We introduce modified generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson (MGWYD) skew information and modified weighted generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson (MWGWYD) skew information. By revisiting state-channel interaction based on MGWYD skew information, a family of coherence measures with respect to quantum channels is proposed. Furthermore, explicit analytical expressions of these coherence measures of qubit states are derived with respect to different quantum channels. Moreover, complementarity relations based on MGWYD skew information and MWGWYD skew information are also presented. Specifically, the conservation relations are investigated, while two interpretations of them including symmetry-asymmetry complementarity and wave-particle duality have been proposed.
Uncertainty relations and complementarity relations are core issues in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory. By use of the generalized Wigner-Yanase-Dyson (GWYD) skew information, we derive several uncertainty and complementarity relations with respect to mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs), and general symmetric informationally complete positive operator valued measurements (SIC-POVMs), respectively. Our results include some existing ones as particular cases. We also exemplify our results by providing a detailed example.
Quantum measurements necessarily disturb the state of physical system. Once we perform a complete measurement, the system undergoes decoherence and loses its coherence. If there is no disturbance, the state retains all of its coherence. It is therefore natural to ask if there is trade-off between disturbance caused to a state and its coherence. We present a coherence disturbance complementarity relation using the relative entropy of coherence. For bipartite states we prove a complementarity relation between the quantum coherence, entanglement and disturbance. Similar relation also holds for qu…
We establish two complementarity relations for the relative entropy of coherence in quantum information processing, i.e., quantum dense coding and teleportation. We first give an uncertaintylike expression relating local quantum coherence to the capacity of optimal dense coding for bipartite system. The relation can also be applied to the case of dense coding by using unital memoryless noisy quantum channels. Further, the relation between local quantum coherence and teleportation fidelity for two-qubit system is given.
The ability that one system immediately affects another one by using local measurements is regarded as quantum steering, which can be detected by various steering criteria. Recently, Mondal et al. [Phys. Rev. A 98, 052330 (2018)] derived the complementarity relations of coherence steering criteria, and revealed that the quantum steering of system can be observed through the average coherence of subsystem. Here, we experimentally verify the complementarity relations between quantum steering criteria by employing two-photon Bell-like states and three Pauli operators. The results demonstrate that…
We describe spontaneous parametric down-conversion experiments in which induced coherence across two coupled interferometers results in high-visibility single-photon interference. Opening additional photon channels allows "which-path" information and reduces the visibility of the singlephoton interference, but results in nearly perfect visibility when photons are counted in coincidence. A simplified theoretical model accounts for these complementary observations and attributes them directly to the relations among the vacuum fields at the different crystals.
Quantum coherence is a key element in topical research on quantum resource theories and a primary facilitator for design and implementation of quantum technologies. However, the resourcefulness of quantum coherence is severely restricted by environmental noise, which is indicated by the loss of information in a quantum system, measured in terms of its purity. In this work, we derive the limits imposed by the mixedness of a quantum system on the amount of quantum coherence that it can possess. We obtain an analytical trade-off between the two quantities that upperbound the maximum quantum coher…
Various measures have been suggested recently for quantifying the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a given basis. We first use two of these, the l_1-norm and relative entropy measures, to investigate tradeoffs between the coherences of mutually unbiased bases. Results include relations between coherence, uncertainty and purity; tight general bounds restricting the coherences of mutually unbiased bases; and an exact complementarity relation for qubit coherences. We further define the average coherence of a quantum state. For the l_1-norm measure this is related to a natural 'coheren…
Coherence can be induced or stimulated in parametric down-conversion using two or three crystals when, for example, the idler modes of the crystals are aligned. Previous experiments with induced coherence [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 053601 (2015)] focused on which-path information and the role of vacuum fields in realizing complementarity via reduced visibility in single-photon interference. Here we describe experiments comparing induced and stimulated coherence. Different single-photon interference experiments were performed by blocking one of the pump beams in a three-crystal setup. Each counted …
Coherence plays a very important role in Grover search algorithm (GSA). In this paper, we define the normalization coherence N(C), where C is a coherence measurement. In virtue of the constraint of large N and Shannon's maximum entropy principle, a surprising complementary relationship between the coherence and the success probability of GSA is obtained. Namely, P_s(t)+N(C(t))\simeq 1, where C is in terms of the relative entropy of coherence and l_1 norm of coherence, t is the number of the search iterations in GSA. Moreover, the equation holds no matter in ideal or noisy environments. Conside…
Single photon first order interferences of spatially separated regions from the cone structure of spontaneous parametric down conversion allow for analyzing the role of the mode function in quantum optics. In earlier experiments the role of the vacuum fields could be demonstrated in induced coherence experiments as the source of complementarity \cite{Heu14}. Here the spatial coherence properties of these vacuum fields are measured and as the physical reason for complementarity in single photon quantum optics demonstrated.
