We calculate the tunneling density of states for a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid placed under a strong bias voltage. For the tunneling through a side-coupled point contact, one can observe the power law singularities in the tunneling density of states separately for the right- and left-movers despite the point-like tunnel contact. Deviations of the nonequilibrium tunneling exponents from the equilibrium case are discussed.
We establish a theoretical framework for artificial control of the power-law singularities in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid states. The exponent governing the power-law behaviors is found to increase significantly with an increase in the amplitude of the periodic electric field modulation applied externally to the system. This field-induced shift in the exponent indicates the tunability of the transport properties of quasi-one-dimensional electron systems.
We study persistent currents in semiconductor ballistic rings with spin-orbit Rashba interaction. We use as a working model the multicomponent Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid which arises due to the nonparabolic dispersion relations of electrons in the rings with rather strong spin-orbit coupling. This approach predicts some new characteristic features of persistent currents, which may be observed in experimental studies of semiconductor ballistic rings.
We present experimental results on the tunneling into the edge of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) obtained with GaAs/AlGaAs cleaved edge overgrown structures. The electronic properties of the edge of these systems can be described by a one-dimensional chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid when the filling factor of the 2DEG is very small. Here we focus on the region where the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid breaks down to form a standard Fermi liquid close to $ν=1$ and show that we recover a universal curve, which describes all existing data.
We study both noncentrosymmetric and time-reversal breaking Weyl semimetal systems under a strong magnetic field with the Coulomb interaction. The three-dimensional bulk system is reduced to many mutually interacting quasi-one-dimensional wires. Each strongly correlated wire can be approached within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid formalism. Including impurity scatterings, we inspect the localization effect and the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity. The effect of a large number of Weyl points in real materials is also discussed.
Effects of a single impurity potential on bulk properties of a spinful Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid is studied. A boundary bosonization technique is developed to include the impurity potential of {\it arbitrary} strength $V$. Our new bosonization formula for fermion field $ψ$ smoothly connects the two existing expressions in the strong ($V = \infty$) and the weak ($V = 0$) impurity limits. With use of the formula, we found the TL parameters determined from the long-distance correlation functions are renormalized due to the partial transmission through the impurity potential.
Electronic waveguides in graphene formed by counterpropagating snake states in suitable inhomogeneous magnetic fields are shown to constitute a realization of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Due to the spatial separation of the right- and left-moving snake states, this non-Fermi liquid state induced by electron-electron interactions is essentially unaffected by disorder. We calculate the interaction parameters accounting for the absence of Galilei invariance in this system, and thereby demonstrate that non-Fermi liquid effects are significant and tunable in realistic geometries.
We develop a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method for quantum impurities coupled to interacting quantum wires described by a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The method is negative-sign free for any values of the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter, which is rigorously proved, and thus, efficient low-temperature calculations are possible. Duality between electrons and bosons in one dimensional systems allows us to construct a simple formula for the CTQMC algorithm in these systems. We studied the conductance renormalization and conductivity of multi-subband Tomonaga-Luttinger models with inter-subband interactions. We found that, as in single-band systems, the conductance of a multi-subband system with an arbitrary number of subbands is not renormalized due to interaction between electrons. We derived a formula for the conductivity in multi-subband models. We applied it to a simplified case and found that inter-subband interaction enhances the conductivity, which is contrary to the intra-subband repulsive interaction, and that the conductivity is further enhanced for a l…
Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid theory is formulated for metallic carbon nanotubes with open boundaries. Both cases of single- and multi-wall nanotubes are discussed. Based on this theory, spatial variation of the charge density from an edge is investigated with taking account of the shift of the chemical potential which expresses the carrier injection to the nanotube. The charge density has the spatially independent part and the oscillatory component. The dissipation induced by a metallic gate on the low-energy properties of interacting 1D electron liquids is studied. As function of the distance to the gate, or the electron density in the wire, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state to two kinds of dissipative phases, one of them with a finite spatial correlation length. We also define a dual model, which describes an attractive one dimensional metal with a Josephson coupling to a dirty metallic lead.
We report that the conductance of macroscopic multiwall nanotube (MWNT) bundles under pressure shows power laws in temperature and voltage, as corresponding to a network of bulk-bulk connected Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids (LL). Contrary to individual MWNT, where the observed power laws are attributed to Coulomb blockade, the measured ratio for the end and bulk obtained exponents, ~2.4, can only be accounted for by LL theory. At temperatures characteristic of interband separation, it increases due to thermal population of the conducting sheets unoccupied bands.
