A theory is presented which quantitatively accounts for the cooperative adsorption of cationic surfactants to anionic polyelectrolytes. For high salt concentration we find that the critical adsorption concentration (CAC) is a bilinear function of the polyion monomer and salt concentrations, with the coefficients dependent only on the type of surfactant used. The results presented in the paper might be useful for designing more efficient gene delivery systems.
Subject of this work is to investigate the kinetics of mass transfer of volatile amphiphiles from their vapors to aqueous drops, and from the saturated aqueous drop solutions to air. The used amphiphiles are benzyl acetate, linalool, and citronellol. The adequate theoretical processing of the equilibrium surface tension isotherms is applied to construct the two-dimensional equation of state, which relates the surface tension to the adsorption at the interface. The measured surface tension relaxations with time in the regimes of adsorption from vapor and evaporation from drop combined with the …
In the present study, we have investigated, using Monte Carlo simulations (MC), the adsorption of polyelectrolytes on the charged nanopatterned surfaces. Different surface patterns were considered and we noticed that the amount of adsorption is directly dependent on the size of the domains. Also in the case of checkerboard configuration, it was observed that the polyelectrolytes are aligned along the diagonal of square domains.
Understanding and controlling polyelectrolyte adsorption onto carbon nanotubes is a fundamen- tal challenge in nanotechology. Polyelectrolytes have been shown to stabilise nanotube suspensions through adsorbing onto the nanotube surface, and polyelectrolyte-coated nanotubes are emerging as building blocks for complex and addressable self-assembly. The conventional wisdom suggests that polyelectrolyte adsorption onto nanotubes is driven by specific chemical or van der Waals interac- tions. We develop a simple mean-field model and show that ion-image attraction is a significant effect for adsorp…
The results of a study that helps understand the mechanisms of adsorption of polyelectrolytes on particles, using numerical simulation methods, specifically the one known as dissipative particle dynamics are reported here. The adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes of two different polymerization degrees interacting with two types of surfaces, one made of gold and the other of silica is predicted and compared. We find that a more negatively charged wall does not necessarily adsorb more cationic polyelectrolytes because the electrostatic repulsion between the wall and the polyelectrolytes is s…
In many biological processes highly charged biomolecules are adsorbed into oppositely charged surfaces of macroions and membranes. They form strongly correlated structures close to the surface which can not be explained by the conventional Poisson-Boltzmann theory. Many of the flexible biomolecules can be described by Gaussian polymers. In this work strong coupling theory is used to study the adsorption of highly charged Gaussian polyelectrolytes. Two cases of adsorptions are considered, when the Gaussian polyelectrolytes are confined a) by one charged wall, and b) between two charged walls. T…
We explore, using the recently developed efficient Monte Carlo simulation method, the interaction of an anionic polyelectrolyte solution with a like-charged dielectric surface. In addition to polyions, the solution also contains salt with either monovalent, divalent, or trivalent counterions. In agreement with recent experimental observations, we find that multivalent counterions can lead to strong adsorption of polyions onto the surface. On the other hand, addition of a 1:1 electrolyte diminishes the adsorption induced by the multivalent counterions. Dielectric discontinuity at the interface …
We study the adsorption-desorption transition of polyelectrolyte chains onto planar, cylindrical and spherical surfaces with arbitrarily high surface charge densities by massive Monte Carlo computer simulations. We examine in detail how the well known scaling relations for the threshold transition-demarcating the adsorbed and desorbed domains of a polyelectrolyte near weakly charged surfaces-are altered for highly charged interfaces. In virtue of high surface potentials and large surface charge densities, the Debye-Hueckel approximation is often not feasible and the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann…
Based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and analytical considerations we study the electrostatically driven adsorption of flexible polyelectrolyte chains onto charged Janus nanospheres. These net-neutral colloids are composed of two equally but oppositely charged hemispheres. The critical binding conditions for polyelectrolyte chains are analysed as function of the radius of the Janus particle and its surface charge density, as well as the salt concentration in the ambient solution. Specifically for the adsorption of finite-length polyelectrolyte chains onto Janus nanoparticles, we demonstr…
The charge of a polyelectrolyte (PE) controls myriads of phenomena in biology, biotechnology, and materials science, but still remains elusive from an understanding. Considering the adsorption of counterions on an isolated PE chain, an analytical expression for the effective charge - valid for all chain flexibility, for variable salt, in good solvents at all conditions, in poor solvents in the expanded (coil) state away from the critical point, and for gels, brushes and other PE systems in their expanded state - is derived. Phase boundaries and the critical point for the I-st order collapse tr…

We study, using extensive Monte Carlos simulations, the behavior of cationic polyelectrolytes near hydrophobic surfaces in solutions containing Hofmeister salts. The Hofmeister anions are divided into kosmotropes and chaotropes. Near a hydrophobic surface, the chaotropes lose their solvation sheath and become partially adsorbed to the interface, while the kosmotropes remain strongly hydrated and are repelled from the interface. If the polyelectrolyte solution contains chaotropic anions, a significant adsorption of polyions to the surface is also observed. On the other hand, the kosmotropic ani…
