We revisit the adiabatic criterion in stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for the three-level $Λ$-system, and compare the situation with and without nonlinearity. In linear systems, the adiabatic condition is derived with the help of the instantaneous eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, a procedure that breaks down in the presence of nonlinearity. Using an explicit example relevant to photoassociation of atoms into diatomic molecules, we demonstrate that the proper way to derive the adiabatic condition for the nonlinear systems is through a linearization procedure.
We apply a flexible numerical integrator to the simulation of adiabatic quantum computation with nonlinear paths. We find that a nonlinear path may significantly improve the performance of adiabatic algorithms versus the conventional straight-line interpolations. The employed integrator is suitable for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for any qubit Hamiltonian. Its flexible storage format significantly reduces cost for storage and matrix-vector multiplication in comparison to common sparse matrix schemes.
We investigate the acceleration of an adiabatic process with the same survival probability of the ground state by sweeping a parameter nonlinearly, fast in the wide gap region and slow in the narrow gap region, as contrast to the usual linear sweeping. We find the expected acceleration in the Laudau-Zener tunneling model and in the adiabatic quantum computing model for factorizing the number N=21.
The dynamics of nonlinear systems qualitatively change depending on their parameters, which is called bifurcation. A quantum-mechanical nonlinear oscillator can yield a quantum superposition of two oscillation states, known as a Schrödinger cat state, via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point. Here we propose a quantum computer comprising such quantum nonlinear oscillators, instead of quantum bits, to solve hard combinatorial optimization problems. The nonlinear oscillator network finds optimal solutions via quantum adiabatic evolution, where nonlinear terms are increased s…
We propose a theoretical scheme to deterministically generate Fock states in a Kerr cavity thorough adiabatic variation of the driving field strength and the cavity detuning. We show that the required time to generate a $n$-photon Fock state scales as the square root of $n$. Requirements for the Kerr coefficient relative to the system decoherence rate are provided as a function of desired state fidelity, indicating that the scheme is potentially realizable with the present state of the art in microwave superconducting circuits.
Macroscopic cat states have been widely studied to illustrate fundamental principles of quantum physics as well as their application in quantum information processing. In this paper, we propose a quantum speedup method for adiabatic creation of cat states in a Kerr nonlinear resonator via gradient-descent optimal adiabatic control. By simultaneously adiabatic tuning the the cavity detuning and driving field strength, the width of minimum energy gap between the target trajectory and non-adiabatic trajectory can be widen, which allows us to speed up the evolution along the adiabatic path. Compar…
It has recently been shown that a parametrically driven oscillator with Kerr nonlinearity yields a Schrödinger cat state via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point and a network of such nonlinear oscillators can be used for solving combinatorial optimization problems by bifurcation-based adiabatic quantum computation [H. Goto, Sci. Rep. \textbf{6}, 21686 (2016)]. Here we theoretically show that such a nonlinear oscillator network with controllable parameters can also be used for universal quantum computation. The initialization is achieved by a quantum-mechanical bifurcation…
Quantum computers with Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) have recently been proposed by the author and others. Quantum computation using KPOs is based on quantum adiabatic bifurcations of the KPOs, which lead to quantum superpositions of coherent states, such as Schrodinger cat states. Therefore, these quantum computers are referred to as "quantum bifurcation machines (QbMs)." QbMs can be used for qauntum adiabatic optimization and universal quantum computation. Superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions, Josephson parametric oscillators (JPOs) in particular, are promising fo…
In this paper, we study two different nonlinear interpolating paths in adiabatic evolution algorithms for solving a particular class of quantum search problems where both the initial and final Hamiltonian are one-dimensional projector Hamiltonians on the corresponding ground state. If the overlap between the initial state and final state of the quantum system is not equal to zero, both of these models can provide a constant time speedup over the usual adiabatic algorithms by increasing some another corresponding "complexity". But when the initial state has a zero overlap with the solution stat…
We study dynamics of a two-color photoassociation of atoms into diatomic molecules via nonlinear Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) process. This system has a famous counterpart in (linear) quantum mechanics, and been discussed recently in the context of generalizing quantum adiabatic theorem to nonlinear systems. Here we use another approach to study adiabaticity and stability in the system: we apply methods of classical Hamiltonian dynamics. We found nonlinear dynamical instabilities, cases of complete integrability, and improved conditions of adiabaticity.
