The aim of this work is to develop a systematic manner to close overdetermined systems arising from conformal Killing tensors (CKT). The research performs this action for 1-tensor and 2-tensors. This research makes it possible to develop a new general method for any rank of CKT. This method can also be applied to other types of Killing equations, as well as to overdetermined systems constrained by some other conditions.
The major methodological apparatus of the research is a decomposition of the section bundles where the covariant derivatives of the CKT land via generalized gradients. This decomposition generates a tree in which each row represents a higher derivative. After using the conformal Killing equation, just a few components (branches) survive, which means that most of them can be expressed in terms of lower order terms. This results in a finite number of independent jets. Thus, any higher covariant derivative can be written in terms of these jets.
The findings of this work are significant methodologically and, more specifically, in the potential for the discovery of symmetries. First, this work has uncovered a new method that could be used to close overdetermined systems arising from conformal Killing tensors (CKT). Second, through an application of this method, this research finds higher symmetry operators of first and second degree, which are known by other means, for the Laplace operator. The findings also reveal the first order symmetry operators for the Yamabe case. Moreover, the research leads to conjectures about the second order symmetries of the Yamabe operator.
We determine the space of commuting symmetries of the Laplace operator on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of constant curvature, and derive its algebra structure. Our construction is based on the Riemannian tractor calculus, allowing to construct a prolongation of the differential system for symmetric Killing tensors. We also discuss some aspects of its relation to projective differential geometry.
We compute symmetry algebras of a system of two equations y^(k)=z^(l)=0, where 2<=k<l. It appears that there are many ways to convert such system of ODEs to an exterior differential system. They lead to different series of finite-dimensional symmetry algebras. For example, for (k,l)=(2,3) we get two non-isomorphic symmetry algebras of the same dimension. We explore how these symmetry algebras are related to both Sternberg prolongation of G-structures and Tanaka prolongation of graded nilpotent Lie algebras. Surprisingly, the case (k,l)=(2,3) provides an example of a linear subalgebra g in gl(5…
The prolongation structure of a two-by-two problem is formulated very generally in terms of exterior differential forms on a standard representation of Pauli matrices. The differential system is general without making reference to any specific equation. An integrability condition is provided which gives by construction the equation to be investigated and whose components involve the structure constants of an SU(2) Lie algebra. Along side this, a related, different kind of prolongation, a type of Wahlquist-Estabrook prolongation, over a closed differential ideal is discussed and some applicatio…
In these expository notes we draw together and develop the ideas behind some recent progress in two directions: the treatment of finite type partial differential operators by prolongation, and a class of differential complexes known as detour complexes. This elaborates on a lecture given at the IMA Summer Programme ``Symmetries and overdetermined systems of partial differential equations''.
The aim of this article is to show that systems of linear partial differential equations on filtered manifolds, which are of weighted finite type, can be canonically rewritten as first order systems of a certain type. This leads immediately to obstructions to the existence of solutions. Moreover, we will deduce that the solution space of such equations is always finite dimensional.
The Killing tensor equation is a first order differential equation on symmetric covariant tensors that generalises to higher rank the usual Killing vector equation on Riemannian manifolds. We view this more generally as an equation on any manifold equipped with an affine connection, and in this setting derive its prolongation to a linear connection. This connection has the property that parallel sections are in 1-1 correspondence with solutions of the Killing equation. Moreover this connection is projectively invariant and is derived entirely using the projectively invariant tractor calculus w…
Motivated by the geometric theory of differential equations and the variational approach to the equivalence problem for geometric structures on manifolds, we consider the problem of equivalence for distributions with fixed submanifolds of flags on each fiber. We call them flag structures. The construction of the canonical frames for these structures can be given in the two prolongation steps: the first step, based on our previous works, gives the canonical bundle of moving frames for the fixed submanifolds of flags on each fiber and the second step consists of the prolongation of the bundle ob…
Based on the ideas of Optimal Control, we introduce the new basic characteristic of a bracket generating distribution, the Jacobi symbol. In contrast to the classical Tanaka symbol, the set of Jacobi symbols is discrete and classifiable. We give an explicit and unified algebraic procedure for the construction of the canonical frames (the structure of absolute parallelism) for all distribution with given Jacobi symbol. We describe all Jacobi symbols for which this procedure ends up in a finite number of steps (i.e. all Jacobi symbols of finite type) and distinguish the symplectically flat distr…
We show that a wide class of geometrically defined overdetermined semilinear partial differential equations may be explicitly prolonged to obtain closed systems. As a consequence, in the case of linear equations we extract sharp bounds on the dimension of the solution space.
