The work reported below is a first of its kind study of the properties of turbulent flow without strong mean shear in a Newtonian fluid in proximity of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface, with emphasis on the small scale aspects. The main tools used are a three-dimensional particle tracking system (3D-PTV) allowing to measure and follow in a Lagrangian manner the field of velocity derivatives and direct numerical simulations (DNS). The comparison of flow properties in the turbulent (A), intermediate (B) and non-turbulent (C) regions in the proximity of the interface allows for direct observation of the key physical processes underlying the entrainment phenomenon. The differences between small scale strain and enstrophy are striking and point to the definite scenario of turbulent entrainment via the viscous forces originating in strain.
A temporal complex network-based approach is proposed as a novel formulation to investigate turbulent mixing from a Lagrangian viewpoint. By exploiting a spatial proximity criterion, the dynamics of a set of fluid particles is geometrized into a time-varying weighted network. Specifically, a numerically solved turbulent channel flow is employed as an exemplifying case. We show that the time-varying network is able to clearly describe the particle swarm dynamics, in a parametrically robust and computationally inexpensive way. The network formalism enables to straightforwardly identify transient…
The heat transport and corresponding changes in the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations as a function of the aspect ratio $Γ$ of a closed cylindrical cell and the Rayleigh number $Ra$. For small and moderate aspect ratios, the global heat transfer law $Nu=A\times Ra^β$ shows a power law dependence of both fit coefficients $A$ and $β$ on the aspect ratio. A minimum Nusselt number coincides with the point where the LSC undergoes a transition from a single-roll to a double-roll pattern. With i…
Recent findings suggest that wall-bounded turbulent flow can take different statistically stationary turbulent states, with different transport properties, even for the very same values of the control parameters. What state the system takes depends on the initial conditions. Here we analyze the multiple states in large-aspect ratio ($Γ$) two-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh--Bénard flow with no-slip plates and horizontally periodic boundary conditions as model system. We determine the number $n$ of convection rolls, their mean aspect ratios $Γ_r = Γ/n$, and the corresponding transport properties…
Fundamental insight into the physics of buoyant gas dispersion from realistic flow geometries is necessary to accurately predict flow structures associated with hydrogen outflow from accidental leaks and the associated flammability envelope. Using helium as an experimental proxy, turbulent buoyant jets issuing from high-aspect-ratio slots on the side wall of a circular tube were studied experimentally applying simultaneous particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) techniques. Two slots with an aspect ratio of 10 were considered in this study. The effects of …
Turbulent flow around a swept back circular cylinder was investigated experimentally using one or two small sweeping jets emanating tangentially to the surface and orthogonal to the axis of the cylinder creating a yawing moment that overcomes the natural restoring force to the plane of symmetry. It appears from the integral force balance data that large yawing moment coefficients can be generated in this manner, and the results could be used in the orientation and attitude control of a refueling boom thus avoiding the H-shape control surfaces that are currently used on Air Force tankers. The i…
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements, in the form of the Nusselt number \Nu, by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 0.50$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 2.24$ m the height). The measurements were made using sulfur hexafluoride at pressures up to 19 bars as the fluid. They are for the Rayleigh-number range $3\times 10^{12} \alt \Ra \alt 10^{15}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 1.4\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.312 \pm 0.002…
We report measurements of properties of turbulent thermal convection of a fluid with a Prandtl number $\Pra=4.38$ in a cylindrical cell with an aspect ratio $Γ=0.50$. The rotational symmetry was broken by a small tilt of the sample axis relative to gravity. Measurements of the heat transport (as expressed by the Nusselt number \Nu), as well as of large-scale-circulation (LSC) properties by means of temperature measurements along the sidewall, are presented. In contradistinction to similar experiments using containers of aspect ratio $Γ=1.00$ \cite[]{ABN06} and $Γ=0.50$ \cite[]{CRCC04,SXX05,RGK…
Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent convection in a large aspect-ratio box are carried out in the range of Rayleigh number $7 \times 10^4 \le Ra \le 2 \times 10^6$ at Prandtl number Pr=0.71. A strong correlation between the vertical velocity and temperature is observed in the turbulent regime at almost all the length scales. Frequency spectra of all the velocities and temperature show a $-5/3$ law for a wide band of frequencies. The variances of horizontal velocities at different points in the flow yield a single power-law. Probability density functions of velocities and temperature are …
This work analyzes the turbulent velocity distribution in proximity of the wall using the finite-scale Lyapunov theory just presented in previous works. This theory is here applied to the steady boundary layer under the hypothesis of moderate pressure gradient and fully developed flow along the streamwise direction. The analysis gives an equation for the velocities correlation and identifies the parameters of the expression of the average velocity through the statistical properties of the velocity correlation functions. In particular, the von Kármán constant, theoretically calculated, is about…
We evaluate the effect of two experimental parameters on the slow dynamics of a Von-Kármán swirling flow driven by two propellers in a closed cylinder. The first parameter is the inertia mo- mentum of the propellers, and the second parameter is the aspect ratio, i.e. the distance between the propellers $H$ divided by the diameter $D$. We use a cell with a fixed diameter $D$ but where the distance between the propellers can be turned continuously and where the inertia from the pro- pellers can also be changed using different gears. No change on the dynamics is observed when the momentum of iner…
We report the observation of superstructures, i.e.\ very large-scale and long living coherent structures in highly turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection up to Rayleigh $Ra=10^9$. We perform direct numerical simulations in horizontally periodic domains with aspect ratios up to $Γ=128$. In the considered $Ra$ number regime the thermal superstructures have a horizontal extend of six to seven times the height of the domain and their size is independent of $Ra$. Many laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have focused on small aspect ratio cells in order to achieve the highest possible $Ra…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a closed cylindrical cell is studied in the Lagrangian frame of reference with the help of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The aspect ratio of the cell Gamma is varied between 1 and 12, and the Rayleigh number Ra between 10^7 and 10^9. The Prandtl number Pr is fixed at 0.7. It is found that both the pair dispersion of the Lagrangian tracer particles and the statistics of the acceleration components measured along the particle trajectories depend on the aspect ratio for a fixed Rayleigh number for the parameter range covered in our studies…
The aspect ratio (Γ) dependence of the heat transfer (Nusselt number Nu in dimensionless form) in turbulent (two-dimensional) Rayleigh-Bénard convection is numerically studied in the regime $0.4 \le Γ\le 1.25$ for Rayleigh numbers $10^7 \le Ra \le Ra^{9}$ and Prandtl numbers Pr =0.7 (gas) and 4.3 (water). Nu (Γ) shows a very rich structure with sudden jumps and sharp transitions. We connect these structures to the way the flow organizes itself in the sample and explain why the aspect ratio dependence of Nu is more pronounced for small Pr. Even for fixed Γdifferent turbulent states (with differ…
In this paper, phenomenological developments are used to explore several aspects of the relative particle dispersion (RPD) in different physical fully-developed turbulence (FDT) situations. The role played by the FDT cascade physics underlying this process is investigated. Many of these aspects are motivated by previous laboratory experiment and numerical simulation results. These are, * spatial intermittency effects exhibiting, * [(a)] reduction of RPD in 3D FDT, corroborating the numerical simulation results (Boffetta and Sokolov [11]); *[(b)] prevalence of power-law scaling of RPD in 2D FDT…
We report high-precision measurements of the Nusselt number $Nu$ as a function of the Rayleigh number $Ra$ in water-filled rectangular Rayleigh-Bénard convection cells. The horizontal length $L$ and width $W$ of the cells are 50.0 cm and 15.0 cm, respectively, and the heights $H=49.9$, 25.0, 12.5, 6.9, 3.5, and 2.4 cm, corresponding to the aspect ratios $(Γ_x\equiv L/H,Γ_y\equiv W/H)=(1,0.3)$, $(2,0.6)$, $(4,1.2)$, $(7.3,2.2)$, $(14.3,4.3)$, and $(20.8,6.3)$. The measurements were carried out over the Rayleigh number range $6\times10^5\lesssim Ra\lesssim10^{11}$ and the Prandtl number range $5…
