Using a (1,1)-tensor L with zero Nijenhuis torsion and maximal possible number (equal to the number of dependent variables) of distinct, functionally independent eigenvalues we define, in a coordinate-free fashion, the seed systems which are weakly nonlinear semi-Hamiltonian systems of a special form, and an infinite set of conservation laws for the seed systems.
The reciprocal transformations constructed from these conservation laws yield a considerably larger class of hydrodynamic-type systems from the seed systems, and we show that these new systems are again defined in a coordinate-free manner, using the tensor L alone, and, moreover, are weakly nonlinear and semi-Hamiltonian, so their general solution can be obtained by means of the generalized hodograph method of Tsarev.
A new approach for derivation of Benney-like momentum chains and integrable hydrodynamic type systems is presented. New integrable hydrodynamic chains are constructed, all their reductions are described and integrated. New (2+1) integrable hydrodynamic type systems are found.
Hydrodynamic reductions of the hydrodynamic chain associated with dispersionless limit of 2+1 Harry Dym equation are found by the Miura type and reciprocal transformations applied to the Benney hydrodynamic chain.
New approach to classification of integrable hydrodynamic chains is established. Generating functions of conservation laws are classified by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. N parametric family of explicit hydrodynamic reductions allows to reconstruct corresponding hydrodynamic chains. Plenty new hydrodynamic chains are found.
The concept of integrable boundary conditions is applied to hydrodynamic type systems. Examples of such boundary conditions for dispersionless Toda systems are obtained. The close relation of integrable boundary conditions with integrable reductions of multi-field systems is observed. The problem of consistency of boundary conditions with the Hamiltonian formulation is discussed. Examples of Hamiltonian integrable hydrodynamic type systems on a segment and a semi-line are presented.
This paper is devoted to a description of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains associated with Dorfman Poisson brackets. Three main classes of these hydrodynamic chains are selected. Generating functions of conservation laws and commuting flows are found. Hierarchies of these Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains are extended on negative moments and negative time variables. Corresponding three dimensional quasilinear equations of the second order are presented.
The algebro-geometric approach for integrability of semi-Hamiltonian hydrodynamic type systems is presented. This method is significantly simplified for so-called symmetric hydrodynamic type systems. Plenty interesting and physically motivated examples are investigated.
We describe our recent work on deformations of hyperelliptic curves by means of integrable hierarchy of hydrodynamic type (nlin.SI/0205012). We also discuss a further extension to the case of non-hyperelliptic curves.
Symmetry constraints for (2+1)-dimensional dispersionless integrable equations are considered. It is demonstrated that they naturally lead to systems of hydrodynamic type which arise within the reduction method. One also easily obtaines an associated complex curve (Sato function) and corresponding generating equations. Dispersionless KP and 2DTL hierarchy are considered as illustrative examples.
A systematic construction of Stäckel systems in separated coordinates and its relation to bi-Hamiltonian formalism are considered. A general form of related hydrodynamic systems, integrable by the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is derived. One Casimir bi-Hamiltonian case is studed in details and in this case, a systematic construction of related hydrodynamic systems in arbitrary coordinates is presented, using a cofactor method and soliton symmetry constraints.
We demonstrate that hydrodynamic reductions of dispersionless integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions, such as the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and dispersionless Toda lattice (dTl) equations, can be deformed into reductions of the corresponding dispersive counterparts. Modulo the Miura group, such deformations are unique. The requirement that any hydrodynamic reduction possesses a deformation of this kind imposes strong constraints on the structure of dispersive terms, suggesting an alternative approach to the integrability in 2+1 dimensions.
Using the method of hydrodynamic reductions, we find all integrable infinite (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic-type chains of shift one. A class of integrable infinite (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic-type chains is constructed.
We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for a two-component (2+1)-dimensional system of hydrodynamic type to possess infinitely many hydrodynamic reductions. These conditions are in involution, implying that the systems in question are locally parametrized by 15 arbitrary constants. It is proved that all such systems possess three conservation laws of hydrodynamic type and, therefore, are symmetrizable in Godunov's sense. Moreover, all such systems are proved to possess a scalar pseudopotential which plays the role of the `dispersionless Lax pair'. We demonstrate that the class of tw…
We show that the integrable equations of hydrodynamic type admit nonlocal reductions. We first construct such reductions for a general Lax equation and then give several examples. The reduced nonlocal equations are of hydrodynamic type and integrable. They admit Lax representations and hence possess infinitely many conserved quantities.
