Starting from the Rodrigues representation of polynomial solutions of the general hypergeometric-type differential equation complementary polynomials are constructed using a natural method. Among the key results is a generating function in closed form leading to short and transparent derivations of recursion relations and an addition theorem. The complementary polynomials satisfy a hypergeometric-type differential equation themselves, have a three-term recursion among others and obey Rodrigues formulas. Applications to the classical polynomials are given.
By building a second order adjoint difference equations on nonuniform lattices, the generalized Rodrigues type representation for the second kind solution of a second order difference equation of hypergeometric type on nonuniform lattices is given. The general solution of the equation in the form of a combination of a standard Rodrigues formula and a generalized Rodrigues formula is also established.
Complementary polynomials of Legendre polynomials are briefly presented, as well as those for the confluent and hypergeometric functions, relativistic Hermite polynomials and corresponding new pre-Laguerre polynomials. The generating functions are all given in closed form and are much simpler than the standard ones. Some are simply polynomials in two variables. New recursions and addition formulas are derived.
We give some structural formulas for the family of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of size $2\times 2$ introduced by C. Calderón et al. in an earlier work, which are common eigenfunctions of a differential operator of hypergeometric type. Specifically, we give a Rodrigues formula that allows us to write this family of polynomials explicitly in terms of the classical Jacobi polynomials, and write, for the sequence of orthonormal polynomials, the three-term recurrence relation and the Christoffel-Darboux identity. We obtain a Pearson equation, which enables us to prove that the sequence of …
We can write the polynomial solution of the second order linear differential equation of hypergeometric-type $$ ϕ(x)y''+ψ(x)y'+λy=0, $$ where $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are polynomials, $°ϕ\le 2$, $°ψ=1$ and $λ$ is a constant, among others, by using the Rodrigues operator $R_k(ϕ,{\bf u})$ (see \cite{coma2}) where $\bf u$ is certain linear operator which satisfies the distributional equation \begin{equation} \label{1} \frac{d}{dx}[ϕ{\bf u}]=ψ{\bf u}, \end{equation} as $$ P_n(x)=B_n R_n(ϕ,{\bf u})[1], \qquad B_n\ne 0,\quad n=0, 1, 2, ... $$ Taking this into account we construct the complementary polynomials. We introduce a new family of special functions, namely $q$-Charlier multiple orthogonal polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal with respect to $q$-analogues of Poisson distributions. We focus our attention on their structural properties. Raising and lowering operators as well as Rodrigues-type formulas are obtained. An explicit representation in terms of a $q$-analogue of the second of Appell's hypergeometric functions is given. A high-order linear $q$-difference equation with polynomial coefficients is deduced. Moreover, we show how to obtain the nearest neighbor recurrence relation fr…
Orthogonal polynomial solutions of an admissible potentially self-adjoint linear second-order partial $q$-difference equation of the hypergeometric type in two variables on $q$-linear lattices are analyzed. A $q$-Pearson's system for the orthogonality weight function, as well as for the difference derivatives of the solutions are presented, giving rise to a solution of the $q$-difference equation under study in terms of a Rodrigues-type formula. The monic orthogonal polynomial solutions are treated in detail, giving explicit formulae for the matrices in the corresponding recurrence relations t…
Zeilberger's algorithm provides a method to compute recurrence and differential equations from given hypergeometric series representations, and an adaption of Almquist and Zeilberger computes recurrence and differential equations for hyperexponential integrals. Further versions of this algorithm allow the computation of recurrence and differential equations from Rodrigues type formulas and from generating functions. In particular, these algorithms can be used to compute the differential/difference and recurrence equations for the classical continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials from th…
Matrix-valued analogues of the little q-Jacobi polynomials are introduced and studied. For the 2x2-matrix-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials explicit expressions for the orthogonality relations, Rodrigues formula, three-term recurrence relation and their relation to matrix-valued q-hypergeometric series and the scalar-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials are presented. The study is based on a matrix-valued q-difference operator, which is a q-analogue of Tirao's matrix-valued hypergeometric differential operator.
We show a connection formula for the $q$-confluent hypergeometric functions ${}_2φ_1(a,b;0;q,x)$. Combining our connection formula with Zhang's connection formula for ${}_2φ_0(a,b;-;q,x)$, we obtain the connection formula for the $q$-confluent hypergeometric equation in the matrix form. Also we obtain the connection formula of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions by taking the limit $q\to 1^{-}$ of our connection formula.
