We propose the dynamic control of two-color stationary light in a double-lambda four-level system using electromagnetically induced transparency. We demonstrate the complete localization of two-color quantum fields inside a medium using coherence moving gratings resulting from slow-light based atom-field interactions in backward nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. The quantum coherent control of the two-color stationary light opens a door to deterministic quantum information science which needs a quantum nondemolition measurement, where the two-color stationary light scheme would greatly enhance nonlinearity with increased interaction time.
Ultralong trapping of light has been observed in an optically dense three-level solid medium interacting with a pair of counterpropagating coupling fields. Unlike the light trapping based on standing-wave gratings excited by the same frequency pair of counterpropagating light fields (M. Bajcsy et al., Nature 426, 638 (2003)), the present method uses resonant Raman optical field-excited spin coherence gratings. The observed light trapping time is two orders of magnitude longer than the expected value of the spin dephasing time, where the extended storage time has potential for quantum informati…
We investigate the evolution of a Zeeman coherence grating induced in a cold atomic cesium sample in the presence of an external magnetic field. The gratings are created in a three-beam light storage configuration using two quasi-collinear writing laser pulses and reading with a counterpropagating pulse after a variable time delay. The phase conjugated pulse arising from the atomic sample is monitored. Collapses and revivals of the retrieved pulse are observed for different polarizations of the laser beams and for different directions of the applied magnetic field. While magnetic field inhomog…
Using on-demand coherence conversion via optical locking in conventional stimulated (three-pulse) photon echoes, ultralong, ultraefficient photon storage has been observed in a rare-earth Pr3+ doped Y2SiO5, where storage time is several orders of magnitude longer and retrieval efficiency is enhanced by fifty times. Compared with the same method applied to two-pulse photon echoes for a rephasing halt, use of spectral grating in the stimulated photon echoes offers a phase-independent coherence conversion between optical and spin states. Eventually an ultralong spin population decay-dependent pho…
We report on a detailed investigation of the dynamics and the saturation of a light grating stored in a sample of cold cesium atoms. We employ Bragg diffraction to retrieve the stored optical information impressed into the atomic coherence by the incident light fields. The diffracted efficiency is studied as a function of the intensities of both writing and reading laser beams. A theoretical model is developed to predict the temporal pulse shape of the retrieved signal and compares reasonably well with the observed results.
Quantum coherence is a fundamental property of quantum systems, separating quantum from classical physics. Recently, there has been significant interest in the characterization of quantum coherence as a resource, investigating how coherence can be extracted and used for quantum technological applications. In this work we review the progress of this research, focusing in particular on recent experimental efforts. After a brief review of the underlying theory we discuss the main platforms for realizing the experiments: linear optics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and superconducting systems. We th…
We characterize the operational capabilities of quantum channels which can neither create nor detect quantum coherence vis-à-vis efficiently manipulating coherence as a resource. We study the class of dephasing-covariant operations (DIO), unable to detect the coherence of any input state, as well as introduce an operationally-motivated class of channels $ρ$-DIO which is tailored to a specific input state. We first show that pure-state transformations under DIO are completely governed by majorization, establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for such transformations and adding to the li…
We provide a self-contained quantum description of the interference produced by macromolecules diffracted by a grating, with particular reference to fullerene interferometry experiments. We analyze the processes inducing loss of coherence consisting in beam preparation (collimation setup and thermal spread of the wavelengths of the macromolecules) and in environmental disturbances. The results show a good agreement with experimental data published by Zeilinger's group and highlight the analogy with optics. Our analysis gives some hints for planning future experiments.
Quantum resource manipulation may include an ancillary state called a catalyst, which aids the transformation while restoring its original form at the end, and characterizing the enhancement enabled by catalysts is essential to reveal the ultimate manipulability of the precious resource quantity of interest. Here, we show that allowing correlation among multiple catalysts can offer arbitrary power in the manipulation of quantum coherence. We prove that any state transformation can be accomplished with an arbitrarily small error by covariant operations with catalysts that may create a correlati…
The Sauter-Schwinger process of electron-positron pair creation from vacuum, driven by a sequence of time-dependent electric-field pulses, is studied in the framework of quantum-field theoretical approach. As demonstrated by our numerical results, the probability distributions of produced pairs exhibit intra- and inter-pulse interference structures. We show that such structures can be observed beyond the regime of applicability of the WKB theory, which was the focus of earlier investigations. Going beyond these developments, we perform the analysis of the time-evolution operator for an arbitra…
This paper summarizes our recent progress towards using single rubidium atoms trapped in an optical tweezer to encode quantum information. We demonstrate single qubit rotations on this system and measure the coherence of the qubit. We move the quantum bit over distances of tens of microns and show that the coherence is reserved. We also transfer a qubit atom between two tweezers and show no loss of coherence. Finally, we describe our progress towards conditional entanglement of two atoms by photon emission and two-photon interferences.
