We investigate self-avoiding walk models of linear block copolymers adsorbed at a surface and desorbed by the action of a force. We rigorously establish the dependence of the free energy on the adsorption and force parameters, and the form of the phase diagram for several cases, including $AB$-diblock copolymers and $ABA$-triblock copolymers, pulled from an end vertex and from the central vertex. Our interest in block copolymers is partly motivated by the occurrence of a novel mixed phase in a directed walk model of diblock copolymers \cite{Iliev} and we believe that this paper is the first rigorous treatment of a self-avoiding walk model of the situation.
Lattice model of directed self avoiding walk has been solved analytically to investigate adsorption desorption phase transition behaviour of a semiflexible sequential copolymer chain on a two dimensional impenetrable surface perpendicular to the preferred direction of the walk of the copolymer chain in three dimensions. The stiffness of the chain has been accounted by introducing an energy barrier for each bend in the walk of the copolymer chain. Exact value of adsorption desorption transition points have been determined using generating function method for the cases in which one type of monom…
An extensive study of single block copolymer knots containing two kinds of monomers $A$ and $B$ is presented. The knots are in a solution and their monomers are subjected to short range interactions that can be attractive or repulsive. In view of possible applications in medicine and the construction of intelligent materials, it is shown that several features of copolymer knots can be tuned by changing the monomer configuration. A very fast and abrupt swelling with increasing temperature is obtained in certain multiblock copolymers, while the size and the swelling behavior at high temperatures…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the hysteresis in unzipping of a double stranded block copolymer DNA with $-A_n B_n-$ repeat units. Here $A$ and $B$ represent two different types of base pairs having two- and three-bonds, respectively, and $2n$ represents the number of such base pairs in a unit. The end of the DNA are subjected to a time dependent periodic force with frequency ($ω$) and amplitude ($g_0$) keeping the other end fixed. We find that the equilibrium force-temperature phase diagram for the static force is independent of the DNA sequence. For the periodic force case, the resu…
Diblock copolymers blended with homopolymer may self-assemble into spherical, cylindrical or lamellar aggregates. Transitions between these structures may be driven by varying the homopolymer molecular weight or the molecular weight or composition of the diblock. Using self-consistent field theory (SCFT), we reproduce these effects. Our results are compared with X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy measurements by Kinning, Winey and Thomas and good agreement is found, although the tendency to form cylindrical and lamellar structures is sometimes overestimated due to our neglec…
A linear copolymer made of two reciprocally attracting N-monomer blocks collapses to a compact phase through a novel transition, whose exponents are determined with extensive MC simulations in two and three dimensions. In the former case, an identification with the statistical geometry of suitable percolation paths allows to predict that the number of contacts between the blocks grows like $N^{9/16}$. In the compact phase the blocks are mixed and, in two dimensions, also zipped, in such a way to form a spiral, double chain structure.