We solve connection problem between fundamental solutions at singular points $0$ and $1$ for the generalized hypergeometric function, using analytic continuation of the integral representation. All connection coefficients are products of the sine and the cosecant.
We introduce and analyse a new family of multiple orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometric type with respect to two measures supported on the positive real line which can be described in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions of the second kind. These two measures form a Nikishin system. Our focus is on the multiple orthogonal polynomials for indices on the step line. The sequences of the derivatives of both type I and type II polynomials with respect to these indices are again multiple orthogonal and they correspond to the original sequences with shifted parameters. For the type I polyno…
We study a connection problem between the fundamental systems of solutions at singular points $0$ and $1$ for the generalized hypergeometric equation which is satisfied by the generalized hypergeometric series ${}_nF_{n-1}$. In general, the local solution space around $x=1$ consists of one dimensional singular solution space and $n-1$ dimensional holomorphic solution space. Therefore in the case of $n\ge3$, the expression of connection matrix depends on the choice of the fundamental system of solutions at $x=1$. On the connection problem for ordinary differential equations, Schäfke and Schmidt…
In this article we present a method to implement orthogonal polynomials and many other special functions in Computer Algebra systems enabling the user to work with those functions appropriately, and in particular to verify different types of identities for those functions. Some of these identities like differential equations, power series representations, and hypergeometric representations can even dealt with algorithmically, i.\ e.\ they can be computed by the Computer Algebra system, rather than only verified. The types of functions that can be treated by the given technique cover the genera…
We work on the SCE problems. We establish the expressions of three integrals' sequences, related to it, in terms of five families of polynomials. Relations between these integrals are demonstrated and we focus on one of the three problems : the determination of the family of polynomials noted $e_n (n \in \mathbb{N})$. We show taht these polynomials are hypergeometric. From this property, the NU method can be applied to this family. We have been able to determine the Rodrigues formula. These polynomials have properties that distinguish them from classical hypergeometric polynomials. We state an…
In this paper, we give an algorithm to generate connection formulas of generalized hypergeometric functions ${}_p F_{p-1}$ for degenerated values of parameters. We also show that these connection formulas give a fast method for numerical evaluation of generalized hypergeometric functions near $\infty$.
We evaluate the sum of Gauss hypergeometric functions \[S(μ,c;x)=\sum_{k\geq 0} \bl(\frac{1-x}{1+μ}\br)^k\,{}_2F_1(\fs k+\fs, \fs k+1;c;x)\] for $x\in [-1,1]$ and positive parameters $μ$ and $c$. The domain of absolute convergence of this series is established by determining the growth of the hypergeometric function for $k\to+\infty$. An application to Galton-Watson branching processes arising in the theory of stochastic processes is presented. A new class of positive integer-valued distributions with power tails is introduced.
A new set of multiple orthogonal polynomials of both type I and type II with respect to two weight functions involving Gauss' hypergeometric function on the interval $(0,1)$ is studied. This type of polynomials have direct applications in the investigation of singular values of products of Ginibre matrices, in the analysis of rational solutions to Painlevé equations and are connected with branched continued fractions and total positivity problems in combinatorics. The pair of orthogonality measures is shown to be a Nikishin system and to satisfy a matrix Pearson-type differential equation. The…
A connection between Romanovski polynomials and those polynomials that solve the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse and hyperbolic Scarf potential is established. The map is constructed by reworking the Rodrigues formula in an elementary and natural way. The generating function is summed in closed form from which recursion relations and addition theorems follow. Relations to some classical polynomials are also given.
In this paper, we propose a general method to express explicitly the inversion and the connection coefficients between two basic hypergeometric polynomial sets. As application, we consider some $d$-orthogonal basic hypergeometric polynomials and we derive expansion formulae corresponding to all the families within the $q$-Askey scheme.
The study of $-1$ orthogonal polynomials viewed as $q =-1$ limits of the $q$-orthogonal polynomials is pursued. This paper present the continuous polynomials part of the $-1$ analog of the $q$-Askey scheme. A compendium of the properties of all the continuous $-1$ hypergeometric polynomials and their connections is provided.
We generalize generating functions for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Laguerre, and Wilson polynomials. These generalizations of generating functions are accomplished through series rearrangement using connection relations with one free parameter for these orthogonal polynomials. We also use orthogonality relations to determine corresponding definite integrals.
We use connection relations and series rearrangement to generalize generating functions for several higher continuous orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme, namely the Wilson, continuous dual Hahn, continuous Hahn, and Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. We also determine corresponding definite integrals using the orthogonality relations for these polynomials.