The dynamics of dilute micron-sized spherical inertial particles in turbulent duct flows is studied by means of direct numerical simulations of the carrier phase turbulence with one-way coupled Lagrangian particles. The geometries are a square and a rectangular duct with width-to-height aspect ratio $AR$ of 3 operating at $Re_{τ,c}=360$ . The present study is designed to determine the effect of turbulence-driven secondary motion on the particle dynamics. Our results show that a weak cross-flow secondary motion significantly changes the cross-sectional map of the particle concentration, mean ve…
Plane Couette flow, the flow between two parallel planes moving in opposite directions, is an example of wall-bounded flow experiencing a transition to turbulence with an ordered coexistence of turbulent and laminar domains in some range of Reynolds numbers [R_g,R_t]. When the aspect-ratio is sufficiently large, this coexistence occurs in the form of alternately turbulent and laminar oblique bands. As R goes up trough the upper threshold R_t, the bands disappear progressively to leave room to a uniform regime of featureless turbulence. This continuous transition is studied here by means of und…
We experimentally investigate the drag modification by neutrally buoyant finite-size particles with various aspect ratios in a Taylor-Couette (TC) turbulent flow. The current Reynolds number, $Re$, ranges from $6.5\times10^3$ to $2.6\times10^4$, and the particle volume fraction, $Φ$, is up to $10\%$. Particles with three kinds of aspect ratio, $λ$, are used: $λ=1/3$ (oblate), $λ=1$ (spherical) and $λ=3$ (prolate). Unlike the case of bubbly TC flow, we find that the suspended finite-size particles increase the drag of the TC system regardless of their aspect ratios. In addition, the normalized …
We present high-precision measurements of the Nusselt number N as a function of the Rayleigh number R for cylindrical samples of water (Prandtl number sigma = 4.38) with diameters D = 49.7, 24.8, and 9.2 cm, all with aspect ratio Gamma = D/L = 1 (L is the sample height). In addition, we present data for D = 49.7 and Gamma = 1.5, 2, 3, and 6. For each sample the data cover a range of a little over a decade of R. For Gamma = 1 they jointly span the range 10^7 < R < 10^11. Where needed, the data were corrected for the influence of the finite conductivity of the top and bottom plates and of the si…
We present high-precision measurements of the Nusselt number N as a function of the Rayleigh number R for cylindrical samples of water (Prandtl number sigma = 4.4) with a diameter D of 49.7 cm and heights L = 116.3, 74.6, and 50.6 cm, as well as for D = 24.8 cm and L = 90.2 cm. For each aspect ratio Gamma = D/L = 0.28, 0.43, 0.67, and 0.98 the data cover a range of a little over a decade of R. The maximum R ~= 10^12 and Nusselt number N ~= 600 were reached for Gamma = 0.43 and D = 49.7. The data were corrected for the influence of the finite conductivity of the top and bottom plates on the hea…
We carry out Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of flows in closed rectangular ducts with several aspect ratios. The Navier-Stokes equations are discretized through a second-order finite difference scheme, with non-uniform grids in two directions. The duct cross-sectional area is maintained constant as well as the flow rate, which allows to investigate which is the appropriate length scale in the Reynolds number for a good scaling in the laminar and in the fully turbulent regimes. We find that the Reynolds number based on the half length of the short side leads to a critical Reynolds number whi…
We present a theoretical analysis of large aspect-ratio turbulent vertical convection that yields two relationships between heat flux and wall shear stress, measured respectively by the Nusselt number ($\text{Nu}$) and shear Reynolds number ($\text{Re}_τ$), in terms of the Rayleigh ($\text{Ra}$) and Prandtl numbers ($\text{Pr}$): $\text{Re}_τ^2 \text{Nu} = f(\text{Pr}) \text{Pr}^{-1} \text{Ra}$ in the high-$\text{Ra}$ limit and $\text{Nu} \approx C \text{Pr}^{\varepsilon} \text{Re}_τ$ with $\varepsilon=1/3$ for $\text{Pr} \gg1$ and $\varepsilon=1$ for $\text{Pr} \ll 1$, where $f(\text{Pr})$ is…
In this contribution, we present an application of a novel perturbation approach (denoted as an Overset approach) to a generic turbulent channel flow. The derivation of the governing equations (the Non-Linear Perturbation Equations extended with fluctuating viscous terms) is presented as well as subgrid-scale modeling aspects which results in the Overset LES (OLES) method. The application of the Overset method is illustrated with a generic fully developed turbulent channel flow, the results of which show excellent agreement with reference Direct Numerical Simulation data. The ability of the ov…
We experimentally and numerically investigate the temporal aspects of turbulent spots spreading in a plane Couette flow for transitional Reynolds numbers between 300 and 450. Spot growth rate, spot advection rate and large-scale flow intensity are measured as a function of time and Reynolds number. All these quantities show similar dynamics clarifying the role played by large-scale flows in the advection of the turbulent spot. The contributions of each possible growth mechanism: growth induced by large scale advection or growth by destabilization, are discussed for the different stages of the …
