The meridional component of the earth's rotation is often neglected in geophysical contexts. This is referred to as the `traditional approximation' and is justified by the typically small vertical velocity and aspect ratio of such problems. Ocean fronts are regions of strong horizontal buoyancy gradient and are associated with strong vertical transport of tracers and nutrients. Given these comparatively large vertical velocities, non-traditional rotation may play a role in governing frontal dynamics.
Here the effects of non-traditional rotation on a front in turbulent thermal wind balance are considered using an asymptotic approach. Solutions are presented for a general horizontal buoyancy profile and examined in the simple case of a straight front. Non-traditional effects are found to depend strongly on the direction of the front and may lead to the generation of jets and the modification of the frontal circulation and vertical transport.
Wind-wave interaction involves wind forcing on wave surface and wave effects on the turbulent wind structures, which essentially influences the wind and wave loading on structures. Existing research on wind-wave interaction modeling ignores the inherent strong turbulences of wind. The present study aims to characterize the turbulent airflow over wave surfaces and wave dynamics under wind driving force. A high-fidelity two-phase model is developed to simulate highly turbulent wind-wave fields. Instead of using uniform wind, inherent wind turbulences are prescribed at the inlet boundary using th…
A wind tunnel experiment is shown to examine the reproducibility of generated wind fields in the laboratory utilizing an active grid. A motion protocol of the grid, designed to mimic a measured atmospheric wind speed time series, is therefore repeated 50 times and the flow is measured by a 2D hotwire (x-wire) system. The acquired wind speed time series are analysed in two different ways to identify the reproducible time scales. A direct comparison using the cross covariance function combined with two filtering methods and a statistic approach using one and two point analysis. Like that the rep…
Wind turbines operate in the atmospheric boundary layer, where they are exposed to the turbulent atmospheric flows. As the response time of wind turbine is typically in the range of seconds, they are affected by the small scale intermittent properties of the turbulent wind. Consequently, basic features which are known for small-scale homogeneous isotropic turbulence, and in particular the well-known intermittency problem, have an important impact on the wind energy conversion process. We report on basic research results concerning the small-scale intermittent properties of atmospheric flows an…
As a generalization of the mass-flux based classical stream-tube, the concept of momentum and energy transport tubes is discussed as a flow visualization tool. These transport tubes have the property, respectively, that no fluxes of momentum or energy exist over their respective tube mantles. As an example application using data from large-eddy simulation, such tubes are visualized for the mean-flow structure of turbulent flow in large wind farms, in fully developed wind-turbine-array boundary layers. The three-dimensional organization of energy transport tubes changes considerably when turbin…
We present a unique method for solving for the Reynolds stress in turbulent canonical flows, which is based on momentum balance for a control volume moving at the local mean velocity. Comparisons with experimental and computational data in simple geometries show quite good agreement. An alternate picture for the turbulence momentum transport is offered, based on the closed-form expression for the Reynolds stress. The turbulence momentum balance is verified using DNS data. This approach has potential applications in aerodynamics, and also represents a possible method for determining the Reynold…
At low Reynolds numbers, the wind flow in the wake of a single wind turbine is generally not turbulent. However, turbines in wind farms affect each other's wakes so that a turbulent flow can arise. In the present work, an analogue of this effect for the massless charge carrier flow around obstacles in graphene is outlined. We use a relativistic hydrodynamic simulation to analyze the flow in a sample containing impurities. Depending on the density of impurities in the sample, we indeed find evidence for potentially turbulent flow and discuss experimental consequences.
A population balance model coupled with large eddy simulations (LES) is adapted and applied to study the evolution of oil droplets in a turbulent jet including the effects of droplet breakup. A key unknown in simulating secondary breakup in turbulent multiphase jets is the inflow size distribution generated within the primary breakup zone near the nozzle exit. A mono-disperse injection inflow condition is commonly used for simplicity, but this choice is often unrealistic. In order to provide more realistic inlet conditions for LES, we develop a one dimensional (1D) parcel model to predict the …
We present a numerical study of Rayleigh-Bénard convection disturbed by a longitudinal wind. Our results show that under the action of the wind, the vertical heat flux through the cell initially decreases, due to the mechanism of plumes-sweeping, and then increases again when turbulent forced convection dominates over the buoyancy. As a result, the Nusselt number is a non-monotonic function of the shear Reynolds number. We provide a simple model that captures with good accuracy all the dynamical regimes observed. We expect that our findings can lead the way to a more fundamental understanding …
A tentative scaling theory is presented of a tree swaying in a turbulent wind. It is argued that the turbulence of the air within the crown is in the inertial regime. An eddy causes a dynamic bending response of the branches according to a time criterion. The resulting expression for the penetration depth of the wind yields an exponent which appears to be consistent with that pertaining to the morphology of the tree branches. An energy criterion shows that the dynamics of the branches is basically passive. The possibility of hydrodynamic screening by the leaves is discussed.
