Particle systems admit a variety of tensor product structures (TPSs) depending on the complete system of commuting observables chosen for the analysis. Different notions of entanglement are associated with these different TPSs. Global symmetry transformations and dynamical transformations factor into products of local unitary operators with respect to certain TPSs and not with respect to others. Symmetry-invariant and dynamical-invariant TPSs and corresponding measures of entanglement are defined for particle scattering systems.
We provide a new extension of entanglement witnesses for $\mathbb{C}^{d_{1}}\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_{2}}$ systems. Our construction preserves the properties of indecomposability and spanning property of entanglement witnesses. We show how our concept of extended entanglement witnesses is connected with the idea of measurement device independent entanglement witnesses.
We propose an entanglement tensor to compute the entanglement of a general pure multipartite quantum state. We compare the ensuing tensor with the concurrence for bipartite state and apply the tensor measure to some interesting examples of entangled three-qubit and four-qubit states. It is shown that in defining the degree of entanglement of a multi-partite state, one needs to make assumptions about the willingness of the parties to cooperate. We also discuss the degree of entanglement of the multi-qubit $\ket{W_{M}}$-states.
Tensor eigenvalues and eigenvectors have been introduced in the recent mathematical literature as a generalization of the usual matrix eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We apply this formalism to a tensor that describes a multipartite symmetric state or a spin state, and we investigate to what extent the corresponding tensor eigenvalues contain information about the multipartite entanglement (or, equivalently, the classicality) of the state. This extends previous results connecting entanglement to spectral properties related to the state. While for spin-1 states the positivity of the smallest tens…
We revisit the genuine multipartite entanglement by a simplified method, which only involves the Schmidt decomposition and local unitary transformation. We construct a local unitary equivalent class of the tri-qubit quantum state, then use the trace norm of the whole correlation tensor as a measurement to detect genuine multipartite entanglement. By detailed examples, we show our result can detect more genuinely entangled states. Furthermore, we generalize the genuine multipartite entanglement criterion to tripartite higher-dimensional systems.
We present a development of a geometric approach to entanglement indicators. The method is applied to detect genuine multiqubit entanglement. The criteria are given in form of non-linear conditions imposed on correlation tensors. Thus they involve directly observable quantities, and in some cases require only few specific measurements to find multiqubit entanglement. The non-linearity of each of the criteria allows detection of entanglement in wide classes of states. In contrast to entanglement witnesses, which in the space of Hermitian operators define a hyperplane, the new conditions define …
We consider the problem of correct measurement of a quantum entanglement in the two-body electron-electron scattering. An expression is derived for a spin correlation tensor of a pure two-electron state. A geometrical measure of a quantum entanglement as the distance between two forms of this tensor in entangled and separable cases is presented. We prove that this measure satisfies properties of a valid entanglement measure: nonnegativity, discriminance, normalization, non-growth under local operations and classical communication. This measure is calculated for a problem of electron-electron s…
The geometric measure of entanglement for a symmetric pure state with nonnegative amplitudes has attracted much attention. On the other hand, the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors (hypermatrices) has been developed rapidly. In this paper, we show how the spectral theory of nonnegative tensors can be applied to the study of the geometric measure of entanglement for a pure state with nonnegative amplitudes. Especially, an elimination method for computing the geometric measure of entanglement for symmetric pure multipartite qubit or qutrit states with nonnegative amplitudes is given. For sym…
For multiqubit densities, the tensor of coherences (or Stokes tensor) is a real parameterization obtained by the juxtaposition of the affine Bloch vectors of each qubit. While it maintains the tensorial structure of the underlying space, it highlights the pattern of correlations, both classical and quantum, between the subsystems and, due to the affine parameterization, it contains in its components all reduced densities of all orders. The main purpose of our use of this formalism is to deal with entanglement. For example, the detection of bipartite entanglement is straightforward, as it is th…
The problem of the choice of tensor product decomposition in a system of two fermions with the help of Bogoliubov transformations of creation and annihilation operators is discussed. The set of physical states of the composite system is restricted by the superselection rule forbidding the superposition of fermions and bosons. It is shown that the Wootters concurrence is not proper entanglement measure in this case. The explicit formula for the entanglement of formation is found and its dependence on tensor product decompositions of the Hilbert space is discussed. It is shown that the set of se…
We show a similarity between two different classical simulation methods for measurement based quantum computation -- one relying on a low entanglement (tree tensor network) representation of the computer's state, and the other a tensor contraction method based on the topology of the graph state. We use this similarity to show that any quantum circuit that can be efficiently simulated via tensor contraction cannot produce much entanglement.
