It has recently been shown that a parametrically driven oscillator with Kerr nonlinearity yields a Schrödinger cat state via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point and a network of such nonlinear oscillators can be used for solving combinatorial optimization problems by bifurcation-based adiabatic quantum computation [H. Goto, Sci. Rep. \textbf{6}, 21686 (2016)]. Here we theoretically show that such a nonlinear oscillator network with controllable parameters can also be used for universal quantum computation. The initialization is achieved by a quantum-mechanical bifurcation based on quantum adiabatic evolution, which yields a Schrödinger cat state. All the elementary quantum gates are also achieved by quantum adiabatic evolution, in which dynamical phases accompanying the adiabatic evolutions are controlled by the system parameters. Numerical simulation results indicate that high gate fidelities can be achieved, where no dissipation is assumed.
It is shown that a nonclassicality witness, whose expectation value can be measured for all quantum states, can be constructed from every nonclassicality filter. This finding leads to a set of universal witnesses, parameterized by only three real numbers, for the detection of nonclassicality of any quantum state of a harmonic oscillator. An explicit operator expression is given for such a universal witness. The application of the witnesses is demonstrated for a nontrivial example, and its experimental measurement is briefly considered.
We present a simple quantum circuit that allows for the universal and deterministic manipulation of the quantum state of confined harmonic oscillators. The scheme is based on the selective interactions of the referred oscillator with an auxiliary three-level system and a classical external driving source, and enables any unitary operations on Fock states, two-by-two. One circuit is equivalent to a single qubit unitary logical gate on Fock states qubits. Sequences of similar protocols allow for complete, deterministic and state-independent manipulation of the harmonic oscillator quantum state.
Quantum entanglement has been actively sought for in optomechanical and electromechanical systems. The simplest such system is a mechanical oscillator interacting with a coherent beam, while the oscillator also suffers from thermal decoherence. For this system, we show that quantum entanglement is always present between the oscillator and continuous outgoing fields -- even when the environmental temperature is high and the oscillator is highly classical. Such universal entanglement is also shown to be able to survive more than one oscillation cycle if characteristic frequency of the optomechan…
We propose a general method for measuring an arbitrary observable of a multimode electromagnetic field using homodyne detection with a single local oscillator. In this method the local oscillator scans over all possible linear combinations of the modes. The case of two modes is analyzed in detail and the feasibility of the measurement is studied on the basis of Monte-Carlo simulations. We also provide an application of this method in tomographic testing of the GHZ state.
Harmonic oscillators count among the most fundamental quantum systems with important applications in molecular physics, nanoparticle trapping, and quantum information processing. Their equidistant energy level spacing is often a desired feature, but at the same time a challenge if the goal is to deterministically populate specific eigenstates. Here, we show how interference in the transition amplitudes in a bichromatic laser field can suppress the sequential climbing of harmonic oscillator states (Kapitza-Dirac blockade) and achieve selective excitation of energy eigenstates, Schrödinger cats …
We investigate quantum control of an oscillator mode off-resonantly coupled to an ancillary qubit. In the strong dispersive regime, we may drive the qubit conditioned on number states of the oscillator, which together with displacement operations can achieve universal control of the oscillator. Based on our proof of universal control, we provide explicit constructions for arbitrary state preparation and arbitrary unitary operation of the oscillator. Moreover, we present an efficient procedure to prepare the number state $\left|n\right\rangle$ using only $O\left(\sqrt{n}\right)$ operations. We …
A logical qubit is a two-dimensional subspace of a higher dimensional system, chosen such that it is possible to detect and correct the occurrence of certain errors. Manipulation of the encoded information generally requires arbitrary and precise control over the entire system. Whether based on multiple physical qubits or larger dimensional modes such as oscillators, the individual elements in realistic devices will always have residual interactions which must be accounted for when designing logical operations. Here we demonstrate a holistic control strategy which exploits accurate knowledge o…
A controlled evolution generated by nonlinear interactions is required to perform full manipulation of a quantum system, and such control is only coherent when the rate of nonlinearity is large compared to the rate of decoherence. As a result, engineered quantum systems typically rely on a bare nonlinearity much stronger than all decoherence rates, and this hierarchy is usually assumed to be necessary. In this work, we challenge this assumption by demonstrating the universal control of a quantum system where the relevant rate of bare nonlinear interaction is comparable to the fastest rate of d…
New entropic inequalities are obtained for Franck-Condon factors (FCF-s) of diatomic molecules in adiabatic harmonic oscillator approximation. The probability distributions associated with FCF-s of diatomic molecules are presented in the form of joint-probability distributions of either two or three random variables. In view of this representation information inequalities corresponding to subadditivity condition is found and in case of harmonic oscillator approximation is obtained in explicit form of new inequalities for Hermite polynomials. Physical meaning of obtained entropic-information in…
We theoretically analyze a scheme for fast stabilization of arbitrary qubit states with high fidelities, extending a protocol recently demonstrated experimentally [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 150502 (2017)]. That experiment utilized red and blue sideband transitions in a system composed of a fluxonium qubit, a low-Q LC-oscillator, and a coupler enabling us to tune the interaction between them. Under parametric modulations of the coupling strength, the qubit can be steered into any desired pure or mixed single-qubit state. For realistic circuit parameters, we predict that stabilization can…
By encoding a qudit in a harmonic oscillator and investigating the infinite limit, we give an entirely new realization of continuous-variable quantum computation. The generalized Pauli group is generated by number and phase operators for harmonic oscillators. We describe a physical realization in terms of modes in a microwave cavity, coupled via a standard Kerr nonlinearity.
