We derive suitable uncertainty relations for characteristics functions of phase and number variables obtained from the Weyl form of commutation relations. This is applied to finite-dimensional spin- like systems, which is the case when describing the phase difference between two field modes, as well as to the phase and number of a single-mode field. Some contradictions between the product and sums of characteristic functions are noted.
Using the Weyl commutation relations over a finite field we introduce a family of error-correcting quantum stabilizer codes based on a class of symmetric matrices over the finite field satisfying certain natural conditions. When the field is GF(2) the existence of a rich class of such symmetric matrices is demonstrated by a simple probabilistic argument depending on the Chernoff bound for i.i.d symmetric Bernoulli trials. If, in addition, these symmetric matrices are assumed to be circulant it is possible to obtain concrete examples by a computer program. The quantum codes thus obtained admit …
We show that the series product, which serves as an algebraic rule for connecting state-based input/output systems, is intimately related to the Heisenberg group and the canonical commutation relations. The series product for quantum stochastic models then corresponds to a non-abelian generalization of the Weyl commutation relation. We show that the series product gives the general rule for combining the generators of quantum stochastic evolutions using a Lie-Trotter product formula.
Invertible maps from operators of quantum obvservables onto functions of c-number arguments and their associative products are first assessed. Different types of maps like Weyl-Wigner-Stratonovich map and s-ordered quasidistribution are discussed. The recently introduced symplectic tomography map of observables (tomograms) related to the Heisenberg-Weyl group is shown to belong to the standard framework of the maps from quantum observables onto the c-number functions. The star-product for symbols of the quantum-observable for each one of the maps (including the tomographic map) and explicit re…
The uncertainty principle is the most important for the foundations of quantum mechanics but it still remains failed to reach a consensus of its interpretation, which gives rise to debates upon its physical nature. In this work, we address the problem of its foundation from a different aspect to present an alternative formulation for proving the uncertainty relations in a general way in terms of commutation relations and action function. The relationship between the de Broglie relation and the uncertainty principle is studied from a new angle. As a result, it is demonstrated that the de Brogli…

We revisit the quantum phase operator $Φ$ introduced by Garrison and Wong. Denoting by $N$ the number operator, we provide a detailed proof of the Heisenberg commutation relation $ΦN - NΦ= iI$ on the natural maximal domain $D(ΦN) \cap D(N Φ)$ as well as the failure of the Weyl commutation relations, and discuss some further interesting properties of this pair.
Uncertainty relations provide fundamental limits on what can be said about the properties of quantum systems. For a quantum particle, the commutation relation of position and momentum observables entails Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. A third observable is presented which satisfies canonical commutation relations with both position and momentum. The resulting triple of pairwise canonical observables gives rise to a Heisenberg-type uncertainty relation for the product of three standard deviations. We derive the smallest possible value of this bound and determine the specific squeezed state …
Quantum symmetries that leave invariant physical transition probabilities are described by projective representations of Lie groups. The mathematical theory of projected representations for topologically connected Lie groups is reviewed and applied to the inhomogeneous symplectic group ISp(2n). The projective representations are given in terms of the ordinary unitary representations of the central extension of the group with respect to its first homotopy group direct product with its second cohomology group. The second cohomology group of ISp(2n) is the one dimensional abelian group and the ce…
The problem of whether or not the equations of motion of a quantum system determine the commutation relations was posed by E.P.Wigner in 1950. A similar problem (known as "The Inverse Problem in the Calculus of Variations") was posed in a classical setting as back as in 1887 by H.Helmoltz and has received great attention also in recent times. The aim of this paper is to discuss how these two apparently unrelated problems can actually be discussed in a somewhat unified framework. After reviewing briefly the Inverse Problem and the existence of alternative structures for classical systems, we di…
The canonical commutation relation is the hallmark of quantum theory and Heisenberg's uncertainty relation is a direct consequence of it. But despite its fundamental role in quantum theory, surprisingly, its genuine direct experimental test has hitherto not been performed. In this article, we present a novel scheme to directly test the canonical commutation relation between two dichotomic observables, by exploiting the notion of weak measurement. The imaginary part of a suitably formulated weak value enables this direct test. The measurement of the weak value of a path-qubit observable in a ne…
This paper considers states on the Weyl algebra of the canonical commutation relations over the phase space R^{2n}. We show that a state is regular iff its classical limit is a countably additive Borel probability measure on R^{2n}. It follows that one can "reduce" the state space of the Weyl algebra by altering the collection of quantum mechanical observables so that all states are ones whose classical limit is physical.