We investigate the Landau-Zener tunneling (LZT) of a self-interacting two-level system in which the coupling between the levels is nonreciprocal. In such a non-Hermitian system, when the energy bias between two levels is adjusted very slowly, i.e., in the adiabatic limit, we find that a quantum state can still closely follow the eigenstate solution until it encounters the exceptional points (EPs) at which two eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors coalesce. In the absence of the nonlinear self-interaction, we can obtain explicit expressions for the eigenvectors and eigenvalues and an…
We present a general theory for adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our theory not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates, but also characterizes the motion of non-eigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that in the adiabatic evolution of non-eigenstates, the Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions.
We first discuss the geometrical construction and the main mathematical features of the maximum-entropy-production/steepest-entropy-ascent nonlinear evolution equation proposed long ago by this author in the framework of a fully quantum theory of irreversibility and thermodynamics for a single isolated or adiabatic particle, qubit, or qudit, and recently rediscovered by other authors. The nonlinear equation generates a dynamical group, not just a semigroup, providing a deterministic description of irreversible conservative relaxation towards equilibrium from any non-equilibrium density operato…
Self-intersecting energy band structures in momentum space can be induced by nonlinearity at the mean-field level, with the so-called nonlinear Dirac cones as one intriguing consequence. Using the Qi-Wu-Zhang model plus power law nonlinearity, we systematically study in this paper the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase associated with an adiabatic process in the momentum space, with two adiabatic paths circling around one nonlinear Dirac cone. Interestingly, for and only for Kerr nonlinearity, the AB phase experiences a jump of $π$ at the critical nonlinearity at which the Dirac cone appears or disappea…
I'm presenting a new elegant formulation of the theory of fully nonlinear adiabatic TWM (FNA-TWM) in terms of elliptic function here. Note that the linear case of SFG and DFG in the undepleted pump approximation described by the FVH representation has been exploited several years ago. For the sake of completeness, I present the pseudo-FVH representation to describe OPA. Moreover, I'm trying to display an overview of TWM processes and show that both the linear cases, the linear adiabatic SFG(DFG) and the linear OPA, are only the special cases of my theory. Finally I also point out that the geom…
Numerous sufficient conditions for adiabaticity of the evolution of a driven quantum system have been known for quite a long time. In contrast, necessary adiabatic conditions are scarce. A practicable necessary condition well-suited for many-body systems has been proven recently in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 200401 (2017)]. Here we tailor this condition for estimating run times of quantum adiabatic algorithms. As an illustration, the condition is applied to the adiabatic algorithm for searching in an unstructured database (adiabatic Grover search algorithm). We find that thus obtained lower bound …
Conditions for the validity of the quantum adiabatic approximation are analyzed. For the case of linear Hamiltonians, a simple and general sufficient condition is derived, which is valid for arbitrary spectra and any kind of time variation. It is shown that in some cases the found condition is necessary and sufficient. The adiabatic theorem is generalized for the case of nonlinear Hamiltonians.
In this paper, we present an invariant perturbation theory of the adiabatic process based on the concepts of U(1)-invariant adiabatic orbit and U(1)-invariant adiabatic expansion. As its application, we propose and discuss new adiabatic approximation conditions.
