We analyze the coherence properties of a cold or a thermal neutron by utilizing the Wigner quasidistribution function. We look in particular at a recent experiment performed by Badurek {\em et al.}, in which a polarized neutron crosses a magnetic field that is orthogonal to its spin, producing highly non-classical states. The quantal coherence is extremely sensitive to the field fluctuation at high neutron momenta. A "decoherence parameter" is introduced in order to get quantitative estimates of the losses of coherence.
The use of the Wigner function for the study of quantum transport in open systems present severe criticisms. Some of the problems arise from the assumption of infinite coherence length of the electron dynamics outside the system of interest. In the present work the theory of the Wigner function is revised assuming a finite coherence length. A new dynamical equation is found, corresponding to move the Wigner momentum off the real axis, and a numerical analysis is performed for the case of study of the onedimensional potential barrier.
Quantum coherence is a crucial resource for quantum information processing. By employing the language of coherence orders largely applied in NMR systems, quantum coherence has been currently addressed in terms of multiple quantum coherences (MQCs). Here we investigate the $α$-MQCs, a novel class of multiple quantum coherences which is based on $α$-relative purity, an information-theoretic quantifier analogous to quantum fidelity and closely related to Rényi relative entropy of order $α$. Our framework enables linking $α$-MQCs to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information (WYDSI), an asymmetry monoto…
We introduce modified generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson (MGWYD) skew information and modified weighted generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson (MWGWYD) skew information. By revisiting state-channel interaction based on MGWYD skew information, a family of coherence measures with respect to quantum channels is proposed. Furthermore, explicit analytical expressions of these coherence measures of qubit states are derived with respect to different quantum channels. Moreover, complementarity relations based on MGWYD skew information and MWGWYD skew information are also presented. Specifically, the conservatio…
We analyze theoretically polar molecules confined in planar arrays of one dimensional tubes. In the classical limit, if the number of tubes is finite, new types of "clustered Wigner crystals" with increasingly many molecules per unit cell can be stabilized by tuning the in-plane angle between the dipolar moments and the tube direction. Quantum mechanically, these phases melt into distinct "clustered Luttinger liquids." We calculate the phase diagram of the system and study the quantum melting of the clustered phases. We find that the requirements for exploring these phases are reachable in cur…
Quantum engineering now allows to design and construct multi-qubit states in a range of physical systems. These states are typically quite complex in nature, with disparate, but relevant properties that include both single and multi-qubit coherences and even entanglement. All these properties can be assessed by reconstructing the density matrix of those states - but the large parameter space can mean physical insight of the nature of those states and their coherence can be hard to achieve. Here we explore how the Wigner function of a multipartite system and its visualization provides rich info…
The coupling of weak light fields to Rydberg states of atoms under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) leads to the formation of Rydberg polaritons which are quasi-particles with tunable effective mass and long-range interactions. Confined to one spatial dimension their low energy physics is that of a moving-frame Luttinger liquid which due to the long-range character of the repulsive interaction can form a Wigner crystal. We calculate the Luttinger $K$ parameter using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations and find that under typical slow-light condit…
Many practical sampling patterns for function approximation on the rotation group utilizes regular samples on the parameter axes. In this paper, we relate the mutual coherence analysis for sensing matrices that correspond to a class of regular patterns to angular momentum analysis in quantum mechanics and provide simple lower bounds for it. The products of Wigner d-functions, which appear in coherence analysis, arise in angular momentum analysis in quantum mechanics. We first represent the product as a linear combination of a single Wigner d-function and angular momentum coefficients, otherwis…
Optical quantum memory is an essential element for long distance quantum communication and photonic quantum computation protocols. The practical implementation of such protocols requires an efficient quantum memory with long coherence time. Beating the no-cloning limit, for example, requires efficiencies above 50\%. An ideal optical fibre loop has a loss of 50% in 100 $μ$ s, and until now no universal quantum memory has beaten this time-efficiency limit. Here, we report results of a gradient echo memory (GEM) experiment in a cold atomic ensemble with a 1/e coherence time up to 1ms and maximum …
We demonstrate experimentally a novel technique for characterizing transverse spatial coherence using the Wigner distribution function. The presented method is based on measuring interference between a pair of rotated and displaced replicas of the input beam with an area-integrating detector, and it can be superior in regimes when array detectors are not available. We analyze the quantum optical picture of the presented measurement for single-photon signals and discuss possible applications in quantum information processing.
