In general, for higher order elliptic equations and boundary value problems like the biharmonic equation and the linear clamped plate boundary value problem neither a maximum principle nor a comparison principle or -- equivalently -- a positivity preserving property is available. The problem is rather involved since the clamped boundary conditions prevent the boundary value problem {from} being reasonably written as a system of second order boundary value problems.
It is shown that, on the other hand, for bounded smooth domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, the negative part of the corresponding Green's function is "small" when compared with its singular positive part, provided $n\ge 3$.
Moreover, the biharmonic Green's function in balls $B\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ under Dirichlet (i.e. clamped) boundary conditions is known explicitly and is positive. It has been known for some time that positivity is preserved under small regular perturbations of the domain, if $n=2$. In the present paper, such a stability result is proved for $n\ge 3$. Keywords: Biharmonic Green's functions, positivity, almost positivity, blow-up procedure.
It is well known that for higher order elliptic equations the positivity preserving property (PPP) may fail. In striking contrast to what happens under Dirichlet boundary conditions, we prove that the PPP holds for the biharmonic operator on rectangular domains under partially hinged boundary conditions, i.e. nonnegative loads yield positive solutions. The result follows by fine estimates of the Fourier expansion of the corresponding Green function.
This paper is concerned with the positivity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear parabolic equations with the biharmonic operator as fourth order elliptic principal part. Generally, Cauchy problems for parabolic equations of fourth order have no positivity preserving property due to the change of sign of the fundamental solution. One has eventual local positivity for positive initial data, but on short time scales, one will in general have also regions of negativity. The first goal of this paper is to find sufficient conditions on initial data which ensure the existence …
In this paper, we consider a biharmonic equation with respect to the Dirichlet problem on a domain of a locally finite graph. Using the variation method, we prove that the equation has two distinct solutions under certain conditions.
We investigate here the nonlinear elliptic Hénon type equation: $$\D^{2} u= |x|^a|u|^{p-1}u \; \,\,\mbox{in}\,\,\,\, \R^{n}_{+}, \quad \quad u =\frac{\partial u}{\partial x_n} = 0 \quad \mbox{in}\,\,\,\, \partial \R^{n}_{+},$$ with $p>1$ and $n\geq 2$. In particular, we prove some Liouville type theorems for stable at infinity solutions. The main methods used are the integral estimates, the Pohozaev-type identity and the monotonicity formula.
We prove full boundary regularity for minimizing biharmonic maps with smooth Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our result, similarly as in the case of harmonic maps, is based on the nonexistence of nonconstant boundary tangent maps. With the help of recently derivated boundary monotonicity formula for minimizing biharmonic maps by Altuntas we prove compactness at the boundary following Scheven's interior argument. Then we combine those results with the conditional partial boundary regularity result for stationary biharmonic maps by Gong--Lamm--Wang.
In the framework of Hilbert spaces we shall give necessary and sufficient conditions to define a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator via Dirichlet principle. For singular Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators we will establish Laurent expansion near singularities as well as Mittag--Leffler expansion for the related quadratic form. The established results will be exploited to solve definitively the problem of positivity of the related semigroup in the $L^2$ setting. The obtained results are supported by some examples on Lipschitz domains. Among other results, we shall demonstrate that regularity of the boun…
This article offers a study of the Calderón type inverse problem of determining up to second order coefficients of the higher order elliptic operator. Here we show that it is possible to determine an anisotropic second order perturbation given by a symmetric matrix, along with a first order perturbation given by a vector field and a zero-th order potential function inside a bounded domain by measuring the Dirichlet to Neumann map of the perturbed biharmonic operator on the boundary of that domain.
We consider the problem of describing the traces of functions in $H^2(Ω)$ on the boundary of a Lipschitz domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. We provide a definition of those spaces, in particular of $H^{\frac{3}{2}}(\partialΩ)$, by means of Fourier series associated with the eigenfunctions of new multi-parameter biharmonic Steklov problems which we introduce with this specific purpose. These definitions coincide with the classical ones when the domain is smooth. Our spaces allow to represent in series the solutions to the biharmonic Dirichlet problem. Moreover, a few spectral properties of…
Polar differentiation matrices for the Laplace equation in the disk subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions and the biharmonic equation subjected to nonhomogeneous Dirichlet conditions
This paper deals with the initial-boundary value problem of the biharmonic cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in a quarter plane with inhomogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data. We prove local well-posedness in the low regularity Sobolev spaces introducing Duhamel boundary forcing operator associated to the linear equation to construct solutions on the whole line. With this in hands, the energy and nonlinear estimates allow us to apply Fourier restriction method, introduced by J. Bourgain, to get the main result of the article. Additionally, adaptations of this approach for the biharmonic…
We study the local and global wellposedness of the initial-boundary value problem for the biharmonic Schrödinger equation on the half-line with inhomogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data. First, we obtain a representation formula for the solution of the linear nonhomogenenous problem by using the Fokas method (also known as the \emph{unified transform method}). We use this representation formula to prove space and time estimates on the solutions of the linear model in fractional Sobolev spaces by using Fourier analysis. Secondly, we consider the nonlinear model with a power type nonlinearit…
We introduce the biharmonic Steklov problem on differential forms by considering suitable boundary conditions. We characterize its smallest eigenvalue and prove elementary properties of the spectrum. We obtain various estimates for the first eigenvalue, some of which involve eigenvalues of other problems such as the Dirichlet, Neumann, Robin and Steklov ones. Independently, new inequalities relating the eigenvalues of the latter problems are proved.
