A generalized uncertainty principle is obtained from a conformally transformed action containing a scalar field and a unique constraint. The constraint's Lagrange multiplier is found to obey a relativistic diffusion equation transforming the internal coordinates of the scalar field, via the shift theorem. For an approximately conserved Noether current, the coupled wave- and diffusion-like equations are merged into an infinite-order partial differential equation (PDE). It is conjectured that infrared and ultraviolet divergences are naturally removed in studying the infinite-order PDE's corresponding propagator. It is further suggested that higher-order contributions of the associated commutation relations are reminiscent of a self-interaction not present in the current quantum theory.
We construct a quantum theory of free fermion field based on the generalized uncertainty principle using supersymmetry as a guiding principle. A supersymmetric field theory with a real scalar field and a Majorana fermion field is given explicitly and we also find that the supersymmetry algebra is deformed from an usual one.
Dependency on the preparation of state for the Heisenberg uncertainty principle can be removed with the help of entropy uncertainty principle. The shortness of the uncertainty principle (UP) can be overcome with the help of the concept of Shannon's information entropy (SE). In this article, we have shown that UP in terms of SE holds for a position-dependent effective mass system. We have considered the Dirac system with a mass-jump at the origin. We have proved the existence of a lower bound for a UP for this position-dependent effective mass.
A more general measurement disturbance uncertainty principle is presented in a Robertson-Schrödinger formulation. It is shown that it is stronger and having nicer properties than Ozawa's uncertainty relations. In particular is invariant under symplectic transformations. One shows also that there are states of the probe (measuring device) that saturate the matrix formulation of measurement disturbance uncertainty principle.
In this work we derive a matrix formulation of a noise-disturbance uncertainty relation, which is akin to the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle. Our inequality is stronger than Ozawa's uncertainty principle and takes noise-disturbance correlations into account. Moreover, we show that, for certain types of measurement interactions, it is covariant with respect to linear symplectic transformations of the noise and disturbance operators.
The non-relativistic quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) is examined in $D$-dimensional free particle and harmonic oscillator systems. The Feynman propagators for these systems are exactly derived within the first order of the GUP parameter.
We explore the modification of the entropic formulation of uncertainty principle in quantum mechanics which measures the incompatibility of measurements in terms of Shannon entropy. The deformation in question is the type so called generalized uncertainty principle that is motivated by thought experiments in quantum gravity and string theory and is characterized by a parameter of Planck scale. The corrections are evaluated for small deformation parameters by use of the Gaussian wave function and numerical calculation. As the generalized uncertainty principle has proven to be useful in the stud…
The uncertainty principle lies at the heart of quantum physics, and is widely thought of as a fundamental limit on the measurement precisions of incompatible observables. Here we show that the traditional uncertainty relation in fact belongs to the leading order approximation of a generalized uncertainty relation. That is, the leading order linear dependence of observables gives the Heisenberg type of uncertainty relations, while higher order nonlinear dependence may reveal more different and interesting correlation properties. Applications of the generalized uncertainty relation and the high …
It is shown that polymer quantization leads to a modified uncertainty principle similar to that obtained from string theory and non-commutative geometry. When applied to quantum field theory on general background spacetimes, corrections to the uncertainty principle acquire a metric dependence. For Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology this translates to a scale factor dependence which gives a large effect in the early universe.
Heisenberg showed in the early days of quantum theory that the uncertainty principle follows as a direct consequence of the quantization of electromagnetic radiation in the form of photons. As we show here the gravitational interaction of the photon and the particle being observed modifies the uncertainty principle with an additional term. From the modified or gravitational uncertainty principle it follows that there is an absolute minimum uncertainty in the position of any particle, of order of the Planck length. A modified uncertainty relation of this form is a standard result of superstring…
We consider Uncertainty Principles which take into account the role of gravity and the possible existence of extra spatial dimensions. Explicit expressions for such Generalized Uncertainty Principles in 4+n dimensions are given and their holographic properties investigated. In particular, we show that the predicted number of degrees of freedom enclosed in a given spatial volume matches the holographic counting only for one of the available generalizations and without extra dimensions.
Several models of quantum gravity predict the emergence of a minimal length at Planck scale. This is commonly taken into consideration by modifying the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle into the Generalized Uncertainty Principle. In this work, we study the implications of a polynomial Generalized Uncertainty Principle on the harmonic oscillator. We revisit both the analytic and algebraic methods, deriving the exact form of the generalized Heisenberg algebra in terms of the new position and momentum operators. We show that the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions are affected in a non-trivial way.…
One of the common features in all promising candidates of quantum gravity is the existence of a minimal length scale, which naturally emerges with a generalized uncertainty principle, or equivalently a modified commutation relation. Schwinger's quantum action principle was modified to incorporate this modification, and was applied to the calculation of the kernel of a free particle, partly recovering the result previously studied using path integral.