We investigate the effect of nonlinearity in a system described by an adiabatically evolving Hamiltonian. Experiments are conducted in a three-core waveguide structure that is adiabatically varying with distance, in analogy to the STIRAP process in atomic physics. In the linear regime, the system exhibits an adiabatic power transfer between two waveguides which are not directly coupled, with negligible power recorded in the intermediate coupling waveguide. In the presence of nonlinearity the behavior of this configuration is drastically altered and the adiabatic light passage is found to criti…
A nonlinear Landau-Zener model was proposed recently to describe, among a number of applications, the nonadiabatic transition of a Bose-Einstein condensate between Bloch bands. Numerical analysis revealed a striking phenomenon that tunneling occurs even in the adiabatic limit as the nonlinear parameter $C$ is above a critical value equal to the gap $V$ of avoided crossing of the two levels. In this paper, we present analytical results that give quantitative account of the breakdown of adiabaticity by mapping this quantum nonlinear model into a classical Josephson Hamiltonian. In the critical r…
Recently, Marzlin and Sanders (2004) demonstrated an inconsistency when the adiabatic approximation was applied to specific, "inverse" time-evolving systems. Following that, Tong et al. (2005) showed that the widely used traditional adiabatic conditions are insufficient to guarantee the validity of the adiabatic approximation for this class of systems. In this article we explore the origin of these observations by a perturbative approach and find that in first order approximation certain nonzero terms appear in the solution which gives rise to the breakdown of the adiabatic approximation (desp…
The usual quantitative condition has been widely used in the practical applications of the adiabatic theorem. However, it had never been proved to be sufficient or necessary before. It was only recently found that the quantitative condition is insufficient, but whether it is necessary remains unresolved. In this letter, we prove that the quantitative condition is necessary in guaranteeing the validity of the adiabatic approximation.
In this paper, we present a U(1)-invariant expansion theory of the adiabatic process. As its application, we propose and discuss new sufficient adiabatic approximation conditions. In the new conditions, we find a new invariant quantity referred as quantum geometric potential (QGP) contained in all time-dependent processes. Furthermore, we also give detailed discussion and analysis on the properties and effects of QGP.
Recently, the authors of Ref.1[arXiv:1004.3100] claimed that they have proven the traditional adiabatic condition is a necessary condition. Here, it is claimed that there are some mistakes and an artificial over-strong constraint in [1], making its result inconvincible.
The adiabatic approximation exhibits wide applicability in quantum mechanics, providing a simple approach for nontransitional dynamics in quantum systems governed by slowly varying time-dependent Hamiltonians. However, the standard adiabatic theorem is specifically derived for closed quantum systems. In a realistic open system scenario, the inevitable system-reservoir interaction must be taken into account, which strongly impacts the generalization of the adiabatic behavior. In this paper, we introduce sufficient conditions for the adiabatic approximation in open quantum systems. These conditi…
The condition for adiabatic approximation are of basic importance for the applications of the adiabatic theorem. The traditional quantitative condition was found to be necessary but not sufficient, but we do not know its physical meaning and the reason why it is necessary from the physical point of view. In this work, we relate the adiabatic theorem to the uncertainty relation, and present a clear physical picture of the traditional quantitative condition. It is shown that the quantitative condition is just the amplitude of the probability of transition between two levels in the time interval …
We give a sufficient condition for the quantum adiabatic approximation, which is quantitative and can be used to estimate error caused by this approximation. We also discuss when the traditional condition is sufficient.
We decompose the quantum adiabatic evolution as the products of gauge invariant unitary operators and obtain the exact nonadiabatic correction in the adiabatic approximation. A necessary and sufficient condition that leads to adiabatic evolution with geometric phases is provided and we determine that in the adiabatic evolution, while the eigenstates are slowly varying, the eigenenergies and degeneracy of the Hamiltonian can change rapidly. We exemplify this result by the example of the adiabatic evolution driven by parametrized pulse sequences. For driving fields that are rotating slowly with …
In this letter, we point out that the widely used quantitative conditions in the adiabatic theorem are insufficient in that they do not guarantee the validity of the adiabatic approximation. We also reexamine the inconsistency issue raised by Marzlin and Sanders (Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408, 2004) and elucidate the underlying cause.
