We study the scattering of two-level atoms at narrow laser fields, modeled by a $δ$-shape intensity profile. The unique properties of these potentials allow us to give simple analytic solutions for one or two field zones. Several applications are studied: a single $δ$-laser may serve as a detector model for atom detection and arrival-time measurements, either by means of fluorescence or variations in occupation probabilities. We show that, in principle, this ideal detector can measure the particle density, the quantum mechanical flux, arrival time distributions or local kinetic energy densities. Moreover, two spatially separated $δ$-lasers are used to investigate quantized-motion effects on Ramsey interferometry.
A one parameter solvable model for three bosons subject to delta function interactions in one-dimension with periodic boundary conditions is studied. The energy levels and wave functions are classified and given explicitly in terms of three momenta. In particular, eigenstates and eigenvalues are described as functions of the model parameter, c. Some of the states are given in terms of complex momenta and represent dimer or trimer configurations for large negative c. The asymptotic behaviour for small and large values of the parameter, and at thresholds between real and complex momenta is provi…
We propose an exactly solvable model for the two state curve crossing problems. Our model assumes the coupling to be a delta function. It is used to calculate the effect of curve crossing on electronic absorption spectrum and resonance Raman excitation profile.
A new approach in solution of simple quantum mechanical problems in deformed space with minimal length is presented. We propose the generalization of Schroëdinger equation in momentum representation on the case of deformed Heisenberg algebra with minimal length. Assuming that the kernel of potential energy operator do not change in the case of deformation, we obtain exact solution of eigenproblem of a particle in delta potential as well as double delta potential. Particle in Coulomb like potential is revisited and the problem of inversibility and hermicity of inverse coordinate operator is sol…
In our earlier papers we have proposed an analytically solvable model for the two state curve crossing problem which assumes the coupling to be a Dirac delta function. It is used to calculate the effect of curve crossing on electronic absorption spectrum and Resonance Raman excitation profile for the case of harmonic potentials. In this paper we have extended our model to deal with the curve crossing induced dissociation cases. Our method is used in this paper to calculate the effect of curve crossing induced dissociation on electronic absorption spectrum and Resonance Raman excitation profile…
Starting from few simple examples we have proposed a general method for finding an exact analytical solution for the two state scattering problem in presence of a delta function coupling. We have also extended our model to deal with general one dimensional multi-channel scattering problems.
We contemplate the pair of the purely imaginary delta-function potentials on a finite interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The two parameter model exhibits nicely the expected quantitative features of the unavoided level crossing and of a "phase-transition" complexification of the energies. Combining analytic and numerical techniques we investigate strength- and position-dependence of its spectrum.
We propose a simple method to calculate transition time in a two-state scattering problem, where two constant potentials are coupled by a delta function potential $V_{12}=V_{21}=k_0 δ(x)$. The exact analytical expression for the time of transition $τ$ is derived. We notice $τ$ explicitly depends on the second state's potential energy along with the incident energy and coupling strength. We also observe from the derived expression of $τ$ that depending on the initial energy, the coupling potential could behave like a transparent or opaque medium to the incident wave in a single state equivalent…
The Dirac delta function is widely used in many areas of physics and mathematics. Here we consider the generalization of a Dirac delta function to allow the use of complex arguments. We show that the properties of a generalized delta function are very different from those of a Dirac delta function and that they behave more like a pole in the complex plane. We use the generalized delta function to derive the Glauber-Sudarshan P-function for a Schrödinger cat state in a surprisingly simple form. Aside from their potential applications in classical electromagnetism and quantum optics, these resul…
Under certain conditions, the quantum delta-kicked harmonic oscillator displays quantum resonances. We consider an atom-optical realization of the delta-kicked harmonic oscillator, and present a theoretical discussion of the quantum resonances that could be observed in such a system. Having outlined our model of the physical system we derive the values at which quantum resonances occur and relate these to potential experimental parameters. We discuss the observable effects of the quantum resonances, using the results of numerical simulations. We develop a physical explanation for the quantum r…
We study the quantum behaviour of a particle moving in a one-dimensional double well potential. This double well is obtained by gluing together, at the origin, two shifted harmonic oscillator potentials. The Schrödinger equation is exactly solvable. The requirement that discontinuities, in the wavefunction and its first derivative, are absent at the origin, leads to the quantisation of the energy eigenvalues. We also show that oscillations in time take place between two nearby single harmonic oscillator ground states. Finally, the double well potential is augmented by a Dirac delta-function po…
We develop a method to determine the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of two-boson Hamiltonians include a wide class of quantum optical models. The quantum Hamiltonians have been transformed in the form of the one variable differential equation and the conditions for its solvability have been discussed. Applicability of the method is demonstrated on some simple physical systems.