This paper is a summary of my talk at SPIE2013. The organizers were kind enough to invite me to talk about anything I wanted, and I chose to bring up the notion of higher order complementarity and the fact that it may not be monotonic. I enter this discussion, which is rather speculative at this stage, by calculating a specific example. This is to be regarded as work in progress. We analyze a two-particle state and show that when mismatching the detector frequency response and the field frequency spectrum, several anomalous features become apparent. In particular, while we find several well kn…
Recently, a connection between quantum coherence and quantum steering was established and criteria for quantum steering or in other words, nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) were derived for two-qubit states. Here, we derive a set of complementarity relations between the steering or NAQC inequalities achieved by various criteria. We also extend the idea in the multi-partite scenario, specifically, in the three-qubit scenario, which can easily be generalized to the multi-partite scenario.
The visibilities of second-order (single-photon) and fourth-order (two-photon) interference have been observed in a Young's double-slit experiment using light generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and a photon-counting intensified CCD camera. Coherence and entanglement underlie one-and two-photon interference, respectively. As the effective source size is increased, coherence is diminished while entanglement is enhanced, so that the visibility of single-photon interference decreases while that of two-photon interference increases. This is the first experimental demonstration of t…
We study the skew information-based coherence of quantum states and derive explicit formulas for Werner states and isotropic states in a set of autotensor of mutually unbiased bases (AMUBs). We also give surfaces of skew information-based coherence for Bell-diagonal states and a special class of X states in both computational basis and in mutually unbiased bases. Moreover, we depict the surfaces of the skew information-based coherence for Bell-diagonal states under various types of local nondissipative quantum channels. The results show similar as well as different features compared with relat…
We study the average skew information-based coherence for both random pure and mixed states. The explicit formulae of the average skew information-based coherence are derived and shown to be the functions of the dimension N of the state space. We demonstrate that as N approaches to infinity, the average coherence is 1 for random pure states, and a positive constant less than 1/2 for random mixed states. We also explore the typicality of average skew information-based coherence of random quantum states. Furthermore, we identify a coherent subspace such that the amount of the skew information-ba…
We construct the tripartite Bell-type inequalities of product states for l1-norm of coherence, relative entropy of coherence and skew information. Some three-qubit entangled states violate these inequalities. Particulary, the tripartite Bell-type inequality for relative entropy of coherence is always violated by the W class pure or mixed states as well as the GHZ class pure or mixed states, being used as entanglement witness.
