the adsorption of monodisperse double-stranded DNA molecules a positively-charged surface, obtained through chemical grafting of a homogeneous organicmonomolecular layer of N-(2-aminoethyl) dodecanamide on an oxide-free monocrystalline Si(111) wafer. The adsorbed dsDNA is found to embed into the soft monolayer which is deformed in the process. The surface coverage is very high and this adsorbed layer is expected to display 2D nematic ordering.
We have performed chain-growth simulations of minimalistic hybrid lattice models for polymers interacting with interfaces of attractive solid substrates in order to gain insights into the conformational transitions of the polymers in the adsorption process. Primarily focusing on the dependence of the conformational behavior on temperature and solubility we obtained pseudophase diagrams with a detailed structure of conformational subphases. In the study of hydrophobic-polar peptides in the vicinity of different types of substrates, we found a noticeable substrate specificity of the assembly of …
Chemical heterogeneity of solid surfaces disrupts the adsorption of surfactants from the bulk liquid. While its presence can hinder the performance of some formulations, bespoke chemical patterning could potentially facilitate controlled adsorption for nanolithography applications. Although some computational studies have investigated the impact of regularly patterned surfaces on surfactant adsorption, in reality many interesting surfaces are expected to be stochastically disordered and this is an area unexplored via simulations. In this paper we describe a new algorithm for the generation of …
Brownian Dynamics simulations are carried out to understand the effect of temperature and dielectric constant of the medium on microphase separation of charged-neutral diblock copolymer systems. For different dielectric media, we focus on the effect of temperature on the morphology and dynamics of model charged diblock copolymers. In this study we examine in detail a system of partially charged block copolymer consisting of 75% neutral blocks and 25% of charged blocks with 50% degree of ionization. Our investigations show that due to the presence of strong electrostatic interactions between th…
Adsorption of polymers to surfaces is crucial for understanding many fundamental processes in nature. Recent experimental studies indicate that the adsorption dynamics is dominated by non-equilibrium effects. We investigate the adsorption of a single polymer of length $N$ to a planar solid surface in the absence of hydrodynamic interactions. We find that for weak adsorption energies the adsorption time scales $ \sim N^{(1+2ν)/(1+ν)}$, where $ν$ is the Flory exponent for the polymer. We argue that in this regime the single chain adsorption is closely related to a field-driven polymer translocat…
We consider a general model of a disordered copolymer with adsorption. This includes, as particular cases, a generalization of the copolymer at a selective interface introduced by Garel et al. [Europhys. Lett. 8 (1989) 9--13], pinning and wetting models in various dimensions, and the Poland--Scheraga model of DNA denaturation. We prove a new variational upper bound for the free energy via an estimation of noninteger moments of the partition function. As an application, we show that for strong disorder the quenched critical point differs from the annealed one, for example, if the disorder distr…
We present a model addressing the orientation transition of symmetric block copolymers such as PS/PMMA on smooth and rough surfaces. The distortion free energy of parallel and perpendicular lamellar phases in contact with a rough solid surface is calculated as function of the surface roughness amplitude and wavelength, as well as the polymer lamellar periodicity (molecular weight). We find an analytical expression for the orientation transition. This expression is compared and agrees well with recent experiments done with six different polymer molecular weights and surface preparations.