The smallness of the variation rate of the hamiltonian matrix elements compared to the (square of the) energy spectrum gap is usually believed to be the key parameter for a quantum adiabatic evolution. However it is only perturbatively valid for scaled timed hamiltonian and resonance processes as well as off resonance possible constructive Stückelberg interference effects violate this usual condition for general hamiltionian. More general adiabatic condition and exact bounds for adiabatic quantum evolution are derived and studied in the framework of a two-level system. The usual criterion is r…
The adiabatic quantum computation is a universal and robust method of quantum computing. In this architecture, the problem can be solved by adiabatically evolving the quantum processor from the ground state of a simple initial Hamiltonian to that of a final one, which encodes the solution of the problem. By far, there is no experimental realization of adiabatic quantum computation on a single solid spin system under ambient conditions, which has been proved to be a compatible candidate for scalable quantum computation. In this letter, we report on the first experimental realization of an adiab…
The quantitative adiabatic condition (QAC), or quantitative condition, is a convenient (a priori) tool for estimating the adiabaticity of quantum evolutions. However, the range of the applicability of QAC is not well understood. It has been shown that QAC can become insufficient for guaranteeing the validity of the adiabatic approximation, but under what conditions the QAC would become necessary has become controversial. Furthermore, it is believed that the inability for the QAC to reveal quantum adiabaticity is due to induced resonant transitions. However, it is not clear how to quantify thes…
Mean-field approach has recently been used to model coupled atom-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and coupled Fermi-Bose condensates near Feshbach resonance. Sweeping of magnetic field across the resonance gives a new (nonlinear) version of Landau-Zener problem. We investigate the structure of the corresponding classical phase space and calculate change in the action which corresponds to finite-rate efficiency of the sweep. We consider the case of non-zero initial action, which corresponds to some finite initial molecular fraction.
Validity conditions for the adiabatic approximation are useful tools to understand and predict the quantum dynamics. Remarkably, the resonance phenomenon in oscillating quantum systems has challenged the adiabatic theorem. In this scenario, inconsistencies in the application of quantitative adiabatic conditions have led to a sequence of new approaches for adiabaticity. Here, by adopting a different strategy, we introduce a validation mechanism for the adiabatic approximation by driving the quantum system to a non-inertial reference frame. More specifically, we begin by considering several rele…
Adiabaticity occurs when, during its evolution, a physical system remains in the instantaneous eigenstate of the hamiltonian. Unfortunately, existing results, such as the quantum adiabatic theorem based on a slow down evolution (H(epsilon t), epsilon ? 0), are insufficient to describe an evolution driven by the hamiltonian H(t) itself. Here we derive general criteria and exact bounds, for the state and its phase, ensuring an adiabatic evolution for any hamiltonian H(t). As a corollary we demonstrate that the commonly used condition of a slow hamiltonian variation rate, compared to the spectral…
Adiabatic or slowly varying gate operations are typically required in order to remain within the qubit subspace in an anharmonic oscillator. However significant speed ups are possible by using the two quadrature derivative-removal-by-adiabatic-gate(DRAG) technique, where a second time derivative pulse component burns a spectral hole near an unwanted transition. It is shown here, that simultaneous optimization of the detuning and the pulse norm in addition, further reduces leakage errors and significantly improve gate fidelities. However, with this optimization accounting for the AC Stark shift…
Adiabatic passage is a standard tool for achieving robust transfer in quantum systems. We show that, in the context of driven nonlinear Hamiltonian systems, adiabatic passage becomes highly non-robust when the target is unstable. We show this result for a generic (1:2) resonance, for which the complete transfer corresponds to a hyperbolic fixed point in the classical phase space featuring an adiabatic connectivity strongly sensitive to small perturbations of the model. By inverse engineering, we devise high-fidelity and robust partially non-adiabatic trajectories. They localize at the approach…
We theoretically examine three-well interferometry in Bose-Einstein condensates using adiabatic passage. Specifically, we demonstrate that a fractional coherent transport adiabatic passage protocol enables stable spatial splitting in the presence of nonlinear interactions. A reversal of this protocol produces a coherent recombination of the BEC with a phase-dependent population of the three wells. The effect of nonlinear interactions on the interferometric measurement is quantified and found to lead to an enhancement in sensitivity for moderate interaction strengths.
