We investigate the orbital selective Mott transition in two-band Hubbard models by means of the Gutzwiller variational theory. In particular, we study the influence of a finite local hybridisation between electrons in different orbitals on the metal-insulator transition.
Using a high-frequency expansion in periodically driven extended Hubbard models, where the strengths and ranges of density-density interactions are arbitrary, we obtain the effective interactions and bandwidth, which depend sensitively on the polarization of the driving field. Then, we numerically calculate modulations of correlation functions in a quarter-filled extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interactions on a triangular lattice with trimers after monocycle pulse excitation. We discuss how the resultant modulations are compatible with the effective interactions and bandwidth der…
We consider the standard repulsive Hubbard model with a flat lowest-energy band for two one-dimensional lattices (diamond chain and ladder) as well as for a two-dimensional lattice (bilayer) at half filling of the flat band. The considered models do not fall in the class of Mielke-Tasaki flat-band ferromagnets, since they do not obey the connectivity conditions. However, the ground-state ferromagnetism can emerge, if the flat band becomes dispersive. To study this kinetic-energy-driven ferromagnetism we use perturbation theory and exact diagonalization of finite lattices. We find as a typical …
Precise Determination of Phase Diagram for Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model with Filling- and Bandwidth-Control Mott Transitions: Grand-Canonical Path-Integral Renormalization Group Approach
We study by dynamical mean field theory the ground state of a quarter-filled Hubbard model of two bands with different bandwidths. At half-filling, this model is known to display an orbital selective Mott transition, with the narrower band undergoing Mott localisation while the wider one being still itinerant. At quarter-filling, the physical behaviour is different and to some extent reversed. The interaction generates an effective crystal field splitting, absent in the Hamiltonian, that tends to empty the narrower band in favour of the wider one, which also become more correlated than the for…
The ground state of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model is investigated by adopting improved wave functions that take into account intersite electron correlation beyond the Gutzwiller ansatz. The ground-state energy is lowered considerably, giving the best estimate of the ground-state energy for the 2D Hubbard model. There is a crossover from weakly to strongly correlated regions as the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ increases. The antiferromagnetic correlation induced by $U$ is reduced for hole doping when $U$ is large, being greater than the bandwidth, thus increasing the kinetic energy …
The extended Hubbard model in the zero-bandwidth limit is studied. The effective Hamiltonian consists of (i) on-site $U$ interaction and intersite (ii) density-density interaction $W$ and (iii) Ising-like magnetic exchange interaction $J$ (between the nearest-neighbors). We present rigorous (and analytical) results obtained within the transfer-matrix method for 1D-chain in two particular cases: (a) $W=0$ and $n=1$; (b) $U\rightarrow+\infty$ and $n=1/2$ ($W\neq 0$, $J\neq 0$). We obtain the exact formulas for the partition functions which enables to calculate thermodynamic properties such as en…
Interplay and competition between superconductivity and charge orderings in the zero-bandwidth limit of the extended Hubbard model with pair hopping and on-site attraction
The moiré superlattice formed by ABC stacked trilayer graphene aligned with a hexagonal boron nitride substrate (TG/h-BN) provides an interesting system where both the bandwidth and the topology can be tuned by an applied perpendicular electric field $D$ . Thus the TG/h-BN system can simulate both Hubbard model physics and nearly flat Chern band physics within one sample. We derive lattice models for both signs of $D$ (which controls the band topology) separately through explicit Wannier orbital construction and mapping of Coulomb interaction. When the bands are topologically trivial, we discu…
Mott transition in the Hubbard model on the hyper-kagome lattice
Superconductivity and inhomogeneous charge-ordered state in the two-Dimensional Hubbard model -- Off-Diagonal Wave Function Monte Carlo Studies of Hubbard Model IV
We present and implement a self-consistent D$Γ$A approach for multi-orbital models and ab initio materials calculations. It is applied to the one-band Hubbard model at various interaction strengths with and without doping, to the two-band Hubbard model with two largely different bandwidths, and to SrVO$_3$. The self-energy feedback reduces critical temperatures compared to dynamical mean-field theory, even to zero temperature in two-dimensions. Compared to a one-shot, non-self-consistent calculation the non-local correlations are significantly reduced when they are strong. In case non-local co…
Recent studies of electrical transport, both theoretical and experimental, near the bandwidth-tuned Mott metal-insulator transition have uncovered apparent quantum critical scaling of the electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures, despite the fact that the actual low-temperature phase transition is of first order. This raises the question whether there is a hidden Mott quantum critical point. Here we argue that the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model admits, in the low-temperature limit, asymptotically scale-invariant (i.e. power-law) solutions, corresponding to the metastab…
We study the ground state of the Hubbard model on a square lattice with two degenerate orbitals per site and at integer fillings as a function of onsite Hubbard repulsion $U$ and Hund's intra-atomic exchange coupling $J$. We use a variational slave-spin mean field (VSSMF) method which allows symmetry broken states to be studied within the computationally less intensive slave-spin mean field formalism, thus making the method more powerful to study strongly correlated electron physics. The results show that at half-filling, the ground state at smaller $U$ is a Slater antiferromagnet (AF) with su…
The room temperature (300 K) electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited LaNi_{x}V_{1-x}O_{3} thin films have been demonstrated. The substitution of early-transition metal (TM) V in LaVO_{3} thin films with late-TM Ni leads to the decreasing in out-of-plane lattice parameter. Doping of Ni does not alter the formal valence state of Ni and V in LaNi_{x}V_{1-x}O_{3} thin films, divulging the absence of carrier doping into the system. The valence band spectrum is observed to comprise of incoherent structure owing to the localized V 3d band along with the coherent structure at Fermi level. With …
We investigate strong electron-electron correlation effects on 2-dimensional van der Waals materials Nb$_3$X$_8$ (X=Cl, Br, I). We find that the monolayers Nb$_3$X$_8$ are ideal systems close to the strong correlation limit. They can be described by a half-filled single band Hubbard model in which the ratio between the Hubbard, U, and the bandwidth, W, U/W $\approx$ 5 $\sim$ 10. Both Mott and magnetic transitions of the material are calculated by the slave boson mean field theory. Doping the Mott state, a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ superconducting pairing instability is found. We also construct a t…