We investigate tunneling between two spinful Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) realized, e.g., as two crossed nanowires or quantum Hall edge states. When injecting into each TLL one electron of opposite spin, the dc current measured after the crossing differs for singlet, triplet, or product states. This is a striking new non-Fermi liquid feature because the (mean) current in a noninteracting beam splitter is insensitive to spin entanglement. We report encapsulated C60 molecules on electron transport in carbon-nanotube peapod quantum dots. We find atomic-like behaviors with doubly degenerate electronic levels, which exist only around ground states, by single electron spectroscopy measured at low back-gate voltages (Vbg's). Correlation with presence of nearly free electrons (NFEs) unique to the peapods is discussed. In contrast, we find that encapsulated C60 molecules do not affect to single charging effect. We propose a formalism which uses boundary conditions imposed on the Luttinger liquid (LL) to describe the transport properties of a LL coupled to reservoirs. The various boundary conditions completely determine linear transport in the joint system reservoirs+LL. We study the current produced in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid by an applied bias and by weak, point-like impurity potentials which are oscillating in time. We use bosonization to perturbatively calculate the current up to second order in the impurity potentials. In the regime of small bias and low pumping frequency, both the DC and AC components of the current have power law dependences on the bias and pumping frequencies with an exponent 2K - 1 for spinless electrons, where K is the interaction parameter. Quantum impurity problems in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) are reviewed with emphasis on their analogy to the Kondo problem in Fermi liquids. First, the problem of a static impurity in a spinless TLL is considered, which is related to the model studied in the context of the macroscopic quantum coherence. In the low-energy limit the TLL is essentially cut into two pieces when interaction is repulsive. The orthogonality catastrophe in a TLL is then discussed. The effective field theory of the fractional quantum Hall edge is reformulated from microscopic dynamics. Noncommutative Chern-Simons theory is a microscopic description for the quantum Hall fluid. We use it for reference. Considering relabeling symmetry of the electrons and incompressibility of the fluid, we obtain a constraint and derive a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory containing interaction terms. We calculate one-loop corrections to the phonon and electron propagators and get a new tunneling exponent. It agrees with experiments.
It is shown that Wen's effective theory correctly describes the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid at the edge of a system of non-interacting composite fermions. However, the weak residual interaction between composite fermions appears to be a relevant perturbation. The filling factor dependence of the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter is estimated for interacting composite fermions in a microscopic approach and satisfactory agreement with experiment is achieved. It is suggested that the electron field operator may not have a simple representation in the effective one dimensional theory.
In one-dimensional conductors, interactions result in correlated electronic systems. At low energy, a hallmark signature of the so-called Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLL) is the universal conductance curve predicted in presence of an impurity. A seemingly different topic is the quantum laws of electricity, when distinct quantum conductors are assembled in a circuit. In particular, the conductances are suppressed at low energy, a phenomenon called dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB). We study a homogeneous Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with backscattering potential. A perturbative computation of the conductance at and near resonance is given. We find that the backscattering of one electron dominates that of two electrons for an interaction parameter $K\geq 1/3$ and that the resonance point depends on temperature. Our results may be relevant for recent experiments on shot-noise in FQHE, where the charge 1/3 and not $2*1/3$ is measured on resonance.

There have been conflicting reports on the electronic properties of twin domain boundaries (DBs) in MoSe2 monolayer, including the quantum well states, charge density wave, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). Here we employ low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy to reveal both the quantum confinement effect and signatures of TLL in the one-dimensional DBs. The data do not support the CDW at temperatures down to ~5 K.
We study the electrical transport properties of well-contacted ballistic single-walled carbon nanotubes in a three-terminal configuration at low temperatures. We observe signatures of strong electron-electron interactions: the conductance exhibits bias-voltage-dependent amplitudes of quantum interference oscillation, and both the current noise and Fano factor manifest bias-voltage-dependent power-law scalings. We analyze our data within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid model using the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism and find qualitative and quantitative agreement between experiment and theory.
We demonstrate the effects of geometric perturbation on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) states in a long, thin, hollow cylinder whose radius varies periodically. The variation in the surface curvature inherent to the system gives rise to a significant increase in the power-law exponent of the single-particle density of states. The increase in the TLL exponent is caused by a curvature-induced potential that attracts low-energy electrons to region that has large curvature.