The quantum adiabatic theorem states that if a quantum system starts in an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, and this Hamiltonian varies sufficiently slowly, the system stays in this eigenstate. We investigate experimentally the conditions that must be fulfilled for this theorem to hold. We show that the traditional adiabatic condition as well as some conditions that were recently suggested are either not sufficient or not necessary. Experimental evidence is presented by a simple experiment using nuclear spins.
We present an adiabatic quantum algorithm for the abstract problem of searching marked vertices in a graph, or spatial search. Given a random walk (or Markov chain) $P$ on a graph with a set of unknown marked vertices, one can define a related absorbing walk $P'$ where outgoing transitions from marked vertices are replaced by self-loops. We build a Hamiltonian $H(s)$ from the interpolated Markov chain $P(s)=(1-s)P+sP'$ and use it in an adiabatic quantum algorithm to drive an initial superposition over all vertices to a superposition over marked vertices. The adiabatic condition implies that fo…
We examine the quantitative condition which has been widely used as a criterion for the adiabatic approximation but was recently found insufficient. Our results indicate that the usual quantitative condition is sufficient for a special class of quantum mechanical systems. For general systems, it may not be sufficient, but it along with additional conditions is sufficient. The usual quantitative condition and the additional conditions constitute a general criterion for the validity of the adiabatic approximation, which is applicable to all $N-$dimensional quantum systems. Moreover, we illustrat…
The adiabatic theorem and "shortcuts to adiabaticity" for the adiabatic dynamics of time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces are explored in this paper. Starting from the definition of the dynamical stable decoherence-free subspaces, we show that, under a compact adiabatic condition, the quantum state follows time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces (the adiabatic decoherence free subspaces) into the target subspace with extremely high purity, even though the dynamics of the quantum system may be non-adiabatic. The adiabatic condition mentioned in the adiabatic theorem is very similar with t…
We show that the physical mechanism of population transfer in a 3-level system with a closed loop of coherent couplings (loop-STIRAP) is not equivalent to an adiabatic rotation of the dark-state of the Hamiltonian but coresponds to a rotation of a higher-order trapping state in a generalized adiabatic basis. The concept of generalized adiabatic basis sets is used as a constructive tool to design pulse sequences for stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) which give maximum population transfer also under conditions when the usual condition of adiabaticty is only poorly fulfilled. Under cert…
The adiabatic approximation in open systems is formulated through the effective Hamiltonian approach. By introducing an ancilla, we embed the open system dynamics into a non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of a composite system, the adiabatic evolution of the open system is then defined as the adiabatic dynamics of the composite system. Validity and invalidity conditions for this approximation are established and discussed. A High-order adiabatic approximation for open systems is introduced. As an example, the adiabatic condition for an open spin-$\frac 1 2$ particle in time-dependent magnetic fiel…
In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme to drive three atoms in an optical cavity into a singlet state via adiabatic passage. Appropriate Rabi frequencies of the classical fields are selected to realize the present scheme. The scheme is robust against deviations in the pulse delay and laser intensity through some simple analysis of the adiabatic condition. It is notable that the estimated range of the effective adiabaticity condition coincides with the numerical results. When taking dissipation into account, we show that the process is immune to atomic spontaneous emission as the atomic …
Robust stimulated Raman exact passages are requisite for controlling nonlinear quantum systems, with the wide applications ranging from ultracold molecules, non-linear optics to superchemistry. Inspired by shortcuts to adiabaticity, we propose the fast-forward scaling of stimulated Raman adiabatic processes with the nonlinearity involved, describing the transfer from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate to a molecular one by controllable external fields. The fidelity and robustness of atom-molecule conversion are shown to surpass those of conventional adiabatic passages, assisted by fast-forward…
A gapped quantum system that is adiabatically perturbed remains approximately in its eigenstate after the evolution. We prove that, for constant gap, general quantum processes that approximately prepare the final eigenstate require a minimum time proportional to the ratio of the length of the eigenstate path to the gap. Thus, no rigorous adiabatic condition can yield a smaller cost. We also give a necessary condition for the adiabatic approximation that depends on local properties of the path, which is appropriate when the gap varies.