We determine the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator where the coordinates and momenta are assumed to obey the modified commutation relations [x_i,p_j]=i hbar[(1+ beta p^2) delta_{ij} + beta' p_i p_j]. These commutation relations are motivated by the fact they lead to the minimal length uncertainty relations which appear in perturbative string theory. Our solutions illustrate how certain features of string theory may manifest themselves in simple quantum mechanical systems through the modification of the canonical commutation relations. We discuss whether such effe…
Dirac's identification of the quantum analog of the Poisson bracket with the commutator is reviewed, as is the threat of self-inconsistent overdetermination of the quantization of classical dynamical variables which drove him to restrict the assumption of correspondence between quantum and classical Poisson brackets to embrace only the Cartesian components of the phase space vector. Dirac's canonical commutation rule fails to determine the order of noncommuting factors within quantized classical dynamical variables, but does imply the quantum/classical correspondence of Poisson brackets betwee…
The time operator, an operator which satisfies the canonical commutation relation with the Hamiltonian, is investigated, on the basis of a certain algebraic relation for a pair of operators T and H, where T is symmetric and H self-adjoint. This relation is equivalent to the Weyl relation, in the case of self-adjoint T, and is satisfied by the Aharonov-Bohm time operator T_0 and the free Hamiltonian H_0 for the one-dimensional free-particle system. In order to see the qualitative properties of T_0, the operators T and H satisfying this algebraic relation are examined. In particular, it is shown…
Two generalizations of Kempf's quadratic canonical commutation relation in one dimension are considered. The first one is the most general quadratic commutation relation. The corresponding nonzero minimal uncertainties in position and momentum are determined and the effect on the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator in an electric field is studied. The second extension is a function-dependent generalization of the simplest quadratic commutation relation with only a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position. Such an uncertainty now becomes dependent on the average positio…
We re-derive the Schrödinger-Robertson uncertainty principle for the position and momentum of a quantum particle. Our derivation does not directly employ commutation relations, but works by reduction to an eigenvalue problem related to the harmonic oscillator, which can then be further exploited to find a larger class of constrained uncertainty relations. We derive an uncertainty relation under the constraint of a fixed degree of Gaussianity and prove that, remarkably, it is saturated by all eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator. This goes beyond the common knowledge that the (Gaussian) groun…
Despite the fact that it has been known since the time of Heisenberg that quantum operators obey a quantum version of Newton's laws, students are often told that derivations of quantum mechanics must necessarily follow from the Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formulations of mechanics. Here, we first derive the existing Heisenberg equations of motion from Newton's laws and the uncertainty principle using only the equations $F=\frac{dP}{dt}$, $P=m\frac{dV}{dt}$, and $\left[X,P\right]=i$. Then, a new expression for the propagator is derived that makes a connection between time evolution in quantum mec…
We derive the commutation relations for field strengthes of the non-Abelian gauge fields by requiring that the quantum mechanical equations of motion coincide with the classical field equations. The equations of motion with respect to time derivative coincide with the corresponding field equations, while those with respect to space derivatives agree with classical field equations if constraint equations are fulfilled. Using the uncertainty relations for field strengthes at the same times, which follows from the commutation relations, we estimate the energy gap of vacuum fluctuations in the lon…
We derive an uncertainty relation for two unitary operators which obey a commutation relation of the form UV=exp[i phi] VU. Its most important application is to constrain how much a quantum state can be localised simultaneously in two mutually unbiased bases related by a Discrete Fourier Transform. It provides an uncertainty relation which smoothly interpolates between the well known cases of the Pauli operators in 2 dimensions and the continuous variables position and momentum. This work also provides an uncertainty relation for modular variables, and could find applications in signal process…
We derive the relativistic energy spectrum for the modified Dirac equation by adding a harmonic oscillator potential where the coordinates and momenta are assumed to obey the commutation relation $\left[\hat{x},\hat{p}\right]=i\hbar\left(1+ηp^2\right)$. In the nonrelativistic limit, our results are in agreement with the ones obtained {previously}. Furthermore, the extension to the construction of creation and annihilation operators for the harmonic oscillators with minimal length uncertainty relation is presented. Finally, we show that the commutation relation of the $su(1, 1)\sim so(2,1)$ alg…
In this paper, the quantization and generalized uncertainty relation for some quantum deformed algebras are investigated. For several deformed algebras, the commutation relation between the position and the momentum operator is shown to be the same as the one in the Planck scale deformed quantum mechanics.
