Let $K$ be any finite extension of $Q_{p}$, $L$ any finite Galois extension of $K$ and $E$ any finite large enough coefficient field containing $L$. We classify two-dimensional, F-semistable $E$-representations of $G_{K}$, by listing the isomorphism classes of rank two weakly admissible filtered $(ϕ,N,L/K,E)$-modules.
In our previous study of duality for complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue field, we treated coefficients in finite flat group schemes. In this paper, we treat abelian varieties. This in particular implies Grothendieck's conjecture on the perfectness of his pairing between the Neron component groups of an abelian variety and its dual. The point is that our formulation is well-suited with Galois descent. From the known case of semistable abelian varieties, we deduce the perfectness in full generality. We also treat coefficients in tori and, more generally, 1-motives.
In this expository paper we present a proof of the equivalence of the standard definition of descent data on schemes with another one mentioned in the literature that involves certain cartesian diagrams. Using this equivalence, we discuss the Galois descent of both schemes and morphisms of schemes.
We determine conditions for the invariance of the gonality under base extension, depending on the numeric invariants of the curve. More generally, we study the Galois descent of morphisms of curves to Brauer-Severi varieties, and also of rational normal scrolls.
A theorem of Grothendieck tells us that if the Galois action on the Tate module of an abelian variety factors through a smaller field, then the abelian variety, up to isogeny and finite extension of the base, is itself defined over the smaller field. Inspired by this, we give a Galois descent datum for a motive $H$ over a field by asking that the Galois action on an $\ell$-adic realisation factor through a smaller field. We conjecture that this descent datum is effective, that is if a motive $H$ satisfies the above criterion, then it must itself descend to the smaller field. We prove this conj…
Let $S$ be a finite set of primes. We prove that a form of finite Galois descent obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_{S}$-points on integral models of Hilbert modular varieties, extending a result of D.Helm and F.Voloch about modular curves. Let $L$ be a totally real field. Under (a special case of) the absolute Hodge conjecture and a weak Serre's conjecture for mod $\ell$ representations of the absolute Galois group of $L$, we prove that the same holds also for the $\mathcal{O}_{L,S}$-points.
We review the analog of Fontaine's theory of crystalline $p$-adic Galois representations and their classification by weakly admissible filtered isocrystals in the arithmetic of function fields over a finite field. There crystalline Galois representations are replaced by the Tate modules of so-called local shtukas. We prove that the Tate module functor is fully faithful. In addition to this étale realization of a local shtuka we discuss also the de Rham and the crystalline cohomology realizations and construct comparison isomorphisms between these realizations. We explain how local shtukas and …
We construct moduli stacks of two-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic local field, as well as their resolutions by moduli stacks of two-dimensional Breuil-Kisin modules with tame descent data. We study the local geometry of these moduli stacks by comparing them with local models of Shimura varieties at hyperspecial and Iwahori level.
Let $ L/K $ be a finite separable extension of fields whose Galois closure $ E/K $ has group $ G $. Greither and Pareigis have used Galois descent to show that a Hopf algebra giving a Hopf-Galois structure on $ L/K $ has the form $ E[N]^{G} $ for some group $ N $ such that $ |N|=[L:K] $. We formulate criteria for two such Hopf algebras to be isomorphic as Hopf algebras, and provide a variety of examples. In the case that the Hopf algebras in question are commutative, we also determine criteria for them to be isomorphic as $ K $-algebras. By applying our results, we complete a detailed analysis…
Let $K$ be a finite field extension of $Q_p$ and let $G_K$ be its absolute Galois group. We construct the universal family of filtered $(ϕ,N)$-modules, or (more generally) the universal family of $(ϕ,N)$-modules with a Hodge-Pink lattice, and study its geometric properties. Building on this, we construct the universal family of semi-stable $G_K$-representations in $Q_p$-algebras. All these universal families are parametrized by moduli spaces which are Artin stacks in schemes or in adic spaces locally of finite type over $Q_p$ in the sense of Huber. This has conjectural applications to the $p$-…
We construct a moduli space $Y^{μ, τ}$ of Kisin modules with tame descent datum $τ$ and with fixed $p$-adic Hodge type $\leq μ$, for some finite extension $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$. We show that this space is smoothly equivalent to the local model for $\mathrm{Res}_{K/\mathbb{Q}_p} \mathrm{GL}_n$, cocharacter $\{ μ\}$, and parahoric level structure. We use this to construct the analogue of Kottwitz-Rapoport strata on the special fiber $Y^{μ, τ}$ indexed by the $μ$-admissible set. We also relate $Y^{μ, τ}$ to potentially crystalline Galois deformation rings.
Every Hopf-Galois structure on a finite Galois extension $K/k$ where $G=Gal(K/k)$ corresponds uniquely to a regular subgroup $N\leq B=\operatorname{Perm}(G)$, normalized by $λ(G)\leq B$, in accordance with a theorem of Greither and Pareigis. The resulting Hopf algebra which acts on $K/k$ is $H_N=(K[N])^{λ(G)}$. For a given such $N$ we consider the Hopf-Galois structure arising from a subgroup $P\triangleleft N$ that is also normalized by $λ(G)$. This subgroup gives rise to a Hopf sub-algebra $H_P\subseteq H_N$ with fixed field $F=K^{H_P}$. By the work of Chase and Sweedler, this yields a Hopf-…
We associate to a filtered $φ$-module $D$ a sub-$Z_p[[x]]$-module of convergent series on the open unit disk in which the $p$-adic $L$-functions of the Galois representation associated to $D$ and the $Z_p$-cyclotomic extension live (if they exist). This generalizes the already known case where $D$ is associated to an elliptic curve or a modular form.
We study the section conjecture of anabelian geometry and the sufficiency of the finite descent obstruction to the Hasse principle for the moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties and of curves over number fields. For the former we show that the section conjecture fails and the finite descent obstruction holds for a general class of adelic points, assuming several well-known conjectures. This is done by relating the problem to a local-global principle for Galois representations. For the latter, we prove some partial results that indicate that the finite descent obstruction suff…
Let $K$ be a mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation field with residue field admitting a finite $p$-basis, and let $G_K$ be the Galois group. We first classify semi-stable representations of $G_K$ by weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N)$-modules with connections. We then construct a fully faithful functor from the category of \emph{integral} semi-stable representations of $G_K$ to the category of Breuil-Kisin $G_K$-modules. Using the integral theory, we classify $p$-divisible groups over the ring of integers of $K$ by minuscule Breuil-Kisin modules with connections.
Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $0$ containing all roots of unity. We construct a functorial compact Hausdorff space $X_F$ whose profinite fundamental group agrees with the absolute Galois group of $F$, i.e. the category of finite covering spaces of $X_F$ is equivalent to the category of finite extensions of $F$. The construction is based on the ring of rational Witt vectors of $F$. In the case of the cyclotomic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, the classical fundamental group of $X_F$ is a (proper) dense subgroup of the absolute Galois group of $F$. We also discuss a variant of this constructio…
Let $X/ \mathbb{C}$ be a K3 surface with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of a CM field $E$. We show that $X$ can always be defined over an Abelian extension $K/E$ explicitly determined by the discriminant form of the lattice $\mathrm{NS}(X)$. We then construct a model of $X$ over $K$ via Galois-descent and we study some of its basic properties, in particular we determine its Galois representation explicitly. Finally, we apply our results to give upper and lower bounds for a minimal field of definition for $X$ in terms of the class number of $E$ and the discriminant of $\mathrm{N…