What are the fundamental laws for the adsorption of charged polymers onto oppositely charged surfaces, for convex, planar, and concave geometries? This question is at the heart of surface coating applications, various complex formation phenomena, as well as in the context of cellular and viral biophysics. It has been a long-standing challenge in theoretical polymer physics; for realistic systems the quantitative understanding is however often achievable only by computer simulations. In this study, we present the findings of such extensive Monte-Carlo in silico experiments for polymer-surface a…
The adsorption of three different polycations at the negatively charged surface of tubular J-aggregates of the amphiphilic cyanine dye 3,3'-bis(2-sulfopropyl)-5,5',6,6'-tetrachloro-1,1'-dioctylbenzimidacarbocyanine (C8S3) is investigated by means of cryogenic electron microscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy. All three polycations could be adsorbed at the aggregates without flocculation or precipitation when added in molar amounts of monomers sufficiently smaller than of the dye molecules. Preferably the aggregates are either coated by the polycations in total or left completely uncoated…
The electrostatic complexation between DOTAP-DOPC unilamellar liposomes and an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte (NaPA) has been investigated in a wide range of the liposome surface charge density. We systematically characterized the "reentrant condensation" and the charge inversion of polyelectrolyte-decorated liposomes by means of dynamic light scattering and electrophoresis. We explored the stability of this model polyelectrolyte/colloid system by fixing each time the charge of the bare liposomes and by changing two independent control parameters of the suspensions: the polyelectrolyte/col…
The adsorption of DNA or other polyelectrolyte molecules on charged membranes is a recurrent motif in soft matter and bionanotechnological systems. Two typical situations encountered are the deposition of single DNA chains onto substrates for further analysis, e.g., by force microscopy, or the pulling of polyelectrolytes into membrane nanopores, as in sequencing applications. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of such scenarios based on the self-consistent field theory approach, which allows us to address the important effect of charge correlations. We calculate the grand potenti…
Chemical surfactants are omnipresent in consumers' products but they suffer from environmental concerns. For this reason, complete replacement of petrochemical surfactants by biosurfactants constitute a holy grail but this is far from occurring any soon. If the "biosurfactants revolution" has not occurred, yet, mainly due to the higher cost and lower availability of biosurfactants, another reason explains this fact: the poor knowledge of their properties in solution. This tutorial review aims at reviewing the self-assembly properties and phase behavior, experimental (sections 2.3 and 2.4) and …
We study the adsorption of charged patchy particle models (CPPMs) on a thin film of a like-charged and dense polyelectrolyte (PE) brush (of 50 monomers per chain) by means of implicit-solvent, explicit-salt Langevin dynamics computer simulations. Our previously introduced set of CPPMs embraces well-defined one-, and two-patched spherical globules, each of the same net charge and (nanometer) size, with mono- and multipole moments comparable to those of small globular proteins. We focus on electrostatic effects on the adsorption far away from the isoelectric point of typical proteins, i.e., wher…
Understanding the effect of inhomogeneity on the charge regulation and dielectric properties, and how it depends on the conformational characteristics of the macromolecules is a long-standing problem. In order to address this problem, we have developed a field-theory to study charge regulation and local dielectric function in planar polyelectrolyte brushes. The theory is used to study a polyacid brush, which is comprised of chains end-grafted at the solid-fluid interface, in equilibrium with a bulk solution containing monovalent salt ions, solvent molecules and pH controlling acid. In particul…

The self-assembly of two nonionic surfactants, pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) and n-dodecyl-ß-maltoside (ß-C12G2), in the presence of a purpose-synthesized silica sol of uniform particle size (diameter 16 nm) has been studied by adsorption measurements, dynamic light scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) using a H2O/D2O mixture matching the silica, in order to highlight the structure of the surfactant aggregates. For C12E5 strong aggregative adsorption onto the silica beads, with a high plateau value of the adsorption isotherm above the CMC was found. SANS measur…
We probe the electrostatic mechanism driving adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto like-charged membranes upon the addition of tri- and tetravalent counterions to a bathing monovalent salt solution. We develop a one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory that treats the monovalent salt at the electrostatic one-loop level and the multivalent counterions within a strong-coupling approach. It is shown that the adhesive force of the multivalent counterions mediating the like-charge adsorption arises from their strong condensation at the charged membrane. The resulting interfacial counterion excess loca…
The experimentally observed swelling and collapse response of weakly charged polymers to the addition of specific salts displays quite convoluted behavior that is not easy to categorize. Here we use a minimalistic implicit solvent / explicit salt simulation model with a focus on ion-specific interactions between ions and a single weakly charged polyelectrolyte to qualitatively explain the observed effects. In particular, we demonstrate ion-specific screening and bridging effects cause collapse at low salt concentrations whereas the same strong ion-specific direct interactions drive re-entrant …