Propagation of the Wigner function is studied on two levels of semiclassical propagation, one based on the van-Vleck propagator, the other on phase-space path integration. Leading quantum corrections to the classical Liouville propagator take the form of a time-dependent quantum spot. Its oscillatory structure depends on whether the underlying classical flow is elliptic or hyperbolic. It can be interpreted as the result of interference of a \emph{pair} of classical trajectories, indicating how quantum coherences are to be propagated semiclassically in phase space. The phase-space path-integral…
In diffraction experiments with particle beams, several effects lead to a fringe visibility reduction of the interference pattern. We theoretically describe the intensity one can measure in a double-slit setup and compare the results with the experimental data obtained with cold neutrons. Our conclusion is that for cold neutrons the fringe visibility reduction is due not to decoherence, but to initial incoherence.

We report on the storage of orbital angular momentum of light in a cold ensemble of cesium atoms. We employ Bragg diffraction to retrieve the stored optical information impressed into the atomic coherence by the incident light fields. The stored information can be manipulated by an applied magnetic field and we were able to observe collapses and revivals due to the rotation of the stored atomic Zeeman coherence for times longer than 15 $μs$.
Recent experimental results demonstrated the generation of a quantum superpositon (MQS), involving a number of photons in excess of 5x10^4, which showed a high resilience to losses. In order to perform a complete analysis on the effects of de-coherence on this multiphoton fields, obtained through the Quantum Injected Optical Parametric Amplifier (QIOPA), we invesigate theoretically the evolution of the Wigner functions associated to these states in lossy conditions. Recognizing the presence of negative regions in the W-representation as an evidence of non-classicality, we focus our analysis on…
We present a feasible scheme for reconstructing the quantum state of a field prepared inside a lossy cavity. Quantum coherences are normally destroyed by dissipation, but we show that at zero temperature we are able to retrieve enough information about the initial state, making possible to recover its Wigner function as well as other quasiprobabilities. We provide a numerical simulation of a Schroedinger cat state reconstruction.

We analyse some features of the class of discrete Wigner functions that was recently introduced by Gibbons et al. to represent quantum states of systems with power-of-prime dimensional Hilbert spaces [Phys. Rev. A 70, 062101 (2004)]. We consider "cat" states obtained as coherent superpositions of states with positive Wigner function; for such states we show that the oscillations of the discrete Wigner function typically spread over the entire discrete phase-space (including the regions where the two interfering states are localized). This is a generic property which is in sharp contrast with t…
Although the foundations of quantum and classical physics are much different, it is often difficult to pinpoint which features of a particular system are intrinsically "quantum". Perhapse, the most clear-cut distinction between "classical" and "quantum" can be made for systems composed of many particles when the properties of the ensemble are determined by the correlations between the constituents. The issue of grasping the nature of entanglement (i.e. quantum correlations) lies in its formal, discriminative definition: "if state is not classical then it is entangled". A possible remedy would …
We analyze the coherence properties of neutron wave packets, after they have interacted with a phase shifter undergoing different kinds of statistical fluctuations. We give a quantitative (and operational) definition of decoherence and compare it to the standard deviation of the distribution of the phase shifts. We find that in some cases the neutron ensemble is more coherent, even though it has interacted with a wider (i.e. more disordered) distribution of shifts. This feature is independent of the particular definition of decoherence: this is shown by proposing and discussing an alternative …
We prove a theorem, using the density functional approach and relying on a classical result by Lieb and Simon on Thomas-Fermi model, showing that in the thermodynamic limit bulk matter is at most semiclassical and coherence preserving. The connection between quantum fluid dynamics and density functional theory in the formulation due to Kohn and Sham play a significant role leading to a Vlasov-Poisson system of equations for the Wigner function. Coherence stability is achieved by noting that small oscillations in bulk matter are damped by Landau damping. In some conditions the initial Wigner fu…
We experimentally study the coherence time of a below-threshold Raman laser in which the gain medium is a gas of magneto-optically trapped atoms. The second-order optical coherence exhibits photon bunching with a correlation time which is varied by two orders of magnitude by controlling the gain. Results are in good agreement with a simple analytic model which suggests the effect is dominated by gain, rather than dispersion, in this system. Cavity ring-down measurements show the photon lifetime, related to the first-order coherence time, is also increased.
