Based on the ideas of Optimal Control, we introduce the new basic characteristic of a bracket generating distribution, the Jacobi symbol. In contrast to the classical Tanaka symbol, the set of Jacobi symbols is discrete and classifiable. We give an explicit and unified algebraic procedure for the construction of the canonical frames (the structure of absolute parallelism) for all distribution with given Jacobi symbol. We describe all Jacobi symbols for which this procedure ends up in a finite number of steps (i.e. all Jacobi symbols of finite type) and distinguish the symplectically flat distributions with given Jacobi symbol, which in the case of finite type are the maximally symmetric distribution among all distribution with given Jacobi symbol. Also, for the most of Jacobi symbols we relate the prolongation procedure and the resulting prolongation algebra, which is the algebra of infinitesimal symmetries of the corresponding symplectically flat distribution, to the standard (in the sense of Kobayashi and Sternberg) prolongation of certain subspace in the algebra of infinitesimal symmetries of the flat (unparametrized) curve of flags associated with the Jacobi symbol. Finally, we give an upper bounds for the size of the resulting prolongation algebra in terms of certain spaces of polynomials vanishing on certain projective varieties. For some class of Jacobi symbols we are able to identify the resulting prolongation algebra with such spaces of polynomials. In this way we get the description of the prolongation algebra for all Jacobi symbols of finite type appearing in rank 2 and rank 3 distributions and also for most of such Jacobi symbols appearing in rank 4 distributions. In particular, in the case of rank 3 distributions this description is given in terms of the tangential developable and the secant varieties of a rational normal curve.
We determine the Christoffel's symbols for the Siegel-Jacobi ball endowed with the balanced metric. We study the equations of geodesics on the Siegel-Jacobi ball. We calculate the covariant derivative of one-forms in the variables in which is expressed the balanced metric on the Siegel-Jacobi ball.
In our previous paper (Axiomatic Differential Geometry II-3) we have discussed the general Jacobi identity, from which the Jacobi identity of vector fields follows readily. In this paper we derive Jacobi-like identities of tangent-vector-valued forms from the general Jacobi identity.
We express invariants of Finsler manifolds in a geometrical way by means of using moving planes and their associated Jacobi curves, which are curves in a fixed homogeneous Grassmann manifold. Some applications are given.
Just as the Jacobi identity of vector fields is a natural consequence of the general Jacobi identity of microcubes in synthetic differential geometry, it is to be shown in this paper that the graded Jacobi identity of the Frolicher-Nijenhuis bracket is also a natural consequence of the general Jacobi identity.
As the fourth paper of our series of papers concerned with axiomatic differential geometry, this paper is devoted to the general Jacobi identity supporting the Jacobi identity of vector fields. The general Jacobi identity can be regarded as one of the few fundamental results belonging properly to smootheology.
It is established that the existence of non-isotropic vector field which Jacobi operator of maximal rank is an obstacle for the existence of non-trivial second-order symmetric parallel tensor field. In turns out that presence of such obstacle follows that manifold as pseudo-Riemannian manifold is locally non-reducible. In particular result can be applied directly to known classes of almost (para-) contact metric manifolds when considered Jacobi operator of characteristic vector field has maximal rank. There is effective algorithmic procedure which resolves the problem of existence of such vect…
The Siegel-Jacobi space is a non-symmetric homogeneous space which is very important geometrically and arithmetically. In this paper, we discuss the theory of the geometry and the arithmetic of the Siegel-Jacobi space.
We study the holomorphic unitary representations of the Jacobi group based on Siegel-Jacobi domains. Explicit polynomial orthonormal bases of the Fock spaces based on the Siegel-Jacobi disk are obtained. The scalar holomorphic discrete series of the Jacobi group for the Siegel-Jacobi disk is constructed and polynomial orthonormal bases of the representation spaces are given.
