We investigate multi-dimensional Hamiltonian systems associated with constant Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type. A complete list of two- and three-component integrable Hamiltonians is obtained. All our examples possess dispersionless Lax pairs and an infinity of hydrodynamic reductions.
We develop a theory of integrable dispersive deformations of 2+1 dimensional Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type following the scheme proposed by Dubrovin and his collaborators in 1+1 dimensions. Our results show that the multi-dimensional situation is far more rigid, and generic Hamiltonians are not deformable. As an illustration we discuss a particular class of two-component Hamiltonian systems, establishing the triviality of first order deformations and classifying Hamiltonians possessing nontrivial deformations of the second order.
In this paper we present a novel construction of non-homogeneous hydrodynamic equations from what we call quasi-Stäckel systems, that is non-commutatively integrable systems constructed from appropriate maximally superintegrable Stäckel systems. We describe the relations between Poisson algebras generated by quasi-Stäckel Hamiltonians and the corresponding Lie algebras of vector fields of non-homogeneous hydrodynamic systems. We also apply Stäckel transform to obtain new non-homogeneous equations of considered type.
First-order Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type were introduced by Drubrovin and Novikov in 1983. In 2D, they are generated by a pair of contravariant metrics $g$, $\tilde{g}$ and a pair of differential-geometric objects $b$, $\tilde{b}$. If the determinant of the pencil $g+λ\tilde{g}$ vanishes for all $λ$, the operator is called degenerate. In this paper we provide a complete classification of degenerate two- and three-component Hamiltonian operators. Moreover, we study the integrability, by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, of 2+1 Hamiltonian systems arising from the structures w…
We prove that a local Hamiltonian operator of hydrodynamic type K_1 is compatible with a nondegenerate local Hamiltonian operator of hydrodynamic type K_2 if and only if the operator K_1 is locally the Lie derivative of the operator K_2 along a vector field in the corresponding domain of local coordinates. This result gives a natural invariant definition of the class of special flat manifolds corresponding to all the class of compatible Dubrovin--Novikov Hamiltonian operators (the Frobenius--Dubrovin manifolds naturally belong to this class). There is an integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy cor…
New approach in classification of integrable hydrodynamic chains is established. This is the method of the Hamiltonian hydrodynamic reductions. Simultaneously, this approach yields explicit Hamiltonian hydrodynamic reductions of the Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains. The concept of reducible Poisson brackets is established. Also this approach is useful for non-Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains. The deformed Benney hydrodynamic chain is considered.
We study bi-Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type with non-singular (semisimple) non-local bi-Hamiltonian structures and prove that such systems of hydrodynamic type are diagonalizable. Moreover, we prove that for an arbitrary non-singular (semisimple) non-locally bi-Hamiltonian system of hydrodynamic type, there exist local coordinates (Riemann invariants) such that all the related matrix differential-geometric objects, namely, the matrix V^i_j(u) of this system of hydrodynamic type, the metrics g^{ij}_1(u) and g^{ij}_2(u) and the affinors (w_{1, n})^i_j(u) and (w_{2,n})^i_j(u) of the non-…
We solve the problem of describing all nonlocal Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type with flat metrics. This problem is also equivalent to the description of all flat submanifolds with flat normal bundle in a pseudo-Euclidean space. It is proved that every such Hamiltonian operator (or the submanifold corresponding to the operator) gives a pencil of compatible Poisson brackets, generates bi-Hamiltonian integrable hierarchies of hydrodynamic type, and also defines a family of integrals in involution. We prove that a natural special class of such Hamiltonian operators (submanifolds) is des…
We study purely nonlocal Hamiltonian structures for systems of hydrodynamic type. In the case of a semi-Hamiltonian system, we show that such structures are related to quadratic expansions of the diagonal metrics naturally associated with the system.
In this paper we consider a new class of Hamiltonian hydrodynamic type systems, whose conservation laws are polynomial with respect to one of field variables.