We give an example of solutions of the connection problem associated with a certain system of linear $q$-difference equations recently introduced by Park. The result contains a connection formulas of the $q$-Lauricella hypergeometric function $φ_{D}$ and those of the $q$-generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{N+1}φ_{N}$ as special cases.
We derive generalized generating functions for basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials by applying connection relations with one free parameter to them. In particular, we generalize generating functions for the Askey-Wilson, continuous $q$-ultraspherical/Rogers, little $q$-Laguerre/Wall, and $q$-Laguerre polynomials. Depending on what type of orthogonality these polynomials satisfy, we derive corresponding definite integrals, infinite series, bilateral infinite series, and $q$-integrals.
Reduction formulas for sums of products of hypergeometric functions can be traced back to Euler. This topic has an intimate connection to summation and transformation formulas, contiguous relations and algebraic properties of the (generalized) hypergeometric differential equation. Over recent several years, important discoveries have been made in this subject by Gorelov, Ebisu, Beukers and Jouhet and Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang. In this paper, we give a generalization of Feng, Kuznetsov and Yang identity covering also Ebisu's and Gorelov's formulas as particular cases.
We introduce the power collection method for easily deriving connection relations for certain hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in the $(q-)$Askey scheme. We summarize the full-extent to which the power collection method may be used. As an example, we use the power collection method to derive connection and connection-type relations for Meixner and Krawtchouk polynomials. These relations are then used to derive generalizations of generating functions for these orthogonal polynomials. The coefficients of these generalized generating functions are in general, given in term of multiple hyperg…
Based on Spiridonov's analysis of elliptic generalizations of the Gauss hypergeometric function, we develop a common framework for 7-parameter families of generalized elliptic, hyperbolic and trigonometric univariate hypergeometric functions. In each case we derive the symmetries of the generalized hypergeometric function under the Weyl group of type E_7 (elliptic, hyperbolic) and of type E_6 (trigonometric) using the appropriate versions of the Nassrallah-Rahman beta integral, and we derive contiguous relations using fundamental addition formulas for theta and sine functions. The top level de…
Integral representations of hypergeometric functions proved to be a very useful tool for studying their properties. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we extend the known representations to arbitrary values of the parameters and show that the extended representations can be interpreted as examples of regularizations of integrals containing Meijer's $G$ function. Second, we give new applications of both, known and extended representations. These include: inverse factorial series expansion for the Gauss type function, new information about zeros of the Bessel and Kummer type functions,…
We show connection formulae of local solutions of the Ramanujan equation between the origin and the infinity. These solutions are given by the Ramanujan function, the $q$-Airy function and the divergent basic hypergeometric series ${}_2φ_0(0,0;-;q,x)$. We use two different $q$-Borel-Laplace transformations to obtain our connection formulae.
This paper describes a method to find a connection between combinatorial identities and hypergeometric series with a number of examples. Combinatorial identities can often be written as hypergeometric series with unit argument. In a number of cases these hypergeometric series are balanced and can be reduced to a simpler form. In this paper some combinatorial identities are proved using this method assuming that the results in the tables of Prudnikov et al. [12] are proven without using hypergeometric functions.
In this paper we investigate the Meijer's $G$ function $G^{p,1}_{p+1,p+1}$ which for certain parameter values represents the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of Meijer-Nørlund function $G^{p,0}_{p,p}$. Our results for $G^{p,1}_{p+1,p+1}$ include: a regularization formula for overlapping poles, a connection formula with the Meijer-Nørlund function, asymptotic formulas around the origin and unity, formulas for the moments, a hypergeometric transform and a sign stabilization theorem for growing parameters. We further employ the properties of $G^{p,1}_{p+1,p+1}$ to calculate the Hadamard fini…
We construct the q-twisted cohomology associated with the q-multiplicative function of Jordan-Pochhammer type at |q|=1. In this framework, we prove the Heine's relations and a connection formula for the q-hypergeometric function of the Barnes type. We also prove an orthogonality relation of the q-little Jacobi polynomials at |q|=1.
We study the structure of analytic continuation of solutions of an even rank system of linear ordinary differential equations of Okubo normal form (ONF). We develop an adjustment of the method by using the Euler integral for evaluating the connection formulas of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(α, β, γ; x)$ to the system of ONF. We obtain recursive relations between connection coefficients for the system of ONF and ones for the underlying system of half rank.