BGG-operators form sequences of invariant differential operators and the first of these is overdetermined. Interesting equations in conformal geometry described by these operators are those for Einstein scales, conformal Killing forms and conformal Killing tensors. We present a deformation procedure of the tractor connection which yields an invariant prolongation of the first operator. The explicit calculation is presented in the case of conformal Killing forms.
This is the second in a series of papers on natural modification of the normal tractor connection in a parabolic geometry, which naturally prolongs an underlying overdetermined system of invariant differential equations. We give a short review of the general procedure developed in [5] and then compute the prolongation covariant derivatives for a number of interesting examples in projective, conformal and Grassmannian geometries.
A general theory of rigid completely integrable analytic partial differential equations is endeavoured. The tube over the light cone in C^3 is shown to be the unique model (up to biholomorphisms) having CR automorphism group of maximal dimension equal to 10. Explicit formulas for the Lie prolongation of vector fields to jets spaces are derived.
On contact manifolds we describe a notion of (contact) finite-type for linear partial differential operators satisfying a natural condition on their leading terms. A large class of linear differential operators are of finite-type in this sense, and for any such operator we construct a partial connection on a (finite rank) vector bundle with the property that sections in the null space of the operator correspond bijectively, and via an explicit map, with sections parallel for the partial connection. It follows that the solution space is finite dimensional and bounded by the corank of the holono…
We construct a conformally invariant vector bundle connection such that its equation of parallel transport is a first order system that gives a prolongation of the conformal Killing equation on differential forms. Parallel sections of this connection are related bijectively to solutions of the conformal Killing equation. We construct other conformally invariant connections, also giving prolongations of the conformal Killing equation, that bijectively relate solutions of the conformal Killing equation on $k$-forms to a twisting of the conformal Killing equation on (k - l)-forms for various inte…
The article provides a modest survey of the absolute theory of general systems of (partial) differential equations. The equations are relieved of all additional structures and subject to quite arbitrary change of the variables. An abstract mathematical theory in the Bourbaki sense with its own concepts and technical tools follows. In particular the external, internal, generalized and higher-order symmetries and infinitesimal symmetries together with the E. Cartan's prolongations, various characteristics, the involutivity and the controllability structures are clarified in genuinely coordinate-…
This is an expanded version of a series of two lectures given at the IMA summer program "Symmetries and Overdetermined Systems of Partial Differential Equations". The main part of the article describes the Riemannian version of the prolongation procedure for certain overdetermined system obtained recently in joint work with T.P. Branson, M.G. Eastwood, and A.R. Gover. First a simple special case is discussed, then the (Riemannian) procedure is described in general. The prolongation procedure was derived from a simplification of the construction of Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand (BGG) sequences of i…
A regular normal parabolic geometry of type $G/P$ on a manifold $M$ gives rise to sequences $D_i$ of invariant differential operators, known as the curved version of the BGG resolution. These sequences are constructed from the normal covariant derivative $\na^\om$ on the corresponding tractor bundle $V,$ where $\om$ is the normal Cartan connection. The first operator $D_0$ in the sequence is overdetermined and it is well known that $\na^\om$ yields the prolongation of this operator in the homogeneous case $M = G/P$. Our first main result is the curved version of such a prolongation. This requi…
In this paper we analyze the tangential symmetries of Darboux integrable decomposable exterior differential systems. The decomposable systems generalize the notion of a hyperbolic exterior differential system and include the classic notion of Darboux integrability for first order systems and second order scalar equations. For Darboux integrable systems the general solution can be found by integration (solving ordinary differential equations). We show that this property holds for our generalized systems as well. We give a geometric construction of the Lie algebras of tangential symmetries assoc…
The Killing operator on a Riemannian manifold is a linear differential operator on vector fields whose kernel provides the infinitesimal Riemannian symmetries. The Killing operator is best understood in terms of its prolongation, which entails some simple tensor identities. These simple identities can be viewed as arising from the identification of certain Lie algebra cohomologies. The point is that this case provides a model for more complicated operators similarly concerned with symmetry.
The geometrical theory of partial differential equations in the absolute sense, without any additional structures, is developed. In particular the symmetries need not preserve the hierarchy of independent and dependent variables. The order of derivatives can be changed and the article is devoted to the higher--order infinitesimal symmetries which provide a simplifying "linear aproximation" of general groups of higher--order symmetries. The classical Lie's approach is appropriately adapted.
In this paper we investigate the relations between semispray, nonlinear connection, dynamical covariant derivative and Jacobi endomorphism on Lie algebroids. Using these geometric structures, we study the symmetries of second order differential equations in the general framework of Lie algebroids.