The large-scale flow structure and the turbulent transfer of heat and momentum are directly measured in highly turbulent liquid metal convection experiments for Rayleigh numbers varied between $4 \times 10^5$ and $\leq 5 \times 10^9$ and Prandtl numbers of $0.025~\leq~Pr~\leq ~0.033$. Our measurements are performed in two cylindrical samples of aspect ratios $Γ=$ diameter/height $= 0.5$ and 1 filled with the eutectic alloy GaInSn. The reconstruction of the three-dimensional flow pattern by 17 ultrasound Doppler velocimetry sensors detecting the velocity profiles along their beamlines in differ…
After decades of experimental, theoretical, and numerical research in fluid dynamics, many aspects of turbulence remain poorly understood. The main reason for this is often attributed to the multiscale nature of turbulent flows, which poses a formidable challenge. There are, however, properties of these flows whose roles and inter-connections have never been clarified fully. In this article, we present a new connection between the pressure drop, viscous dissipation, and the turbulent energy spectrum, which, to the best of our knowledge, has never been established prior to our work. We use this…
The arrangement of brine above water across a micro porous permeable membrane is used to study high Rayleigh Number($10^{11}- 10^{10}$) high Schmidt number(650)turbulent convection. The flux shows 4/3$^{rd}$ scaling with line plume as the near wall coherent structures. Shifting of multiple large scale flow cells result in changing near membrane mean shear directions for large aspect ratios. Lower aspect ratios show single large scale flow cell and constant sense of mean shear.
We analyse the entrainment and energetics of equal and opposite axisymmetric turbulent air plumes in a vertically confined space at a Rayleigh number of $1.24\times 10^{7}$ using theory and direct numerical simulation. On domains of sufficiently large aspect ratio, the steady state consists of turbulent plumes penetrating an interface between two layers of approximately uniform buoyancy. As described by Baines and Turner (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 37, 1969, pp. 51-80), upon penetrating the interface the flow in each plume becomes forced and behaves like a constant-momentum jet, due to a reduction in…
The purpose of this contribution is to summarize and discuss recent advances regarding the onset of turbulence in shear flows. The absence of a clear cut instability mechanism, the spatio-temporal intermittent character and extremely long lived transients are some of the major difficulties encountered in these flows and have hindered progress towards understanding the transition process. We will show for the case of pipe flow that concepts from nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics can help to explain the onset of turbulence. In particular the turbulent structures ('puffs') observed close…
We investigated the side-wall effects on turbulent bands in channel flow at transitional Reynolds numbers by direct numerical simulations using the open source spectral-element code Nektar++. The width-to-height aspect ratio of 50:1 is considered for this study. Our study shows that turbulent bands can survive the collision with the side wall above bulk Reynolds number of Re around 1000 but decay below Re around 975, i.e. the critical Reynolds number should be approximately between the two Reynolds numbers. We also discussed about the underlying mechanism for the decay of the band at low Reyno…
Nonpremixed turbulent reacting flows are intrinsically difficult to model due to the strong coupling between turbulent motions and reaction. The large amount of heat released by a typical hydrocarbon flame leads to significant modifications of the thermodynamic variables and the molecular transport coefficients and thus alters the fluid dynamics. Additionally, in nonpremixed combustion, the flame has a complex spatial structure. Localized expansions and contractions occur, enhancing the dilatational motions. Therefore, the compressibility of the flow and the heat release are intimately related…
We discuss two aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations in a unique setting; a closed cylindrical cell of aspect ratio of one. First, we present a comprehensive comparison of statistical quantities such as energy dissipation rates and boundary layer thickness scales. Data are used from three simulation run series at Prandtl numbers $Pr$ that cover two orders of magnitude. In contrast to most previous studies in RBC the focus of the present work is on convective turbulence at very low Prandtl numbers including $Pr=0.021$ …