We study the Schrödinger-Robertson uncertainty relations in an algebraic framework. Moreover, we show that some specific commutation relations imply new equalities, which are regarded as equality versions of well-known inequalities such as Hardy's inequality.
It is noted that the single-variable Heisenberg commutation relation contains the symmetry of the $Sp(2)$ group which is isomorphic to the Lorentz group applicable to one time-like dimension and two space-like dimensions, known as the $O(2,1)$ group. According to Paul A. M. Dirac, from the uncertainty commutation relations for two variables, it possible to construct the de Sitter group $O(3,2)$, namely the Lorentz group applicable to three space-like variables and two time-like variables. By contracting one of the time-like variables in $O(3,2)$, it is possible, to construct the inhomogeneous …
Entropic uncertainty relations for the position and momentum within the generalized uncertainty principle are examined. Studies of this principle are motivated by the existence of a minimal observable length. Then the position and momentum operators satisfy the modified commutation relation, for which more than one algebraic representation is known. One of them is described by auxiliary momentum so that the momentum and coordinate wave functions are connected by the Fourier transform. However, the probability density functions of the physically true and auxiliary momenta are different. As the …
We investigate time operators in the context of quantum time crystals in ring systems. A generalized commutation relation called the generalized weak Weyl relation is used to derive a class of self-adjoint time operators for ring systems with a periodic time evolution: The conventional Aharonov-Bohm time operator is obtained by taking the infinite-radius limit. Then, we discuss the connection between time operators, time crystals and real-space topology. We also reveal the relationship between our time operators and a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric time operator. These time operators are then used t…
We show how the Schroedinger Uncertainty Relation for a pair of observables can be deduced using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality plus successive applications of the commutation relation involving the two observables. Our derivation differs from the original one in the sense that we do not need the expansion of the product of these two observables in a sum of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical operators.
We generalize entanglement detection with covariance matrices for an arbitrary set of observables. A generalized uncertainty relation is constructed using the covariance and commutation matrices, then a criterion is established by performing a partial transposition on the operators. The method is highly efficient and versatile in the sense that the set of measurement operators can be freely chosen, do not need to be complete, and there is no constraint on the commutation relations. The method is particularly suited for systems with higher dimensionality since the computations do not scale with…
Three dimensional Dirac oscillator was considered in deformed space obeyed to deformed commutation relations known as Snyder-de Sitter algebra. Snyder-de Sitter commutation relations gives rise to appearance minimal uncertainty in position as well as in momentum. To derive energy spectrum and wavefunctions of the Dirac oscillator supersymmetric quantum mechanics and shape invariance technique was applied.
Since Renes et al. [J. Math. Phys. 45, 2171 (2004)], there has been much effort in the quantum information community to prove (or disprove) the existence of symmetric informationally complete (SIC) sets of quantum states in arbitrary finite dimension. This paper strengthens the urgency of this question by showing that if SIC-sets exist: 1) by a natural measure of orthonormality, they are as close to being an orthonormal basis for the space of density operators as possible, and 2) in prime dimensions, the standard construction for complete sets of mutually unbiased bases and Weyl-Heisenberg cov…
In quantum mechanics with minimal length uncertainty relations the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator is a deformed SU(1,1) algebra. The eigenvalues and eigenstates are constructed algebraically and they form the infinite-dimensional representation of the deformed SU(1,1) algebra. Our construction is independent of prior knowledge of the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation of the model. The approach can be generalized to the $D$-dimensional oscillator with non-commuting coordinates.
