Chemical heterogeneity of solid surfaces disrupts the adsorption of surfactants from the bulk liquid. While its presence can hinder the performance of some formulations, bespoke chemical patterning could potentially facilitate controlled adsorption for nanolithography applications. Although some computational studies have investigated the impact of regularly patterned surfaces on surfactant adsorption, in reality many interesting surfaces are expected to be stochastically disordered and this is an area unexplored via simulations. In this paper we describe a new algorithm for the generation of randomly disordered chemically heterogeneous surfaces and use it to explore the adsorption behaviour of four model nonionic surfactants. Using novel analysis methods we interrogate both the global surface coverage (adsorption isotherm) and behaviour in localised regions. We observe trends in adsorption characteristics as surfactant size, head/tail ratio, and surface topology are varied and connect these to underlying physical mechanisms. We believe that our methods and approach will prove useful to researchers seeking to tailor surface patterns to calibrate nonionic surfactant adsorption.
The kinetics of non-ionic surfactant adsorption at a fluid-fluid interface from a micellar solution is considered theoretically. Our model takes into account the effect of micelle relaxation on the diffusion of the free surfactant molecules. It is shown that non-ionic surfactants undergo either a diffusion or a kinetically limited adsorption according to the characteristic relaxation time of the micelles. This gives a new interpretation for the observed dynamical surface tension of micellar solutions.
Metallic ion adsorption on surfactant aggregates were studied with Molecular dynamics simulations. Using ionic salts, such as lead sulfate (PbSO$_4$) and aluminum sulfate [Al$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$], adsorption of lead and aluminum were investigated at different salt concentrations and different surfactant aggregates (micelles) sizes. The micelles were constructed with spherical shapes composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) anionic surfactants. The electrostatic interactions between the positive ions and the negative SDS headgroups promote capture of the metal particles on the aggregate surface. Me…
The study of competitive and cooperative adsorption of functionalized molecules such as polymers, rheology modifiers and surfactant molecules on colloidal particles immersed in a solvent is undertaken using coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The results show that a complex picture emerges from the simulations, one where dispersants and surfactants adsorb cooperatively up to certain concentrations, on colloidal particles, but as the surfactant concentration increases it leads to dispersant desorption. The presence of rheology modifying agents in the colloidal dispersion …
Self-assembly structures of gemini surfactants are characterized, among others, for their low CMC. This characteristic could be due to great hydrophobic parts in their molecular structures. That availability could imply great stability of self-assembly structures or monolayers absorbed in an interface. The micellization behavior of two cationic gemini surfactants, α,ω-bis(S-alkyl dimethylammonium) alkane bromides, were studied by a modelization of dynamic surface tension (DST) experimental data and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) measurements. The adsorption data at the air/water interf…
Study of the Liquid/Vapor Interfacial Properties of Concentrated Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures Using Surface Tensiometry and Neutron Reflectometry: Equilibrium, Adsorption Kinetics and Dilational Rheology
Emulsion Stability Simulations (ESS) of deformable droplets are used to study the influence of the time-dependent adsorption on the coalescence time of a 200-$μ$m drop of soybean oil pressed by buoyancy against a planar water/oil interface. The interface is represented by a 5000-$μ$m drop of oil fixed in the space. The movement of the small drop is determined by the interaction forces between the drops, the buoyancy force, and its thermal interaction with the solvent. The interaction forces depend on the surface concentration of surfactant molecules at the oil/water interfaces. Assuming diffus…
We present a model treating the kinetics of adsorption of soluble surface-active molecules at the interface between an aqueous solution and another fluid phase. The model accounts for both the diffusive transport inside the solution and the kinetics taking place at the interface using a free-energy formulation. In addition, it offers a general method of calculating dynamic surface tensions. Non-ionic surfactants are shown, in general, to undergo a diffusion-limited adsorption, in accord with experimental findings.