We study the tunneling current through a mesoscopic two-terminal ring with spin-orbit coupling, which is threaded by a magnetic flux. The electron-electron interaction in the ring is described in terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger model which also allows us to account for a capacitive coupling between the ring and the gate electrode. Wen's chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger model for the edge of an m-layer quantum Hall system of total filling factor nu=m/(pm +- 1) with even p, is derived as a random-phase approximation of the Chern-Simons theory for these states. The theory allows for a description of edges both in and out of equilibrium, including their collective excitation spectrum and the tunneling exponent into the edge. We study time resolved transport properties of a $Y$-junction composed of interacting one-dimensional quantum wires using a bosonization approach. In particular, we investigate the AC conductivity of the $Y$-junction formed from finite length Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires based on a plasmon scattering approach for injected charge pulses of arbitrary shapes. We report on the first direct observation of a transition from a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid to a Fermi liquid behavior in potassium intercalated mats of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). We consider a non-chiral Luttinger liquid in the presence of a backscattering Hamiltonian which has an extended range. Right/left moving fermions at a given location can thus be converted as left/right moving fermions at a different location, within a specific range. In this paper, we propose some new strongly correlated gapless states (or critical states) of spin-1/2 electrons in 1+1-dimensions, such as doped anti-ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising chain. We find doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain to be a different metallic phase from the doped ferromagnetic Ising chain, despite the two have identical symmetry. The doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain has a finite energy gap for all charge-1 fermionic excitations even without pairing caused by attractive interactions, resembling the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped high Tc superconductors. The dc Josephson effect in a one-dimensional Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid is studied on the basis of two bosonized models. We first consider a TL liquid sandwiched between two superconductors with a strong barrier at each interface. Both the interfaces are assumed to be perfect if the barrier potential is absent. We next consider a TL liquid with open boundaries, weakly coupled with two superconductors. We report strong electron-electron interactions in quantum wires etched from an InAs quantum well, a material known to have strong spin-orbit interactions. We find that the current through the wires as a function of the bias voltage and temperature follows the universal scaling behavior of a Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid. Using a universal scaling formula, we extract the interaction parameter and find strong electron-electron interactions, increasing as the wires become more depleted. A phase operator formulation for a recent model of interacting one-dimensional fermions in a harmonic trap is developed. The resulting theory is similar to the corresponding approach for the Luttinger model with open boundary conditions (OBC). However, in place of the spatial coordinate $z$, a dimensionless variable $u$ defined on the unit circle appears as argument of the phase fields and $u$ is non-linearly related to $z$. The local density of states (LDOS) in a one-dimensional helical channel of finite length is studied within a Tomonaga-Luttinger model at zero temperature. Two particular cases of loop and Josephson junction geometries are considered. The LDOS, as a function of energy $ω$ measured from the Fermi level, consists of equally spaced spikes of the $δ$-function type, and electron-electron interactions modify their relative height. It is shown that, in the loop geometry, the height of spikes decreases as $ω\to 0$ everywhere in the system. It is also shown that, in the Josephson junction, the behavior …
We investigate the low energy behavior of local density of states in metallic C$_{60}$ polymers theoretically. The multichannel bosonization method is applied to electronic band structures evaluated from first principles calculation, by which the effects of electronic correlation and nanoscale corrugation in the atomic configuration are fully taken into account. We obtain a closed-form expression for the power law anomalies in the local density of states, which successfully describes the experimental observation on the \fu polymers in a quantitative manner. It has been recently discovered that in 3D topological insulators each skew dislocation can host a pair of 1D topological states a helical TLL. We study the effect that resistive regions have on the conductance of a quantum wire with interacting electrons which is connected to Fermi liquid leads. Using the bosonization formalism and a Rayleigh dissipation function to model the power dissipation, we use both scattering theory and Green's function techniques to derive the DC conductance. The resistive regions are generally found to lead to incoherent transport. For a single wire, we find that the resistance adds in series to the contact resistance of h/e^2 for spinless electrons, and the total resistance is independent of the Luttinger …

We evaluate the spectral function of interacting fermions in one dimension. Contrary to the Tomonaga-Luttinger model, our treatment accounts for the nonlinearity of the free fermion spectrum. In a striking departure from the Luttinger liquid theory, the spectrum nonlinearity restores the main feature of the Fermi liquid: a Lorentzian peak in the spectral function on the particle mass-shell. At the same time, the spectral function displays a power-law singularity on the hole mass-shell, similar to that in the Luttinger liquid.
We reformulate the Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid theory for quasi-one-dimensional Fermion systems with many subbands across the Fermi energy. Our theory enables us to obtain a rigorous expression of the local density of states (LDOS) for general multichannel quantum wires, describing how the power-law anomalies of LDOS depend on inter- and intra-subbands couplings as well as the Fermi velocity of each band.