In this contribution a numerical study of a turbulent jet flow is presented. The simulation results of two different variants of the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) are compared. The first is the well-established D3Q19 MRT model extended by a Smagorinsky Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The second is the D3Q27 Factorized Cascaded Lattice Boltzmann (FCLB) model without any additional explicit turbulence model. For this model no studies of turbulent flow with high resolution on nonuniform grids existed so far. The underlying computational procedure uses a time nested refinement technique and a …
Coherent large-scale circulations of turbulent thermal convection in air have been studied experimentally in a rectangular box heated from below and cooled from above using Particle Image Velocimetry. The hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection was found by varying the temperature difference between the bottom and the top walls of the chamber (the Rayleigh number was changed within the range of $10^7 - 10^8$). The hysteresis loop comprises the one-cell and two-cells flow patterns while the aspect ratio is kept constant ($A=2 - 2.23$). We found that the change of the sign of the degree of…
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 1.00$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 1.12$ m the height). They are for the Rayleigh-number range $4\times10^{11} \alt \Ra \alt 2\times10^{14}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 2\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.321 \pm 0.002$ and $N_0 = 0.0776$, consistent with classical turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a system with laminar boundary layers belo…
We measured Reynolds numbers R_e of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection over the Rayleigh-number range 2 times 10^8 < R < 10^11 and Prandtl-number range 3.3 < sigma < 29 for cylindrical samples of aspect ratio Gamma = 1. For R < R_c = 3 times 10^9 we found R_e ~ R^beta_eff with beta_eff = 0.46 < 1/2. Here both the sigma- and R-dependences are quantitatively consistent with the Grossmann-Lohse (GL) prediction. For R > R_c we found R_e = 0.106 sigma^-3/4 R^1/2, which differs from the GL prediction. The relatively sharp transition at R_c to the large-R regime suggests a qualitative and sudden ch…
Investigations of counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow (TCF) in the narrow gap limit are conducted in a very large aspect ratio apparatus. The phase diagram is presented and compared to that obtained by Andereck et al. The spiral turbulence regime is studied by varying both internal and external Reynolds numbers. Spiral turbulence is shown to emerge from the fully turbulent regime via a continuous transition appearing first as a modulated turbulent state, which eventually relaxes locally to the laminar flow. The connection with the intermittent regimes of the plane Couette flow (pCf) is discus…
The meridional component of the earth's rotation is often neglected in geophysical contexts. This is referred to as the `traditional approximation' and is justified by the typically small vertical velocity and aspect ratio of such problems. Ocean fronts are regions of strong horizontal buoyancy gradient and are associated with strong vertical transport of tracers and nutrients. Given these comparatively large vertical velocities, non-traditional rotation may play a role in governing frontal dynamics. Here the effects of non-traditional rotation on a front in turbulent thermal wind balance are …
The aim of the present work is to investigate the role of coherent structures in the generation of the secondary flow in a turbulent square duct. The coherent structures are defined as connected regions of flow where the product of the instantaneous fluctuations of two velocity components is higher than a threshold based on the long-time turbulence statistics, in the spirit of the three-dimensional quadrant analysis proposed by Lozano-Durán et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 694, 2012, pp. 100-130). We consider both the direct contribution of the structures to the mean in-plane velocity components a…
In a recent study we demonstrated the emergence of turbulence in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate of Rb-87 atoms. An intriguing observation in such a system is the behavior of the turbulent cloud during free expansion. The aspect ratio of the cloud size does not change in the way one would expect for an ordinary non-rotating (vortex-free) condensate. Here we show that the anomalous expansion can be understood, at least qualitatively, in terms of the presence of vorticity distributed throughout the cloud, effectively counteracting the usual reversal of the aspect ratio seen in free time-of-fli…
Turbulent-laminar patterns near transition are simulated in plane Couette flow using an extension of the minimal flow unit methodology. Computational domains are of minimal size in two directions but large in the third. The long direction can be tilted at any prescribed angle to the streamwise direction. Three types of patterned states are found and studied: periodic, localized, and intermittent. These correspond closely to observations in large aspect ratio experiments.