In this paper, we will incorporation the generalized uncertainty principle into field theories with Lifshitz scaling. We will first construct both bososnic and fermionic theories with Lifshitz scaling based on generalized uncertainty principle. After that we will incorporate the generalized uncertainty principle into an non-abelian gauge theory with Lifshitz scaling. We will observe that even though the action for this theory is non-local, it is invariant under local gauge transformations. We will also perform the stochastic quantization of this Lifshitz fermionic theory based generalized unce…
In this letter, we compute the corrections to the Cardy-Verlinde formula of $d-$dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. These corrections stem from the generalized uncertainty principle. Then we show, one can taking into account the generalized uncertainty principle corrections of the Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula by just redefining the Virasoro operator $L_0$ and the central charge $c$.
In this letter, we will demonstrate that the breaking of supersymmetry by a non-anticommutative deformation can be used to generate the generalized uncertainty principle. We will analyse the physical reasons for this observation, in the framework of string theory. We also discuss the relation between the generalized uncertainty principle and the Lee-Wick field theories.
In this paper we propose a way of determining the subleading corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy by considering a modified generalized uncertainty principle with two parameters. In the context of modified generalized uncertainty principle, coefficients of the correction terms of black hole entropy are written in terms of combination of the parameters. We also calculate corrections to the Stefan-Boltzman law of Hawking radiation corresponding to modified generalized uncertainty principle. By comparing the entropy with one from black holes in string theory compactified on a …
We construct a quantum theory of free scalar field in 1+1 dimensions based on a `Generalized Uncertainty Principle'. Both canonical and path integral formalism are employed. Higher dimensional extension is easily performed in the path integral formalism.
We show that a possible violation of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle may signal the existence of a deformation of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. More precisely, we prove that any Gaussian in phase-space (even if it violates the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle) is always a quantum state of an appropriate non-commutative extension of quantum mechanics. Conversely, all canonical non-commutative extensions of quantum mechanics display states that violate the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle.
In this paper, we have investigated the thermodynamics of Schwarzschild black holes using the symmetric generalized uncertainty principle which contains correction terms involving momentum and position uncertainty. We obtain the mass-temperature relation and the heat capacity of the black hole using which we compute the critical and remnant masses. The entropy is found to satisfy the area law upto leading order corrections from the symmetric generalized uncertainty principle.
In this paper we study the modification of thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black hole in the framework of generalized uncertainty principle with correction terms upto fourth order in momentum uncertainty. The mass-temperature relation and the heat capacity for these black holes have been investigated. These have been used to obtain the critical and remnant masses. The entropy expression using this generalized uncertainty principle reveals the area law upto leading order logarithmic corrections and subleading corrections of the form $\frac{1}{A^n}$. The mass out…
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle is known to be connected to the entropic uncertainty principle. This correspondence is obtained employing a Gaussian probability distribution for wave functions associated to the Shannon entropy. Independently, due to quantum gravity effects the Heisenberg uncertainty principle has been extended to a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). In this work, we show that GUP has been derived from considering non-extensive entropies, proposed by one of us. We found that the deformation parameters associated with $S_{+}$ and $S_-$ entropies are negative and posit…
Various theories of quantum gravity predict the existence of a minimum length scale, which leads to the modification of the standard uncertainty principle to the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). In this paper, we study two forms of the GUP and calculate their implications on the energy of the harmonic oscillator and the Hydrogen atom more accurately than previous studies. In addition, we show how the GUP modifies the Lorentz force law and the time-energy uncertainty principle.
Starting from topological quantum field theory, we derive space-time uncertainty relation with respect to the time interval and the spatial length proposed by Yoneya through breakdown of topological symmetry in the large N matrix model. This work suggests that the topological symmetry might be an underlying higher symmetry behind the space-time uncertainty principle of string theory.
In this note further evidence is collected in support of the claim that the space-time uncertainty principle implies holography, both within the context of Matrix Theory and the framework of the proposed duality between certain conformal field theories and M-theory/string theory on AdS backgrounds.
Various models of quantum gravity suggest a modification of the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, to the so-called Generalized Uncertainty Principle, between position and momentum. In this work we show how this modification influences the theory of angular momentum in Quantum Mechanics. In particular, we compute Planck scale corrections to angular momentum eigenvalues, the Hydrogen atom spectrum, the Stern-Gerlach experiment and the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. We also examine effects of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle on multi-particle systems.
