Moeller's energy-momentum complex is employed in order to determine the energy and momentum distributions for a spacetime described by a "generalized Schwarzschild" geometry in (3+1)-dimensions on a noncommutative curved D3-brane in an effective, open bosonic string theory. The geometry considered is obtained by an effective theory of gravity coupled with a nonlinear electromagnetic field and depends only on the generalized (effective) mass and charge which incorporate corrections of first order in the noncommutativity parameter.
We present a formulation in a curved background of noncommutative mechanics, where the object of noncommutativity $θ^{μν}$ is considered as an independent quantity having a canonical conjugate momentum. We introduced a noncommutative first-order action in D=10 curved spacetime and the covariant equations of motions were computed. This model, invariant under diffeomorphism, generalizes recent relativistic results.
We analyse the spinor action on a curved noncommutative space, the so-called truncated Heisenberg algebra, and in particular, the nonminimal coupling of spinors to the torsion. We find that dimensional reduction of the Dirac action gives the noncommutative extension of the Gross-Neveu model, the model which is, as shown by Vignes-Tourneret, fully renormalisable.
We study classical scalar field theories on noncommutative curved spacetimes. Following the approach of Wess et al. [Classical Quantum Gravity 22 (2005), 3511 and Classical Quantum Gravity 23 (2006), 1883], we describe noncommutative spacetimes by using (Abelian) Drinfel'd twists and the associated *-products and *-differential geometry. In particular, we allow for position dependent noncommutativity and do not restrict ourselves to the Moyal-Weyl deformation. We construct action functionals for real scalar fields on noncommutative curved spacetimes, and derive the corresponding deformed wave …
We study the notion of a Dirac operator in the framework of twist-deformed noncommutative geometry. We provide a number of well-motivated candidate constructions and propose a minimal set of axioms that a noncommutative Dirac operator should satisfy. These criteria turn out to be restrictive, but they do not fix a unique construction: two of our operators generally satisfy the axioms, and we provide an explicit example where they are inequivalent. For highly symmetric spacetimes with Drinfeld twists constructed from sufficiently many Killing vector fields, all of our operators coincide. For ge…
The focus of this PhD thesis is on applications, new developments and extensions of the noncommutative gravity theory proposed by Julius Wess and his group. In part one we propose an extension of the usual symmetry reduction procedure to noncommutative gravity. We classify in the case of abelian Drinfel'd twists all consistent deformations of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies and of the Schwarzschild black hole. The deformed symmetry structure allows us to obtain exact solutions of the noncommutative Einstein equations in many of our models. In part two we develop a new for…
We consider simple extensions of noncommutativity from flat to curved spacetime. One possibility is to have a generalization of the Moyal product with a covariantly constant noncommutative tensor $θ^{μν}$. In this case the spacetime symmetry is restricted to volume preserving diffeomorphisms which also preserve $θ^{μν}$. Another possibility is an extension of the Kontsevich product to curved spacetime. In both cases the noncommutative product is nonassociative. We find the the order $θ^2$ noncommutative correction to the Newtonian potential in the case of a covariantly constant $θ^{μν}$. It is…
In this article we study the quantization of a free real scalar field on a class of noncommutative manifolds, obtained via formal deformation quantization using triangular Drinfel'd twists. We construct deformed quadratic action functionals and compute the corresponding equation of motion operators. The Green's operators and the fundamental solution of the deformed equation of motion are obtained in terms of formal power series. It is shown that, using the deformed fundamental solution, we can define deformed *-algebras of field observables, which in general depend on the spacetime deformation…
We summarize our recently proposed approach to quantum field theory on noncommutative curved spacetimes. We make use of the Drinfel'd twist deformed differential geometry of Julius Wess and his group in order to define an action functional for a real scalar field on a twist-deformed time-oriented, connected and globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold. The corresponding deformed wave operator admits unique deformed retarded and advanced Green's operators, provided we pose a support condition on the deformation. The solution space of the deformed wave equation is constructed explicitly and can b…
We investigate a relation of the contravariant geometry to the emergent gravity from noncommutative gauge theories. We give a refined formulation of the contravariant gravity and provide solutions to the contravariant Einstein equation. We linearize the equation around background solutions, including curved ones. A noncommutative gauge theory on the Moyal plane can be rewritten as an ordinary gauge theory on a curved background via the Seiberg-Witten map, which is known as the emergent gravity. We show that this phenomenon also occurs for a gauge theory on a noncommutative homogeneous Kähler b…
We study noncommutative deformations of the wave equation in curved backgrounds and discuss the modification of the dispersion relations due to noncommutativity combined with curvature of spacetime. Our noncommutative differential geometry approach is based on Drinfeld twist deformation, and can be implemented for any twist and any curved background. We discuss in detail the Jordanian twist $-$giving $κ$-Minkowski spacetime in flat space$-$ in the presence of a Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological background. We obtain a new expression for the variation of the speed of light,…