Recent surveys have shown that the number of nanoparticle-based formulations actually used at the clinical level is significantly lower than expected a decade ago. One reason for this is that the nanoparticle physicochemical properties fall short for handling the complexity of biological environments and for preventing nonspecific protein adsorption. In this study, we address the issue of the interactions of plasma proteins with polymer coated surfaces. To this aim, we use a non-covalent grafting-to method to functionalize iron oxide sub-10 nm nanoparticles and iron oxide flat substrates, and …
Synperonic F-108 (generic name, 'pluronic') is a micelle forming triblock copolymer of type ABA, where A is polyethylene oxide (PEO) and B is polypropylene oxide (PPO). At high temperatures, the hydrophobicity of the PPO chains increase, and the pluronic molecules, when dissolved in an aqueous medium, self-associate into spherical micelles with dense PPO cores and hydrated PEO coronas. At appropriately high concentrations, these micelles arrange in a face centred cubic lattice to show inverse crystallization, with the samples exhibiting high-temperature crystalline and low-temperature fluidlik…
We have investigated PLLA crystallization in lamellae-forming PS-b-PLLA confined to straight cylindrical nanopores under weak confinement (nanopore diameter D / equilibrium PS-b-PLLA period L0 larger than 4.8). Molten PS-b-PLLA predominantly forms concentric lamellae along the nanopores, but intertwined helices occur even for D/L0 = 7.3. Quenching PS-b-PLLA melts below TG(PS) results in PLLA cold crystallization strictly confined by the vitrified PS domains. Above TG(PS), PLLA crystallization is templated by the PS-b-PLLA melt domain structure in the nanopore centers, while adsorption on the n…
We have linked the structural and dynamic properties in aqueous solution of amphiphilic charged diblock copolymers poly(butyl acrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid), PBA-b-PAA, synthesized by controlled radical polymerization, with the physico-chemical characteristics of the samples. Despite product imperfections, the samples self-assemble in melt and aqueous solutions as predicted by monodisperse microphase separation theory. However, the PBA core are abnormally large; the swelling of PBA cores is not due to AA (the Flory parameter chiPBA/PAA, determined at 0.25, means strong segregation), but to h-P…
Molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to study the formation of a physical (thermoreversible) gel by amphiphilic A-B-A triblock copolymers in aqueous solution. In order to mimic the structure of hydrogel-forming polypeptides employed in experiments [W.A. Petka et al., Science 281, 389 (1998)], the endblocks of the polymer chains are modeled as hydrophobic rods representing the alpha-helical part of the polypeptides whereas the central B-block is hydrophilic and semi-flexible. We have determined structural properties, such as the hydrophobic cluster-size distribution function, the g…

We propose a theoretical investigation of the physical adsorption of neutral comb-polymers with an adsorbing skeleton and non-adsorbing side-chains on a flat surface. Such polymers are particularly interesting as "dynamic coating" matrices for bio-separations, especially for DNA sequencing, capillary electrophoresis and lab-on-chips. Separation performances are increased by coating the inner surface of the capillaries with neutral polymers. This method allows to screen the surface charges, thus to prevent electro-osmosis flow and adhesion of charged macromolecules (e.g. proteins) on the capill…
Adsorption properties of chain fluids are of interest from both fundamental and industrial points of view. Density Functional Theory (DFT) based models are among the most appropriate techniques allowing to describe surface phenomena. At the same time Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT) successfully describes bulk PVT properties of chain-fluids. In this publication we have developed novel version of SAFT-DFT approach entitled RS-SAFT which is capable to describe adsorption of short hydrocarbons on geometrically rough surface. Major advantage of our theory is application to adsorption on…
The aim of the study presented here was the analysis of packings generated according to random sequential adsorption protocol consisting of identical Platonic and Archimedean solids. The computer simulations performed showed, that the highest saturated packing fraction $θ=0.40210(68)$ is reached by packings built of truncated tetrahedra and the smallest one $θ=0.35635(67)$ by packings composed of regular tetrahedra. The propagation of translational and orientational order exhibited microstructural propertied typically seen in RSA packings and the kinetics of 3 dimensional packings growth were …
A general adsorption model is developed to describe the interactions between near-wall fluid molecules and solid surface. This model serves as a framework for the theoretical modelling of the boundary slip phenomena. Based on this adsorption model, a new general model for the slip velocity of fluids on solid surfaces is introduced. The slip boundary condition at a fluid-solid interface has hitherto been considered separately for gases and liquids. In this paper, we show that the slip velocity in both gases and liquids may originate from dynamical adsorption processes at the interface. A unifie…
We study universal critical adsorption on a solid sphere and a solid cylinder in a fluid at bulk criticality, where preferential adsorption occurs. We use a local functional theory proposed by Fisher, de Gennes, and Au-Yang ($[$C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Ser. B {\bf 287}, 207 (1978)$]$ and $[$Physica {\bf 101}A, 255 (1980)$]$). We calculate the mean order parameter profile $ψ(r)$, where $r$ is the distance from the sphere center and the cylinder axis, respectively. The resultant differential equation for $ψ(r)$ is solved exactly around a sphere and numerically around a cylinder. A strong adsorptio…
We propose a direct self-assembly mechanism towards obtaining defect-free perpendicular lamellar phases of diblock copolymer (BCP) thin films. In our numerical study, a thin BCP film having a flat top surface is casted on a uni-directional corrugated solid substrate. The substrate is treated chemically and has a weak preference toward one of the two BCP components. Employing self-consistent field theory (SCFT), we find that there is an enhanced synergy between two substrate characteristics: its topography (geometrical roughness) combined with a weak surface preference. This synergy produces th…
The mechanism of fluid slip on a solid surface has been linked to surface diffusion, by which mobile adsorbed fluid molecules perform hops between adsorption sites. However, slip velocity arising from this surface hopping mechanism has been estimated to be significantly lower than that observed experimentally. In this paper, we propose a re-adsorption mechanism for fluid slip. Slip velocity predictions via this mechanism show the improved agreement with experimental measurements.