It is shown that the two qubit CNOT (controlled NOT) gate can also be realised using q-deformed angular momentum states via the Jordan-Schwinger mechanism. Thus all the three gates necessary for universality i.e. Hadamard, Phase Shift and the two qubit CNOT gate are realisable with q-deformed oscillators.
One-way quantum computing is experimentally appealing because it requires only local measurements on an entangled resource called a cluster state. Record-size, but non-universal, continuous-variable cluster states were recently demonstrated separately in the time and frequency domains. We propose to combine these approaches into a scalable architecture in which a single optical parametric oscillator and simple interferometer entangle up to ($3\times 10^3$ frequencies) $\times$ (unlimited number of temporal modes) into a new and computationally universal continuous-variable cluster state. We in…
By the early eighties, Fredkin, Feynman, Minsky and others were exploring the notion that the laws of physics could be simulated with computers. Feynman's particular contribution was to bring quantum mechanics into the discussion and his ideas played a key role in the development of quantum computation. It was shown in 1995 by Barenco et al that all quantum computation processes could be written in terms of local operations and CNOT gates. We show how one of the most important of all physical systems, the quantized bosonic oscillator, can be rewritten in precisely those terms and therefore des…
We show that a polynomial H(N) of degree N of a harmonic oscillator hamiltonian allows us to devise a fully solvable continuous quantum system for which the first N discrete energy eigenvalues can be chosen at will. In general such a choice leads to a re-ordering of the associated energy eigenfunctions of H such that the number of their nodes does not increase monotonically with increasing level number. Systems H have certain universal features, we study their basic behaviours.
The dynamics of nonlinear systems qualitatively change depending on their parameters, which is called bifurcation. A quantum-mechanical nonlinear oscillator can yield a quantum superposition of two oscillation states, known as a Schrödinger cat state, via quantum adiabatic evolution through its bifurcation point. Here we propose a quantum computer comprising such quantum nonlinear oscillators, instead of quantum bits, to solve hard combinatorial optimization problems. The nonlinear oscillator network finds optimal solutions via quantum adiabatic evolution, where nonlinear terms are increased s…
Quantum computers with Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) have recently been proposed by the author and others. Quantum computation using KPOs is based on quantum adiabatic bifurcations of the KPOs, which lead to quantum superpositions of coherent states, such as Schrodinger cat states. Therefore, these quantum computers are referred to as "quantum bifurcation machines (QbMs)." QbMs can be used for qauntum adiabatic optimization and universal quantum computation. Superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions, Josephson parametric oscillators (JPOs) in particular, are promising fo…
We show that higher-dimensional versions of qubits, or qudits, can be encoded into spin systems and into harmonic oscillators, yielding important advantages for quantum computation. Whereas qubit-based quantum computation is adequate for analyses of quantum vs classical computation, in practice qubits are often realized in higher-dimensional systems by truncating all but two levels, thereby reducing the size of the precious Hilbert space. We develop natural qudit gates for universal quantum computation, and exploit the entire accessible Hilbert space. Mathematically, we give representations of…
We show how to control and perform universal three-qubit quantum computation with trapped electron quantum states. The three qubits are the electron spin, and the first two quantum states of the cyclotron and axial harmonic oscillators. We explicitly show how the universal gates can be performed. As an example of a non-trivial quantum algorithm, we outline the implementation of the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm in this system.
A possibility of performing the C-NOT gate operation at the ground and the first excited states of two harmonic oscillators interacting via a two-level system subject to complete control is demonstrated. The system resembles Turing machine, where the result of interaction between oscillators and the two level system is restricted to a certain fixed unitary transformation matrix, while all the control required for the implementation of the gate is provided via manipulations with the two-level system, which remains the only fully-controllable part of the entire system. Each gate operation requir…
Recently Levy has shown that quantum computation can be performed using an ABAB.. chain of spin-1/2 systems with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions. Levy notes that all necessary elementary computational `gates' can be achieved by using spin-resonance techniques involving modulating the spin-spin interaction strength at high frequency. Here we note that, as an alternative to that approach, it is possible to perform the elementary gates with simple, non-oscillatory pulses.