The adsorption at the interface between an aqueous solution of several surface-active agents and another fluid (air or oil) phase is addressed theoretically. We derive the kinetic equations from a variation of the interfacial free energy, solve them numerically and provide an analytic solution for the simple case of a linear adsorption isotherm. Calculating asymptotic solutions analytically, we find the characteristic time scales of the adsorption process and observe the behavior of the system at various temporal stages. In particular, we relate the kinetic behavior of the mixture to the prope…
Adsorption of small amphiphilic molecules occurs in various biological and technological processes, sometimes desired, the other times unwanted (e.g., contamination). Surface-active molecules preferentially bind to interfaces and affect their wetting properties. We study the adsorption of short-chained alcohols (simple surfactants) to the water-vapor interface and solid surfaces of various polarities using molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis enables us to establish a theoretical expression for the adsorption coefficient, which exponentially scales with the molecular surface area and t…
We review a new theoretical approach to the kinetics of surfactant adsorption at fluid-fluid interfaces. It yields a more complete description of the kinetics both in the aqueous solution and at the interface, deriving all equations from a free-energy functional. It also provides a general method to calculate dynamic surface tensions. For non-ionic surfactants the results coincide with previous models. Common non-ionic surfactants are shown to undergo diffusion-limited adsorption, in agreement with experiments. Strong electrostatic interactions in salt-free ionic surfactant solutions are found…
We review the free energy approach to the kinetics of surfactant adsorption at fluid/fluid interfaces. The formalism is applied to several systems. For non-ionic surfactant solutions the results coincide with previous models while indicating their limits of validity. We study the case of surfactant mixtures, focusing on the relation between the mixture kinetics and the properties of its individual constituents. Strong electrostatic interactions in salt-free ionic surfactant solutions drastically modify the adsorption kinetics. In this case the theory accounts for experimental results which cou…
Concentrated fabric conditioners are water-based formulations containing 10 wt. % of cationic surfactants that are deposited on textile fibers during the rinse cycle in a washing machine to make them smoother and softer to touch. In topical formulations, the concentration of cationic surfactants is reduced by half, this reduction being compensated by the addition of environment-friendly polysaccharides. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and ellipsometry, the deposition of formulations with or without polysaccharides on model cellulose sub…
The self-assembly of two nonionic surfactants, pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and n-dodecyl-ß-maltoside (ß-C12G2), in the presence of a purpose-synthesized silica sol of uniform particle size (diameter 16 nm) has been studied by adsorption measurements, dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) using a H2O/D2O mixture matching the silica, in order to highlight the structure of the surfactant aggregates. For C12E5 strong aggregative adsorption onto the silica beads, with a high plateau value of the adsorption isotherm above the CMC was found. SANS measur…
When the theoretical values of the interfacial tension -resulting from the homogeneous distribution of ionic surfactant molecules amongst the interface of emulsion drops- are plotted against the total surfactant concentration, they produce a curve comparable to the Gibbs adsorption isotherm. However, the actual isotherm takes into account the solubility of the surfactant in the aqueous bulk phase. Hence, assuming that the total surfactant population is only distributed among the available oil/water interfaces, one can calculate what surface concentration is necessary to reproduce the experimen…
The structure of an adsorption octadecanamide film at the planar toluene-water interface is studied by X-ray reflectometry using synchrotron radiation with photon energy of 15 keV. The electron density (polarizability) profiles, according to which the interface structure is determined by the pH level in the water subphase, are reconstructed from experimental data with the help of a model-independent approach. For a high pH~11, the adsorption film is a crystalline octadecanamide monolayer with a thickness of about 2.6 nm, in which aliphatic tails of surfactant are extended along the normal to t…
The role of ionic interactions between sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and sapphire surfaces have been studied using specular neutron reflection to determine the structure and composition of adsorbed surfactant layers. Increasing the pH of the solution from 3 to 9 reduces the adsorption by reversing the charge of the alumina. This occurs at lower pH for the R-plane (1 -1 0 2) than the C-plane (0 0 0 1), corresponding to the different points of zero charge. The largest surface excess is about 6.5 micromol m-2, the thickness of the adsorbed layer is about 24 Angstrom and it contains roughly 20% wat…
We study the scaling of adsorption isotherms of polyacrylic dispersants on generic surfaces of metallic oxides $XnOm$ as a function of the number of monomeric units, using Electrostatic Dissipative Particle Dynamics simulations. The simulations show how the scaling properties in these systems emerge and how the isotherms rescale to a universal curve, reproducing reported experimental results. The critical exponent for these systems is also obtained, in perfect agreement with the scaling theory of deGennes. Some important applications are mentioned.

The adsorption of polymer and surfactant molecules onto colloidal particles or droplets in solution can be characterized non-destructively by scattering techniques. In a first part, the general framework of Dynamic Light Scattering, Small Angle Neutron and X-ray Scattering for the determination of the structure of adsorbed layers, and namely of the density profile, is presented. We then review recent studies of layers of the model polymer poly(ethylene oxide), as homopolymer or part of a block copolymer. In this field, scattering with contrast variation has been shown to be a powerful tool to …
A theory is presented which quantitatively accounts for the cooperative adsorption of cationic surfactants to anionic polyelectrolytes. For high salt concentration we find that the critical adsorption concentration (CAC) is a bilinear function of the polyion monomer and salt concentrations, with the coefficients dependent only on the type of surfactant used. The results presented in the paper might be useful for designing more efficient gene delivery systems.