In the lecture notes we start off with an introduction to the $q$-hypergeometric series, or basic hypergeometric series, and we derive some elementary summation and transformation results. Then the $q$-hypergeometric difference equation is studied, and in particular we study solutions given in terms of power series at $0$ and at $\infty$. Factorisations of the corresponding operator are considered in terms of a lowering operator, which is the $q$-derivative, and the related raising operator. Next we consider the $q$-hypergeometric operator in a special case, and we show that there is a natural…
We show that the cohomology intersection number of a twisted Gauss-Manin connection with regularization condition is a rational function. As an application, we obtain a new quadratic relation associated to period integrals of a certain family of K3 surfaces.
We describe a solution of the Gauss hypergeometric equation, $F(α,β,γ;z)$ by power series in paramaters $α,β,γ$ whose coefficients are $\Z$ linear combinations of multiple polylogarithms. And using the representation and connection reletions of solutions of the hypergeometric equation, we show some relations of multiple zeta values.
In this paper, we explore the symmetric nature of the terminating basic hypergeometric series representations of the Askey--Wilson polynomials and the corresponding terminating basic hypergeometric transformations that these polynomials satisfy. In particular we identify and classify the set of 4 and 7 equivalence classes of terminating balanced ${}_4ϕ_3$ and terminating very-well poised ${}_8W_7$ basic hypergeometric series which are connected with the Askey--Wilson polynomials. We study the inversion properties of these equivalence classes and also identify the connection of both sets of equ…
The main objects of the investigation presented in this paper are branched-continued-fraction representations of ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line with respect to linear functionals or measures whose moments are ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols. This is an interesting case study of the recently found connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions that gives a clear example of how this connection leads to considerable advances on both topics. We obtain new results about generating …
In this article, we solve the connection problem of the Hermite polynomials with the classical continuous orthogonal polynomials belonging to Askey scheme, using the hypergeometric functions method combined is with the work the Fields and Ismail.
Using the direct relation between the Gegenbauer polynomials and the Ferrers function of the first kind, we compute interrelations between certain Jacobi polynomials, Meixner polynomials, and the Ferrers function of the first kind. We then compute Rodrigues-type and orthogonality relations for Ferrers functions of the first and second kinds. In the remainder of the paper using the relation between Gegenbauer polynomials and the Ferrers function of the first kind we derive connection and linearization relations, some definite integral and series expansions, some asymptotic expansions of Mehler-…
We show connections between a special type of addition formulas and a theorem of Stieltjes and Rogers. We use different techniques to derive the desirable addition formulas. We apply our approach to derive special addition theorems for Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions. We also derive several additions theorems for basic hypergeometric functions. Applications to the evaluation of Hankel determinants are also given .
We give a brief account of the key properties of elliptic hypergeometric integrals -- a relatively recently discovered top class of transcendental special functions of hypergeometric type. In particular, we describe an elliptic generalization of Euler's and Selberg's beta integrals, elliptic analogue of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function and some multivariable elliptic hypergeometric functions on root systems. The elliptic Fourier transformation and corresponding integral Bailey lemma technique is outlined together with a connection to the star-triangle relation and Coxeter relations for …
We introduce two q-analogues of the 2D-Hermite polynomials which are functions of two complex variables. We derive explicit formulas, orthogonality relations, raising and lowering operator relations, generating functions, and Rodrigues formulas for both families. We also introduce a q-2D analogue of the disk polynomials (Zernike polynomials) and derive similar formulas for them as well including evaluating certain connection coefficients. Some of the generating functions may be related to Rogers-Ramanujan type identities.
We establish a new connection between moments of $n \times n$ random matrices $X_n$ and hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we consider moments $\mathbb{E}\mathrm{Tr} X_n^{-s}$ as a function of the complex variable $s \in \mathbb{C}$, whose analytic structure we describe completely. We discover several remarkable features, including a reflection symmetry (or functional equation), zeros on a critical line in the complex plane, and orthogonality relations. An application of the theory resolves part of an integrality conjecture of Cunden et al. [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. S…
Over the last decade it has become clear that discrete Painlevé equations appear in a wide range of important mathematical and physical problems. Thus, the question of recognizing a given non-autonomous recurrence as a discrete Painlevé equation and determining its type according to Sakai's classification scheme, understanding whether it is equivalent to some known (model) example, and especially finding an explicit change of coordinates transforming it to such an example, becomes one of the central ones. Fortunately, Sakai's geometric theory provides an almost algorithmic procedure for answer…