We show that the two notions of entanglement: the maximum of the geometric measure of entanglement and the maximum of the nuclear norm is attained for the same states. We affirm the conjecture of Higuchi-Sudberry on the maximum entangled state of four qubits. We introduce the notion of d-density tensor for mixed d-partite states. We show that d-density tensor is separable if and only if its nuclear norm is $1$. We suggest an alternating method for computing the nuclear norm of tensors. We apply the above results to symmetric tensors. We give many numerical examples.
{\bf Abstract.} We show that two hierarchies of spin Hamilton operators admit the same spectrum. Both Hamilton operators play a central role for quantum gates in particular for the case spin-$\frac12$ and the case spin-1. The spin-$\frac12$, spin-1, spin-$\frac32$ and spin-2 cases are studied in detail. Entanglement and mutually unbiased bases of the eigenvectors is discussed. Two triple Hamilton operators are also investigated. Both are also admitting the same spectrum.
We introduce a general framework for detecting genuine multipartite entanglement and non full-separability in multipartite quantum systems of arbitrary dimensions based on correlation tensors. Regarding genuine multipartite entanglement our conditions are comparable to previous approaches in the case of qubits while they show particular strength in the relatively unexplored case of higher dimensional systems. In the case of non-full separability our conditions prove to be advantageous in situations where more than two-body correlations are relevant, where most previous conditions turned out to…
Understanding the nature of multipartite entanglement is a central mission of quantum information theory. To this end, we investigate the question of tripartite entanglement convertibility. We find that there exists no easy criterion to determine whether a general tripartite transformation can be performed with a nonzero success probability and in fact, the problem is NP-hard. Our results are based on the connections between multipartite entanglement and tensor rank (also called Schmidt rank), a key concept in algebraic complexity theory. Not only does this relationship allow us to characteriz…
We study the rank of a general tensor $u$ in a tensor product $H_1\ot...\ot H_k$. The rank of $u$ is the minimal number $p$ of pure states $v_1,...,v_p$ such that $u$ is a linear combination of the $v_j$'s. This rank is an algebraic measure of the degree of entanglement of $u$. Motivated by quantum computation, we completely describe the rank of an arbitrary tensor in $(\C^2)^{\ot 3}$ and give normal forms for tensor states up to local unitary transformations. We also obtain partial results for $(\C^2)^{\ot 4}$; in particular, we show that the maximal rank of a tensor in $(\C^2)^{\ot 4}$ is eq…
Simulating quantum systems constructively furthers our understanding of qualitative and quantitative features which may be analytically intractable. In this letter, we directly simulate and explore the entanglement structure present in a paradigmatic example of quantum information: Shor's wavefunction. The methodology employed is a dynamical tensor network which is initially constructed as a tree tensor network, inspired by the modular exponentiation quantum circuit, and later efficiently mapped to a matrix product state. Utilizing the Schmidt number as a local entanglement metric, our constru…
Mathematical foundation of the novel concept of quantum tensor product by Zanardi et al is rigorously established. The concept of relative quantum entanglement is naturally introduced and its meaning is made clear both mathematically and physically. For a finite or an infinite dimensional vector space $W$ the so called tensor product partition (TPP) is introduced on $End(W)$, the set of endmorphisms of $W$, and a natural correspondence is constructed between the set of TPP's of $End(W)$ and the set of tensor product structures (TPS's) of $W$. As a byproduct, it is shown that an arbitrarily giv…