In this paper we consider the initial boundary value problem (IBVP) for the nonlinear biharmonic Schrödinger equation posed on a bounded interval $(0,L)$ with non-homogeneous Navier or Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. For Navier boundary IBVP, we set up its local well-posedness if the initial data lies in $H^s(0, L)$ with $s\geq 0$ and $s\neq n+1/2, n\in \mathbb{N}$, and the boundary data are selected from the appropriate spaces with optimal regularities, i.e., the $j$-th order data are chosen in $H_{loc}^{(s+3-j)/4}(\mathbb {R}^+)$, for $j=0,2$. For Dirichlet boundary IBVP the cor…
This paper deals with the stabilization of the linear Biharmonic Schrödinger equation in an $n$-dimensional open bounded domain under Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions considering three infinite memory terms as damping mechanisms. We show that depending on the smoothness of initial data and the arbitrary growth at infinity of the kernel function, this class of solution goes to zero with a polynomial decay rate like $t^{-n}$ depending on assumptions about the kernel function associated with the infinite memory terms.

We study the spectral stability of two fourth order Steklov problems upon domain perturbation. One of the two problems is the classical DBS - Dirichlet Biharmonic Steklov - problem, the other one is a variant. Under a comparatively weak condition on the convergence of the domains, we prove the stability of the resolvent operators for both problems, which implies the stability of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The stability estimates for the eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the strong $H^2$-norms. The analysis is carried out without assuming that the domains are star-shaped. Our condit…
We prove the (optimal) $W^{1,\infty}$-regularity of weak solutions to the equation $-Δu = Q \; \mathcal{H}^{n-1} \llcorner Γ$ in a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $Γ\subset \subset Ω$ is a compact (Lipschitz) manifold and $Q \in L^\infty(Γ)$. We also discuss optimality and necessity of the assumptions on $Q$ and $Γ$. Our findings can be applied to study the regularity of solutions for several free boundary problems, in particular the biharmonic Alt-Caffarelli Problem.
In this paper we present a preliminary study on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator with respect to a second order elliptic operator with measurable coefficients, including first order terms, namely, the operator on $L^2(\partialΩ)$ given by $φ\mapsto \partial_νu$ where $u$ is a weak solution of \begin{equation} \left\{ \begin{aligned} -{\rm div}\, (a\nabla u) +b\cdot \nabla u -{\rm div}\, (cu)+du & =λu \ \ \text{on}\ Ω,\\ u|_{\partialΩ} & =φ. \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} Under suitable assumptions on the matrix-valued function $a$, on the vector fields $b$ and $c$, and on the function $…
In this paper we deal with the composite plate problem, namely the following optimization eigenvalue problem $$ \inf_{ρ\in \mathrm{P}} \inf_{u \in \mathcal{W}\setminus\{0\}} \frac{\int_Ω(Δu)^2}{\int_Ω ρu^2}, $$ where $\mathrm{P}$ is a class of admissible densities, $\mathcal{W}= H^{2}_{0}(Ω)$ for Dirichlet boundary conditions and $\mathcal W= H^2(Ω) \cap H^1_{0}(Ω)$ for Navier boundary conditions. The associated Euler-Lagrange equation is a fourth-order elliptic PDE governed by the biharmonic operator $Δ^2$. In the spirit of [10], we study qualitative properties of the optimal pairs $(u,ρ)$. I…
We consider elliptic operators with measurable coefficients and Robin boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and show that the first eigenfunction $v$ satisfies $v(x) \ge δ> 0$ for all $x \in \overlineΩ$, even if the boundary $\partial Ω$ is only Lipschitz continuous. Under such weak regularity assumptions the Hopf-Ole\uınik boundary lemma is not available; instead we use a new approach based on an abstract positivity improving condition for semigroups that map $L_p(Ω)$ into $C(\overlineΩ)$. The same tool also yields corresponding results for Dirichlet or mixed boundar…