Cosymplectic geometry has been proven to be a very useful geometric background to describe time-dependent Hamiltonian dynamics. In this work, we address the globalization problem of locally cosymplectic Hamiltonian dynamics that failed to be globally defined. We investigate both the geometry of locally conformally cosymplectic (abbreviated as LCC) manifolds and the Hamiltonian dynamics constructed on such LCC manifolds. Further, we provide a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory on this geometric framework.
The real Jacobi group $G^J_1(\mathbb{R})={\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})\ltimes {\rm H}_1$, where ${\rm H}_1$ denotes the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group, is parametrized by the $S$-coordinates $(x,y,θ,p,q,κ)$. We show that the parameter $η$ that appears passing from Perelomov's un-normalized coherent state vector based on the Siegel--Jacobi disk $\mathcal{D}^J_1$ to the normalized one is $η=q+\rm{i} p$. The two-parameter invariant metric on the Siegel--Jacobi upper half-plane $\mathcal{X}^J_1=\frac{G^J_1(\R)}{\rm{SO}(2)\times\mathbb{R}}$ is expressed in the variables $(x,y,\rm{Re}~η,\rm{Im}~η)$. It is …
We define certain extensions of Jacobi groups of $A_n$, prove an analogue of Chevalley Theorem for their invariants, and construct a Dubrovin Frobenius structure on it orbit space.
Adopting the omni-Lie algebroid approach to Dirac-Jacobi structures, we propose and investigate a notion of weak dual pairs in Dirac-Jacobi geometry. Their main motivating examples arise from the theory of multiplicative precontact structures on Lie groupoids. Among other properties of weak dual pairs, we prove two main results. 1) We show that the property of fitting in a weak dual pair defines an equivalence relation for Dirac-Jacobi manifolds. So, in particular, we get the existence of self-dual pairs and this immediately leads to an alternative proof of the normal form theorem around Dirac…
We study the geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are Jacobi--Tsankov, i.e. J(x)J(y)=J(y)J(x) for all tangent vectors x and y. We also study manifolds which are 2-step Jacobi nilpotent, i.e. J(x)J(y)=0 for all tangent vectors x and y.
We study contact structures on nonnegatively-graded manifolds equipped with homological contact vector fields. In the degree 1 case, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between such structures (with fixed contact form) and Jacobi manifolds. This correspondence allows us to reinterpret the Poissonization procedure, taking Jacobi manifolds to Poisson manifolds, as a supergeometric version of symplectization.
In sub-Riemannian geometry the coefficients of the Jacobi equation define curvature-like invariants. We show that these coefficients can be interpreted as the curvature of a canonical Ehresmann connection associated to the metric, first introduced in [Zelenko-Li]. We show why this connection is naturally nonlinear, and we discuss some of its properties.
We present an approach to Jacobi and contact geometry that makes many facts, presented in the literature in an overcomplicated way, much more natural and clear. The key concepts are Kirillov manifolds and linear Kirillov structures, i.e., homogeneous Poisson manifolds and, respectively, homogeneous linear Poisson manifolds. The difference with the existing literature is that the homogeneity of the Poisson structure is related to a principal ${\rm GL}(1,{\mathbb R})$-bundle structure on the manifold and not just to a vector field. This allows for working with Jacobi bundle structures on nontriv…
The coherent state representation of the Jacobi group $G^J_1$ is indexed with two parameters, $μ(=\frac{1}{\hbar})$, describing the part coming from the Heisenberg group, and $k$, characterizing the positive discrete series representation of $\text{SU}(1,1)$. The Ricci form, the scalar curvature and the geodesics of the Siegel-Jacobi disk $\mathcal{D}^J_1$ are investigated. The significance in the language of coherent states of the transform which realizes the fundamental conjecture on the Siegel-Jacobi disk is emphasized. The Berezin kernel, Calabi's diastasis, the Kobayashi embedding, and th…
We present a systematic treatment of line bundle geometry and Jacobi manifolds with an application to geometric mechanics that has not been noted in the literature. We precisely identify categories that generalise the ordinary categories of smooth manifolds and vector bundles to account for a lack of choice of a preferred unit, which in standard differential geometry is always given by the global constant function $1$. This is what we call the `unit-free' approach. After giving a characterisation of local Lie brackets via their symbol maps we apply our novel categorical language to review Jaco…
If $U:[0,+\infty[\times M$ is a uniformly continuous viscosity solution of the evolution Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$\partial_tU+ H(x,\partial_xU)=0,$$ where $M$ is a not necessarily compact manifold, and $H$ is a Tonelli Hamiltonian, we prove the set $Σ(U)$, of points where $U$ is not differentiable, is locally contractible. Moreover, we study the homotopy type of $Σ(U)$. We also give an application to the singularities of a distance function to a closed subset of a complete Riemannian manifold.