Reciprocal transformations of Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type are investigated. The transformed operators are generally nonlocal, possessing a number of remarkable algebraic and differential-geometric properties. We apply our results to linearly degenerate semi-Hamiltonian systems in Riemann invariants. Since all such systems are linearizable by appropriate (generalized) reciprocal transformations, our formulae provide an infinity of mutually compatible nonlocal Hamiltonian structures, explicitly parametrized by arbitrary functions of one variable.
A systematic construction of Stäckel systems in separated coordinates and its relation to bi-Hamiltonian formalism are considered. A general form of related hydrodynamic systems, integrable by the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is derived. One Casimir bi-Hamiltonian case is studed in details and in this case, a systematic construction of related hydrodynamic systems in arbitrary coordinates is presented, using a cofactor method and soliton symmetry constraints.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a local geodesic flow of an affine connection on a surface to admit a linear first integral. The conditions are expressed in terms of two scalar invariants of differential orders 3 and 4 in the connection. We use this result to find explicit obstructions to the existence of a Hamiltonian formulation of Dubrovin--Novikov type for a given one--dimensional system of hydrodynamic type. We give several examples including Zoll connections, and Hamiltonian systems arising from two--dimensional Frobenius manifolds.
The Lagrangian representation of multi-Hamiltonian PDEs has been introduced by Y. Nutku and one of us (MVP). In this paper we focus on systems which are (at least) bi-Hamiltonian by a pair $A_1$, $A_2$, where $A_1$ is a hydrodynamic-type Hamiltonian operator. We prove that finding the Lagrangian representation is equivalent to finding a generalized vector field $τ$ such that $A_2=L_τA_1$. We use this result in order to find the Lagrangian representation when $A_2$ is a homogeneous third-order Hamiltonian operator, although the method that we use can be applied to any other homogeneous Hamilton…
New Hamiltonian formalism based on the theory of conjugate curvilinear coordinate nets is established. All formulas are ``mirrored'' to corresponding formulas in the Hamiltonian formalism constructed by B.A. Dubrovin and S.P. Novikov (in a flat case) and E.V. Ferapontov (in a non-flat case). In the ``mirrored-flat'' case the Lagrangian formulation is found. Multi-Hamiltonian examples are presented. In particular Egorov's case, generalizations of local Nutku--Olver's Hamiltonian structure and corresponding Sheftel--Teshukov's recursion operator are presented. An number of Hamiltonian structures…
Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type occur in a wide range of applications including fluid dynamics, the Whitham averaging procedure and the theory of Frobenius manifolds. In 1+1 dimensions, the requirement of the integrability of such systems by the generalised hodograph transform implies that integrable Hamiltonians depend on a certain number of arbitrary functions of two variables. On the contrary, in 2+1 dimensions the requirement of the integrability by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, which is a natural analogue of the generalised hodograph transform in higher dimensions, leads…
The theory of Poisson Vertex Algebras (PVAs) is a good framework to treat Hamiltonian partial differential equations. A PVA consists of a pair $(\mathcal{A},\{\cdot_λ\cdot\})$ of a differential algebra $\mathcal{A}$ and a bilinear operation called the $λ$-bracket. We extend the definition to the class of algebras $\mathcal{A}$ endowed with $d\geq1$ commuting derivations. We call this structure a \emph{multidimensional PVA}: it is a suitable setting to study Hamiltonian PDEs with $d$ spatial dimensions. We apply this theory to the study of deformations of the Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic ty…
Integrability condition of Hamiltonian perturbations of integrable Hamiltonian PDEs of hydrodynamic type up to the second order approximation is considered.
We characterize a class of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains, based on the necessary condition for the integrability provided by the vanishing of the Haantjes tensor. We prove that the vanishing of the first few components of the Haantjes tensor is already sufficiently restrictive, and allows a complete description of the corresponding Hamiltonian densities. In each of the cases we were able to explicitly construct a generating function for conservation laws, thus establishing the integrability.