A microscopic theory for coarse graining diblock copolymers into dumbbells of interacting soft colloidal particles has been developed, based on the solution of liquid-state integral equations. The Ornstein-Zernike equation is solved to provide a mesoscopic description of the diblock copolymer system at the level of block centers of mass, and at the level of polymer centers of mass. Analytical forms of the total correlation functions for block-block, block-monomer, and center-of-mass pairs are obtained for a liquid of structurally symmetric diblock copolymers as a function of temperature, densi…
The adsorption of a single multi-block $AB$-copolymer on a solid planar substrate is investigated by means of computer simulations and scaling analysis. It is shown that the problem can be mapped onto an effective homopolymer adsorption problem. In particular we discuss how the critical adsorption energy and the fraction of adsorbed monomers depend on the block length $M$ of sticking monomers $A$, and on the total length $N$ of the polymer chains. Also the adsorption of the random copolymers is considered and found to be well described within the framework of the annealed approximation. For a …
We study the effect of a random Flory-Huggins parameter in a symmetric diblock copolymer melt which is expected to occur in a copolymer where one block is near its structural glass transition. In the clean limit the microphase segregation between the two blocks causes a weak, fluctuation induced first order transition to a lamellar state. Using a renormalization group approach combined with the replica trick to treat the quenched disorder, we show that beyond a critical disorder strength, that depends on the length of the polymer chain, the character of the transition is changed. The system be…
In this work, Flory-Huggins phase diagrams for correlated random copolymers with realistic chain lengths are calculated. This is achieved in two steps. At first we derive a distribution function of copolymer chains with respect to composition and blockiness. Then we used the method of moments, which was developed by Sollich and Cates [Sollich, P.; Cates, M. E.; Phys. Rev. Lett. 1998, 80, 1365-1368] for polydisperse systems, to reduce the number of degrees of freedom of the computational problem and calculate phase diagrams. We explored how location of transition points and composition of coexi…
We derive the mean-field theory of disordered block-copolymers composed of two monomeric species, combining Edwards' functional method with the replica technique of disordered systems. In the absence of disorder we recover the canonical self-consistent field theory of inhomogeneous polymers. In the presence of sequence disorder the theory can be regarded as a comprehensive, novel self-consistent treatment of copolymer melts, unifying the weak- and strong-inhomogeneous regimes. In particular, we study the stability of the microphase separation transition in a melt of diblock-copolymers, compose…
We study analytically the intricate phase behavior of cross-linked $AB$ diblock copolymer melts, which can undergo two main phase transitions due to quenched random constraints: Gelation, i.e., spatially random localization of polymers forming a system-spanning cluster, is driven by increasing the number parameter $μ$ of irreversible, type-selective cross-links between random pairs of $A$ blocks. Self-assembly into a periodic pattern of $A$/$B$-rich microdomains (microphase separation) is controlled by the $AB$ incompatibility $χ$ inversely proportional to temperature. Our model aims to captur…
The thermal properties of coarse grained knotted polymers containing two kinds of monomers $A$ and $B$ fluctuating in a solution are investigated on a simple cubic lattice using the Wang-Landau MC algorithm. These knots have a more complex phase diagram than knots formed by homopolymers, including the possible presence of metastable states. Two different setups are considered: i) charged block copolymers in a ion solution and ii) neutral copolymers with the $A$ monomers above and the $B$ monomers below the theta point. A precise interpretation of the peaks observed in the plots of the specific…
We propose a simple scaling theory describing the variation of the mean first passage time (MFPT) $τ(N,M)$ of a regular block copolymer of chain length $N$ and block size $M$ which is dragged through a selective liquid-liquid interface by an external field $B$. The theory predicts a non-Arrhenian $τ$ vs. $B$ relationship which depends strongly on the size of the blocks, $M$, and rather weakly on the total polymer length, $N$. The overall behavior is strongly influenced by the degree of selectivity between the two solvents $χ$. The variation of $τ(N,M)$ with $N$ and $M$ in the regimes of weak a…
We present a self-consistent field theory (SCFT) study of spherical micelle formation in a blend of poly(styrene-butadiene) diblocks and homopolystyrene. The micelle core radii, corona thicknesses and critical micelle concentrations are calculated as functions of the polymer molecular weights and the composition of the diblocks. Our results are compared with an earlier scaling theory and with X-ray scattering data. The agreement between self-consistent field theory and experiment for the micelle structure is sometimes quantitative and is generally more successful than scaling theory. For copol…