Quantifying coherence is a key task in both quantum mechanical theory and practical applications. Here, a reliable quantum coherence measure is presented by utilizing the quantum skew information of the state of interest subject to a certain broken observable. This coherence measure is proven to fulfill all the criteria (especially the strong monotonicity) recently introduced in the resource theories of quantum coherence. The coherence measure has an analytic expression and an obvious operational meaning related to quantum metrology. In terms of this coherence measure, the distribution of the …
We study the ability of a quantum channel to generate quantum coherence when it applies to incoherent states. We define the measure of coherence generating power (CGP) for a generic quantum channel to be the average coherence generated by the quantum channel acting on a uniform ensemble of incoherent states based on the skew information-based coherence measure. We present explicitly the analytical formulae of the CGP for any arbitrary finite dimensional unitary channels. We derive the mean value of the CGP over the unitary groups and investigate the typicality of the normalized CGP. Furthermor…
Based on the nonincreasing property of quantum coherence via skew information under incoherent completely positive and trace-preserving maps, we propose a non-Markovianity measure for open quantum processes. As applications, by applying the proposed measure to some typical noisy channels, we find that it is equivalent to the three previous measures of non-Markovianity for phase damping and amplitude damping channels, i.e., the measures based on the quantum trace distance, dynamical divisibility, and quantum mutual information. For the random unitary channel, it is equivalent to the non-Markovi…
Quantum coherence is a crucial resource for quantum information processing. By employing the language of coherence orders largely applied in NMR systems, quantum coherence has been currently addressed in terms of multiple quantum coherences (MQCs). Here we investigate the $α$-MQCs, a novel class of multiple quantum coherences which is based on $α$-relative purity, an information-theoretic quantifier analogous to quantum fidelity and closely related to Rényi relative entropy of order $α$. Our framework enables linking $α$-MQCs to Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information (WYDSI), an asymmetry monoto…
We investigate the system-environment information flow from the point of view ofcomplete complementarity relations. We consider some commonly used noisy quantum channels:Amplitude damping, phase damping, bit flip, bit-phase flip, phase flip, depolarizing, and correlatedamplitude damping. By starting with an entangled bipartite pure quantum state, with the linearentropy being the quantifier of entanglement, we study how entanglement is redistributed and turnedinto general correlations between the degrees of freedom of the whole system. For instance, it ispossible to express the entanglement ent…
We analyze quantum correlations and quantum coherence in neutrino oscillations. To this end, we exploit complete complementarity relations (CCR) that fully characterize the interplay between different correlations encoded in a quantum system both for pure and mixed states. We consider the CCR for neutrino oscillations both in the case of plane-waves (pure state) and of wave packets (mixed state). In this last case we find a complex structure of correlations depending on the mixing angle, and we show the connection with the non local advantage of quantum coherence, a relevant quantifier of cohe…
We study the degree to which the coherence of quantum states is affected by noise. We give the definition of the $n$-th decay rate and investigate the coherence of Bell-diagonal states under $n$ iterations of channels. We derive explicit formulas of the $n$-th decay rates based on $l_1$ norm of coherence, relative entropy of coherence and skew information-based coherence. It is found that the larger $n$ is, the faster the $n$-th decay rate decreases as the parameter $p$ of Bell-diagonal states increases. Moreover, for any fixed $n$, with the increase of $p$, Bell-diagonal states can be complet…
We utilize IBM's quantum computers to perform a full quantum simulation of the optical quantum eraser (QE) utilizing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a variable partially-polarizing beam splitter (VPPBS) at the input. The use of the VPPBS motivates us to introduce the entangled quantum eraser, for which the path information is erased using a Bell-basis measurement. We also investigate the behavior of the wave aspect, i.e., the quantum coherence, as well as the particle character, represented by the predictability and entanglement, as delineated in complete complementarity relations (CCRs). A…
We study number-phase uncertainty in a laser-driven, effectively four-level atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and coherent population trapping (CPT). Uncertainty is described using (entropic) knowledge of the two complementary variables, namely, number and phase, where knowledge is defined as the relative entropy with respect to a uniform distribution. In the regime where the coupling and probe lasers are approximately of equal strength, and the atom exists in a CPT state, there is coherence between the ground states, and correspondingly large phase knowledge a…
The concept of quantum coherence and its possible use as a resource are currently the subject of active researches. Uncertainty and complementarity relations for quantum coherence allow one to study its changes with respect to other characteristics of the process of interest. Protocols of quantum information processing often use measurements that have a special inner structure. Quantum designs are considered as tools with a perspective of fruitful applications in quantum information processing. We obtain uncertainty and certainty relations for coherence averaged with respect to a set of design…
We explore the local quantum coherence and the local quantum uncertainty, based on Wigner-Yanase skew information, in the ground state of the anisotropic spin-1/2 XY chain in transverse magnetic field. We show that the skew information, as a figure of merit, supplies the necessary information to reveal the occurrence of the second order phase transition and the completely factorized ground state in the XY model. Additionally, in the same context, we also discuss the usefulness of a simple experimentally friendly lower bound of local quantum coherence. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the connec…
Based on modern quantum measurement theory, we use Zurek's "triple model" to study, from the viewpoint of quantum information theory, the wave and particle nature of a photon in a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In the process of quantum measurement, the state of both the system and the detector is not an entangled state but a correlated state. We find that the information gain about the photon is related to the correlations (including classical and quantum correlations) between the photon and the detector. We also derive the relationship between the information gain and the fringe visi…
A connection of the Wigner-Yanase skew information and multiple quantum (MQ) NMR coherences is considered at different temperatures and evolution times of nuclear spins with dipole-dipole interactions in MQ NMR experiments in solids. It is shown that the Wigner-Yanase skew information at temperature $T$ is equal to the double second moment of the MQ NMR spectrum at the double temperature for any evolution times. A comparison of the many-spin entanglement obtained with the Wigner-Yanase information and the Fisher information is conducted.