We introduce, for each state of a bosonic quantum field, its quadrature coherence scale (QCS), a measure of the range of its quadrature coherences. Under coupling to a thermal bath, the purity and QCS are shown to decrease on a time scale inversely proportional to the QCS squared. The states most fragile to decoherence are therefore those with quadrature coherences far from the diagonal. We further show a large QCS is difficult to measure since it induces small scale variations in the state's Wigner function. These two observations imply a large QCS constitutes a mark of "macroscopic coherence…
In Thouless pump, the charge transport in a one-dimensional insulator over an adiabatic cycle is topologically quantized. For nonequilibrium initial states, however, interband coherence will induce a previously unknown contribution to Thouless pumping. Though not geometric in nature, this contribution is independent of the time scale of the pumping protocol. In this work, we perform a detailed analysis of our previous finding [Phys. Rev. B 91, 085420 (2015)] in an already available cold-atom setup. We show that initial states with interband coherence can be obtained via a quench of the system'…
We propose a numerical method for compensating dispersion effects in optical coherence tomography that does not require a priori knowledge of dispersive properties of the sample. The method is based on the generalized autoconvolution function, and its principle of operation can be intuitively visualized using the Wigner distribution function formalism.
The coherence of quantum systems is crucial to quantum information processing. While it has been demonstrated that superconducting qubits can process quantum information at microelectronics rates, it remains a challenge to preserve the coherence and therefore the quantum character of the information in these systems. An alternative is to share the tasks between different quantum platforms, e.g. cold atoms storing the quantum information processed by superconducting circuits. In our experiment, we characterize the coherence of superposition states of 87Rb atoms magnetically trapped on a superco…
Coherent effects manifested in light scattering from cold, optically dense and disordered atomic systems are reviewed from a primarily theoretical point of view. Development of the basic theoretical tools is then elaborated through several physical atomic physics based processes which have been at least partly explored experimentally. These include illustrations drawn from the coherent backscattering effect, random lasing in atomic gases, quantum memories and light-atoms interface assisted by the light trapping mechanism. Current understanding and challenges associated with the transition to h…
Recent experiments have realized an all-optical photon transistor using a cold atomic gas. This approach relies on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in conjunction with the strong interaction among atoms excited to high-lying Rydberg states. The transistor is gated via a so-called Rydberg spinwave, in which a single Rydberg excitation is coherently shared by the whole ensemble. In its absence the incoming photon passes through the atomic ensemble by virtue of EIT while in its presence the photon is scattered rendering the atomic gas opaque. An important current challenge is to pre…
Parity-time($\mathcal{PT}$)-symmetric systems, featuring real eigenvalues despite its non-Hermitian nature, have been widely utilized to achieve exotic functionalities in the classical realm, such as loss-induced transparency or lasing revival. By approaching the exceptional point (EP) or the coalescences of both eigenvalues and eigenstates, unconventional effects are also expected to emerge in pure quantum $\mathcal{PT}$ devices. Here, we report experimental evidences of spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking in a single cold $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ion, and more importantly, a counterin…
We employ the Wigner function formalism to simulate partially coherent, dissipative electron transport in biased semiconductor superlattices. We introduce a model collision integral with terms that describe energy dissipation, momentum relaxation, and the decay of spatial coherences (localization). Based on a particle-based solution to the Wigner transport equation with the model collision integral, we simulate quantum electronic transport at 10 K in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice and accurately reproduce its current density vs field characteristics obtained in experiment.