We investigate a curved brane-world, inspired by a noncommutative D3-brane, in a type IIB string theory. We obtain, an axially symmetric and a spherically symmetric, (anti) de Sitter black holes in 4D. The event horizons of these black holes possess a constant curvature and may be seen to be governed by different topologies. The extremal geometries are explored, using the noncommutative scaling in the theory, to reassure the attractor behavior at the black hole event horizon. The emerging two dimensional, semi-classical, black hole is analyzed to provide evidence for the extra dimensions in a …
The propagator is calculated on a noncommutative version of the flat plane and the Lobachevsky plane with and without an extra (euclidean) time parameter. In agreement with the general idea of noncommutative geometry it is found that the limit when the two `points' coincide is finite and diverges only when the geometry becomes commutative. The flat 4-dimensional case is also considered. This is at the moment less interesting since there has been no curved case developed with which it can be compared.
We review some aspects of the implementation of spacetime symmetries in noncommutative field theories, emphasizing their origin in string theory and how they may be used to construct theories of gravitation. The geometry of canonical noncommutative gauge transformations is analysed in detail and it is shown how noncommutative Yang-Mills theory can be related to a gravity theory. The construction of twisted spacetime symmetries and their role in constructing a noncommutative extension of general relativity is described. We also analyse certain generic features of noncommutative gauge theories o…
We obtain dS and AdS generalized Reissner-Nordstrom like black hole geometries in a curved D3-brane frame-work, underlying a noncommutative gauge theory on the brane-world. The noncommutative scaling limit is explored to investigate a possible tunneling of an AdS vacuum in string theory to dS vacuum in its low energy gravity theory. The Hagedorn transition is invoked into its self-dual gauge theory to decouple the gauge nonlinearity from the dS geometry, which in turn is shown to describe a pure dS vacuum.
We characterize the worldvolume theories on symmetric D-branes in a six-dimensional Cahen-Wallach pp-wave supported by a constant Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux. We find a class of flat noncommutative euclidean D3-branes analogous to branes in a constant magnetic field, as well as curved noncommutative lorentzian D3-branes analogous to branes in an electric background. In the former case the noncommutative field theory on the branes is constructed from first principles, related to dynamics of fuzzy spheres in the worldvolumes, and used to analyse the flat space limits of the string theory. The …
We discuss the generalization of Doubly Special Relativity to a curved de Sitter background. The model has three observer-independent scales, the velocity of light $c$, the radius of curvature of the geometry $α$, and the Planck energy $κ$, and can be realized in a noncommutative position space. It is possible to construct a model exhibiting a duality for the interchange of positions and momenta together with the exchange of $α$ and $κ$.
Based on the mathematics of noncommutative geometry, we model a 'classical' Dirac fermion propagating in a curved spacetime. We demonstrate that the inherent causal structure of the model encodes the possibility of Zitterbewegung - the 'trembling motion' of the fermion. We recover the well-known frequency of Zitterbewegung as the highest possible speed of change in the fermion's 'internal space'. Furthermore, we show that the latter does not change in the presence of an external electromagnetic field and derive its explicit analogue when the mass parameter is promoted to a Higgs-like field. We…
We obtain a generalized Schwarzschild (GS-) and a generalized Reissner-Nordstrom (GRN-) black hole geometries in (3+1)-dimensions, in a noncommutative string theory. In particular, we consider an effective theory of gravity on a curved $D_3$-brane in presence of an electromagnetic (EM-) field. Two different length scales, inherent in its noncommutative counter-part, are exploited to obtain a theory of effective gravity coupled to an U(1) noncommutative gauge theory to all orders in $Θ$. It is shown that the GRN-black hole geometry, in the Planckian regime, reduces to the GS-black hole. However…
We showed before that self-dual electromagnetism in noncommutative (NC) spacetime is equivalent to self-dual Einstein gravity. This result implies a striking picture about gravity: Gravity can emerge from electromagnetism in NC spacetime. Gravity is then a collective phenomenon emerging from gauge fields living in fuzzy spacetime. We elucidate in some detail why electromagnetism in NC spacetime should be a theory of gravity. In particular, we show that NC electromagnetism is realized through the Darboux theorem as a diffeomorphism symmetry G which is spontaneously broken to symplectomorphism H…
A long-standing topic of interest in the general theory of relativity is the embedding of curved spacetimes in higher-dimensional flat spacetimes. The main purpose this paper is to show that the embedding theory can account for the accelerated expansion of the Universe and thereby serve as a model for dark energy. This result is consistent with earlier findings based on noncommutative geometry. A secondary objective is to show that the embedding theory also implies that it is possible, at least in principle, for the accelerated expansion to reverse to become a deceleration.