We show that matrix $Q\times Q$ Self-dual type $S$-integrable Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) possess a family of lower-dimensional reductions represented by the matrix $ Q \times n_0 Q$ quasilinear first order PDEs solved in \cite{SZ1} by the method of characteristics. In turn, these PDEs admit two types of available particular solutions: (a) explicit solutions and (b) solutions described implicitly by a system of non-differential equations. The later solutions, in particular, exhibit the wave profile breaking. Only first type of solutions is available for (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear $S…
We classify integrable third order equations in 2+1 dimensions which generalize the examples of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili, Veselov-Novikov and Harry Dym equations. Our approach is based on the observation that dispersionless limits of integrable systems in 2+1 dimensions possess infinitely many multi-phase solutions coming from the so-called hydrodynamic reductions. %Conversely, the requirement of the existence of hydrodynamic reductions proves to be an efficient classification criterion. In this paper we adopt a novel perturbative approach to the classification problem. Based on the method of hy…
New Hamiltonian formalism based on the theory of conjugate curvilinear coordinate nets is established. All formulas are ``mirrored'' to corresponding formulas in the Hamiltonian formalism constructed by B.A. Dubrovin and S.P. Novikov (in a flat case) and E.V. Ferapontov (in a non-flat case). In the ``mirrored-flat'' case the Lagrangian formulation is found. Multi-Hamiltonian examples are presented. In particular Egorov's case, generalizations of local Nutku--Olver's Hamiltonian structure and corresponding Sheftel--Teshukov's recursion operator are presented. An number of Hamiltonian structures…
A (d+1)-dimensional dispersionless PDE is said to be integrable if its n-component hydrodynamic reductions are locally parametrized by (d-1)n arbitrary functions of one variable. Given a PDE which does not pass the integrability test, the method of hydrodynamic reductions allows one to effectively reconstruct additional differential constraints which, when added to the equation, make it an integrable system in fewer dimensions (if consistent).
We present a theory of compatible differential constraints of a hydrodynamic hierarchy of infinite-dimensional systems. It provides a convenient point of view for studying and formulating integrability properties and it reveals some hidden structures of the theory of integrable systems. Illustrative examples and new integrable models are exhibited.
Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type occur in a wide range of applications including fluid dynamics, the Whitham averaging procedure and the theory of Frobenius manifolds. In 1+1 dimensions, the requirement of the integrability of such systems by the generalised hodograph transform implies that integrable Hamiltonians depend on a certain number of arbitrary functions of two variables. On the contrary, in 2+1 dimensions the requirement of the integrability by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, which is a natural analogue of the generalised hodograph transform in higher dimensions, leads…
We describe the results that have so far been obtained in the classification problem for integrable (2+1)-dimensional systems of hydrodynamic type. The systems of Gibbons--Tsarev type are the most fundamental here. A whole class of integrable (2+1)-dimensional models is related to each such system. We present the known GT systems related to algebraic curves of genus g=0 and g=1 and also a new GT system corresponding to algebraic curves of genus g=2. We construct a wide class of integrable models generated by the simplest GT system, which was not considered previously because it is in a sense t…
We characterize a class of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains, based on the necessary condition for the integrability provided by the vanishing of the Haantjes tensor. We prove that the vanishing of the first few components of the Haantjes tensor is already sufficiently restrictive, and allows a complete description of the corresponding Hamiltonian densities. In each of the cases we were able to explicitly construct a generating function for conservation laws, thus establishing the integrability.
The partition function of the Symmetric Matrix Ensemble is identified with the $τ-$function of a particular solution of the Pfaff Lattice. We show that in the case of even power interactions, in the thermodynamic limit, the $τ-$function corresponds to the solution of an integrable chain of hydrodynamic type. We prove that the hydrodynamic chain so obtained is diagonalisable and admits hydrodynamic reductions in Riemann invariants in an arbitrary number of components.
In the present work, the integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies related to compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are effectively constructed. For achieving this aim, first of all, the problem on the canonical form of a special type for compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type is solved.
It is known that a large class of integrable hydrodynamic type systems can be constructed through the Lauricella function, a generalization of the classical Gauss hypergeometric function. In this paper, we construct novel class of integrable hydrodynamic type systems which govern the dynamics of critical points of confluent Lauricella type functions defined on finite dimensional Grassmannian Gr(2,n), the set of 2xn matrices of rank two. Those confluent functions satisfy certain degenerate Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations. It is also shown that in general, hydrodynamic type system associated to …
HyperCR Einstein--Weyl equations in 2+1 dimensions reduce to a pair of quasi-linear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. All solutions to this hydrodynamic system can be in principle constructed from a twistor correspondence, thus establishing the integrability. Simple examples of solutions including the hydrodynamic reductions yield new Einstein--Weyl structures.