Liquid adsorption in nanoporous materials induces their deformation due to strong capillary forces. The linear relationship between the liquid pressure and the solid strain (pore-load modulus) provides an experimental technique to determine the mechanical properties of nanosized solids. Puzzling experimental results have often been reported, leading to a severe reconsideration of the mechanical properties of the thin walls, the introduction of surface stresses, and the suggestion of a mutual influence of fluid adsorption and matrix deformation. This work presents a molecular simulation examina…
This chapter deals with various aspects related to the adsorption of long chain-like macromolecules (polymers) onto solid surfaces. Physical aspects of the adsorption mechanism are elaborated mainly at thermodynamical equilibrium. The basic features needed in modeling of this adsorption are discussed. We first discuss the adsorption of a single and long polymer chain to the surface. The surface interaction is modeled by a potential well with a long-ranged attractive tail. A simple mean-field theory description is presented and the concept of polymer "blobs" is used to describe the conformation…
The determination of phase behavior and, in particular, the nature of phase transitions in two-dimensional systems is often clouded by finite size effects and by access to the appropriate thermodynamic regime. We address these issues using an alternative route to deriving the equation of state of a two-dimensional hard-core particle system, based on kinetic arguments and the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, by use of the random sequential adsorption with surface diffusion (RSAD) model. Insight into coexistence regions and phase transitions is obtained through direct visualization of the system at an…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the motion of a closely fitting nanometer-size solid sphere in a fluid-filled cylindrical nanochannel at low Reynolds numbers and for a wide range of fluid-solid interactions corresponding to different wetting situations. For fluids that are not completely wetting we observe an interesting and novel adsorption phenomenon, in which the solid sphere, that was initially moving along the center of the tube, meanders across the channel and suddenly adsorbes onto the wall. Thereafter, the adsorbed sphere either {\it sticks} to the wall and remains motio…
An efficient technique for the evaluation of the Gibbs adsorption of a liquid on a solid substrate is presented. The behavior of a water nanodroplet on a silicon surface is simulated with molecular dynamics. An external field with varying strength is applied on the system to tune the solid-liquid interfacial contact area. A linear dependence of droplet's volume on the contact area is observed. Our modified Young--Laplace equation is used to explain the influence of the Gibbs adsorption on the nanodroplet volume contraction. Fitting of the molecular dynamics results with these of an analytical …
We use first principles methods to study static and dynamical mechanical properties of the ferroelectric polymer Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymer with trifluoro ethylene (TrFE). We use density functional theory [within the generalized gradient approximation (DFT-GGA)] to calculate structures and energetics for various crystalline phases for PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE). We find that the lowest energy phase for PVDF is a non-polar crystal with a combination of trans (T) and gauche (G) bonds; in the case of the copolymer the role of the extra (bulkier) F atoms is to stabilize T bonds. …
The adsorption of a bottle-brush polymer end-grafted with one chain end of its backbone to a flat substrate surface is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of a coarse-grained model, that previously has been characterized in the bulk, assuming a dilute solution under good solvent conditions. Applying the bond fluctuation model on the simple cubic lattice, we vary the backbone chain length $N_b$ from $N_b=67$ to $N_b = 259$ effective monomeric units, the side chain length $N$ from N=6 to N=48, and the grafting density $σ=1$, i.e., parameters that correspond well to the experimentally accessible ra…
We use density functional theory to investigate adsorption of liquid mixtures on solid surfaces modified with end-grafted chains. The chains are modelled as freely joined spheres. The fluid molecules are spherical. All spherical species interact via the Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential. The Lennard-Jones (9-3) potential describes interactions of solvent molecules with the substrate. We study the relative excess adsorption isotherms, the structure of surface layer and its composition. The impact of the following parameters on adsorption is discussed: the grafting density, the grafted chain length…
The adsorption of a collagen fragment on both a hydrophobic, hydrogen-terminated and a hydrophilic, natively oxidised Si surface is investigated using all-atom molecular dynamics. While favourable direct protein-surface interactions via localised contact points characterise adhesion to the hydrophilic surface, evenly spread surface/molecule contacts and stabilisation of the helical structure occurs upon adsorption on the hydrophobic surface. In the latter case, we find that adhesion is accompanied by a mutual fit between the hydrophilic/hydrophobic pattern within the protein and the layered wa…
The qualitative solvent- and temperature-dependent conformational behavior of a peptide in the proximity of solid substrates with different adsorption properties is investigated by means of a simple lattice model. The resulting pseudophase diagrams exhibit a complex structure, which can be understood by analysing the minima of the free-energy landscape in dependence of appropriate system parameters.
