The properties of the time-of-arrival operator for free motion introduced by Aharonov and Bohm and of its self-adjoint variants are studied. The domains of applicability of the different approaches are clarified. It is shown that the arrival time of the eigenstates is not sharply defined. However, strongly peaked real-space (normalized) wave packets constructed with narrow Gaussian envelopes centred on one of the eigenstates provide an arbitrarily sharp arrival time.
A relativistic version of the Aharonov-Bohm time of arrival operator for spin-0 particles was constructed by Razavi in [Il Nuovo Cimento B \textbf{63}, 271 (1969)]. We study the operator in detail by taking its rigged Hilbert space extension. It is shown that the rigged Hilbert space extension of the operator provides more insights into the time of arrival problem that goes beyond Razavi's original results. This allows us to use time of arrival eigenfunctions that exhibit unitary arrival to construct time of arrival distributions. The expectation value is also calculated and shown that particl…
The weak equivalence principle (WEP) in the quantum regime has been the subject of many studies with a broad range of approach to the problem. Here we tackle the problem anew through the time of arrival (TOA) operator approach by constructing the time of arrival operator for a non-relativistic and structureless particle that is projected upward in a uniform gravitational field with an intended arrival point below the classical turning point. The TOA-operator is constructed under the constraint that the inertial and gravitational masses are equivalent, and that Galilean invariance is preserved.…
Quantum statistics is defined by Hilbert space products between the eigenstates associated with state preparation and measurement. The same Hilbert space products also describe the dynamics generated by a Hamiltonian when one of the states is an eigenstate of energy E and the other represents an observable B. In this paper, we investigate this relation between the observable time evolution of quantum systems and the coherence of Hilbert space products in detail. It is shown that the times of arrival for a specific value of B observed with states that have finite energy uncertainties can be use…
Even though foundations of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) are based on random matrix theory, physical Hamiltonians and observables substantially differ from random operators. One of the major challenges is to embed local integrals of motion (LIOMs) within the ETH. Here we focus on their impact on fluctuations and structure of the diagonal matrix elements of local observables. We first show that nonvanishing fluctuations entail the presence of LIOMs. Then we introduce a generic protocol to construct observables, subtracted by their projections on LIOMs as well as products of LIO…
We present a novel continuous-time control strategy to exponentially stabilize an eigenstate of a Quantum Non-Demolition (QND) measurement operator. In open-loop, the system converges to a random eigenstate of the measurement operator. The role of the feedback is to prepare a prescribed QND eigenstate with unit probability. To achieve this we introduce the use of Brownian motion to drive the unitary control actions; the feedback loop just adapts the amplitude of this Brownian noise input as a function of the system state. Essentially, it "shakes" the system away from undesired eigenstates by a…
We introduced with coauthors some years ago a solution to the problem of time in quantum gravity which consists in formulating the quantum theory in terms of real clocks. It combines Page and Wootters' relational proposal with Rovelli's evolving constants of the motion. Time is associated with an operator and not a classical parameter. We show here that this construction provides a natural solution to the time of arrival problem in quantum mechanics and leads to a well defined time-energy uncertainty relation for the clocks.
Quantum singular oscillator as a model of two-ion trap: an amplification of transition probabilities due to small time variations of the binding potential
The inverse problem of 'eigenstates-to-Hamiltonian' is considered for an open chain of $N$ quantum spins in the context of Many-Body-Localization. We first construct the simplest basis of the Hilbert space made of $2^N$ orthonormal Matrix-Product-States (MPS), that will thus automatically satisfy the entanglement area-law. We then analyze the corresponding $N$ Local Integrals of Motions (LIOMs) that can be considered as the local building blocks of these $2^N$ MPS, in order to construct the parent Hamiltonians that have these $2^N$ MPS as eigenstates. Finally we study the Matrix-Product-Operat…
In analogy to spontaneous breaking of continuous space translation symmetry in the process of space crystal formation, it was proposed that spontaneous breaking of continuous time translation symmetry could lead to time crystal formation. In other words, a time-independent system prepared in the energy ground state is expected to reveal periodic motion under infinitely weak perturbation. In the case of the system proposed originally by Frank Wilczek, spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry can not be observed if one starts with the ground state. We point out that the symmetry breakin…
It is shown that the time evolution of the squeezed and displaced state may be obtained by solving the Heisenberg equation of motion of an appropriate operator and finding the eigenstates of the time evolved operator. The connection between symplectic transformations and squeezing is explored.
