We show that measuring the trajectories of charged particles to finite accuracy leads to the commutation relations needed for the derivation of the free space Maxwell equations using the {\it discrete ordered calculus} (DOC). We note that the finite step length derivation of the discrete difference version of the single particle Dirac equation implies the discrete version of the p,q commutation relations for a free particle. We speculate that a careful operational analysis of the change in momenta occurring in a step-wise continuous solution of the discrete Dirac equation could supply the missing source-sink terms in the DOC derivation of the Maxwell equations, and lead to a finite and discrete (``renormalized'') quantum electrodynamics (QED).
We have obtained the commutation relation for a cavity mode driven by coherent light and interacting with a two-level atom. We have found that the commutation relation for a free cavity mode with or without photons is just the usual commutation relation. However, the commutation relation for a cavity mode, which is interacting with a two-level atom, turns out to be different from the usual one.
We propose and demonstrate scheme for direct experimental testing of quantum commutation relations for Pauli operators. The implemented device is an advanced quantum processor that involves two programmable quantum gates. Depending on a state of two-qubit program register, we can test either commutation or anti-commutation relations. Very good agreement between theory and experiment is observed, indicating high-quality performance of the implemented quantum processor and reliable verification of commutation relations for Pauli operators.
We propose an experiment to directly prove the commutation relation between bosonic annihilation and creation operators, based on the recent experimental success in single-photon subtraction and addition. We devise a single-photon interferometer to realize coherent superpositions of two sequences of photon addition and subtraction. Depending on the interference outcome, the commutation relation is directly proven or a highly nonclassical state is produced. Experimental imperfections are assessed to show that the realization of the scheme is highly feasible.
It seems that the problem of finding a suitable position operator for photon has been solved in a recently published work which is based on a new commutation relation between position and momentum operators of massless particles[1]. Although the authors of [1] have presented a classical reasoning in favour of the new commutator, here we are going to find this new commutator based on a quantum mechanical argument.
We derive suitable uncertainty relations for characteristics functions of phase and number variables obtained from the Weyl form of commutation relations. This is applied to finite-dimensional spin- like systems, which is the case when describing the phase difference between two field modes, as well as to the phase and number of a single-mode field. Some contradictions between the product and sums of characteristic functions are noted.

This paper presents some methods of representing canonical commutation relations in terms of hyperfinite-dimensional matrices, which are constructed by nonstandard analysis. The first method uses representations of a nonstandard extension of finite Heisenberg group, called hyperfinite Heisenberg group. The second is based on hyperfinite-dimensional representations of so(3). Then, the cases of infinite degree of freedom are argued in terms of the algebra of hyperfinite parafermi oscillators, which is mathematically equivalent to a hyperfinite-dimensional representation of so(n).
Internal symmetries can be used to classify multiple solutions to the time energy canonical commutation relation (TE-CCR). The dynamical behavior of solutions to the TE-CCR posessing particular internal symmetries involving time reversal differ significantly from solutions to the TE-CCR without those particular symmetries, implying a connection between the internal symmetries of a quantum system, its internal unitary dynamics, and the TE-CCR.
We address the multiplicity of solutions to the time-energy canonical commutation relation for a given Hamiltonian. Specifically, we consider a particle spatially confined in a potential free interval, where it is known that two distinct self-adjoint and compact time operators conjugate to the system Hamiltonian exist. The dynamics of the eigenvectors of these operators indicate that different time operators posses distinguishing properties that can unambiguously associate them to specific aspects of the quantum time problem.
It is shown, that for quantum systems the vectorfield associated with the equations of motion may admit alternative Hamiltonian descriptions, both in the Schrödinger and Heisenberg pictures. We illustrate these ambiguities in terms of simple examples.
The canonical commutation relation is the hallmark of quantum theory and Heisenberg's uncertainty relation is a direct consequence of it. But despite its fundamental role in quantum theory, surprisingly, its genuine direct experimental test has hitherto not been performed. In this article, we present a novel scheme to directly test the canonical commutation relation between two dichotomic observables, by exploiting the notion of weak measurement. The imaginary part of a suitably formulated weak value enables this direct test. The measurement of the weak value of a path-qubit observable in a ne…
We present the experimental realization of a scheme, based on single-photon interference, for implementing superpositions of distinct quantum operations. Its application to a thermal light field (a well-categorized classical entity) illustrates quantum superposition from a new standpoint and provides a direct and quantitative verification of the bosonic commutation relation between creation and annihilation operators. By shifting the focus towards operator superpositions, this result opens interesting alternative perspectives for manipulating quantum states.
The Born-Jordan method for constructing the quantum condition of the Matrix Mechanics is pointed out to be inappropriate in the present work. We modify this method and reconstruct the quantum condition by setting up a new expression for the Bohr quantum condition with the help of the (n,n) elements of the matrix $\oint\hat{p}(t){\rm d}\hat{x}(t)$.