We prove that under certain assumptions a partial differential equation can be derived from a variational principle. It is well-known from Noether's theorem that symmetries of a variational functional lead to conservation laws of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation. We reverse this statement and prove that a differential equation which satisfies sufficiently many symmetries and corresponding conservation laws leads to a variational functional whose Euler-Lagrange equation is the given differential equation.
The purpose of this article is to motivate the study of invariant, and especially conformally invariant, differential pairings. Since a general theory is lacking, this work merely presents some interesting examples of these pairings, explains how they naturally arise, and formulates various associated problems.
The geometry of an admissible Bäcklund transformation for an exterior differential system is described by an admissible Cartan connection for a geometric structure on a tower with infinite--dimensional skeleton which is the universal prolongation of a $|1|$--graded semi-simple Lie algebra.
For For a given PDE system, or an exterior differential system possessing a Lie group of internal symmetries the orbit reduction procedure is introduced. It is proved that the solutions of the reduced exterior differential system are in one-to-one correspondence with the moduli space of regular solutions of the prolongation of the original system. The isomorphism between the local characteristic cohomology of the reduced unconstrained jet space and the Lie algebra cohomology of the symmetry group is established. The group-invariant Euler-Lagrange equations of an invariant variational problem a…
We establish a link between the study of completely integrable systems of partial differential equations and the study of generic submanifolds in C^n. Using the recent developments of Cauchy-Riemann geometry we provide the set of symmetries of such a system with a Lie group structure. Finally we determine the precise upper bound of the dimension of this Lie group for some specific systems of partial differential equations.
We study the interplay between the differential Galois group and the Lie algebra of infinitesimal symmetries of systems of linear differential equations. We show that some symmetries can be seen as solutions of a hierarchy of linear differential systems. We show that the existence of rational symmetries constrains the differential Galois group in the system in a way that depends of the Maclaurin series of the symmetry along the zero solution.
The aim of this paper is to study symmetries of linearly singular differential equations, namely, equations that can not be written in normal form because the derivatives are multiplied by a singular linear operator. The concept of geometric symmetry of a linearly singular differential equation is introduced as a transformation that preserves the geometric data that define the problem. It is proved that such symmetries are essentially equivalent to dynamic symmetries, that is, transformations mapping solutions into solutions. Similar results are given for infinitesimal symmetries. To study the…
The Koutras-McIntosh family of metrics include conformally flat pp-waves and the Wils metric. It appeared in a paper of 1996 by Koutras-McIntosh as an example of a pure radiation spacetime without scalar curvature invariants or infinitesimal symmetries. Here we demonstrate that these metrics have no "hidden symmetries", by which we mean Killing tensors of low degrees. For the particular case of Wils metrics we show the nonexistence of Killing tensors up to degree 6. The technique we use is the geometric theory of overdetermined PDEs and the Cartan prolongation-projection method. Application of…
Symmetries of variational problems are considered as symmetries of vector bundle valued exterior differential systems. This approach is then applied to third order ordinary variational equations of motion of the semi-classical spinning particle.
For the class of systems of PDEs, for which infinitesimal translations (with respect to some (in)dependent variables) possess specific finite-dimensional invariant subspaces of the space of generalized symmetries of the system considered. We establish when there exist generalized symmetries from these subspaces, which depend from the above-mentioned variables.
We formulate a method of computing invariant 1-forms and structure equations of symmetry pseudo-groups of differential equations based on Cartan's method of equivalence and the moving coframe method introduced by Fels and Olver. Our apparoach does not require a preliminary computation of infinitesimal defining systems, their analysis and integration, and uses differentiation and linear algebra operations only. Examples of its applications are given.
Using the adjoint action of the infinitesimal translations (with respect to some (in)dependant variables) on specific finite-dimensional subspaces of the space of generalized symmetries of some system of partial differential equations, we explicitly determine the dependance of coefficients of generalized symmetries from these subspaces on the above-mentioned variables. We establish the connection of our results with the theory of quasiexactly solvable models. Some generalizations of the approach proposed also are discussed.
Secondary Calculus is a formal replacement for differential calculus on the space of solutions of a system of possibly non-linear partial differential equations and it is essentially due to Alexandre M. Vinogradov and his collaborators. Many coordinate free properties of PDEs find their natural place in Secondary Calculus including: symmetries and conservation laws, variational principles and the coordinate free aspects of the calculus of variations, recursion operators and Hamiltonian structures, etc. The building blocks of this language are horizontal cohomologies of diffieties, i.e. infinit…