A nonionic surfactant, the tri-ethylene glycol mono n-decyl ether (C10E3), characterized by its lamellar phase state, was introduced in the interlayer of a Na-montmorillonite clay at several concentrations. The synthesized organoclays were characterized by Small Angle X-Ray Scattering in conjunction with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and adsorption isotherms. Experiments showed that a bilayer of C10E3 was intercalated into the interlayer space of the naturally exchanged Na-montmorillonite, resulting in the aggregation of the lyotropic liquid crystal state in the lamellar phase. This…
Substantial experimental, theoretical, as well as numerical effort has been invested to understand the effect of boundary slippage in microfluidic devices. However, even though such devices are becoming increasingly important in scientific, medical, and industrial applications, a satisfactory understanding of the phenomenon is still lacking. This is due to the extremely precise experiments needed to study the problem and the large number of tunable parameters in such systems. In this paper we apply a recently introduced algorithm to implement hydrophobic fluid-wall interactions in the lattice …
In this paper we study the main surface characteristics which control the foamability of solutions of various surfactants. Experiments with anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants with different head groups and chain lengths are performed in a wide concentration range, from 0.001 mM to 100 mM. The electrolyte concentration is also varied from 0 up to 100 mM. For all surfactants studied, three regions in the dependence of the foamability, VA, on the logarithm of surfactant concentration, lgCS, are observed. In Region 1, VA is very low and depends weakly on CS. In Region 2, VA increases steep…
The adsorption kinetics of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at the air-water interface has been studied by the maximum bubble pressure method at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration. At short times, the adsorption is diffusion-limited. At longer times, the surface tension shows an intermediate plateau and can no longer be accounted for by a diffusion limited process. Instead, adsorption appears kinetically controlled and slowed down by an adsorption barrier. A Poisson-Boltzmann theory for the electrostatic repulsion from the surface does not fully ac…
Surfactant choice is key in starting the phenomena of artificial morphogenesis, the bottom-up growth of geometric particles from cooled emulsion droplets, as well as the bottom-up self-assembly of rechargeable microswimmer robots from similar droplets. The choice of surfactant is crucial for the formation of a plastic phase at the oil-water interface, for the kinetics, and for the onset temperature of these processes. But further details are needed to control these processes for bottom-up manufacturing and understand their molecular mechanisms. Still unknown are the minimum concentration of th…
The interfacial tension between immiscible liquids is studied as a function of a model linear surfactant length and concentration using coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics numerical simulations. The adsorption isotherms obtained from the simulations are found to be in agreement with Langmuir model. The reduction of the interfacial tension with increasing surfactant concentration is found to display some common characteristics for all the values of chain length modeled, with our predictions being in agreement with Szyszkowski equation. Lastly, the critical micelle concentration is pre…
A Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented on surfactants in polar binary mixtures, which aggregate at an interface due to the amphiphilic interaction. They can be ionic surfactants coexisting with counterions. Including the solvation and image interactions and accounting for a finite volume fraction of the surfactant, we obtain their distributions and the electric potential around an interface in equilibrium. The surface tension is also calculated. The distribution of the adsorbed ionic surfactant is narrower than that of the counterions. The adsorption is marked for hydrophilic and hydrophobic pa…
We report the presence of a correlation between the bulk and interfacial properties of electrostatic coacervate complexes. Complexes were obtained by co-assembly between cationic-neutral diblocks and oppositely charged surfactant micelles or 7 nm cerium oxide nanoparticles. Light scattering and reflectometry measurements revealed that the hybrid nanoparticle aggregates were more stable both through dilution and rinsing (from either a polystyrene or a silica surfaces) than their surfactant counterparts. These findings were attributed to a marked difference in critical association concentration …
We propose a model for the liquid-liquid phase transition observed in osmotic pressure measurements of certain charged lamellae-forming amphiphiles. The model free energy combines mean-field electrostatic and phenomenological non-electrostatic interactions, while the number of dissociated counterions is treated as a variable degree of freedom that is determined self-consistently. The model, therefore, joins two well-known theories: the Poisson-Boltzmann theory for ionic solutions between charged lamellae, and Langmuir-Frumkin-Davies adsorption isotherm modified to account for charged adsorbing…
We investigate theoretically the phase diagram of an insoluble charged surfactant monolayer in contact with a semi-dilute polyelectrolyte solution (of opposite charge). The polyelectrolytes are assumed to have long-range and attractive (electrostatic) interaction with the surfactant molecules. In addition, we introduce a short-range (chemical) interaction which is either attractive or repulsive. The surfactant monolayer can have a lateral phase separation between dilute and condensed phases. Three different regimes of the coupled system are investigated depending on system parameters. A regime…