We generalize the textbook Kronig-Penney model to realistic conditions for a quantum-particle moving in the quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) waveguide, where motion in the transverse direction is confined by a harmonic trapping potential. Along the waveguide, the particle scatters on an infinite array of regularized delta potentials. Our starting point is the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, which for quasi-1D geometry can be solved exactly, based on the analytical formula for the quasi-1D Green's function. We study the properties of eigen-energies as a function of particle quasi-momentum, which f…
We theoretically study electro-optic light modulation based on the quantum model where the linear electro-optic effect and the externally applied microwave field result in the interaction between optical cavity modes. The model assumes that the number of interacting modes is finite and effects of the mode overlapping coefficient on the strength of the intermode interaction can be taken into account through dependence of the coupling coefficient on the mode characteristics. We show that, under certain conditions, the model is exactly solvable and, in the semiclassical approximation where the mi…
We report an experimental investigation of momentum diffusion in the delta-function kicked rotor where time symmetry is broken by a two-period kicking cycle and spatial symmetry by an alternating linear potential. We exploit this, and a technique involving a moving optical potential, to create an asymmetry in the momentum diffusion that is due to the classical chaotic diffusion. This represents a realization of a type of Hamiltonian quantum ratchet.
We explore the possibility of modifying the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants developed originally to find exact solutions for time-dependent quantum mechanical systems for the situation in which an exact invariant can be constructed, but the subsequently resulting time-independent eigenvalue system is not solvable exactly. We propose to carry out this step in an approximate fashion, such as employing standard time-independent perturbation theory or the WKB approximation, and subsequently feeding the resulting approximated expressions back into the time-dependent scheme. We illustrate the …
Localization properties of non-interacting quantum particles in one-dimensional incommensurate lattices are investigated with an exponential short-range hopping that is beyond the minimal nearest-neighbor tight-binding model. Energy dependent mobility edges are analytically predicted in this model and verified with numerical calculations. The results are then mapped to the continuum Schrodinger equation, and an approximate analytical expression for the localization phase diagram and the energy dependent mobility edges in the ground band obtained.
We investigate a generalisation of the Rabi system in the Bargmann-Fock representation. In this representation the eigenproblem of the considered quantum model is described by a system of two linear differential equations with one independent variable. The system has only one irregular singular point at infinity. We show how the quantisation of the model is related to asymptotic behaviour of solutions in a vicinity of this point. The explicit formulae for the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the model follow from an analysis of the Stokes phenomenon. An interpretation of the obtained results in …
An exact analytical treatment of the dynamical problem for time-dependent 2x2 pseudo-hermitian su(1,1) Hamiltonians is reported. A class of exactly solvable and physically transparent new scenarios are identified within both classical and quantum contexts. Such a class is spanned by a positive parameter $ν$ that allows to distinguish two different dynamical regimes. Our results are usefully employed for exactly solving a classical propagation problem in a guided wave optics scenario. The usefulness of our procedure in a quantum context is illustrated by defining and investigating the su(1,1) "…
We consider the model of a single optical cavity mode interacting with two-level systems (spins) driven by a linearly time-dependent field. When this field passes through values at which spin energy level splittings become comparable to spin coupling to the optical mode, a cascade of Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions leads to co-flips of spins in exchange for photons of the cavity. We derive exact transition probabilities between different diabatic states induced by such a sweep of the field.