A method is formulated, based on combining self-consistent field theory with dynamically corrected transition state theory, for estimating the rates of adsorption and desorption of end-constrained chains (e.g. by crosslinks or entanglements) from a polymer melt onto a solid substrate. This approach is tested on a polyethylene/graphite system, where the whole methodology is parametrized by atomistically detailed molecular simulations. For short-chain melts, which can still be addressed by molecular dynamics simulations with reasonable computational resources, the self-consistent field approach …
The experimental results presented in this paper show the influence of the elastic deformation of porous solids on the adsorption process. With p+-type porous silicon formed on highly boron doped (100) Si single crystal, we can make identical porous layers, either supported by or detached from the substrate. The pores are perpendicular to the substrate. The adsorption isotherms corresponding to these two layers are distinct. In the region preceding capillary condensation, the adsorbed amount is lower for the membrane than for the supported layer and the hysteresis loop is observed at higher pr…
Protein adsorption at the solid-liquid interface is an important phenomenon that often can be observed as a first step in biological processes. Despite its inherent importance, still relatively little is known about the underlying microscopic mechanisms. Here, using multivalent ions, we demonstrate the control of the interactions and the corresponding adsorption of net-negatively charged proteins (bovine serum albumin) at a solid-liquid interface. This is demonstrated by ellipsometry and corroborated by neutron reflectivity and quartz-crystal microbalance experiments. We show that the reentran…
We present a thermodynamically consistent mesoscopic model of protein adsorption at liquid-solid interfaces. First describing the equilibrium state under varying protein concentration of the solution and binding conditions, we predict a non-trivial (non- monotonic) dependence of the experimentally observable properties of the adsorbed layer (such as the surface density and surface coverage) on these parameters. We subsequently proceed to develop a dynamical model consistent with the equilibrium description, which qualitatively reproduces known experimental phenomena and offers a promising way …
The irreversible adsorption of polymers to a two-dimensional solid surface is studied. An operator formalism is introduced for chemisorption from a polydisperse solution of polymers which transforms the analysis of the adsorption process to a set of combinatorial problems on a two-dimensional lattice. The time evolution of the number of polymers attached and the surface area covered are calculated via a series expansion. The dependence of the final coverage on the parameters of the model (i.e. the parameters of the distribution of polymer lengths in the solution) is studied. Various methods fo…
In this work we report studies of nitrogen adsorption and desorption onto solid surfaces using computer simulations of the three dimensional Ising model, for systems with complex porous structures at the mesoscopic and microscopic levels. A hysteresis cycle between the adsorption and desorption processes appears and we find that its characteristics are dependent on the geometry of the pore and on the strength of the surface fluid interaction. We obtained also an average adsorption isotherm, which represents a combination of differently shaped pores, and shows robust jumps at certain values of …
'Soft' patchy surfactant micelles have become an additional building tool in self-assembling systems. The triblock copolymer, Pluronic F108, forms spherical micelles in aqueous solutions upon heating leading to a simple phase diagram with a micellar crystalline solid at higher temperatures and concentrations. Here we report the strong influence of end-functionalising the chain ends either with an azide or azide-DNA complex on the systems' phase behaviour. We find that the azide(N3)- functionalisation renders the chain ends weakly hydrophobic at lower temperatures, causing them to self-assemble…