Quantum correlations and coherence generated between two free spinless particles in the lattice, interacting with a common quantum phonon bath, are studied. The reduced density matrix is solved using the Markov approach. We show that the bath induces correlations between the particles. The coherence induced by the bath is studied, calculating off-diagonal elements of the density matrix, spatiotemporal dispersion, purity and quantum mutual information. We find a characteristic time-scale pointing out when this coherence is maximum. In addition, a Wigner-like distribution in the phase-space (lat…

We derive upper bounds for Hilbert-Schmidt's quantum coherence of general states of a $d$-level quantum system, a qudit, in terms of its incoherent uncertainty, with the latter quantified using the linear and von Neumann's entropies of the corresponding closest incoherent state. Similar bounds are obtained for Wigner-Yanase's coherence. The reported inequalities are also given as coherence-populations trade-off relations. As an application example of these inequalities, we derive quantitative wave-particle duality relations for multi-slit interferometry. Our framework leads to the identificati…
We study degenerate three photon down conversion as a potential scheme for generating nonclassical states of light which exhibit clear signatures of phase space interference. The Wigner function representing these states contains an interference pattern manifesting quantum coherence between distinct phase space components, and has substantial areas of negativity. We develop an analytical description of the interference pattern, which demonstrates how the oscillations of the Wigner function are built up by the superposition principle. We analyze the impact of dissipation and pump fluctuations o…
Strong repelling interactions between a few fermions or bosons confined in two-dimensional circular traps lead to particle localization and formation of quantum Wigner molecules (QWMs) possessing definite point-group space symmetries. These point-group symmetries are "hidden" (or emergent), namely they cannot be traced in the circular single-particle densities (SPDs) associated with the exact many-body wave functions, but they are manifested as characteristic signatures in the ro-vibrational spectra. An example, among many, are the few-body QWM states under a high magnetic field or at fast rot…
We apply the Wigner function formalism from quantum optics via two approaches, Wootters' discrete Wigner function and the generalized Wigner function, to detect quantum phase transitions in critical spin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ systems. We develop a general formula relating the phase space techniques and the thermodynamical quantities of spin models, which we apply to single, bipartite and multi-partite systems governed by the $XY$ and the $XXZ$ models. Our approach allows us to introduce a novel way to represent, detect, and distinguish first-, second- and infinite-order quantum phase transitions. Fur…
The Wigner function is a useful tool for exploring the transition between quantum and classical dynamics, as well as the behavior of quantum chaotic systems. Evolving the Wigner function for open systems has proved challenging however; a variety of methods have been devised but suffer from being cumbersome and resource intensive. Here we present an efficient fast-Fourier method for evolving the Wigner function, that has a complexity of $O(N\log N)$ where $N$ is the size of the array storing the Wigner function. The efficiency, stability, and simplicity of this method allows us to simulate open…
Many-body densities and correlation functions are of paramount importance for understanding quantum many-body physics. Here, we present a method to compute them; our approach is general and based on the action of bosonic or fermionic annihilation field operators on the many-body wavefunction. We analyze $N = 6$ quasi-one-dimensional harmonically-trapped bosons with weak to strong contact interaction strength up to the Tonks-Girardeau limit with infinite repulsion using the MultiConfigurational Time-Dependent Hartree method for indistinguishable particles (MCTDH-X). We compare our MCTDH-X solut…
We investigate quantum phase transitions and quantum coherence in a quantum compass chain under an alternating transverse magnetic field. The model can be analytically solved by the Jordan-Wigner transformation and this solution shows that it is equivalent to a two-component one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas on a lattice. We explore mutual effects of the staggered magnetic interaction and multi-site interactions on the energy spectra and analyze the ground state phase diagram. We use quantum coherence measures to identify the quantum phase transitions. Our results show that $l_1$ norm of coherenc…
Coherent motion of cold atoms in a standing-wave field is interpreted as a propagation in two optical potentials. It is shown that the wave-packet dynamics can be either regular or chaotic with transitions between these potentials after passing field nodes. Manifestations of de Broglie-wave chaos are found in the behavior of the momentum and position probabilities and the Wigner function. The probability of those transitions depends on the ratio of the squared detuning to the Doppler shift and is large in that range of the parameters where the classical motion is shown to be chaotic.