An artificial intelligence (AI) control system is developed to maximize the mixing rate of a turbulent jet. This system comprises six independently operated unsteady minijet actuators, two hot-wire sensors placed in the jet, and genetic programming for the unsupervised learning of a near-optimal control law. The ansatz of this law includes multi-frequency open-loop forcing, sensor-feedback and nonlinear combinations thereof. Mixing performance is quantified by the decay rate of the centreline mean velocity of jet. Intriguingly, the learning process of AI control discovers the classical forcing…
We investigate the existence of multiple turbulent states in highly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow in the range of $\mathrm{Ta}=10^{11}$ to $9\cdot10^{12}$, by measuring the global torques and the local velocities while probing the phase space spanned by the rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinder. The multiple states are found to be very robust and are expected to persist beyond $\mathrm{Ta}=10^{13}$. The rotation ratio is the parameter that most strongly controls the transitions between the flow states; the transitional values only weakly depend on the Taylor number. However, complex p…
We study the topology and the temporal dynamics of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a liquid metal with a Prandtl number of 0.03 located inside a box with a square base area and an aspect ratio of five. Experiments and numerical simulations are focused on the moderate Rayleigh number range, where a new cellular flow regime has been reported by a previous study (Akashi et al., Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol.4, 2019, 033501). This flow structure shows symmetries with respect to the vertical planes crossing at the center of the container. The dynamic behaviour is dominated by strong three-dimensio…
Two aspects of turbulent flows have been the subject of extensive, split research efforts: macroscopic properties, such as the frictional drag experienced by a flow past a wall, and the turbulent spectrum. The turbulent spectrum may be said to represent the fabric of a turbulent state; in practice it is a power law of exponent α(the "spectral exponent") that gives the revolving velocity of a turbulent fluctuation (or "eddy") of size s as a function of s. The link, if any, between macroscopic properties and the turbulent spectrum remains missing. Might it be found by contrasting the frictional …
A direct numerical simulation of an oblique shock wave impinging on a turbulent boundary layer at Mach number 2.28 is carried out at moderate Reynolds number, simulating flow conditions similar to those of the experiment by Dupont et al. (2006). The low-frequency shock unsteadiness, whose characteristics have been the focus of considerable research efforts, is here investigated via the Morlet wavelet transform. Owing to its compact support in both physical and Fourier spaces, the wavelet transformation makes it possible to track the time evolution of the various scales of the wall-pressure flu…
We have performed direct numerical simulations (DNS) of compressible turbulent channel flow at supercritical pressure with top and bottom isothermal walls kept respectively at a supercritical (Ttop > Tpb) and subcritical temperature (Tbot < Tpb), where Tpb is the pseudoboiling temperature. The DNS are conducted using a high-order discretization of the fully compressible Navier-Stokes equations in conservative form closed with the Peng-Robinsion (PR) state equation. Bulk density is adjusted to obtain a bulk pressure of approximately pb = 1.1pcr where pcr is the critical pressure of the working …
We present a systematic experimental study of geometric and statistical properties of thermal plumes in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection using the thermochromic-liquid-crystal (TLC) technique. The experiments were performed in three water-filled cylindrical convection cells with aspect ratios 2, 1, and 0.5 and over the Rayleigh-number range $5\times10^7 \leq Ra \leq 10^{11}$. TLC thermal images of horizontal plane cuts at various depths below the top plate were acquired. Three-dimensional images of thermal plumes were then reconstructed from the two-dimensional slices of the temperature fi…
Turbulent flows over dense canopies of rigid filaments of small size are investigated for different element heights and spacings using DNS. The flow can be decomposed into the element-coherent, dispersive flow, the Kelvin--Helmholtz-like rollers typically reported over dense canopies, and the background, incoherent turbulence. The canopies studied have spacings $s^+ = 3$--$50$, which essentially preclude the background turbulence from penetrating within. The dispersive velocity fluctuations are also mainly determined by the spacing, and are small deep within the canopy, where the footprint of …