A deformation parameter of a bihamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type is shown to parameterize different extensions of the AKNS hierarchy to include negative flows. This construction establishes a purely algebraic link between, on the one hand, two realizations of the first negative flow of the AKNS model and, on the other, two-component generalizations of Camassa-Holm and Dym type equations. The two-component generalizations of Camassa-Holm and Dym type equations can be obtained from the negative order Hamiltonians constructed from the Lenard relations recursively applied on the Casimir o…
We consider the pairs of general weakly non-local Poisson brackets of Hydrodynamic Type (Ferapontov brackets) and the corresponding integrable hierarchies. We show that under the requirement of non-degeneracy of the corresponding "first" pseudo-Riemannian metric $g_{(0)}^{νμ}$ and also some non-degeneracy requirement for the nonlocal part it is possible to introduce a "canonical" set of "integrable hierarchies" based on the Casimirs, Momentum functional and some "Canonical Hamiltonian functions". We prove also that all the "Higher" "positive" Hamiltonian operators and the "negative" symplectic…
In this paper the two-dimensional Benney system describing long wave propagation of a finite depth fluid motion and the multi-dimensional Russo--Smereka kinetic equation describing a bubbly flow are considered. The Hamiltonian approach established by J. Gibbons for one-dimensional Vlasov kinetic equation is extended to a multi-dimensional case. A local Hamiltonian structure associated with the hydrodynamic lattice of moments derived by D.J. Benney is constructed. A relationship between this hydrodynamic lattice of moments and the two-dimensional Vlasov kinetic equation is found. In the two-dim…
This paper is devoted to a description of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains associated with Dorfman Poisson brackets. Three main classes of these hydrodynamic chains are selected. Generating functions of conservation laws and commuting flows are found. Hierarchies of these Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains are extended on negative moments and negative time variables. Corresponding three dimensional quasilinear equations of the second order are presented.
In the present work, the integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies related to compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are effectively constructed. For achieving this aim, first of all, the problem on the canonical form of a special type for compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type is solved.
The concept of integrable boundary conditions is applied to hydrodynamic type systems. Examples of such boundary conditions for dispersionless Toda systems are obtained. The close relation of integrable boundary conditions with integrable reductions of multi-field systems is observed. The problem of consistency of boundary conditions with the Hamiltonian formulation is discussed. Examples of Hamiltonian integrable hydrodynamic type systems on a segment and a semi-line are presented.
We derive generalised multi-flow hydrodynamic reductions of the nonlocal kinetic equation for a soliton gas and investigate their structure. These reductions not only provide further insight into the properties of the new kinetic equation but also could prove to be representatives of a novel class of integrable systems of hydrodynamic type, beyond the conventional semi-Hamiltonian framework.
We start from a hyperbolic DN hydrodynamic type system of dimension $n$ which possesses Riemann invariants and we settle the necessary conditions on the conservation laws in the reciprocal transformation so that, after such a transformation of the independent variables, one of the metrics associated to the initial system be flat. We prove the following statement: let $n\ge 3$ in the case of reciprocal transformations of a single independent variable or $n\ge 5$ in the case of transformations of both the independent variable; then the reciprocal metric may be flat only if the conservation laws …
We consider hydrodynamic chains in $(1+1)$ dimensions which are Hamiltonian with respect to the Kupershmidt-Manin Poisson bracket. These systems can be derived from single $(2+1)$ equations, here called hydrodynamic Vlasov equations, under the map $A^n =\int_{-\infty}^\infty p^n f dp.$ For these equations an analogue of the Dubrovin-Novikov Hamiltonian structure is constructed. The Vlasov formalism allows us to describe objects like the Haantjes tensor for such a chain in a much more compact and computable way. We prove that the necessary conditions found by Ferapontov and Marshall in (arXiv:n…
In this paper we are interested in non trivial bi-Hamiltonian deformations of the Poisson pencil $ω_λ=ω_2+λω_1=uδ'(x-y)+\f{1}{2}u_xδ(x-y)+λδ'(x-y)$. Deformations are generated by a sequence of vector fields $\{X_2, X_4,...\}$, where each $X_{2k}$ is homogenous of degree $2k$ with respect to a grading induced by rescaling. Constructing recursively the vector fields $X_{2k}$ one obtains two types of relations involving their unknown coefficients: one set of linear relations and an other one which involves quadratic relations. We prove that the set of linear relations has a geometric meaning: usi…
A differential-algebraic approach to studying the Lax type integrability of the generalized Riemann type hydrodynamic hierarchy is revisited, its new Lax type representation and Poisson structures constructed in exact form. The related bi-Hamiltonian integrability and compatible Poissonian structures of the generalized Riemann type hierarchy are also discussed.