A binary mixture of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the presence of fragmentation-driving external lattice potentials forms two interdependent mean-field lattices made of each component. These effective mean-field lattices, like ordinary optical lattices, can induce additional fragmentation and phase coherence loss of BECs between lattice sites. In this study, we consider the nonequilibrium dynamics of two hyperfine states of one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, subjected to state-dependent optical lattices. Our numerical calculations using the truncated Wigner approximati…
Quantum memories are an integral component of quantum repeaters - devices that will allow the extension of quantum key distribution to communication ranges beyond that permissible by passive transmission. A quantum memory for this application needs to be highly efficient and have coherence times approaching a millisecond. Here we report on work towards this goal, with the development of a $^{87}$Rb magneto-optical trap with a peak optical depth of 1000 for the D2 $F=2 \rightarrow F'=3$ transition using spatial and temporal dark spots. With this purpose-built cold atomic ensemble to implement t…
A relativistic phase-space representation for a class of observables with matrix-valued Weyl symbols proportional to the identity matrix (charge-invariant observables)is proposed. We take into account the nontrivial charge structure of the position and momentum operators. The evolution equation coincides with its analog in relativistic quantum mechanics with nonlocal Hamiltonian under conditions where particle-pair creation does not take place (free particle and constant magnetic field). The differences in the equations are connected with peculiarities of the constraints on the initial conditi…
By using the coherent backscattering interference effect, we investigate experimentally and theoretically how coherent transport of light inside a cold atomic vapour is affected by the residual motion of atomic scatterers. As the temperature of the atomic cloud increases, the interference contrast dramatically decreases emphazising the role of motion-induced decoherence for resonant scatterers even in the sub-Doppler regime of temperature. We derive analytical expressions for the corresponding coherence time.
The coherence properties of the classical waves are discussed in terms of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation, and of a discrete representation by an ensemble of Hamiltonian systems. Wave quanta are related to specific "action fields", and phase-space distributions of phonons and photons are obtained by Wigner transform. For photons in a thermal environment, the proposed Wigner function evolves towards the Planck equilibrium distribution. It is shown that the free electromagnetic field can also be found in states of definite helicity, described by a complex vector potential.
We investigate theoretically the effects of vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) on magneto-optical rotation (MOR). We carry out a model study to show that VIC in the presence of a control laser and a magnetic field can lead to large enhancement in the rotation of the plane of polarization of a linearly polarized weak laser with vanishing circular dichroism. This effect can be realized in cold molecular gases and may be used as a sensitive probe for VIC. Such a large MOR angle can also be used to detect weak magnetic field with large measurement sensitivity.
We study the quantum dynamics of cold Bose atoms in a double well. It is shown that self-trapping, as well as population oscillations are common phenomena associated to nonlinear interactions. For larger $U/t$, multi-particle tunneling is damped and the quantum dynamics is dominated by the single-particle tunneling. The many-body system can be effectively described in a truncated Fock space. It exhibits coherence-decoherence oscillations in the temporal evolution. We predict a novel phenomenon of dynamical revival and collapse of matter wave fields in optical lattices in regimes near the super…
We report on the creation, observation and optimization of superposition states of cold atoms. In our experiments, rubidium atoms are prepared in a magneto-optical trap and later, after switching off the trapping fields, Faraday rotation of a weak probe beam is used to characterize atomic states prepared by application of appropriate light pulses and external magnetic fields. We discuss the signatures of polarization and alignment of atomic spin states and identify main factors responsible for deterioration of the atomic number and their coherence and present means for their optimization, like…
We review phase space techniques based on the Wigner representation that provide an approximate description of dilute ultra-cold Bose gases. In this approach the quantum field evolution can be represented using equations of motion of a similar form to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation but with stochastic modifications that include quantum effects in a controlled degree of approximation. These techniques provide a practical quantitative description of both equilibrium and dynamical properties of Bose gas systems. We develop versions of the formalism appropriate at zero temperature, where quantum fl…
We interpret cooperative scattering by a collection of cold atoms as a multiple scattering process. Starting from microscopic equations describing the response of $N$ atoms to a probe light beam, we represent the total scattered field as an infinite series of multiple scattering events. As an application of the method, we obtain analytical expressions of the coherent intensity in the double scattering approximation for Gaussian density profiles. In particular, we quantify the contributions of coherent backward and forward scattering.