Quantum coherence stemming from the superposition behaviour of a particle beyond the classical realm, serves as one of the most fundamental features in quantum mechanics. The wave-particle duality phenomenon, which shares the same origin, has a strong relationship with quantum coherence. Recently, an elegant relation between quantum coherence and path information has been theoretically derived. Here, we experimentally test such new duality by l1-norm measure and the minimum-error state discrimination. We prepare three classes of two-photon states encoded in polarisation degree of freedom, with…
Nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC) based on coherence complementarity relations is generally viewed as a stronger nonclassical correlation than Bell nonlocality. An arbitrary two-qubit state with NAQC must be an entangled state, which demonstrates that the criterion of NAQC can also be regarded as an entanglement witness. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the NAQC for Bell-diagonal states with high fidelity in an optics-based platform. We perform local measurements on a subsystem in three mutually unbiased bases and reconstruct the density matrices of the measured states…
Wave-particle duality is a typical example of Bohr's complementarity principle that plays a significant role in quantum mechanics. Previous studies used the visibility of an interference pattern to quantify the wave property and used path information to quantify the particle property. However, coherence is the core and basis of the interference phenomenon. If we could use coherence to characterize the wave property, the understanding of wave-particle duality would be strengthened. A recent theoretical work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 160406 (2016)] found two relations between quantum coherence and …
Quantifying entanglement is a work in progress which is important for the active field of quantum information and computation. A measure of bipartite pure state entanglement is proposed here, named entanglement coherence, which is essentially the normalized coherence of the entangled state in its Schmidt basis. Its value is 1 for maximally entangled states, and 0 for separable states, irrespective of the dimensionality of the Hilbert space. So a maximally entangled state is also the one which is maximally coherent in its Schmidt basis. Quantum entanglement and quantum coherence are thus intima…
The dynamics of relative entropy and $l_{1}$-norm of coherence, as well as, the Wigner-Yanase-skew and quantum Fisher information are studied for a time-dependent coupled XY spin chain in presence of a time-dependent transverse magnetic field. Independent of the initial state of the system and while the relative entropy of coherence, $l_{1}$-norm of coherence, and quantum Fisher information are incapable, surprisingly, the dynamic Wigner-Yanase-skew information can truly spotlight the equilibrium critical point. We also observe that when the system is quenched to the critical point, these quan…
Recently, it was shown that quantum entanglement is an indispensable part of the duality behavior of light. Here, we report a surprisingly intimate connection between the stereographic projection and the duality--entanglement nature of a single photon. We show that, the duality--entanglement relation [Optica \textbf{5}, 942 (2018)], naturally emerges from the stereographic projection geometry. We demonstrate that this geometry is complementarity sensitive; in the sense that, it is sensitive to the particle nature, wave nature, and entanglement nature of a single photon.
We give an alternative proof of skew information via operator algebra approach and show its strong monotonicity under particular quantum TPCP maps. We then formulate a family of new resource measure if the resource can be characterized by a resource destroying map and the free operation should be also modified. Our measure is easy-calculating and applicable to the coherence resource theory as well as quantum asymmetry theory. The operational interpretation needs to be further investigated.
We found that the Wigner-Yanase skew information, which has been recently proposed as a measure of coherence in [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{113}, 170401(2014)], can increase under a class of operations which may be interpreted as incoherent following the framework of Baumgratz et al., while being phase sensitive.
Nowadays, geometric tools are being used to treat a huge class of problems of quantum information science. By understanding the interplay between the geometry of the state space and information-theoretic quantities, it is possible to obtain less trivial and more robust physical constraints on quantum systems. In this sense, here we establish a geometric lower bound for the Wigner-Yanase skew information (WYSI), a well-known information theoretic quantity recently recognized as a proper quantum coherence measure. Starting from a mixed state evolving under unitary dynamics, while WYSI is a const…