The algebro-geometric approach for integrability of semi-Hamiltonian hydrodynamic type systems is presented. This method is significantly simplified for so-called symmetric hydrodynamic type systems. Plenty interesting and physically motivated examples are investigated.
Recently, a hydrodynamic description of local equilibrium dynamics in quantum integrable systems was discovered. In the diffusionless limit, this is equivalent to a certain "Bethe-Boltzmann" kinetic equation, which has the form of an integro-differential conservation law in $(1+1)$D. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the sense in which the Bethe-Boltzmann equation defines an "integrable kinetic equation". To this end, we study a class of $N$ dimensional systems of evolution equations that arise naturally as finite-dimensional approximations to the Bethe-Boltzmann equation. We o…
The theory of multidimensional Poisson vertex algebras (mPVAs) provides a completely algebraic formalism to study the Hamiltonian structure of PDEs, for any number of dependent and independent variables. In this paper, we compute the cohomology of the PVAs associated with two-dimensional, two-components Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type at the third differential degree. This allows us to obtain their corresponding Poisson-Lichnerowicz cohomology, which is the main building block of the theory of their deformations. Such a cohomology is trivial neither in the second group, corresponding to …
We show that the exact partition function of U(N) six-dimensional gauge theory with eight supercharges on C^2 x S^2 provides the quantization of the integrable system of hydrodynamic type known as gl(N) periodic Intermediate Long Wave (ILW). We characterize this system as the hydrodynamic limit of elliptic Calogero-Moser integrable system. We compute the Bethe equations from the effective gauged linear sigma model on S^2 with target space the ADHM instanton moduli space, whose mirror computes the Yang-Yang function of gl(N) ILW. The quantum Hamiltonians are given by the local chiral ring obser…
The closed string model in the background gravity field is considered as a bi-Hamiltonian system in assumption that string model is the integrable model for particular kind of the background fields. The dual nonlocal Poisson brackets(PB), depending of the background fields and of their derivatives, are obtained. The integrability condition is formulated as the compatibility of the bi-Hamiltonity condition and the Jacobi identity of the dual PB. It is shown that the dual brackets and dual Hamiltonians can be obtained from the canonical PB and from the initial Hamiltonian by imposing the second …
We consider Euler equations for potential flow of ideal incompressible fluid with a free surface and infinite depth in two dimensional geometry. Both gravity forces and surface tension are taken int account. A time-dependent conformal mapping is used which maps a lower complex half plane of the auxiliary complex variable $w$ into a fluid's area with the real line of $w$ mapped into the free fluid's surface. We reformulate the exact Eulerian dynamics through a non-canonical nonlocal Hamiltonian structure for a pair of the Hamiltonian variables. These two variables are the imaginary part of the …
We consider the WDVV associativity equations in the four dimensional case. These nonlinear equations of third order can be written as a pair of six component commuting two-dimensional non-diagonalizable hydrodynamic type systems. We prove that these systems possess a compatible pair of local homogeneous Hamiltonian structures of Dubrovin--Novikov type (of first and third order, respectively).