In this paper, we attempt to give a sufficient condition of guaranteeing the validity of the proof of the quantum adiabatic theorem. The new sufficient condition can clearly remove the inconsistency and the counterexample of the quantum adiabatic theorem pointed out by Marzlin and Sanders [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 160408, (2004)].
In this work, we examine the validity of quantum adiabatic theorem in thermodynamic systems. For a $d$-dimensional quantum many-body system, we show that the duration time $τ_0$ required by its ground-state adiabatic process does not depend on the microscopic details, but the scaling dimension of the fidelity susceptibility $d_a$. Our result, therefore, provides a quantitative time scale of the quantum adiabatic theorem in thermodynamic systems. The quantum adiabatic theorem might be violated in case that the scaling dimension of the fidelity susceptibility is larger than the system's real dim…
The adiabatic condition governing cyclic adiabatic inversion of proton spins in a micron-sized ammonium chloride crystal was studied using room temperature nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy. A systematic degradation of signal-to-noise was observed as the adiabatic condition became violated. A theory of adiabatic following applicable to cyclic adiabatic inversion is reviewed and implemented to quantitatively determine an adiabaticity threshold $(γH_1)^2/(ω_{osc}Ω) = 6.0$ from our experimental results.
We study under what conditions the quantum adiabaticity is maintained in a closed many-body system consisting of a one-dimensional fluid and an impurity particle dragged through the latter by an external force. We employ an effective theory describing the low-energy sector of the system to derive the time dependence of the adiabaticity figure of merit -- the adiabatic fidelity. We find that in order to maintain adiabaticity in a large system the external force, $F_N$, should vanish with the system size, $N$, as $1/N$ or faster. This improves the necessary adiabatic condition $F_N=O(1/\log N)$ …
We formulate an adiabatic approximation for the imaginary-time Schroedinger equation. The obtained adiabatic condition consists of two inequalities, one of which coincides with the conventional adiabatic condition for the real-time Schroedinger equation, but the other does not. We apply this adiabatic approximation to the analysis of Markovian dynamics of the classical Ising model, which can be formulated as the imaginary-time Schrödinger equation, to obtain an asymptotic formula for the probability that the system reaches the ground state in the limit of a long annealing time in simulated ann…
A two-dimensional array of Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) with local four-body interactions is a promising candidate for realizing an Ising machine with all-to-all spin couplings, based on adiabatic quantum computation in the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) scheme. However its performance has been evaluated for only a few KPOs. By numerically simulating more KPOs, here we show that the performance can be dramatically improved by reducing inhomogeneity in photon numbers induced by the four-body interactions. The discrepancies of the photon numbers can be corrected by tuning the detunin…
We prove the adiabatic theorem for quantum evolution without the traditional gap condition. All that this adiabatic theorem needs is a (piecewise) twice differentiable finite dimensional spectral projection. The result implies that the adiabatic theorem holds for the ground state of atoms in quantized radiation field. The general result we prove gives no information on the rate at which the adiabatic limit is approached. With additional spectral information one can also estimate this rate.