We demonstrate fast and accurate control of the evolution of collective atomic coherences in an Erbium doped solid using external electric fields. This is achieved by controlling the inhomogeneous broadening of Erbium ions emitting at 1536 nm using an electric field gradient and the linear Stark effect. The manipulation of atomic coherence is characterized with the collective spontaneous emission (optical free induction decay) emitted by the sample after an optical excitation, which does not require any previous preparation of the atoms. We show that controlled dephasing and rephasing of the a…
Physical systems in the time domain may exhibit analogous phenomena in real space, such as time crystals, time-domain Fresnel lenses, and modulational interference in a qubit. Here we report the experimental realization of time-domain grating using a superconducting qutrit in periodically modulated probe and control fields via two schemes: Simultaneous modulation and complementary modulation. Both experimental and numerical results exhibit modulated Autler-Townes (AT) and modulation-induced diffraction (MID) effects. Theoretical results also confirm that the peak positions of the interference …
We compute on all quantum states several measures that characterise asymptotic quantum coherence manipulation under restricted classes of operations. We focus on the distillable coherence, i.e. the maximum rate of production of approximate pure bits of coherence starting from independent copies of an input state $ρ$, and on the coherence cost, i.e. the minimum rate of consumption of pure coherence bits that is needed to generate many copies of $ρ$ with vanishing error. We obtain the first closed-form expression for the distillable coherence under strictly incoherent operations (SIO), proving t…
Manipulation and quantification of quantum resources are fundamental problems in quantum physics. In the asymptotic limit, coherence distillation and dilution have been proposed by manipulating infinite identical copies of states. In the non-asymptotic setting, finite data-size effects emerge, and the practically relevant problem of coherence manipulation using finite resources has been left open. This letter establishes the one-shot theory of coherence dilution, which involves converting maximally coherent states into an arbitrary quantum state using maximally incoherent operations, dephasing…
The limitations for the coherent manipulation of neutral atoms with fabricated solid state devices, so-called `atom chips', are addressed. Specifically, we examine the dominant decoherence mechanism, which is due to the magnetic noise originating from the surface of the atom chip. It is shown that the contribution of fluctuations in the chip wires at the shot noise level is not negligible. We estimate the coherence times and discuss ways to increase them. Our main conclusion is that future advances should allow for coherence times as long as one second, a few micrometers away from the surface.
A scheme for controlling the entanglement of a two-qubit system by a local magnetic pulse is proposed. We show that the entanglement of the two-qubit system can be increased by sacrificing the coherence in ancillary degree of freedom, which is induced by a local manipulation.
Ultrafast transmission changes around the fundamental trion resonance are studied after exciting a p-shell exciton in a negatively charged II-VI quantum dot. The biexcitonic induced absorption reveals quantum beats between hot trion states at 133 GHz. While interband dephasing is dominated by relaxation of the P-shell hole within 390 fs, trionic coherence remains stored in the spin system for 85 ps due to Pauli blocking of the triplet electron. The complex spectro-temporal evolution of transmission is explained analytically by solving the Maxwell-Liouville equations. Pump and probe polarizatio…
We calculate the Casimir-Lifshitz pressure in a system consisting of two different 1D dielectric lamellar gratings having two different temperatures and immersed in an environment having a third temperature. The calculation of the pressure is based on the knowledge of the scattering operators, deduced using the Fourier Modal Method. The behavior of the pressure is characterized in detail as a function of the three temperatures of the system as well as the geometrical parameters of the two gratings. We show that the interplay between non-equilibrium effects and geometrical periodicity offers a …
We have observed the stationary interference oscillations of a triple-entangled neutron state in an interferometric experiment. Time-dependent interaction with two radio-frequency (rf) fields enables coherent manipulation of an energy degree of freedom in a single neutron. The system is characterized by a multiply entangled state governed by a Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. The experimental results confirm coherence of the manipulation as well as the validity of the description.
We study the coherence times and perform manipulations on the lowest-energy states of trivalent cerium ion in calcium tungstate crystal. We find the phase memory time reaching 14.2 $μ$s and the time of coherent manipulations reaching 0.3 $μ$s in the low-temperature limit, the latter can potentially be elongated by using the rotation angle and off-resonance error correction schemes.