The integrability of an m-component system of hydrodynamic type, u_t=V(u)u_x, by the generalized hodograph method requires the diagonalizability of the mxm matrix V(u). This condition is known to be equivalent to the vanishing of the corresponding Haantjes tensor. We generalize this approach to hydrodynamic chains -- infinite-component systems of hydrodynamic type for which the infinite matrix V(u) is `sufficiently sparse'. For such systems the Haantjes tensor is well-defined, and the calculation of its components involves finite summations only. We illustrate our approach by classifying broad…
We classify integrable Hamiltonian equations in 3D with the Hamiltonian operator d/dx, where the Hamiltonian density h(u, w) is a function of two variables: dependent variable u and the non-locality w such that w_x=u_y. Based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions, the integrability conditions are derived (in the form of an involutive PDE system for the Hamiltonian density h). We show that the generic integrable density is expressed in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic functions. Dispersionless Lax pairs, commuting flows and dispersive deformations of the resulting equations are also discuss…
Changes of type transitions for the two-component hydrodynamic type systems are discussed. It is shown that these systems generically assume the Jordan form (with 2 X 2 Jordan block) on the transition line with hodograph equations becoming parabolic. Conditions which allow or forbid the transition from hyperbolic domain to elliptic one are discussed. Hamiltonian systems and their special subclasses and equations, like dispersionless nonlinear Schroedinger, dispersionless Boussinesq, one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics equations and nonlinear wave equations are studied. Numerical results co…
The particular case of the integrable two component (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamical type systems, which generalises the so-called Hamiltonian subcase, is considered. The associated system in involution is integrated in a parametric form. A dispersionless Lax formulation is found.
Necessary and sufficient conditions for an existence of the Poisson brackets significantly simplify in the Liouville coordinates. The corresponding equations can be integrated. Thus, a description of local Hamiltonian structures is a first step in a description of integrable hydrodynamic chains. The concept of $M$ Poisson bracket is introduced. Several new Poisson brackets are presented.
Using a (1,1)-tensor L with zero Nijenhuis torsion and maximal possible number (equal to the number of dependent variables) of distinct, functionally independent eigenvalues we define, in a coordinate-free fashion, the seed systems which are weakly nonlinear semi-Hamiltonian systems of a special form, and an infinite set of conservation laws for the seed systems. The reciprocal transformations constructed from these conservation laws yield a considerably larger class of hydrodynamic-type systems from the seed systems, and we show that these new systems are again defined in a coordinate-free ma…
Given a Poisson structure (or, equivalently, a Hamiltonian operator) $P$, we show that its Lie derivative $L_τ(P)$ along a vector field $τ$ defines another Poisson structure, which is automatically compatible with $P$, if and only if $[L_τ^2(P),P]=0$, where $[\cdot,\cdot]$ is the Schouten bracket. We further prove that if $\dim\ker P\leq 1$ and $P$ is of locally constant rank, then all Poisson structures compatible with a given Poisson structure $P$ on a finite-dimensional manifold $M$ are locally of the form $L_τ(P)$, where $τ$ is a local vector field such that $L_τ^2(P)=L_{\tildeτ}(P)$ for s…
We investigate the reductions of dispersionless Harry Dym hierarchy to systems of finitely many partial differential equations. These equations must satisfy the compatibility condition and they are diagonalizable and semi-Hamiltonian. By imposing a further constraint, the compatibility is reduced to a system of algebraic equations, whose solutions are described.
We show that evolutionary Hirota type Euler-Lagrange equations in (2+1) dimensions have a symplectic Monge-Ampère form. We consider integrable equations of this type in the sense that they admit infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions and determine Lax pairs for them. For two seven-parameter families of integrable equations converted to two-component form we have constructed Lagrangians, recursion operators and bi-Hamiltonian representations. We have also presented a six-parameter family of tri-Hamiltonian systems.
We study in this work the important class of nonlocal Poisson Brackets (PB) which we call weakly nonlocal. They appeared recently in some investigations in the Soliton Theory. However there was no theory of such brackets except very special first order case. Even in this case the theory was not developed enough. In particular, we introduce the Physical forms and find Casimirs, Momentum and Canonical forms for the most important Hydrodynamic type PB of that kind and their dependence on the boundary conditions.