Using the Weyl commutation relations over a finite field we introduce a family of error-correcting quantum stabilizer codes based on a class of symmetric matrices over the finite field satisfying certain natural conditions. When the field is GF(2) the existence of a rich class of such symmetric matrices is demonstrated by a simple probabilistic argument depending on the Chernoff bound for i.i.d symmetric Bernoulli trials. If, in addition, these symmetric matrices are assumed to be circulant it is possible to obtain concrete examples by a computer program. The quantum codes thus obtained admit …
A realistic physical axiomatic approach of the relativistic quantum field theory is presented. Following the action principle of Schwinger, a covariant and general formulation is obtained. The correspondence principle is not invoked and the commutation relations are not postulated but deduced. The most important theorems such as spin-statistics, and CPT are proved. The theory is constructed form the notion of basic field and system of basic fields. In comparison with others formulations, in our realistic approach fields are regarded as real things with symmetry properties. Finally, the general…
Invertible maps from operators of quantum obvservables onto functions of c-number arguments and their associative products are first assessed. Different types of maps like Weyl-Wigner-Stratonovich map and s-ordered quasidistribution are discussed. The recently introduced symplectic tomography map of observables (tomograms) related to the Heisenberg-Weyl group is shown to belong to the standard framework of the maps from quantum observables onto the c-number functions. The star-product for symbols of the quantum-observable for each one of the maps (including the tomographic map) and explicit re…
We report experimental verification of the commutation relation for Pauli spin operators using quantum interference of the single-photon polarization state. By superposing the quantum operations $σ_z σ_x$ and $σ_x σ_z$ on a single-photon polarization state, we have experimentally implemented the commutator, $[σ_{z}, σ_{x}]$, and the anticommutator, $\{σ_{z}, σ_{x}\}$, and have demonstrated the relative phase factor of $π$ between $σ_z σ_x$ and $σ_x σ_z$ operations. The experimental quantum operation corresponding to the commutator, $[σ_{z}, σ_{x}]=kσ_y$, showed process fidelity of 0.94 compare…
Recently a quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive, and absorbing dielectric medium has been developed and applied to a system consisting of two infinite half-spaces with a common planar interface (H.T. Dung, L. Knoell, and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 57, in press). Here we show that the scheme, which is based on the classical Green-tensor integral representation of the electromagnetic field, applies to any inhomogeneous medium. For this purpose we prove that the fundamental equal-time commut…
We have recently developed a quantized fluctuational electrodynamics (QFED) formalism to describe the quantum aspects of local thermal balance formation and to formulate the electromagnetic field ladder operators so that they no longer exhibit the anomalies reported for resonant structures. Here we show how the QFED can be used to resolve between the left and right propagating fields to bridge the QFED and the quantum optical input-output relations commonly used to describe selected quantum aspects of resonators. The generalized model introduces a density of states concept describing interfere…
Non-Fock representations of the canonical commutation relations modeled over an infinite-dimensional nuclear space are constructed in an explicit form. The example of the nuclear space of smooth real functions of rapid decrease results in nonequivalent quantizations of scalar fields.
The quantum weak value draws many attentions recently from theoretical curiosity to experimental applications. Now we design an unusual weak measuring procedure as the pre-selection, mid-selection and post-selection to study the correlation function of two weak values, which we called the weak correlation function. In this paper, we proposed an weak measurement experiment to measure the canonical commutator $[\hat{x},\hat{p}]=i\hbar$ in quantum mechanics. Furthurmore, we found the intriguing equivalence between the canonical commutation relation and Riemann hypothesis, and then obtained the we…
Given a Heisenberg algebra A of canonical commutation relations modelled over an infinite-dimensional nuclear space, a Hopf algebra of its quantum deformations is also an algebra of canonical commutation relations whose Fock representation recovers some non-Fock representation of A.
The problem of whether or not the equations of motion of a quantum system determine the commutation relations was posed by E.P.Wigner in 1950. A similar problem (known as "The Inverse Problem in the Calculus of Variations") was posed in a classical setting as back as in 1887 by H.Helmoltz and has received great attention also in recent times. The aim of this paper is to discuss how these two apparently unrelated problems can actually be discussed in a somewhat unified framework. After reviewing briefly the Inverse Problem and the existence of alternative structures for classical systems, we di…
The uncertainty principle is the most important for the foundations of quantum mechanics but it still remains failed to reach a consensus of its interpretation, which gives rise to debates upon its physical nature. In this work, we address the problem of its foundation from a different aspect to present an alternative formulation for proving the uncertainty relations in a general way in terms of commutation relations and action function. The relationship between the de Broglie relation and the uncertainty principle is studied from a new angle. As a result, it is demonstrated that the de Brogli…
Non-equilibrium quantum field theory studies time dependence of processes which are not available for the S-matrix description. One of the new methods of investigation in non-equilibrium quantum theory is the stochastic limit method. This method is an extension of the works by Bogoliubov, van Hove and Prigogine and it permits to study not only the system but also the reservoir degrees of freedom. We consider the stochastic limit of translation invariant Hamiltonians in quantum field theory and show that the master field satisfies a new type of commutation relations, the so called entangled (or…
In this short paper, the commutator of monomials of operators obeying constant commutation relations is expressed in terms of anticommutators. The formula involves Bernoulli numbers or Euler polynomials evaluated in zero. The role of Bernoulli numbers in quantum-mechanical identities such as the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula is emphasized and applications connected to ordering problems as well as to Ehrenfest theorem are proposed.
