For a quantum Markov semigroup $\T$ on the algebra $\B$ with a faithful invariant state $ρ$, we can define an adjoint $\widetilde{\T}$ with respect to the scalar product determined by $ρ$. In this paper, we solve the open problems of characterising adjoints $\widetilde{\T}$ that are also a quantum Markov semigroup and satisfy the detailed balance condition in terms of the operators $H,L_k$ in the Gorini Kossakowski Sudarshan Lindblad representation $\Ll(x)=i[H,x] - {1/2}\sum_k(L^*_kL_k x-2L^*_kxL_k + xL^*_kL_k)$ of the generator of $\T$. We study the adjoint semigroup with respect to both scalar products $<a,b> = \tr(ρa^* b)$ and $<a,b> = \tr(ρ^{1/2} a^* ρ^{1/2}b)$.
In this paper we show several applications of the general theory developed in \cite{MV_I}, where we studied smoothing and ergodicity for infinite dimensional Markovian systems with hypocoercive type generator.
The structure of uniformly continuous quantum Markov semigroups with atomic decoherence-free subalgebra is established providing a naturaldecomposition of a Markovian open quantum system into its noiseless (decoherence-free) and irreducible (ergodic) components. This leads to a new characterisation of the structure of invariant states and a new method for finding decoherence-free subsystems and subspaces. Examples are presented to illustrate these results.
We start by considering infinite dimensional Markovian dynamics in R^m generated by operators of hypocoercive type and for such models we obtain short and long time pointwise estimates for all the derivatives, of any order and in any direction, along the semigroup. We then look at infinite dimensional models (in (Rm)^{Z ^d}) produced by the interaction of infinitely many finite dimensional dissipative dynamics of the type indicated above. For these infinite dimensional models we study finite speed of propagation of information, well-posedness of the semigroup, time behaviour of the derivatives…
We propose a definition of cycle representation for quantum Markov semigroups (qms) and quantum entropy production rate (qepr) in terms of the $ρ$-adjoint. We introduce the class of circulant qms, which admit non-equilibrium steady states but exhibit symmetries that allow us to compute explicitly the qepr, gain a deeper insight into the notion of cycle decomposition and prove that quantum detailed balance holds if and only if the qepr equals zero.
In this article we prove that the heat kernel attached to the non-archimedean elliptic pseudodifferential operators determine a Feller semigroup and a uniformly stochastically continuous C_0 transition function of some strong Markov processes X with state space (Q_p)^n. We explicitly write the Feller semigroup and the Markov transition function associated with the heat kernel. Also, we show that the symbols of these pseudo-differential operators are a negative definite function and moreover, that this symbols can be represented as a combination of a positive constant, a continuous homomorphism…
The quantum walks in the lattice spaces are represented as unitary evolutions. We find a generator for the evolution and apply it to further understand the walks. We first extend the discrete time quantum walks to continuous time walks. Then we construct the quantum Markov semigroup for quantum walks and characterize it in an invariant subalgebra. In the meanwhile, we obtain the limit distributions of the quantum walks in one-dimension with a proper scaling, which was obtained by Konno by a different method.
We provided a class of legitimate memory kernels leading to completely positive trace preserving dynamical maps. Our construction is based on a simple normalization procedure. Interestingly, when applied to the celebrated Wigner-Weisskopf theory it gives the standard Markovian evolution governed by the local master equation.
The probabilistic description of finite classical systems often leads to linear kinetic equations. A set of physically motivated mathematical requirements is accordingly formulated. We show that it necessarily implies that solutions of such a kinetic equation in the Heisenberg representation, define Markov semigroups on the space of observables. Moreover, a general H-theorem for the adjoint of such semigroups is formulated and proved provided that at least locally, an invariant measure exists. Under a certain continuity assumption, the Markov semigroup property is sufficient for a linear kinet…
We propose a definition of infinite dimensional Choi-Jamiolkowski state associated with a completely positive trace preserving map. We introduce the notion of Theta-KMS adjoint of a quantum Markov semigroup, which is identified with the time reversed semigroup. The break down of Theta-KMS symmetry (or Theta-standard quantum detailed balance in the sense of Fagnola-Umanita) is measured by means of the von Neumann relative entropy of the Choi-Jamiolkowski states associated with the semigroup and its Theta-KMS adjoint.