In order to enable simulations of developing wind turbine array boundary layers with highly realistic inflow conditions a concurrent precursor method for Large Eddy Simulations is proposed. In this method we consider two domains simultaneously, i.e. in one domain a turbulent Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) without wind turbines is simulated in order to generate the turbulent inflow conditions for a second domain in which the wind turbines are placed. The benefit of this approach is that a) it avoids the need for large databases in which the turbulent inflow conditions are stored and the corre…
We investigate experimentally the early stage of the generation of waves by a turbulent wind at the surface of a viscous liquid. The spatio-temporal structure of the surface deformation is analyzed by the optical method Free Surface Synthetic Schlieren, which allows for time-resolved measurements with a micrometric accuracy. Because of the high viscosity of the liquid, the flow induced by the turbulent wind in the liquid remains laminar, with weak surface drift velocity. Two regimes of deformation of the liquid-air interface are identified. In the first regime, at low wind speed, the surface i…
An efficient technique to simulate turbulent particle-laden flow at high mass loadings within the four-way coupled simulation regime is presented. The technique implements large eddy simulation, discrete phase simulation, a deterministic treatment of inter-particle collisions and an energy-balanced particle agglomeration model. The algorithm to detect inter-particle collisions is such that the computational costs scale linearly with the number of particles present in the computational domain. On detection of a collision, particle agglomeration is tested based on the pre-collision kinetic energ…
Solar wind turbulence is dominated by Alfvénic fluctuations but the power spectral exponents somewhat surprisingly evolve toward the Kolmogorov value of -5/3, that of hydrodynamic turbulence. We show that at 1AU the turbulence decomposes linearly into two coexistent components perpendicular and parallel to the local average magnetic field. The first of these is consistent with propagating Alfvén wavepackets and shows the scaling expected of Alfvénic turbulence, namely Irosnikov- Kraichnan. The second shows Kolmogorov scaling which we also find in the number and magnetic energy density, and Poy…
It is shown that correlation function of the mean wind velocity in a turbulent thermal convection (Rayleigh number $Ra \sim 10^{11}$) exhibits exponential decay with a very long correlation time, while corresponding largest Lyapunov exponent is certainly positive. These results together with the reconstructed phase portrait indicate presence of a chaotic component in the examined mean wind. Telegraph approximation is also used to study relative contribution of the chaotic and stochastic components to the mean wind fluctuations and an equilibrium between these components has been studied. Since…
We present the construction of an original stochastic model for the instantaneous turbulent kinetic energy at a given point of a flow, and we validate estimator methods on this model with observational data examples. Motivated by the need for wind energy industry of acquiring relevant statistical information of air motion at a local place, we adopt the Lagrangian description of fluid flows to derive, from the $3$D+time equations of the physics, a $0$D+time-stochastic model for the time series of the instantaneous turbulent kinetic energy at a given position. Specifically, based on the Lagrangi…

Regimes of interactions between motions on different time-scales are investigated in the FLOSSII dataset for nocturnal near-surface stable boundary layer (SBL) turbulence. The non-stationary response of turbulent vertical velocity variance to non-turbulent, sub-mesoscale wind velocity variability is analysed using the bounded variation, finite element, vector autoregressive factor models (FEM-BV-VARX) clustering method. Several locally stationary flow regimes are identified with different influences of sub-meso wind velocity on the turbulent vertical velocity variance. In each flow regime, we …

The simultaneous observations from a Doppler weather radar and an instrumented micrometeorological tower, offer an opportunity to dissect the effects of a gust front on the surface layer turbulence in a tropical convective boundary layer. We present a case study where a sudden drop in temperature was noted at heights within the surface layer during the passage of a gust front in the afternoon time. Consequently, this temperature drop created an interface which separated two different turbulent regimes. In one regime the turbulent temperature fluctuations were large and energetic, whereas in th…

Every year hurricanes and other extreme wind storms cause billions of dollars in damage worldwide. For residential construction, such failures are usually associated with roofs, which see the largest aerodynamic loading. However, determining aerodynamic loads on different portions of North American houses is complicated by the lack of clear load paths and non-linear load sharing in wood frame roofs. This problem of fluid-structure interaction requires both wind tunnel testing and full-scale structural testing. A series of wind tunnel tests have been performed on a house in a simulated atmosphe…
The integral length scale ($\mathcal{L}$) is considered to be characteristic of the largest motions of a turbulent flow, and as such, it is an input parameter in modern and classical approaches of turbulence theory and numerical simulations. Its experimental estimation, however, could be difficult in certain conditions, for instance, when the experimental calibration required to measure $\mathcal{L}$ is hard to achieve (hot-wire anemometry on large scale wind-tunnels, and field measurements), or in 'standard' facilities using active grids due to the behaviour of their velocity autocorrelation …
The present investigation provides the first field characterization of the influence of turbulent inflow on the blade structural response of a utility-scale wind turbine (2.5MW), using the unique facility available at the Eolos Wind Energy Research Station of the University of Minnesota. A representative one-hour dataset under a stable atmosphere is selected for the characterization, including the inflow turbulent data measured from the meteorological tower, high-resolution blade strain measurement at different circumferential and radiation positions along the blade, and the wind turbine opera…