We determine the commutation relations satisfied by the quantized electromagnetic field in the presence of macroscopic dielectrics and conductors, with arbitrary dispersive and dissipative properties. We consider in detail the case of two plane-parallel material slabs, separated by an empty gap, and we show that at all points in the empty region between the slabs, including their surfaces, the electromagnetic fields always satisfy free-field canonical equal-time commutation relations. This result is a consequence of general analyticity and fall-off properties at large frequencies satisfied by …
Coherent feedback control considers purely quantum controllers in order to overcome disadvantages such as the acquisition of suitable quantum information, quantum error correction, etc. These approaches lack a systematic characterization of quantum realizability. Recently, a condition characterizing when a system described as a linear stochastic differential equation is quantum was developed. Such condition was named physical realizability, and it was developed for linear quantum systems satisfying the quantum harmonic oscillator canonical commutation relations. In this context, open two-level…
We show that the series product, which serves as an algebraic rule for connecting state-based input/output systems, is intimately related to the Heisenberg group and the canonical commutation relations. The series product for quantum stochastic models then corresponds to a non-abelian generalization of the Weyl commutation relation. We show that the series product gives the general rule for combining the generators of quantum stochastic evolutions using a Lie-Trotter product formula.
In this paper we construct the commutators of the Fedosov * (a generalization of the Moyal star product) on the phase space of S2. It is shown that this product obeys the standard angular momentum commutation relations in ordinary nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The purpose of this paper is three-fold. One is to find an exact, non-perturbative solution to the commutators of the Fedosov *. The other is to verify that these commutation relations correspond to angular momentum commutation relations as in ordinary nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The last is to show a more general computation…
We provide theory and formal insight on the Green function quantization method for absorptive and dispersive spatial-inhomogeneous media in the context of dielectric media. We show that a fundamental Green function identity, which appears, e.g., in the fundamental commutation relation of the electromagnetic fields, is also valid in the limit of non-absorbing media. We also demonstrate how the zero-point field fluctuations yields a non-vanishing surface term in configurations without absorption, when using a more formal procedure of the Green function quantization method. We then apply the pres…
We revisit Wigner's question about the admissible commutation relations for coordinate and velocity operators given their equations of motion (EOM). In more general terms we want to consider the question of how to quantize dynamically equivalent Hamiltonian structures. A unique answer can presumably be given in those cases, where we have a dynamical symmetry. In this case arbitrary deformations of the symmetry algebra should be dynamically equivalent. We illustrate this for the linear as well as the singular 1d-oscillator. In the case of nonlinear EOM quantum corrections have to be taken into …
We show that the perfect commutation graph is the sufficient tight condition for admitting the noncontextual description of each observable set satisfying it in the yes-no question scenario. With this condition, we propose a method for proving the monogamy relation between two informationtheoretic contextuality inequalities by decomposing the total commutation graph into perfect subgraphs. The results offer a powerful tool to investigate the contextuality and to understand quantum information theory. This theoretical work can be experimentally verified in current laboratorial technology.
Despite the fact that it has been known since the time of Heisenberg that quantum operators obey a quantum version of Newton's laws, students are often told that derivations of quantum mechanics must necessarily follow from the Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formulations of mechanics. Here, we first derive the existing Heisenberg equations of motion from Newton's laws and the uncertainty principle using only the equations $F=\frac{dP}{dt}$, $P=m\frac{dV}{dt}$, and $\left[X,P\right]=i$. Then, a new expression for the propagator is derived that makes a connection between time evolution in quantum mec…
We revisit the quantum phase operator $Φ$ introduced by Garrison and Wong. Denoting by $N$ the number operator, we provide a detailed proof of the Heisenberg commutation relation $ΦN - NΦ= iI$ on the natural maximal domain $D(ΦN) \cap D(N Φ)$ as well as the failure of the Weyl commutation relations, and discuss some further interesting properties of this pair.