The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state $\ket{W_3}=\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}}(\ket{100}+\ket{010}+\ket{001})$ and its $N$-partite generalization $\ket{W_N}$. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of $\ket{W_3}$ has rank either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of $\ket{W_N}$ has…
We present a numerical strategy to efficiently estimate bipartite entanglement measures, and in particular the Entanglement of Formation, for many-body quantum systems on a lattice. Our approach exploits the Tree Tensor Operator tensor network ansatz, a positive loopless representation for density matrices which, as we demonstrate, efficiently encodes information on bipartite entanglement, enabling the up-scaling of entanglement estimation. Employing this technique, we observe a finite-size scaling law for the entanglement of formation in 1D critical lattice models at finite temperature for up…
Great advances have been achieved in studying characteristics of entanglement for fundamentals of quantum mechanics and quantum information processing. However, even for N-qubit systems, the problem of entanglement criterion has not been well solved. In this Letter, using the method of state decomposition and high order singular value decomposition (HOSVD), we propose a necessary and sufficient entanglement criterion for general N-qubit systems. As an example, we apply our method to study the multi-qubit W state with white noise. We not only obtain the separability critical point, which is tig…
This article proposes an efficient way of calculating the geometric measure of entanglement using tensor decomposition methods. The connection between these two concepts is explored using the tensor representation of the wavefunction. Numerical examples are benchmarked and compared. Furthermore, we search for highly entangled qubit states to show the applicability of this method.

The intuitiveness of the tensor network graphical language is becoming well known through its use in numerical simulations using methods from tensor network algorithms. Recent times have also seen rapid progress in developing equations of motion to predict the time evolution of quantum entanglement [Nature Physics, 4(\textbf{4}):99, 2008]. Here we cast these recent results into a tensor network framework and in doing so, construct a theory which exposes the topological equivalence of the evolution of a family of entanglement monotones in arbitrary dimensions. This unification was accomplished …
To define a minimal mathematical framework for isolating some of the characteristic properties of quantum entanglement, we introduce a generalization of the tensor product of graphs. Inspired by the notion of a density matrix, the generalization is a simple one: every graph can be obtained by addition modulo two, possibly with many summands, of tensor products of adjacency matrices. In this picture, we are still able to prove a combinatorial analogue of the Peres-Horodecki criterion for testing separability.
These lecture notes provide a brief overview of methods of entanglement theory applied to the study of quantum many-body systems, as well as of tensor network states capturing quantum states naturally appearing in condensed-matter systems.
Permutation symmetries of multipartite quantum states are defined only when the constituent subsystems are of equal dimensions. In this work we extend this notion of permutation symmetry to heterogeneous systems, that is, systems composed of subsystems having unequal dimensions. Given a tensor product space of $k$ subsystems (of arbitrary dimensions) and a permutation operation $σ$ over $k$ symbols, these states are such that they have identical decompositions (up to an overall phase) in the given tensor product space and the tensor product space obtained by the permuting the subsystems by $σ$…
We show that for the tensor product of an entanglement-breaking quantum channel with an arbitrary quantum channel, both the minimum entropy of an output of the channel and the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland capacity are additive. In addition, for the tensor product of two arbitrary quantum channels, we give a bound involving entanglement of formation for the amount of subadditivity (for minimum entropy output) or superadditivity (for channel capacity) that can occur.