In this paper we consider two kinds of noncommutative space-time commutation relations in two-dimensional configuration space and feature the absolute value of the minimal length from the generalized uncertainty relations associated to the particular commutation relations. We study the problem of the two-dimensional gravitational quantum well in the new Hermitian variables and confront the experimental results for the first lowest energy state of the neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field to estimate the upper bounds on the noncommutativity parameters. The absolute value of the minimum le…
The standard C*-algebraic version of the algebra of canonical commutation relations, the Weyl algebra, frequently causes difficulties in applications since it neither admits the formulation of physically interesting dynamical laws nor does it incorporate pertinent physical observables such as (bounded functions of) the Hamiltonian. Here a novel C*-algebra of the canonical commutation relations is presented which does not suffer from such problems. It is based on the resolvents of the canonical operators and their algebraic relations. The resulting C*-algebra, the resolvent algebra, is shown to…
In the framework of the generalized uncertainty principle, the position and momentum operators obey the modified commutation relation $[X,P]=i\hbar\left(1+βP^2\right)$ where $β$ is the deformation parameter. Since the validity of the uncertainty relation for the Shannon entropies proposed by Beckner, Bialynicki-Birula, and Mycieslki (BBM) depends on both the algebra and the used representation, we show that using the formally self-adjoint representation, i.e., $X=x$ and $P=\tan\left(\sqrtβp\right)/\sqrtβ$ where $[x,p]=i\hbar$, the BBM inequality is still valid in the form $S_x+S_p\geq1+\lnπ$ a…
In this short note we show how the Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) and the Extended Uncertainty Principle (EUP), two of the most common generalised uncertainty relations proposed in the quantum gravity literature, can be derived within the context of canonical quantum theory, without the need for modified commutation relations. A GUP-type relation naturally emerges when the standard position operator is replaced by an appropriate Positive Operator Valued Measure (POVM), representing a finite-accuracy measurement that localises the quantum wave packet to within a spatial region $σ_g > 0…
We investigate properties of the covariance matrix in the framework of non-commutative quantum mechanics for an one-parameter family of transformations between the familiar Heisenberg-Weyl algebra and a particular extension of it. Employing as a measure of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle the linear symplectic capacity of the Weyl ellipsoid (and its dual), we determine its corresponding bounds. Inequalities between the capacities for non-commutative phase-spaces are established. We also present a constructive example based on a simple model to justify our theoretical predictions…
The Weyl correspondence and the related Wigner formalism lie at the core of traditional quantum mechanics. We discuss here an alternative quantization scheme, whose idea goes back to Born and Jordan, and which has recently been revived in another context, namely time-frequency analysis. We show that in particular the uncertainty principle does not enjoy full symplectic covariance properties in the Born and Jordan scheme, as opposed to what happens in the Weyl quantization.
We propose a new method for generating generalised uncertainty relations (GURs) including the generalised uncertainty principle (GUP), extended uncertainty principle (EUP), and extended generalised uncertainty principle (EGUP), previously proposed in the quantum gravity literature, without modifying the Heisenberg algebra. Our approach is compatible with the equivalence principle, and with local Poincar{\' e} invariance in the relativistic limit, thus circumventing many of the problems associated with GURs derived from modified commutation relations. In particular, it does not require the exis…
We consider the possible quantum effect for infinite systems produced by variations of the Planck's constant. Using the algebraic formulation of quantum theory we study behaviour of states $ω$ defined as positive, normalized functionals on the canonical commutation relations algebra (CCR-algebra) under the changes of the defining relations of the CCR. These defining relations of the multiplication in the CCR-algebra depend explicitly on the value of the Planck's constant. We analyse to what extend changes of the $\hbar$ preserve the original state space (this gives restrictions on the admissib…
A generalized uncertainty principle is obtained from a conformally transformed action containing a scalar field and a unique constraint. The constraint's Lagrange multiplier is found to obey a relativistic diffusion equation transforming the internal coordinates of the scalar field, via the shift theorem. For an approximately conserved Noether current, the coupled wave- and diffusion-like equations are merged into an infinite-order partial differential equation (PDE). It is conjectured that infrared and ultraviolet divergences are naturally removed in studying the infinite-order PDE's correspo…
This is an expositary article telling a short story made from the leaves of quantum probability with the following ingredients: (i) A special projective, unitary, irreducible and factorizable representation of the euclidean group of a Hilbert space known as the Weyl representation. \item The infinitesimal version of the Weyl representation includes the Heisenberg canonical commutation relations (CCR) of quantum theory. It also yields the three fundamental operator fields known as the creation, conservation and annihilation fields. (ii) The three fundamental fields, with the inclusion of time, …
The possibility of the existence of small correction terms to the canonical commutation relations and the uncertainty relations has recently found renewed interest. In particular, such correction terms could induce finite lower bounds $Δx_0, Δp_0$ to the resolution of distances and/or momenta. I review a general framework for the path integral formulation of quantum field theories on such generalised geometries, and focus then on the mechanisms by which $Δp_0>0$, and/or $Δx_0>0$ lead to IR and/or UV regularisation.