We present a quantum manipulation of a traveling light pulse using double atomic coherence for two-color stationary light and quantum frequency conversion. The quantum frequency conversion rate of the traveling light achieved by the two-color stationary light phenomenon is near unity. We theoretically discuss the two-color stationary light for the frequency conversion process in terms of pulse area, energy transfer and propagation directions. The resulting process may apply the coherent interactions of a weak field to nonlinear quantum optics such as quantum nondemolition measurement.
The coherence of quantum systems is crucial to quantum information processing. While it has been demonstrated that superconducting qubits can process quantum information at microelectronics rates, it remains a challenge to preserve the coherence and therefore the quantum character of the information in these systems. An alternative is to share the tasks between different quantum platforms, e.g. cold atoms storing the quantum information processed by superconducting circuits. In our experiment, we characterize the coherence of superposition states of 87Rb atoms magnetically trapped on a superco…
We have demonstrated that near complete coherence can be achieved in a four level double lambda-like systems using a train of ultra-short optical pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed and a scheme has been proposed for establishing high and uniform coherence across different velocity groups in the atomic ensemble. We have also presented a novel scheme of excitation using chirped pulses and shown that in addition to generating coherence in the system it is possible to alter the translational states of the atoms.
Quantum resource theories have been widely studied to systematically characterize the non-classicality of quantum systems. Most resource theories focus on quantum states and study their interconversions. Although quantum channels are generally used as the tool for state manipulation, such a manipulation capability can be naturally regarded as a generalized quantum resource, leading to an open research direction in the resource theories of quantum channels. Various resource-theoretic properties of channels have been investigated, however, without treating channels themselves as operational reso…
Any quantum resource theory is based on free states and free operations, i.e., states and operations which can be created and performed at no cost. In the resource theory of coherence free states are diagonal in some fixed basis, and free operations are those which cannot create coherence for some particular experimental realization. Recently, some problems of this approach have been discussed, and new sets of operations have been proposed to resolve these problems. As an example for such a problem, a quantum operation can be incoherent in one particular experimental realization, but it still …
We demonstrate the use of trapped ytterbium ions as quantum bits for quantum information processing. We implement fast, efficient state preparation and state detection of the first-order magnetic field-insensitive hyperfine levels of 171Yb+, with a measured coherence time of 2.5 seconds. The high efficiency and high fidelity of these operations is accomplished through the stabilization and frequency modulation of relevant laser sources.
Clusters of solid-state quantum devices have long-living metastable states of local energy minima which may be used to store quantum information. The low to vanishing rate of dissipation fulfils the prerequisite to maintain quantum coherence. Then physical symmetrization of the devices could minimize the couplings of the clusters to environmental degrees of freedom so to reduce the rate of decoherence. Combined with various other error correction mechanisms and methods, such designs and optimizations could render solid-state devices useful for quantum information processing, which have the adv…
The manipulation of quantum coherence is one of the principal issues in the resource theory of coherence, with two critical topics being the purification and enhancement of coherence. Here, we present two no-go theorems for the deterministic purification of coherence and the probabilistic enhancement of coherence, respectively. Specifically, we prove that a quantum state cannot be deterministically purified if it can be expressed as a convex combination of an incoherent state and a coherent state. Besides, we give an easy-to-verified sufficient and necessary condition to determine whether a st…
As an important quantum resource, quantum coherence play key role in quantum information processing. It is often concerned with manipulation of families of quantum states rather than individual states in isolation. Given two pairs of coherent states $(ρ_1,ρ_2)$ and $(σ_1,σ_2)$, we are aimed to study how can we determine if there exists a strictly incoherent operation $Φ$ such that $Φ(ρ_i) =σ_i,i = 1,2$. This is also a classic question in quantum hypothesis testing. In this note, structural characterization of coherent preorder under strongly incoherent operations is provided. Basing on the cha…
The coherence effects induced by external photons coupled to matter waves inside a Mach-Zehnder three-grating interferometer are analyzed. Alternatively to atom-photon entanglement scenarios, the model considered here only relies on the atomic wave function and the momentum shift induced in it by the photon scattering events. A functional dependence is thus found between the observables, namely the fringe visibility and the phase shift, and the transversal momentum transfer distribution. A good quantitative agreement is found when comparing the results obtained from our model with the experime…
Reliable quantum information processing requires high-fidelity universal manipulation of quantum systems within the characteristic coherence times. Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation offers a promising approach to implement fast, universal, and robust quantum logic gates particularly useful in nano-fabricated solid-state architectures, which typically have short coherence times. Here, we propose an experimentally feasible scheme to realize high-speed universal geometric quantum gates in nano-engineered pseudo-spin charge qubits. We use a system of three coupled quantum dots containing…