We investigate the global-symmetry projections applied to the tensor network states from the view point of the entanglement entropy and the mutual information. The projections to the translational invariant space and to the total-$S^z$-zero space give logarithmically increasing mutual information with respect to the system size. In the anti-ferromagnetic $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain and lattice, the optimized energies become accurate numerically by using variational states of the projected tensor network states, because the projections reflecting symmetries of the ground states generate quantum en…
A tree tensor network variational method is proposed to simulate quantum many-body systems with global symmetries where the optimization is reduced to individual charge configurations. A computational scheme is presented, how to extract the entanglement spectra in a bipartite splitting of a loopless tensor network across multiple links of the network, by constructing a matrix product operator for the reduced density operator and simulating its eigenstates. The entanglement spectra of 2 x L, 3 x L and 4 x L with either open or periodic boundary conditions on the rungs are studied using the pres…
We investigate the entanglement spectrum in HOTRG ---tensor renormalization group (RG) method combined with the higher order singular value decomposition--- for two-dimensional (2D) classical vertex models. In the off-critical region, it is explained that the entanglement spectrum associated with the RG transformation is described by `doubling' of the spectrum of a corner transfer matrix. We then demonstrate that the doubling actually occurs for the square-lattice Ising model by HOTRG calculations up to $D = 64$, where $D$ is the cut-off dimension of tensors. At the critical point, we also fin…
We consider the scaling of entanglement entropy in random Projected Entangled Pairs States (PEPS) with an internal symmetry given by a finite group G. We systematically demonstrate a correspondence between this entanglement entropy and the difference of free energies of a classical Ising model with an addition non-local term. This non-local term counts the number of domain walls in a particular configuration of the classical spin model. We argue that for that overwhelming majority of such states, this gives rise to an area law scaling with well-defined topological entanglement entropy. The top…
In the paper, we give a characterization of arbitrary $n$-mode Gaussian coherence breaking channels (GCBCs) and show the tensor product of a GCBC and arbitrary a Gaussian channel maps all input states into product states. The inclusion relation among GCBCs, Gaussian positive partial transpose channels (GPPTC), entanglement breaking channels (GEBC) and Gaussian classical-quantum channels (GCQC) is displayed. Finally, we prove that Gaussian classical ($χ$-) capacity for the tensor products of GCBCs and arbitrary Gaussian channels is additive.
Tensor Network States (TNS) offer an efficient representation for the ground state of quantum many body systems and play an important role in the simulations of them. Numerous TNS are proposed in the past few decades. However, due to the high cost of TNS for two-dimensional systems, a balance between the encoded entanglement and computational complexity of TNS is yet to be reached. In this work we introduce a new Tree Tensor Network (TTN) based TNS dubbed as Fully- Augmented Tree Tensor Network (FATTN) by releasing the constraint in Augmented Tree Tensor Network (ATTN). When disentanglers are …
We compute the multipartite entanglement measures such as the global entanglement of various one- and two-dimensional quantum systems to probe the quantum criticality based on the matrix and tensor product states (MPSs/TPSs). We use infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) method to find the ground states numerically in the form of MPSs/TPSs, and then evaluate their entanglement measures by the method of tensor renormalization group (TRG). We find these entanglement measures can characterize the quantum phase transitions by their derivative discontinuity right at the critical points in …
We consider four norms on tensor product spaces that have appeared in quantum information theory and demonstrate duality relationships between them. We show that the product numerical radius is dual to the robustness of entanglement, and we similarly show that the S(k)-norm is dual to the projective tensor norm. We show that, analogous to how the product numerical radius and the S(k)-norm characterize k-block positivity of operators, there is a natural version of the projective tensor norm that characterizes Schmidt number. In this way we obtain an elementary new proof of the cross norm criter…
In this paper, an unextendible product basis and exact-entanglement bases of three qubit is given, and the properties of entanglement for exact-entanglement bases are also discussed. In addition, the bound entangled mixed state is obtained from the exact-entanglement bases.
This paper discusses ER = EPR, the hypothesis of Susskind and Maldacena that entangled black holes are connected by an Einstein-Rosen bridge, and that more generally, quantum entanglement is accompanied by topological connectivity. Given a background space and a quantum tensor network, we describe how to construct a new topological space, that welds the network and the background space together. This construction embodies the principle that quantum entanglement and topological connectivity are intimately related.