We investigate the role of Hertling-Manin condition on the structure constants of an associative commutative algebra in the theory of integrable systems of hydrodynamic type. In such a framework we introduce the notion of F-manifold with compatible connection generalizing a structure introduced by Manin.
This article is a local analysis of integrable GL(2)-structures of degree 4. A GL(2)-structure of degree n corresponds to a distribution of rational normal cones over a manifold M of dimension (n+1). Integrability corresponds to the existence of many submanifolds that are spanned by lines in the cones. These GL(2)-structures are important because they naturally arise from a certain family of second-order hyperbolic PDEs in three variables that are integrable via hydrodynamic reduction. Familiar examples include the wave equation, the first flow of the dKP equation, and the Boyer--Finley equati…
A general scheme for determining and studying hydrodynamic type systems describing integrable deformations of algebraic curves is applied to cubic curves. Lagrange resolvents of the theory of cubic equations are used to derive and characterize these deformations.

The diagonal hydrodynamic reductions of a hierarchy of integrable hydrodynamic chains are explicitly characterized. Their compatibility with previously introduced reductions of differential type is analyzed and their associated class of hodograph solutions is discussed.
A new approach extracting multi-parametric hydrodynamic reductions for the integrable hydrodynamic chains is presented. The Benney hydrodynamic chain is considered.
We solve the problem of reducing to the simplest and convenient for our purposes, canonical form for an arbitrary pair of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type generated by metrics of constant Riemannian curvature in order to get an effective construction of the integrable hierarchies related to all these compatible Poisson brackets.
New approach in classification of integrable hydrodynamic chains is established. This is the method of the Hamiltonian hydrodynamic reductions. Simultaneously, this approach yields explicit Hamiltonian hydrodynamic reductions of the Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains. The concept of reducible Poisson brackets is established. Also this approach is useful for non-Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains. The deformed Benney hydrodynamic chain is considered.
In this paper we consider non-diagonalisable hydrodynamic type systems integrable by the Extended Hodograph Method. We restrict our consideration to non-diagonalisable hydrodynamic reductions of the Mikhalev equation. We show that families of these hydrodynamic type systems are reducible to the Heat hierarchy. Then we construct new particular explicit solutions for the Mikhalev equation.
We characterize non-degenerate Lagrangians of the form $ \int f(u_x, u_y, u_t) dx dy dt $ such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations $ (f_{u_x})_x+ (f_{u_y})_y+ (f_{u_t})_t=0 $ are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. The integrability conditions constitute an over-determined system of fourth order PDEs for the Lagrangian density $f$, which is in involution and possess interesting differential-geometric properties. The moduli space of integrable Lagrangians, factorized by the action of a natural equivalence group, is three-dimensional. Familiar examples include the di…
This paper is devoted to the classification of integrable Davey-Stewartson type equations. A list of potentially deformable dispersionless systems is obtained through the requirement that such systems must be generated by a polynomial dispersionless Lax pair. A perturbative approach based on the method of hydrodynamic reductions is employed to recover the integrable systems along with their Lax pairs. Some of the found systems seem to be new.
We consider the hydrodynamics of the ideal fluid on a 2-torus and its Moyal deformations. The both type of equations have the form of the Euler-Arnold tops. The Laplace operator plays the role of the inertia-tensor. It is known that 2-d hydrodynamics is non-integrable. After replacing of the Laplace operator by a distinguish pseudo-differential operator the deformed system becomes integrable. It is an infinite rank Hitchin system over an elliptic curve with transition functions from the group of the non-commutative torus. In the classical limit we obtain an integrable analog of the hydrodynami…
We prove that a local Hamiltonian operator of hydrodynamic type K_1 is compatible with a nondegenerate local Hamiltonian operator of hydrodynamic type K_2 if and only if the operator K_1 is locally the Lie derivative of the operator K_2 along a vector field in the corresponding domain of local coordinates. This result gives a natural invariant definition of the class of special flat manifolds corresponding to all the class of compatible Dubrovin--Novikov Hamiltonian operators (the Frobenius--Dubrovin manifolds naturally belong to this class). There is an integrable bi-Hamiltonian hierarchy cor…
We construct integrable pseudopotentials with an arbitrary number of fields in terms of elliptic generalization of hypergeometric functions in several variables. These pseudopotentials yield some integrable (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems. An interesting class of integrable (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems is also generated by our pseudopotentials.