We study different aspects of quantum von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropy of one dimensional long-range harmonic oscillators that can be described by well-defined non-local field theories. We show that the entanglement entropy of one interval with respect to the rest changes logarithmically with the number of oscillators inside the subsystem. This is true also in the presence of different boundary conditions. We show that the coefficients of the logarithms coming from different boundary conditions can be reduced to just two different universal coefficients. We also study the effect of t…
It is shown that quantum devices based only on oscillators cannot serve as the universal quantum computer, despite of entanglement in such devices, which we roughly estimate for the ideal case and for the harmful entanglement with photonic modes. We show that quasi-particles are the native shell for the entanglement already for ground state, in contast to the free electromagnetic field where vacuum state does not produce entanglement at all.
We show that in quantum computation almost every gate that operates on two or more bits is a universal gate. We discuss various physical considerations bearing on the proper definition of universality for computational components such as logic gates.
Motivated by studies of ultimate speed of computers, we examine the question of minimum time of orthogonalization in a simple anharmonic oscillator and find an upper bound on the rate of computations. Furthermore, we investigate the growth rate of complexity of operation when the system undergoes a definite perturbation. At the phase space of the parameters, by numerical analysis, we find the critical point where beyond that the rate of complexity changes its behavior.
A Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) is one of the promising devices to realize qubits for universal quantum computing. The KPO can stabilize two coherent states with opposite phases, yielding a quantum superposition called a Schrödinger cat state. Universal quantum computing with KPOs requires three kinds of quantum gates: $R_z, R_x$, and $R_{zz}$ gates. We theoretically propose a two-qubit gate $R_{zz}$ for highly detuned KPOs. In the proposed scheme, we add another two-photon drive for the first KPO. This leads to the $R_{zz}$ gate based on the driving of the second KPO depending on…
We examine the multifold complexity and Loschmidt echo for an inverted harmonic oscillator. We give analytic expressions for any number of precursors, implementing multiple backward and forward time evolutions of the quantum state, at the leading order in the perturbation. We prove that complexity is dominated by the longest permutation of the given time combination in an alternating ``zig-zag'' order, the exact same result obtained with holography. We conjecture that the general structure for multifold complexity should hold true universally for generic quantum systems, in the limit of a larg…
We propose a quantity, ${\mathcal{A}\!\!\!/}$, as a measure describing the nonadiabaticity of a thermodynamic process. For this purpose, we use a schematic method to find the measure of the `degree of nonadiabaticity'. The method utilizes an `invariant' thermal state constructed from the Ermakov-Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant. Specifically, we study a frequency-modulated quantum harmonic oscillator as a thermodynamic system. Naturally, we write the first law of thermodynamics with ${\mathcal{A}\!\!\!/}$ as a measurable quantity. We discuss universality for the method and some possible applications…
We apply the recently developed notion of complexity for field theory to a quantum quench through a critical point in 1+1 dimensions. We begin with a toy model consisting of a quantum harmonic oscillator, and show that complexity exhibits universal scalings in both the slow and fast quench regimes. We then generalize our results to a 1-dimensional harmonic chain, and show that preservation of these scaling behaviours in free field theory depends on the choice of norm. Applying our set-up to the case of two oscillators, we quantify the complexity of purification associated to a subregion, and d…
We study general entanglement properties of the excited states of the one dimensional translational invariant free fermions and coupled harmonic oscillators. In particular, using the integrals of motion, we prove that these Hamiltonians independent of the gap (mass) has infinite excited states that can be described by conformal field theories with integer or half-integer central charges. In the case of free fermions, we also show that because of the huge degeneracy in the spectrum, even a gapless Hamiltonian can have excited states with an area-law. Finally, we study the universal average enta…
Synchronization is a universal phenomenon that is important both in fundamental studies and in technical applications. Here we investigate synchronization in the simplest quantum-mechanical scenario possible, i.e., a quantum-mechanical self-sustained oscillator coupled to an external harmonic drive. Using the power spectrum we analyze synchronization in terms of frequency entrainment and frequency locking in close analogy to the classical case. We show that there is a step-like crossover to a synchronized state as a function of the driving strength. In contrast to the classical case, there is …
We propose a solid-state hybrid platform based on an array of implanted nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond magnetically coupled to a mechanical oscillator. The mechanical oscillator and the NV electronic spins both act as a quantum bus and allow us to induce an effective long-range interaction between distant nuclear spins, relaxing the requirements on their spatial distance. The coherent nuclear spin-spin interaction, having the form of an Ising model, can be maintained in the presence of mechanical damping and spin dephasing via a pulsed dynamical decoupling of the nuclear spins in add…
Coupled parametric oscillators were recently employed as simulators of artificial Ising networks, with the potential to solve computationally hard minimization problems. We demonstrate a new dynamical regime within the simplest network - two coupled parametric oscillators, where the oscillators never reach a steady state, but show persistent, full-scale, coherent beats, whose frequency reflects the coupling properties and strength. We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study and show that this new dynamical regime appears over a wide range of parameters near the oscillation thresh…