We study the connection between N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories, quantum cohomology and quantum integrable systems of hydrodynamic type. We consider gauge theories on ALE spaces of A and D-type and discuss how they describe the quantum cohomology of the corresponding Nakajima's quiver varieties. We also discuss how the exact evaluation of local BPS observables in the gauge theory can be used to calculate the spectrum of quantum Hamiltonians of spin Calogero integrable systems and spin Intermediate Long Wave hydrodynamics. This is explicitly obtained by a Bethe Ansatz Equation provided by t…
We study a possibly integrable model of abelian gauge fields on a two-dimensional surface M, with volume form mu. It has the same phase space as ideal hydrodynamics, a coadjoint orbit of the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of M, SDiff(M,mu). Gauge field Poisson brackets differ from the Heisenberg algebra, but are reminiscent of Yang-Mills theory on a null surface. Enstrophy invariants are Casimirs of the Poisson algebra of gauge invariant observables. Some symplectic leaves of the Poisson manifold are identified. The Hamiltonian is a magnetic energy, similar to that of electrodynamics, …
B.A. Dubrovin proved that remarkable WDVV associativity equations are integrable systems. In a simplest nontrivial three-component case these equations can be written as a nondiagonalizable hydrodynamic type system equivalent to a symmetric reduction of the three wave interaction and to the matrix Hopf equation. Then E.V. Ferapontov and O.I. Mokhov found a local Hamiltonian structure. Finally E.V. Ferapontov, C.A.P. Galvão, O.I. Mokhov, Ya. Nutku found a second local Hamiltonian structure. Both local Hamiltonian structure are homogeneous of first and third order (respectively) of Dubrovin--Nov…
A three-dimensional integrable generalization of the Stäckel systems is proposed. The classification of such systems is obtained which results in two families. The first one is the direct sum of the two-dimensional case which is equivalent to the representation of the Schottky--Manakov top in the quasi-Stäckel form and a trivial one-dimensional system. The second family is probably a new three-dimensional system. The system of hydrodynamic type, which we get from this family in a usual way, is a 3-dimensional generalization of the Gibbons--Tsarev system. A generalization of the quasi-Stäckel s…
Paper is devoted to the construction of averaging procedure of Hamiltonian structures in discrete Whitham method. The procedure is analogous to Dubrovin-Novikov procedure of averaging of local field-theoretical Poisson brackets and gives the Poisson bracket of Hydrodynamic Type starting from Poisson bracket for a discrete chain.
The description of the Egorov hydrodynamic type systems is presented in language of conservation laws. Under extra conditions of semisimplicity and homogeneity tri-Hamiltonian structures of such systems are described. Even and odd cases are related with flat and metric of constant curvature, respectively. Some important and well-known examples like averaged by Whitham approach and dispersionless limits of vector NLS and vector LSR are investigated.
The Hamiltonian structure of the two-dimensional dispersionless Toda hierarchy is studied, this being a particular example of a system of hydrodynamic type. The polynomial conservation laws for the system turn out, after a change of variable, to be associated with the axially symmetric solutions of the 3-dimensional Laplace equation and this enables a generating function for the Hamiltonian densities to be derived in closed form.
In this paper, we have obtained motion equations for a wide class of one-dimensional singularities in 2-D ideal hydrodynamics. The simplest of them, are well known as point vortices. More complicated singularities correspond to vorticity point dipoles. It has been proved that point multipoles of a higher order (quadrupoles and more) are not the exact solutions of two-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics. The motion equations for a system of interacting point vortices and point dipoles have been obtained. It is shown that these equations are Hamiltonian ones and have three motion integrals in involu…
A certain class of integrable hydrodynamic type systems with three independent and N dependent variables is considered. We choose the existence of a pseudopotential as a criterion of integrability. It turns out that the class of integrable systems having pseudopotentials with movable singularities is described by a functional equation, which can be solved explicitly. This allows us to construct interesting examples of integrable hydrodynamic systems for arbitrary N.
A (d+1)-dimensional dispersionless PDE is said to be integrable if its n-component hydrodynamic reductions are locally parametrized by (d-1)n arbitrary functions of one variable. Given a PDE which does not pass the integrability test, the method of hydrodynamic reductions allows one to effectively reconstruct additional differential constraints which, when added to the equation, make it an integrable system in fewer dimensions (if consistent).