Motivated by several approaches to quantum gravity, there is a considerable literature on generalised uncertainty principles particularly through modification of the canonical position-momentum commutation relations. Some of these modified relations are also consistent with general principles that may be supposed of any physical theory. Such modified commutators have significant observable consequences. Here we study the noisy behaviour of an optomechanical system assuming a certain commonly studied modified commutator. From recent observations of radiation pressure noise in tabletop optomecha…
We consider a non-canonical phase-space deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra that was recently introduced in the context of quantum cosmology. We prove the existence of minimal uncertainties for all pairs of non-commuting variables. We also show that the states which minimize each uncertainty inequality are ground states of certain positive operators. The algebra is shown to be stable and to violate the usual Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl inequality for position and momentum. The techniques used are potentially interesting in the context of time-frequency analysis.
A concise derivation of all uncertainty relations is given entirely within the context of phase-space quantization, without recourse to operator methods, to the direct use of Weyl's correspondence, or to marginal distributions of x and p.
We analyze the position and momentum uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator in the context of a deformed quantum mechanics, namely, that in which the commutator between the position and momentum operators is given by [x,p]=i\hbar(1+βp^2). This deformed commutation relation leads to the minimal length uncertainty relation Δx > (\hbar/2)(1/Δp +βΔp), which implies that Δx ~ 1/Δp at small Δp while Δx ~ Δp at large Δp. We find that the uncertainties of the energy eigenstates of the normal harmonic oscillator (m>0), derived in Ref. [1], only populate the Δx ~ 1/Δp branch.…

We calculate the uncertainties in the position and momentum of a particle in the 1D potential V(x)=F|x|, F>0, when the position and momentum operators obey the deformed commutation relation [x,p]=i\hbar(1+βp^2), β>0. As in the harmonic oscillator case, which was investigated in a previous publication, the Hamiltonian H_1 = p^2/2m + F|x| admits discrete positive energy eigenstates for both positive and negative mass. The uncertainties for the positive mass states behave as Δx ~ 1/Δp as in the β=0 limit. For the negative mass states, however, in contrast to the harmonic oscillator case where we …
How does charge density constrain many-body wavefunctions in nature? The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem for non-relativistic, interacting many-body Schrödinger systems is well-known and was proved using \emph{reductio-ad-absurdum}; however, the physical mechanism or principle which enables this theorem in nature has not been understood. Here, we obtain effective canonical operators in the interacting many-body problem -- (i) the local electric field, which mediates interaction between particles, and contributes to the potential energy; and (ii) the particle momenta, which contribute to the kinetic ene…
We introduce a new set of noncommutative space-time commutation relations in two space dimensions. The space-space commutation relations are deformations of the standard flat noncommutative space-time relations taken here to have position dependent structure constants. Some of the new variables are non-Hermitian in the most natural choice. We construct their Hermitian counterparts by means of a Dyson map, which also serves to introduce a new metric operator. We propose PTlike symmetries, i.e.antilinear involutory maps, respected by these deformations. We compute minimal lengths and momenta ari…
We outline a new model in which generalised uncertainty relations are obtained without modified commutation relations. While existing models introduce modified phase space volumes for the canonical degrees of freedom, we introduce new degrees of freedom for the background geometry. The phase space is therefore enlarged but remains Euclidean. The spatial background is treated as a genuinely quantum object, with an associated state vector, and the model naturally gives rise to the extended generalised uncertainty principle (EGUP). Importantly, this approach solves (or rather, evades) well known …