We investigate the relationship between the generalized uncertainty principle in quantum gravity and the quantum deformation of the Poincaré algebra. We find that a deformed Newton-Wigner position operator and the generators of spatial translations and rotations of the deformed Poincaré algebra obey a deformed Heisenberg algebra from which the generalized uncertainty principle follows. The result indicates that in the $κ$-deformed Poincaré algebra a minimal observable length emerges naturally.
The extended commutation relations for a generalized uncertainty principle have been based on the assumption of the minimal length in position. Instead of this assumption, we start with a constrained Hamiltonian system described by the conventional Poisson algebra and then impose appropriate second class constraints to this system. Consequently, we can show that the consistent Dirac brackets for this system are nothing but the extended commutation relations describing the generalized uncertainty principle.
Recently, the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle has been extended to incorporate the existence of a large (cut-off) length scale in de Sitter or anti-de Sitter space, and the Hawking temperatures of the Schwarzshild-(anti) de Sitter black holes have been reproduced by using the extended uncertainty principle. I generalize the extended uncertainty to the case with an absolute minimum length and compute its modification to the Hawking temperature. I obtain a general trend that the generalized uncertainty principle due to the absolute minimum length ``always'' increases the Hawking temperature, …
We show that a deformation of the Heisenberg algebra which depends on a dimensionful parameter $κ$ is the algebraic structure which underlies the generalized uncertainty principle in quantum gravity. The deformed algebra and therefore the form of the generalized uncertainty principle are fixed uniquely by rather simple assumptions. The string theory result is reproduced expanding our result at first order in $Δp/M_{\rm PL}$. We also briefly comment on possible implications for Lorentz invariance at the Planck scale.
The Generalized Uncertainty Principle and the related minimum length are normally considered in non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics. Extending it to relativistic theories is important for having a Lorentz invariant minimum length and for testing the modified Heisenberg principle at high energies. In this paper, we formulate a relativistic Generalized Uncertainty Principle. We then use this to write the modified Klein-Gordon, Schrödinger and Dirac equations, and compute quantum gravity corrections to the relativistic hydrogen atom, particle in a box, and the linear harmonic oscillator.
It is often argued that quantum gravitational correction to the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle leads to, among other things, a black hole remnant with finite temperature. However, such a generalized uncertainty principle also seemingly removes the Chandrasekhar limit, i.e., it permits white dwarfs to be arbitrarily large, which is at odds with astrophysical observations. We show that this problem can be resolved if the parameter in the generalized uncertainty principle is negative. We also discuss the Planck scale physics of such a model.
The scattering cross section of electrons in noble gas atoms exhibits a minimum value at electron energies of approximately 1eV. This is the Ramsauer-Townsend effect. In this letter, we study the Ramsauer-Townsend effect in the framework of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle.
We further the investigation on the Parikh-Kraus-Wilczeck tunneling radiation of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole under the generalized uncertainty principle. We obtain the entropy difference involving the influence from the inequality. The two terms as generalizations of the Heisenberg's uncertainty promote or retard the emission of this kind of black holes respectively.
When gravitation is combined with quantum theory, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle could be extended to the generalized uncertainty principle accompanying a minimal length. To see how the generalized uncertainty principle works in the context of black hole complementarity, we calculate the required energy to duplicate information for the Schwarzschild black hole. It shows that the duplication of information is not allowed and black hole complementarity is still valid even assuming the generalized uncertainty principle. On the other hand, the generalized uncertainty principle with the minim…
Inspired by string theory, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle can be generalized to include the photon-electron gravitational interaction, which leads to the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). Although GUP considers gravitational uncertainty at the minimum fundamental length scale in physics, it does not consider the effects of spacetime curvature on quantum mechanical uncertainty relations. The Extended Uncertainty Principle (EUP) is a generalization of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle that, unlike the GUP, applies to large length scales. GEUP is also a linear combination of EUP and G…

The rate of Schwinger pair production due to an external electric field can be derived heuristically from the uncertainty principle. In the presence of a cosmological constant, it has been argued in the literature that the uncertainty principle receives a correction due to the background curvature, which is known as the "extended uncertainty principle" (EUP). We show that EUP does indeed lead to the correct result for Schwinger pair production rate in anti-de Sitter spacetime (the case for de Sitter spacetime is similar), provided that the EUP correction term is negative (positive for the de S…
