There have been conflicting reports on the electronic properties of twin domain boundaries (DBs) in MoSe2 monolayer, including the quantum well states, charge density wave, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). Here we employ low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy to reveal both the quantum confinement effect and signatures of TLL in the one-dimensional DBs. The data do not support the CDW at temperatures down to ~5 K.
We report strong electron-electron interactions in quantum wires etched from an InAs quantum well, a material known to have strong spin-orbit interactions. We find that the current through the wires as a function of the bias voltage and temperature follows the universal scaling behavior of a Tomonaga--Luttinger liquid. Using a universal scaling formula, we extract the interaction parameter and find strong electron-electron interactions, increasing as the wires become more depleted. We establish theoretically that spin-orbit interactions cause only minor modifications of the interaction paramet…
Topological insulators are frequently also one of the best known thermoelectric materials. It has been recently discovered that in 3D topological insulators each skew dislocation can host a pair of 1D topological states a helical TLL. We derive exact analytical formulas for thermoelectric Seebeck coefficient in TLL and investigate up to what extent one can ascribe the outstanding thermoelectric properties of Bi 2 Te 3 to these 1D topological states. To this end we take a model of a dense dislocation network and find an analytic formula for an overlap between 1D (the TLL) and 3D electronic stat…
We investigate the physics of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spin-polarized fermions superimposed on an ion chain. This compound system features (attractive) long-range interspecies interactions. By means of density matrix renormalization group techniques we compute the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter and speed of sound as a function of the relative atom/ion density and the two quantum defect parameters, namely, the even and odd short-range phases which characterize the short-range part of the atom-ion polarization potential. The presence of ions is found to allow critical tuning of the at…
Recently, monolayer CoSb/SrTiO$_3$ has been proposed as a candidate harboring interfacial superconductivity in analogy with monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$. Experimentally, while the CoSb-based compounds manifesting as nanowires and thin films have been realized on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, serving as a rich playground, their electronic structures are still unknown and yet to be resolved. Here, we have fabricated CoSb$_{1-x}$ nanoribbons with quasi-one-dimensional stripes on SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure by in situ angle-resolved photoem…
Topological quantum matter is characterized by non-trivial global invariants of the bulk which induce gapless electronic states at its boundaries. A case in point are two-dimensional topological insulators (2D-TI) which host one-dimensional (1D) conducting helical edge states protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS) against single-particle backscattering (SPB). However, as two-particle scattering is not forbidden by TRS [1], the existence of electronic interactions at the edge and their notoriously strong impact on 1D states may lead to an intriguing interplay between topology and electronic …

The Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) concept is believed to generically describe the strongly-correlated physics of one-dimensional systems at low temperatures. A hallmark signature in 1D conductors is the quantum phase transition between metallic and insulating states induced by a single impurity. However, this transition impedes experimental explorations of real-world TLLs. Furthermore, its theoretical treatment, explaining the universal energy rescaling of the conductance at low temperatures, has so far been achieved exactly only for specific interaction strengths. Quantum simulation can pro…
We consider a non-chiral Luttinger liquid in the presence of a backscattering Hamiltonian which has an extended range. Right/left moving fermions at a given location can thus be converted as left/right moving fermions at a different location, within a specific range. We perform a momentum shell renormalization group treatment which gives the evolution of the relative degrees of freedom of this Hamiltonian contribution under the renormalization flow, and we study a few realistic examples of this extended backscattering Hamiltonian. We find that, for repulsive Coulomb interaction in the Luttinge…

In this paper, we propose some new strongly correlated gapless states (or critical states) of spin-1/2 electrons in 1+1-dimensions, such as doped anti-ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising chain. We find doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain to be a different metallic phase from the doped ferromagnetic Ising chain, despite the two have identical symmetry. The doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain has a finite energy gap for all charge-1 fermionic excitations even without pairing caused by attractive interactions, resembling the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped high Tc superconductors. Applying a transverse…