Sutherland and Melville (2015a) investigated the relative contributions to the total dissipation rate in the ocean surface wave boundary layer of different breaking wave scales, from large-scale whitecaps to micro-breakers. Based on their measurements of geometric/kinematic properties of breaking waves for a wide range of wave ages, they inferred the dissipation rates from breaking as a function of scale. These results were compared with their complementary measurements of the total dissipation rate in the underlying wave boundary layer. They reported that the total depth-integrated dissipatio…
We simulate three-dimensional, horizontally periodic Rayleigh-Bénard convection between free-slip horizontal plates, rotating about a distant horizontal axis. When both the temperature difference between the plates and the rotation rate are sufficiently large, a strong horizontal wind is generated that is perpendicular to both the rotation vector and the gravity vector. The wind is turbulent, large-scale, and vertically sheared. Horizontal anisotropy, engendered here by rotation, appears necessary for such wind generation. Most of the kinetic energy of the flow resides in the wind, and the ver…
Moist stratified turbulence is studied in a two-dimensional Boussinesq system influenced by condensation and evaporation. The problem is set in a periodic domain and employs simple evaporation and condensation schemes, wherein both the processes push parcels towards saturation. Numerical simulations demonstrate the emergence of a moist turbulent state consisting of ordered structures with a clear power-law type spectral scaling from initially spatially uncorrelated conditions. An asymptotic analysis in the limit of rapid condensation and strong stratification shows that, for initial conditions…
Turbulence properties are examined before, during and after a coronal mass ejection (CME) detected by the6Wind spacecraft on July 2012. The power-law scaling of the structure functions, providing information on the7power spectral density and flatness of the velocity, magnetic filed and density fluctuations, were examined. The8third-order moment scaling law for incompressible, isotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence was observed9in the preceding and trailing solar wind, as well as in the CME sheath and magnetic cloud. This suggests that10the turbulence could develop sufficiently after the shoc…
The visco-diffusive McIntyre instability (McIntyre 1970) has been suggested as a possible source for density layer formation around laboratory and oceanic vortices. This suggestion is here quantitatively addressed using idealised, axisymmetric, numerical simulations of a simple Gaussian-like vortex in thermal wind balance, floating in a rotating, stratified flow. Numerical simulations are complemented by a local stability analysis derived from the seminal study (McIntyre 1970). It is confirmed that the McIntyre instability is responsible for the layering observed around laboratory vortices, bu…
It has been recognized that the turbulent cross helicity (correlation between the velocity and magnetic-field fluctuations) can play an important role in several magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma phenomena such as the global magnetic-field generation, turbulence suppression, etc. Despite its relevance to the cross-helicity evolution, little attention has been paid to the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity, $ε_W$. In this paper, we consider the model expression for the dissipation rate of the turbulent cross helicity. In addition to the algebraic model, an evolution equation of $ε_…
We study the anisotropy with respect to the local magnetic field of turbulent magnetic fluctuations at magnetofluid scales in the solar wind. Previous measurements in the fast solar wind obtained axisymmetric anisotropy, despite that the analysis method allows nonaxisymmetric structures. These results are probably contaminated by the wind expansion that introduces another symmetry axis, namely, the radial direction, as indicated by recent numerical simulations. These simulations also show that while the expansion is strong, the principal fluctuations are in the plane perpendicular to the radia…
Energy equipartition is a powerful theoretical tool for understanding astrophysical plasmas. It is invoked, for example, to measure magnetic fields in the interstellar medium (ISM), as evidence for small-scale turbulent dynamo action, and, in general, to estimate the energy budget of star-forming molecular clouds. In this study we motivate and explore the role of the volume-averaged root-mean-squared (rms) magnetic coupling term between the turbulent, $δ\mathbf{B}$ and large-scale, $\mathbf{B}_0$ fields, $\left< (δ\mathbf{B}\cdot\mathbf{B}_0)^{2} \right>^{1/2}_{\mathcal{V}}$. By considering th…

In the present paper, an aerodynamic investigation of a high-speed train is performed. In the first section of this article, a generic high-speed train against a turbulent flow is simulated, numerically. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations combined with the turbulence model are applied to solve incompressible turbulent flow around a high-speed train. Flow structure, velocity and pressure contours and streamlines at some typical wind directions are the most important results of this simulation. The maximum and minimum values are specified and discussed. Also, the pressure coeff…
Accurate models of turbulent wind fields have become increasingly important in the atmospheric sciences, e.g., for the determination of spatiotemporal correlations in wind parks, the estimation of individual loads on turbine rotor and blades, or for the modeling of particle-turbulence interaction in atmospheric clouds or pollutant distributions in urban settings. Due to the prohibitive task of resolving the fields across a broad range of scales, one oftentimes has to resort to stochastic wind field models that fulfill specific, empirically observed, properties. Here, we present a new model for…
In this letter we report on turbulent acceleration of the dissipation of magnetic field in the postshock re- gion of a Poynting flux-dominated flow, such as the Crab pulsar wind nebula. We have performed two- dimensional resistive relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of subsonic turbulence driven by the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability at the shock fronts of the Poynting flux-dominated flows in pulsar winds. We find that turbulence stretches current sheets which substantially enhances the dissipation of magnetic field, and that most of the initial magnetic field energy is dissipated with…