We study the quantum field theory (QFT) of a free, real, massless and curvature coupled scalar field on self-similar symmetric spacetimes, which are deformed by an abelian Drinfel'd twist constructed from a Killing and a homothetic Killing vector field. In contrast to deformations solely by Killing vector fields, such as the Moyal-Weyl Minkowski spacetime, the equation of motion and Green's operators are deformed. We show that there is a *-algebra isomorphism between the QFT on the deformed and the formal power series extension of the QFT on the undeformed spacetime. We study the convergent im…
We argue that the natural framework for embedding the ideas of deformed, or doubly, special relativity (DSR) into a curved spacetime is a generalisation of Einstein-Cartan theory, considered by Stelle and West. Instead of interpreting the noncommuting "spacetime coordinates" of the Snyder algebra as endowing spacetime with a fundamentally noncommutative structure, we are led to consider a connection with torsion in this framework. This may lead to the usual ambiguities in minimal coupling. We note that observable violations of charge conservation induced by torsion should happen on a time scal…
A general framework of non-perturbative quantum field theory on a curved background is presented. A quantum field theory is in this setting characterised by an embedding of a space of field configurations into a Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. This embedding, which is only local up to a scale that we interpret as the Planck scale, coincides in the local and flat limit with the plane wave expansion known from canonical quantisation. We identify a universal Bott-Dirac operator acting in the Hilbert space over $\mathbb{R}^\infty$ and show that it gives rise to the free Hamiltonian both in…
Several arguments suggest that the Planck scale could be the characteristic scale of curvature of momentum space. As other recent studies we assume that the metric of momentum space determines the condition of on-shellness while the momentum-space affine connection governs the form of the law of composition of momenta. We show that the possible choices of laws of composition of momenta are more numerous than the possible choices of affine connection on a momentum space. This motivates us to propose a new prescription for associating an affine connection to momentum composition, which we compar…
Over the last decade there were significant advances in the understanding of quantum gravity coupled to point particles in 3D (2+1-dimensional) spacetime. Most notably it is emerging that the theory can be effectively described as a theory of free particles on a momentum space with anti-deSitter geometry and with noncommutative spacetime coordinates of the type $[x^μ,x^ν]=i \hbar \ell \varepsilon^{μν}_{\phantom{μν}ρ} x^ρ$. We here show that the recently proposed relative-locality curved-momentum-space framework is ideally suited for accommodating these structures characteristic of 3D quantum g…
We show that the Lorentzian Snyder models, together with their Galilei and Carroll limiting cases, can be rigorously constructed through the projective geometry description of Lorentzian, Galilean and Carrollian spaces with nonvanishing constant curvature. The projective coordinates of such curved spaces take the role of momenta, while translation generators over the same spaces are identified with noncommutative spacetime coordinates. In this way, one obtains a deformed phase space algebra, which fully characterizes the Snyder model and is invariant under boosts and rotations of the relevant …
We apply a recent formalism of quantum geodesics to the well-known bicrossproduct model $λ$-Minkowski quantum spacetime $[x^i,t]=\imathλ_p x^i$ with its flat quantum metric as a model of quantum gravity effects, with $λ_p$ the Planck scale. As examples, quantum geodesic flow of a plane wave gets an order $λ_p$ frequency dependent correction to the classical geodesic velocity. A quantum geodesic flow with classical velocity $v$ of a Gaussian with width $\sqrt{2β}$ initially centred at the origin changes its shape but its centre of mass moves with ${<x>\over<t>}=v(1+{λ_p^2\over 2β}+O(λ^3_p))$, a…