We consider the adsorption kinetics of a regular block-copolymer of total length $N$ and block size $M$ at a selective liquid-liquid interface in the limit of strong localization. We propose a simple analytic theory based on scaling considerations which describes the relaxation of the initial coil into a flat-shaped layer. The characteristic times for attaining equilibrium values of the gyration radius components perpendicular and parallel to the interface are predicted to scale with chain length $N$ and block length $M$ as $τ_{\perp} \propto M^{1+2ν}$ (here $ν\approx 0.6$ is the Flory exponen…
The localization kinetics of a regular block-copolymer of total length $N$ and block size $M$ at a selective liquid-liquid interface is studied in the limit of strong segregation between hydrophobic and polar segments in the chain. We propose a simple analytic theory based on scaling arguments which describes the relaxation of the initial coil into a flat-shaped layer for the cases of both Rouse and Zimm dynamics. For Rouse dynamics the characteristic times for attaining equilibrium values of the gyration radius components perpendicular and parallel to the interface are predicted to scale with…
We inquire about the possible coexistence of macroscopic and microstructured phases in random Q-block copolymers built of incompatible monomer types A and B with equal average concentrations. In our microscopic model, one block comprises M identical monomers. The block-type sequence distribution is Markovian and characterized by the correlation λ. Upon increasing the incompatibility χ (by decreasing temperature) in the disordered state, the known ordered phases form: for λ > λ_c, two coexisting macroscopic A- and B-rich phases, for λ < λ_c, a microstructured (lamellar) phase with wave number k…
We study the effects of chirality at the segment scale on the thermodynamics of block copolymer melts using self consistent field theory. In linear diblock melts where segments of one block prefer a twisted, or cholesteric, texture, we show that melt assembly is critically sensitive to the ratio of random coil size to the preferred pitch of cholesteric twist. For weakly-chiral melts (large pitch), mesophases remain achiral, while below a critical value of pitch, two mesocopically chiral phases are stable: an undulated lamellar phase; and a phase of hexagonally-ordered helices. We show that the…
We consider the micellization of block copolymers in solution, employing self consistent field theory with an additional constraint that permits the examination of intermediate structures. From the information for an isolated micelle (structure, binding energy, free energy) we describe how the global thermodynamics of these systems can be obtained, which can be used to build a realistic phase diagram; the role of translational entropy must be addressed in this regard.
The coil-globule transition has been studied for A-B copolymer chains both by means of lattice Monte Carlo simulations using bond fluctuation algorithm and by a numerical self-consistent field method. Copolymer chains of fixed length with A and B monomeric units with regular, random and specially designed (protein-like) primary sequences have been investigated. The dependence of the transition temperature on the AB sequence has been analyzed. A protein-like copolymer is more stable than a copolymer with statistically random sequence. The transition is more sharpe for random copolymers. It is f…
A phenomenological mean-field theory is used to investigate the properties of solvent-diluted di-block copolymers (BCP), in which the two BCP components (A and B) form a variety of phases that are diluted by a solvent (S). Using this approach, we model mixtures of di-block copolymers and a solvent and obtained the corresponding critical behavior. In the low solvent limit, we find how the critical point depends on the solvent density. Due to the non-linear nature of the coupling between the A/B and BCP/solvent concentrations, the A/B modulation induces modulations in the polymer-solvent relativ…
We study thin films of A/B diblock copolymer in a lamellar phase confined between two parallel plates (electrodes) that impose a constant voltage across the film. The weak-segregation limit is explored via a Ginzburg-Landau-like free-energy expansion. We focus on the relative stability of parallel and perpendicular orientations of the lamellar phase, and how they are affected by variation of four experimental controllable parameters: addition of free ions, the difference in ionic solubilities between the A and B blocks, the dielectric contrast between the A/B blocks, and the preferential inter…
We study conformations assumed by single diblock star copolymers in a poor solvent by means of the Gaussian variational theory and Monte Carlo simulation in continuous space. Cases of stars with internal and external hydrophobic blocks are analysed. While in the former case the collapsed state has an obvious micellar shape, the latter case exhibits two nontrivial conformational structures. Apart from the equilibrium state of a globular hydrophobic core with hydrophilic daisy loops, one also finds here a metastable state of outstretched hydrophilic blocks with hydrophobic subglobules at their e…
For a model of DNA denaturation, exponents describing the distributions of denaturated loops and unzipped end-segments are determined by exact enumeration and by Monte Carlo simulations in two and three dimensions. The loop distributions are consistent with first order thermal denaturation in both cases. Results for end-segments show a coexistence of two distinct power laws in the relative distributions, which is not foreseen by a recent approach in which DNA is treated as a homogeneous network of linear polymer segments. This unexpected feature, and the discrepancies with such an approach, ar…