We construct relativistic quantum Markov semigroups from covariant completely positive maps. We proceed by generalizing a step in Stinespring's dilation to a general system of imprimitivity and basing it on Poincaré group. The resulting noise channels are relativistically consistent and the method is applicable to any fundamental particle, though we demonstrate it for the case of light-like particles. The Krauss decomposition of the relativistically consistent completely positive identity preserving maps (our set up is in Heisenberg picture) enables us to construct the covariant quantum Markov…
An invariant state of a quantum Markov semigroup is an equilibrium state if it satisfies a quantum detailed balance condition. In this paper, we introduce a notion of entropy production for faithful normal invariant states of a quantum Markov semigroup on B(h) as a numerical index measuring "how much far" they are from equilibrium. The entropy production is defined as the derivative of the relative entropy of the one-step forward and backward evolution in analogy with the classical probabilistic concept. We prove an explicit trace formula expressing the entropy production in terms of the compl…
In the present paper we show a link between bistochastic quantum channels and classical maps. The primary goal of this work is to analyse the multiplicative structure of the Birkhoff polytope of order 3 (the simplest non-trivial case). A suitable complex parametrization of the Birkhoff polytope is proposed, which reveals several its symmetries and characteristics, in particular: (i) the structure of Markov semigroups inside the Birkhoff polytope, (ii) the relation between the set of Markov time evolutions, the set of positive definite matrices and the set of divisible matrices. A condition for…
In this note we prove a refined version of the Christensen-Evans theorem for generators of uniformly continuous GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. We use this result to show the existence of GNS-symmetric extensions of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups. In particular, this implies that the generators of GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on finite-dimensional von Neumann algebra can be written in the form specified by Alicki's theorem.
By using the decomposition of the decoherence-free subalgebra N(T) in direct integrals of factors, we obtain a structure theorem for every uniformly continuous QMSs. Moreover we prove that, when there exists a faithful normal invariant state, N(T) has to be atomic and decoherence takes place.
Quantum Markov Semigroups (QMSs) originally arose in the study of the evolutions of irreversible open quantum systems. Mathematically, they are a generalization of classical Markov semigroups where the underlying function space is replaced by a non-commutative operator algebra. In the case when the QMS is uniformly continuous, theorems due to Lindblad \cite{lindblad}, Stinespring \cite{stinespring}, and Kraus \cite{kraus} imply that the generator of the semigroup has the form $$L(A)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}V_n^*AV_n +GA+AG^*$$ where $V_n$ and G are elements of the underlying operator algebra. In th…
Noether's Theorem on constants of the motion of dynamical systems has recently been extended to classical dissipative systems (Markovian semi-groups) by Baez and Fong. We show how to extend these results to the fully quantum setting of quantum Markov dynamics. For finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, we construct a mapping from observables to CP maps that leads to the natural analogue of their criterion of commutativity with the infinitesimal generator of the Markov dynamics. Using standard results on the relaxation of states to equilibrium under quantum dynamical semi-groups, we are able to cha…
In this article we introduce a complete gradient estimate for symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on von Neumann algebras equipped with a normal faithful tracial state, which implies semi-convexity of the entropy with respect to the recently introduced noncommutative 2-Wasserstein distance. We show that this complete gradient estimate is stable under tensor products and free products and establish its validity for a number of examples. As an application we prove a complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality with optimal constant for Poisson-type semigroups on free group factors.
We show that the generator of a GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroup can be written as the square of a derivation. This generalizes a result of Cipriani and Sauvageot for tracially symmetric semigroups. Compared to the tracially symmetric case, the derivations in the general case satisfy a twisted product rule, reflecting the non-triviality of their modular group. This twist is captured by the new concept of Tomita bimodules we introduce. If the quantum Markov semigroup satisfies a certain additional regularity condition, the associated Tomita bimodule can be realized inside the $L^2$ space …
The concept of balance between two state preserving quantum Markov semigroups on von Neumann algebras is introduced and studied as an extension of conditions appearing in the theory of quantum detailed balance. This is partly motivated by the theory of joinings. Balance is defined in terms of certain correlated states (couplings), with entangled states as a specific case. Basic properties of balance are derived and the connection to correspondences in the sense of Connes is discussed. Some applications and possible applications, including to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, are briefly e…
Let $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t})$ be a predual quantum Markov semigroup acting on the full 2 x 2 matrix algebra and having an absorbing pure state. We prove that for any initial state $ω$, the net of orthogonal measures representing the net of states $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t}(ω))$ satisfies a large deviation principle in the pure state space, with a rate function given in terms of the generator, and which does not depend on $ω$. This implies that $({\mathcal{T}}_{*t}(ω))$ is faithful for all $t$ large enough. Examples arising in weak coupling limit are studied.