Frolicher and Nijenhuis recognized well in the middle of the previous century that the Lie bracket and its Jacobi identity could and should exist beyond Lie algebras. Nevertheless the conceptual meaning of their discovery has been obscured by the messy techniques they exploited. The principal objective in this paper is to show that the double dualization functor in a cartesian closed category as well as synthetic differential geometry provides an adequate framework, in which their discovery's conceptual meaning appears lucid.
The standard formulation of Jacobi manifolds in terms of differential operators on line bundles, although effective at capturing most of the relevant geometric features, lacks a clear algebraic interpretation similar to how Poisson algebras are understood to be the algebraic counterpart of Poisson manifolds. We propose a formalism, based on the dimensioned algebra technology recently developed by the author, to capture the algebraic counterparts of Jacobi manifolds as dimensioned Poisson algebras. Particularly, we give a generalisation of the functor $\text{C}^\infty:\textsf{Smooth}\to \textsf…
Based on ideas of W. M. Tulczyjew, a geometric framework for a frame-independent formulation of different problems in analytical mechanics is developed. In this approach affine bundles replace vector bundles of the standard description and functions are replaced by sections of certain affine line bundles called AV-bundles. Categorial constructions for affine and special affine bundles as well as natural analogs of Lie algebroid structures on affine bundles (Lie affgebroids) are investigated. One discovers certain Lie algebroids and Lie affgebroids canonically associated with an AV-bundle which…
We present a computational toolkit for (local) Poisson-Nijenhuis calculus on manifolds. Our python module $\textsf{PoissonGeometry}$ implements our algorithms, and accompanies this paper. We include two examples of how our methods can be used, one for gauge transformations of Poisson bivectors in dimension 3, and a second one that determines parametric Poisson bivector fields in dimension 4.
We propose a novel approach to contact Hamiltonian mechanics which, in contrast to the one dominating in the literature, serves also for non-trivial contact structures. In this approach Hamiltonians are no longer functions on the contact manifold M itself but sections of a line bundle over M or, equivalently, 1-homogeneous functions on a certain GL(1,R)-principal bundle P\to M which is equipped with a homogeneous symplectic form ω. In other words, our understanding of contact geometry is that it is not an `odd-dimensional cousin' of symplectic geometry but rather a part of the latter, namely `…
Let E be a natural operator associated to the curvature tensor of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. This survey article studies when the spectrum, or more generally the real Jordan normal form, of E is constant on the natural domain of definition. It deals with results for the Jacobi operator, the higher order Jacobi operator, the Szabo operator, and the skew-symmetric curvature operator. Some results in the complex setting are presented as well for the skew-symmetric curvature operator.
Jacobi algebroids (i.e. `Jacobi versions' of Lie algebroids) are studied in the context of graded Jacobi brackets on graded commutative algebras. This unifies varios concepts of graded Lie structures in geometry and physics. A method of describing such structures by classical Lie algebroids via certain gauging (in the spirit of E.Witten's gauging of exterior derivative) is developed. One constructs a corresponding Cartan differential calculus (graded commutative one) in a natural manner. This, in turn, gives canonical generating operators for triangular Jacobi algebroids. One gets, in particul…