Molecular dynamics simulations to study the behaviour of anionic (Sodium Dodecylsulfate, SDS) and nonionic (Monooleate of Sorbitan, SPAN80) surfactants close to a SiO$_{2}$ (silicon dioxide) surface were carried out. Simulations showed that a water layer was first adsorbed on the surface and then the surfactants were attached on that layer. Moreover, it was observed that water behaviour close to the surface influenced the surfactant adsorption since a semi-spherical micelle was formed on the SiO$_{2}$ surface with SDS molecules whereas a cylindrical micelle was formed with SPAN80 molecules. Ad…
We report the co-assembly and adsorption properties of coacervate complexes made from polyelectrolyte-neutral block copolymers and oppositely charged nanocolloids. The nanocolloids put under scrutiny were ionic surfactant micelles and highly charged 7 nm cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles. Static and dynamic light scattering was used to investigate the microstructure and stability of the organic and hybrid complexes. The microstructure of the CeO2-based complexes was resolved using cryogenic transmission electronic microscopy (Cryo-TEM), and it revealed that the cores were clusters made from de…
Experiments indicate that microdroplets undergoing micellar solubilization in the bulk of surfactant solution may excite Marangoni flows and self-propel spontaneously. Surprisingly, self-propulsion emerges even when the critical micelle concentration is exceeded and the Marangoni effect should be saturated. To explain this, we propose a novel model of a dissolving active droplet that is based on two fundamental assumptions: (a) products of the solubilization may inhibit surfactant adsorption; (b) solubilization prevents the formation of a monolayer of surfactant molecules at the droplet interf…
The structure of ionic adsorption layers is studied via a proper thermodynamic treatment of the electrostatic and non-electrostatic interactions between the surfactant ions as well as of the effect of thermodynamic non-locality. The analysis is also applied to phase transitions into the ionic adsorption layer, which interfere further with the oscillatory-diffusive structure of the electric double layer and hydrodynamic stability of squeezing waves in thin liquid films.
The Jones-Ray effect is an anomalous minimum in the surface tension of aqueous electrolytes at millimolar salt concentrations. We experimentally demonstrated that intentionally added ionic surfactants induce the Jones-Ray effect. The one-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmann theory, including the effect of surfactant adsorption and salt depletion, excellently agrees with the obtained experimental data. All the parameters of the ion-specific surface affinities used in the theory are consistent with previous experiments. These results strongly suggest that the Jones-Ray effect observed so far has been i…
Colloidosomes provide a possibility to encapsulate oily substances in water in the form of core-in-shell structures. In this study, we produced microcapsules with shell from colloidal particles, where the interparticle openings are blocked by mixed layers from polymer and surfactant that prevent the leakage of cargo molecules. The particles and polymer play the role of bricks and mortar. We used hydrophilic silica particles, which were partially hydrophobized by the adsorption of potassium oleate to enable them to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Various polymers were tested to select the most a…
There is currently a renewed interest for improving household and personal care formulations to provide more environment friendly products. Fabric conditioners used as softeners have to fulfill a number of stability and biodegradability requirements. They should also display significant adsorption on cotton in the conditions of use. The quantification of surfactant adsorption remains however difficult because the fabric woven structure is complex and deposited amounts are generally small. Here we propose a method to evaluate cellulose/sur-factant interactions with increased detection sensitivi…
In this paper we propose equations of motion for the dynamics of liquid films of surfactant suspensions that consist of a general gradient dynamics framework based on an underlying energy functional. This extends the gradient dynamics approach to dissipative non-equilibrium thin film systems with several variables, and casts their dynamic equations into a form that reproduces Onsager's reciprocity relations. We first discuss the general form of gradient dynamics models for an arbitrary number of fields and discuss simple well-known examples with one or two fields. Next, we develop the gradient…
A systematically designed study has been conducted to understand and clearly demarcate the degree of contribution by the constituting elements to the surface tension of nanocolloids. The effects of elements such as surfactants, particles and the combined effects of these on the interfacial tension of these complex fluids are studied employing pendant drop shape analysis method by fitting Young Laplace equation. Only particle has shown considerable increase in surface tension with particle concentration in a polar medium like DI water whereas only marginal effect particles on surface tension in…
We present a realization of a fast interfacial Marangoni microswimmer by a half-spherical alginate capsule at the air-water interface, which diffusively releases water-soluble spreading molecules (weak surfactants such as polyethylene glycol (PEG)), which act as "fuel" by modulating the air-water interfacial tension. For a number of different fuels, we can observe symmetry breaking and spontaneous propulsion although the alginate particle and emission are isotropic. The propulsion mechanism is similar to soap or camphor boats, which are, however, typically asymmetric in shape or emission to se…
Surface phase transitions in surfactant adsorption layers are known to affect the dynamic properties of foams and to induce surface nucleation in freezing emulsion drops. Recently, these transitions were found to play a role in several other phenomena, opening new opportunities for controlling foam and emulsion properties. This review presents a brief outlook of the emerging opportunities in this area. Three topics are emphasized: (1) The use of surfactant mixtures for inducing phase transitions on bubble surfaces in foams; (2) The peculiar properties of natural surfactants saponins which form…