Several integrable semi-discretizations are known in the literature for the massive Thirring system in characteristic coordinates. We present for the first time an integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates. Our approach relies on the relation between the continuous massive Thirring system and the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice. The Backlund transformation for solutions to the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and the time evolution of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates are combined together in the derivation of the Lax system for the integrable sem…
The particular case of the integrable two component (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamical type systems, which generalises the so-called Hamiltonian subcase, is considered. The associated system in involution is integrated in a parametric form. A dispersionless Lax formulation is found.
We construct integrable pseudopotentials with an arbitrary number of fields in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. These pseudopotentials yield some integrable (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems. An interesting class of integrable (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic type systems is also generated by our pseudopotentials.
We introduce and study a new class of kinetic equations, which arise in the description of nonequilibrium macroscopic dynamics of soliton gases with elastic collisions between solitons. These equations represent nonlinear integro-differential systems and have a novel structure, which we investigate by studying in detail the class of $N$-component `cold-gas' hydrodynamic reductions. We prove that these reductions represent integrable linearly degenerate hydrodynamic type systems for arbitrary $N$ which is a strong evidence in favour of integrability of the full kinetic equation. We derive compa…
Recently, a hydrodynamic description of local equilibrium dynamics in quantum integrable systems was discovered. In the diffusionless limit, this is equivalent to a certain "Bethe-Boltzmann" kinetic equation, which has the form of an integro-differential conservation law in $(1+1)$D. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the sense in which the Bethe-Boltzmann equation defines an "integrable kinetic equation". To this end, we study a class of $N$ dimensional systems of evolution equations that arise naturally as finite-dimensional approximations to the Bethe-Boltzmann equation. We o…
A certain class of integrable hydrodynamic type systems with three independent and N dependent variables is considered. We choose the existence of a pseudopotential as a criterion of integrability. It turns out that the class of integrable systems having pseudopotentials with movable singularities is described by a functional equation, which can be solved explicitly. This allows us to construct interesting examples of integrable hydrodynamic systems for arbitrary N.
We develop the theory of Whitham type hierarchies integrable by hydrodynamic reductions as a theory of certain differential-geometric objects. As an application we construct Gibbons-Tsarev systems associated to moduli space of algebraic curves of arbitrary genus and prove that the universal Whitham hierarchy is integrable by hydrodynamic reductions.
The nonlinear equations for the general nonsingular pairs of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type are derived and the integrability of these equations by the method of inverse scattering problem is proved. For these equations, the Lax pairs with a spectral parameter are presented. Moreover, we demonstrate the integrability of the equations for some especially important partial classes of compatible nonlocal Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type, in particular, for the most important case when one of the compatible Poisson brackets is local and also for the case when one of…
We review the role of Gibbons-Tsarev-type systems in classification of integrable multi-dimensional hydrodynamic-type systems. Our main observation is an universality of Gibbons-Tsarev-type systems. We also constract explicitly a wide class of 3-dimensional hydrodynamic-type systems corresponding to the simplest possible Gibbons-Tsarev-type system.
The WZNW and string models are considered in the terms of the initial and invariant chiral currents assuming that the internal and external torsions coincide (anticoincide) and they are the structure constants of the $SU(n),SO(n),$ $SP(n)$ Lie algebras. These models are the auxiliary problems in order to construct integrable equations of hydrodynamic type. It was shown that the WZNW and string models in terms of invariant chiral currents are integrable for the constant torsion associated with the structure constants of the $SU(2),$ $SO(3),$ $SP(2)$ and $SU(3)$ algebras only. The equation of mo…
The closed string model in the background gravity field is considered as a bi-Hamiltonian system in assumption that string model is the integrable model for particular kind of the background fields. The dual nonlocal Poisson brackets(PB), depending of the background fields and of their derivatives, are obtained. The integrability condition is formulated as the compatibility of the bi-Hamiltonity condition and the Jacobi identity of the dual PB. It is shown that the dual brackets and dual Hamiltonians can be obtained from the canonical PB and from the initial Hamiltonian by imposing the second …
Confocal quadrics lie at the heart of the system of confocal coordinates (also called elliptic coordinates, after Jacobi). We suggest a discretization which respects two crucial properties of confocal coordinates: separability and all two-dimensional coordinate subnets being isothermic surfaces (that is, allowing a conformal parametrization along curvature lines, or, equivalently, supporting orthogonal Koenigs nets). Our construction is based on an integrable discretization of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation and leads to discrete nets with the separability property, with all two-dimensional…