Following up on the recent work on lower Ricci curvature bounds for quantum systems, we introduce two noncommutative versions of curvature-dimension bounds for symmetric quantum Markov semigroups over matrix algebras. Under suitable such curvature-dimension conditions, we prove a family of dimension-dependent functional inequalities, a version of the Bonnet-Myers theorem and concavity of entropy power in the noncommutative setting. We also provide examples satisfying certain curvature-dimension conditions, including Schur multipliers over matrix algebras, Herz-Schur multipliers over group alge…
In view of controlling finite dimensional open quantum systems, we provide a unified Lie-semigroup framework describing the structure of completely positive trace-preserving maps. It allows (i) to identify the Kossakowski-Lindblad generators as the Lie wedge of a subsemigroup, (ii) to link properties of Lie semigroups such as divisibility with Markov properties of quantum channels, and (iii) to characterise reachable sets and controllability in open systems. We elucidate when time-optimal controls derived for the analogous closed system already give good fidelities in open systems and when a m…
We study quantum Dirichlet forms and the associated symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on noncommutative $L^2$ spaces. It is known from the work of Cipriani and Sauvageot that these semigroups induce a first order differential calculus, and we use this differential calculus to define a noncommutative transport metric on the set of density matrices. This construction generalizes both the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on a large class of metric spaces as well as the discrete transport distance introduced by Maas, Mielke, and Chow-Huang-Li-Zhou. Assuming a Bakry-Émery-type gradient estimate, we sho…
This document presents the contents of three lectures delivered by the author at the Erdős Center School ``Optimal Transport on Quantum Structures'', Septemer 19-23, 2022 in Budapest, Hungary. It presents a fairly self contained account of an active topic of current research, and this account should be accessible to most graduate students, as befits lectures for a school. The main results are known, but there a number of new proofs and some new results.
A 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with a suitable non degenerate additive noise is considered. The regularity in the initial conditions of every Markov transition kernel associated to the equation is studied by a simple direct approach. A by-product of the technique is the equivalence of all transition probabilities associated to every Markov transition kernel.
We investigate some particular completely positive maps which admit a stable commutative Von Neumann subalgebra. The restriction of such maps to the stable algebra is then a Markov operator. In the first part of this article, we propose a recipe in order to find a quantum extension of a given Markov operator in the above sense. We show that the existence of such an extension is linked with the existence of a special form of dilation for the Markov operator studied by Attal in \cite{Att1}, reducing the problem to the extension of dynamical system. We then apply our method to the same problem in…
In the study of Markovian processes, one of the principal achievements is the equivalence between the $Φ$-Sobolev inequalities and an exponential decrease of the $Φ$-entropies. In this work, we develop a framework of Markov semigroups on matrix-valued functions and generalize the above equivalence to the exponential decay of matrix $Φ$-entropies. This result also specializes to spectral gap inequalities and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the random matrix setting. To establish the main result, we define a non-commutative generalization of the carré du champ operator, and prove a …
The purity, Tr(rho^2), measures how pure or mixed a quantum state rho is. It is well known that quantum dynamical semigroups that preserve the identity operator (which we refer to as unital) are strictly purity-decreasing transformations. Here we provide an almost complete characterization of the class of strictly purity-decreasing quantum dynamical semigroups. We show that in the case of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces a dynamical semigroup is strictly purity-decreasing if and only if it is unital, while in the infinite dimensional case, unitality is only sufficient.
Quantum Bernoulli noises (QBN, for short) are the family of annihilation and creation operators acting on Bernoulli functionals, which satisfy a canonical anti-commutation relation (CAR) in equal-time. In this paper, by using QBN, we first introduce a class of self-adjoint operators acting on Bernoulli functionals, which we call the weighted number operators. We then make clear spectral decompositions of these operators, and establish their commutation relations with the annihilation as well as the creation operators. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a weighted number op…