In this article, we study an exponential decay for the gas of bosons with strong repulsive delta interactions from a double-well potential. We consider an exactly solvable model comprising an infinite wall and two Dirac delta barriers. We explore its features both within the exact method and with the resonance expansion approach. The study reveals the effect of the splitting barrier on the decay rate in dependence on the number of particles. Among other things, we find that the effect of the splitting barrier on the decay rate is most pronounced in systems with odd particle numbers. During exp…
We experimentally verify the analytical expressions that exist for the diffusion rate in the quantum delta kicked rotor system for small numbers of kicks. We show development of diffusion resonances from two to five kicks, and of multiple resonances for high kick strengths. Furthermore, we show that, in contrast to classical predictions, the results are purely periodic in the kick period, and reproduce the predicted quantum- and diffusion resonances.
Non-hermitian, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians, experimentally realized in optical systems, accurately model the properties of open, bosonic systems with balanced, spatially separated gain and loss. We present a family of exactly solvable, two-dimensional, $\mathcal{PT}$ potentials for a non-relativistic particle confined in a circular geometry. We show that the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry threshold can be tuned by introducing a second gain-loss potential or its hermitian counterpart. Our results explicitly demonstrate that $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking in two dimensions has a rich phase diagram, …
We study in detail the relationship between the Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian of quantum optics and a family of quasi-exactly solvable Schrödinger equations. The connection between them is stablished through the biconfluent Heun equation. We found that each invariant $n$-dimensional subspace of Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian corresponds either to $n$ potentials, each with one known solution, or to one potential with $n$-known solutions. Among these Schrödinger potentials appear the quarkonium and the sextic oscillator.
Recent experimental advances enable the manipulation of quantum matter by exploiting the quantum nature of light. However, paradigmatic exactly solvable models, such as the Dicke, Rabi or Jaynes-Cummings models for quantum-optical systems, are scarce in the corresponding solid-state, quantum materials context. Focusing on the long-wavelength limit for the light, here, we provide such an exactly solvable model given by a tight-binding chain coupled to a single cavity mode via a quantized version of the Peierls substitution. We show that perturbative expansions in the light-matter coupling have …
We propose a scheme to demonstrate fractional statistics of anyons in an exactly solvable lattice model proposed by Kitaev that involves four-body interactions. The required many-body ground state, as well as the anyon excitations and their braiding operations, can be conveniently realized through \textit{dynamic}laser manipulation of cold atoms in an optical lattice. Due to the perfect localization of anyons in this model, we show that a quantum circuit with only six qubits is enough for demonstration of the basic braiding statistics of anyons. This opens up the immediate possibility of proof…
We consider a one dimensional interacting bose-fermi mixture with equal masses of bosons and fermions, and with equal and repulsive interactions between bose-fermi and bose-bose particles. Such a system can be realized in experiments with ultracold boson and fermion isotopes in optical lattices. We use the Bethe-ansatz technique to find the ground state energy at zero temperature for any value of interaction strength and density ratio between bosons and fermions. We prove that the mixture is always stable against demixing. Combining exact solution with the local density approximation we calcul…
We review the theoretical model and experimental realization of the atom optics $δ-$kicked rotor (AOKR), a paradigm of classical and quantum chaos. We have performed a number of experiments with an all-optical Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a periodic standing wave potential in an AOKR system. We discuss results of the investigation of the phenomena of quantum resonances in the AOKR. An interesting feature of the momentum distribution of the atoms obtained as a result of short pulses of light, is the variance of the momentum distribution or the kinetic energy $<p^{2}>/2m$ in units of the re…