Anyonic systems are modeled by topologically protected Hilbert spaces which obey complex superselection rules restricting possible operations. These Hilbert spaces cannot be decomposed into tensor products of spatially localized subsystems, whereas the tensor product structure is a foundation of the standard entanglement theory. We formulate bipartite entanglement theory for pure anyonic states and analyze its properties as a non-local resource for quantum information processing. We introduce a new entanglement measure, asymptotic entanglement entropy (AEE), and show that it characterizes dist…

This study clarifies the proper criteria to assess the modeling capacity of a general tensor model. The work analyze the problem based on the study of tensor ranks, which is not a well-defined quantity for higher order tensors. To process, the author introduces the separability issue to discuss the Cannikin's law of tensor modeling. Interestingly, a connection between entanglement studied in information theory and tensor analysis is established, shedding new light on the theoretical understanding for modeling capacity problems.
In this paper the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic pseudo Hermitian coherent states (FPHCS) described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers is studied. The pseudo-Hermitian versions of the well known maximally entangled pure states such as Bell and GHZ, W and biseparable states are introduced through integrating over the tensor products of FPHCSs with suitable choice of Grassmannian weight functions. Meanwhile as an illustration, the method is applied to tensor product of 2 and 3 qubit pseudo Hermitian systems. Then the measures of concurrence and average entropy are applied to quantify th…
We elaborate on a previous proposal by Hartman and Maldacena on a tensor network which accounts for the scaling of the entanglement entropy in a system at a finite temperature. In this construction, the ordinary entanglement renormalization flow given by the class of tensor networks known as the Multi Scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA), is supplemented by an additional entanglement structure at the length scale fixed by the temperature. The network comprises two copies of a MERA circuit with a fixed number of layers and a pure matrix product state which joins both copies by entan…
Entanglement phase transitions in quantum chaotic systems subject to projective measurements and in random tensor networks have emerged as a new class of critical points separating phases with different entanglement scaling. We propose a mean-field theory of such transitions by studying the entanglement properties of random tree tensor networks. As a function of bond dimension, we find a phase transition separating area-law from logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy. Using a mapping onto a replica statistical mechanics model defined on a Cayley tree and the cavity method, we analyze …
Motivated by the novel applications of the mathematical formalism of quantum theory and its generalizations in cognitive science, psychology, social and political sciences, and economics, we extend the notion of the tensor product and entanglement. We also study the relation between conventional entanglement of complex qubits and our generalized entanglement. Our construction can also be used to describe entanglement in the framework of non-Archimedean physics. It is also possible to construct tensor products of non-Archimedean (e.g., $p$-adic) and complex Hilbert spaces.
Despite the fundamental importance of quantum entanglement in many-body systems, our understanding is mostly limited to bipartite situations. Indeed, even defining appropriate notions of multipartite entanglement is a significant challenge for general quantum systems. In this work, we initiate the study of multipartite entanglement in a rich, yet tractable class of quantum states called stabilizer tensor networks. We demonstrate that, for generic stabilizer tensor networks, the geometry of the tensor network informs the multipartite entanglement structure of the state. In particular, we show t…
We construct an entanglement measure that coincides with the generalized concurrence for a general pure bipartite state based on wedge product. Moreover, we construct an entanglement measure for pure multi-qubit states, which are entanglement monotone. Furthermore, we generalize our result on a general pure multipartite state.
We devise a method based on the tensor-network formalism to calculate genuine multisite entanglement in ground states of infinite spin chains containing spin-1/2 or spin-1 quantum particles. The ground state is obtained by employing an infinite time-evolving block decimation method acting upon an initial matrix product state for the infinite spin system. We explicitly show how such infinite matrix product states with translational invariance provide a natural framework to derive the generalized geometric measure, a computable measure of genuine multisite entanglement, in the thermodynamic limi…