We discuss the Jaynes-Cummings model in different representations of the algebra of canonical commutation relations. The first conclusion is that all the irreducible representations lead to equivalent physical predictions. However, the reducible representation recently introduced as a candidate for `QED without infinities' leads to new effects. We analyze from this perspective the experiments on Rabi oscillations performed by the Kastler-Brossel Laboratory group from Paris. Surprisingly, the results seem to support the reducible representation approach. We also discuss possibilities of more de…
We present an approach to a non-commutative-like phase space which allows to analyze quasi-free states on the CAR algebra in analogy to quasi-free states on the CCR algebra. The used mathematical tools are based on a new algebraic structure the "Grassmann algebra of canonical anti-commutation relations" (GAR algebra) which is given by the twisted tensor product of a Grassmann and a CAR algebra. As a new application, the corresponding theory provides an elegant tool for calculating the fidelity of two quasi-free fermionic states which is needed for the study of entanglement distillation within …
Two generalizations of Kempf's quadratic canonical commutation relation in one dimension are considered. The first one is the most general quadratic commutation relation. The corresponding nonzero minimal uncertainties in position and momentum are determined and the effect on the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator in an electric field is studied. The second extension is a function-dependent generalization of the simplest quadratic commutation relation with only a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position. Such an uncertainty now becomes dependent on the average positio…
Uncertainty relations provide fundamental limits on what can be said about the properties of quantum systems. For a quantum particle, the commutation relation of position and momentum observables entails Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. A third observable is presented which satisfies canonical commutation relations with both position and momentum. The resulting triple of pairwise canonical observables gives rise to a Heisenberg-type uncertainty relation for the product of three standard deviations. We derive the smallest possible value of this bound and determine the specific squeezed state …

Various aspects of dissipative and nondissipative decoherence of Rabi oscillations are discussed in the context of field quantization in alternative representations of CCR. Theory is confronted with experiment, and a possibility of more conclusive tests is analyzed.
Quantum symmetries that leave invariant physical transition probabilities are described by projective representations of Lie groups. The mathematical theory of projected representations for topologically connected Lie groups is reviewed and applied to the inhomogeneous symplectic group ISp(2n). The projective representations are given in terms of the ordinary unitary representations of the central extension of the group with respect to its first homotopy group direct product with its second cohomology group. The second cohomology group of ISp(2n) is the one dimensional abelian group and the ce…
In describing a dynamical system, the greatest part of the work for a theoretician is to translate experimental data into differential equations. It is desirable for such differential equations to admit a Lagrangian and/or an Hamiltonian description because of the Noether theorem and because they are the starting point for the quantization. As a matter of fact many ambiguities arise in each step of such a reconstruction which must be solved by the ingenuity of the theoretician. In the present work we describe geometric structures emerging in Lagrangian, Hamiltonian and Quantum description of a…
We determine the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator where the coordinates and momenta are assumed to obey the modified commutation relations [x_i,p_j]=i hbar[(1+ beta p^2) delta_{ij} + beta' p_i p_j]. These commutation relations are motivated by the fact they lead to the minimal length uncertainty relations which appear in perturbative string theory. Our solutions illustrate how certain features of string theory may manifest themselves in simple quantum mechanical systems through the modification of the canonical commutation relations. We discuss whether such effe…
Based on the assumption that time evolves only in one direction and mechanical systems can be described by Lagrangeans, a dynamical C*-algebra is presented for non-relativistic particles at atomic scales. Without presupposing any quantization scheme, this algebra is inherently non-commutative and comprises a large set of dynamics. In contrast to other approaches, the generating elements of the algebra are not interpreted as observables, but as operations on the underlying system; they describe the impact of temporary perturbations caused by the surroundings. In accordance with the doctrine of …
This paper considers a class of open quantum systems with an algebraic structure of dynamic variables, including the Pauli matrices for finite-level systems as a particular case. The Hamiltonian and the operators of coupling of the system to the external bosonic fields depend linearly on the system variables. The fields are represented by quantum Wiener processes which drive the system dynamics in the form of a quasilinear Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic differential equation whose drift vector and dispersion matrix are affine and linear functions of the system variables. This quasilin…
In noncommutative space to maintain Bose-Einstein statistics for identical particles at the non-perturbation level described by deformed annihilation-creation operators when the state vector space of identical bosons is constructed by generalizing one-particle quantum mechanics it is explored that the consistent ansatz of commutation relations of phase space variables should simultaneously include space-space noncommutativity and momentum-momentum noncommutativity, and a new type of boson commutation relations at the deformed level is obtained. Consistent perturbation expansions of deformed an…
Three dimensional Dirac oscillator was considered in deformed space obeyed to deformed commutation relations known as Snyder-de Sitter algebra. Snyder-de Sitter commutation relations gives rise to appearance minimal uncertainty in position as well as in momentum. To derive energy spectrum and wavefunctions of the Dirac oscillator supersymmetric quantum mechanics and shape invariance technique was applied.
