These are my notes for a talk at the The Tate Conjecture workshop at the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto, CA, July 23--July 27, 2007, somewhat revised and expanded. The intent of the talk was to review what is known and to suggest directions for research. v2: Revised expanded (24 pages).
The Tate conjecture for squares of K3 surfaces over finite fields was recently proved by Ito-Ito-Koshikawa. We give a more geometric proof when the characteristic is at least 5. The main idea is to use twisted derived equivalences between K3 surfaces to link the Tate conjecture to finiteness results over finite fields, in the spirit of Tate.
We make explicit Serre's generalization of the Sato-Tate conjecture for motives, by expressing the construction in terms of fiber functors from the motivic category of absolute Hodge cycles into a suitable category of Hodge structures of odd weight. This extends the case of abelian varietes, which we treated in a previous paper. That description was used by Fite--Kedlaya--Rotger--Sutherland to classify Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces; the present description is used by Fite--Kedlaya--Sutherland to make a similar classification for certain motives of weight 3. We also give conditions under…
In two earlier articles, we proved that, if the Hodge conjecture is true for ALL CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers, then both the Tate conjecture and the standard conjectures are true for abelian varieties over finite fields. Here we rework the proofs so that they apply to a single abelian variety. As a consequence, we prove (unconditionally) that the Tate and standard conjectures are true for many abelian varieties over finite fields, including abelian varieties for which the algebra of Tate classes is not generated by divisor classes.
Let $\mathcal X$ be a regular variety, flat and proper over a complete regular curve over a finite field, such that the generic fiber $X$ is smooth and geometrically connected. We prove that the Brauer group of $\mathcal X$ is finite if and only Tate's conjecture for divisors on $X$ holds and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Albanese variety of $X$ is finite, generalizing a theorem of Artin and Grothendieck for surfaces to arbitrary relative dimension. We also give a formula relating the orders of the group under the assumption that they are finite, generalizing the formula given for a surfac…
The Tate conjecture has two parts: an assertion (S) about semisimplicity of Galois representations, and an assertion (T) which says that every Tate class is algebraic. We show that in characteristic 0, (T) implies (S). In characteristic p an analogous result is true under stronger assumptions.
The Tate conjecture has two parts: i) Tate classes are linear combination of algebraic classes, ii) semisimplicity of Galois representations (for smooth projective varieties). B. Moonen proved that i) implies ii) in characteristic 0, using $p$-adic Hodge theory. We show that an unconditional result lies behind this implication: the {\it observability} of arithmetic monodromy groups of geometric origin (in any characteristic) - which leads to a sharpening of Moonen's result. We also discuss another aspect of the Tate conjecture related to the transcendence of $p$-adic periods.
In this mostly expository note, we explain a proof of Tate's two conjectures [Tat65] for algebraic cycles of arbitrary codimension on certain products of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces over number fields.
For an abelian variety over a finite field, Clozel (1999) showed that l-homological equivalence coincides with numerical equivalence for infinitely many l, and the author (1999) gave a criterion for the Tate conjecture to follow from Tate's theorem on divisors. We generalize both statements to motives, and apply them to other varieties including K3 surfaces.
We use E. Lau's classification of 2-divisible groups using Dieudonné displays to construct integral canonical models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at 2-adic places where the level is hyperspecial. We apply this to prove the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces in characteristic 2.
Using Calegari's result on the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, we study the irreducibility of pure, regular, rank 3 weakly compatible systems of self-dual l-adic representations. As a consequence, we prove that the Tate conjecture holds for a family of elliptic surfaces defined over Q with geometric genus bigger than 1.
We show that the $\ell$-adic Tate conjecture for divisors on smooth proper varieties over finitely generated fields of positive characteristic follows from the $\ell$-adic Tate conjecture for divisors on smooth projective surfaces over finite fields. Similar results for cycles of higher co-dimension are given.
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
The algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture was initially introduced by Serre and then discussed by Banaszak and Kedlaya. This note shows that the Mumford-Tate conjecture for an abelian variety A implies the algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture for A. The relevance of this result lies mainly in the fact that the list of known cases of the Mumford-Tate conjecture was up to now a lot longer than the list of known cases of the algebraic Sato-Tate conjecture.
We introduce $\ell$-Galois special subvarieties as an $\ell$-adic analog of the Hodge-theoretic notion of a special subvariety. The Mumford-Tate conjecture predicts that both notions are equivalent. We study some properties of these subvarieties and prove this equivalence for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition. As applications, we show that the $\ell$-Galois exceptional locus is a countable union of algebraic subvarieties and, if the derived group of the generic Mumford-Tate group of a family is simple, its part of positive period dimension coincides with the Hodge locus of p…
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
We state a conjectural criterion for identifying global integral points on a hyperbolic curve over $\mathbb{Z}$ in terms of Selmer schemes inside non-abelian cohomology functors with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}_p$-unipotent fundamental groups. For $\mathbb{P}^1\setminus \{0,1,\infty\}$ and the complement of the origin in semi-stable elliptic curves of rank 0, we compute the local image of global Selmer schemes, which then allows us to numerically confirm our conjecture in a wide range of cases.
We explore Tate-type conjectures over $p$-adic fields. We study a conjecture of Raskind that predicts the surjectivity of $$ ({\rm NS}(X_{\bar{K}}) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}_p)^{G_K} \longrightarrow H^2_{\rm et}(X_{\bar{K}},\mathbb{Q}_p(1))^{G_K} $$ if $X$ is smooth and projective over a $p$-adic field $K$ and has totally degenerate reduction. Sometimes, this is related to $p$-adic uniformisation. For abelian varieties, Raskind's conjecture is equivalent to the question whether $$ {\rm Hom}(A,B)\otimes{\mathbb{Q}}_p \,\to\, {\rm Hom}_{G_K}(V_p(A),V_p(B)) $$ is surjective if $A$ and $B$ ar…
We use perfectoid spaces associated to abelian varieties and Siegel moduli spaces to study torsion points and ordinary CM points. We reprove the Manin-Mumford conjecture i.e. Raynaud's theorem. We also prove the Tate-Voloch conjecture for a product of Siegel moduli spaces namely ordinary CM points outside a closed subvariety can not be p-adically too close to it.
We give applications of integral canonical models of orthogonal Shimura varieties and the Kuga-Satake morphism to the arithmetic of K3 surfaces over finite fields. We prove every K3 surface of finite height over a finite field admits a characteristic 0 lifting whose generic fiber is a K3 surface with complex multiplication. Combined with the results of Mukai and Buskin, we prove the Tate conjecture for the square of a K3 surface over a finite field. To obtain these results, we construct an analogue of Kisin's algebraic group for a K3 surface of finite height, and construct characteristic 0 lif…