The first law of thermodynamics imposes not just a constraint on the energy-content of systems in extreme quantum regimes, but also symmetry-constraints related to the thermodynamic processing of quantum coherence. We show that this thermodynamic symmetry decomposes any quantum state into mode operators that quantify the coherence present in the state. We then establish general upper and lower bounds for the evolution of quantum coherence under arbitrary thermal operations, valid for any temperature. We identify primitive coherence manipulations and show that the transfer of coherence between …
The manipulation of matterwave represents a milestone in the history of quantum mechanics. It was at the basis of its experimental validation through the observation of diffraction of matter on crystals, as well as grating and Young's double-slit interference with electrons, neutron, atoms and molecules. More recently matterwave manipulation has become a building block in the implementation of quantum devices such as quantum sensors and it plays an essential role in many proposals for implementing quantum computers. In this letter we coherently control the spatial extent of the wavefunction by…
It is shown how to implement quantum feedback and probabilistic error correction in an open quantum system consisting of a single atom, with ground- and excited-state Zeeman structure, in a driven two-mode optical cavity. The ground state superposition is manipulated and controlled through conditional measurements and external fields, which shield the coherence and correct quantum errors. Modeling of an experimentally realistic situation demonstrates the robustness of the proposal for realization in the laboratory.
We investigate theoretically the quantum-coherence properties of the cathodoluminescence (CL) emission produced by a temporally modulated electron beam. Specifically, we consider the quantum-optical correlations of CL from electrons that are previously shaped by a laser field. The main prediction here is the presence of phase correlations between the emitted CL field and the electron-modulating laser, even though the emission intensity and spectral profile are independent of the electron state. In addition, the coherence of the CL field extends to harmonics of the laser frequency. Since electr…
Molecular ro-vibronic coherences, joint energy-time distributions of quantum amplitudes, are selectively prepared, manipulated, and imaged in Time-Frequency-Resolved Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (TFRCARS) measurements using femtosecond laser pulses. The studies are implemented in iodine vapor, with its thermally occupied statistical ro-vibrational density serving as initial state. The evolution of the massive ro-vibronic superpositions, consisting of 1000 eigenstates, is followed through two-dimensional images. The first- and second-order coherences are captured using time-integrated …
Research on matter waves is a thriving field of quantum physics and has recently stimulated many investigations with electrons, neutrons, atoms, Bose-condensed ensembles, cold clusters and hot molecules. Coherence experiments with complex objects are of interest for exploring the transition to classical physics, for measuring molecular properties and they have even been proposed for testing new models of space-time. For matter-wave experiments with complex molecules, the strongly dispersive effect of the interaction between the diffracted molecule and the grating wall is a major challenge beca…
Two dimensional electronic spectroscopy and transient grating measurements were performed, for the first time, on nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. These measurements reveal energy transfer and vibrational pathways with consequences for spin coherence.
Photon impingement is capable of liberating electrons in electronic devices and driving the electron flux from the lower chemical potential to higher chemical potential. Previous studies hinted that the thermodynamic efficiency of a nano-sized photoelectric converter at maximum power is bounded by the Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency. In this study, we apply quantum effects to design a photoelectric converter based on a three-level quantum dot (QD) interacting with fermionic baths and photons. We show that, by adopting a pair of suitable degenerate states, quantum coherences induced by the couplings …
In quantum information processing, quantum cavities play an important role by providing the mechanisms to transfer information between atom qubits and photon qubits, or to couple single atoms with the optical modes of the cavity field. We explore numerically the population transfer in an atom + cavity system by using the $π$-pulse and adiabatic passage methods. While the first method is very efficient transferring the atomic population for no radiative decay of the intermediate level, the second method shows very interesting nonadiabatic, resonance-like properties that can be used to achieve v…
We consider a two-spin qubit that is subject to the orderparameter field of a symmetry broken manipulation device. It is shown that the thin spectrum of the manipulation device limits the coherence of the qubit.
Matter-wave interferometry has become an essential tool in studies on the foundations of quantum physics and for precision measurements. Mechanical gratings have played an important role as coherent beamsplitters for atoms, molecules and clusters since the basic diffraction mechanism is the same for all particles. However, polarizable objects may experience van der Waals shifts when they pass the grating walls and the undesired dephasing may prevent interferometry with massive objects. Here we explore how to minimize this perturbation by reducing the thickness of the diffraction mask to its ul…
Solid-state electronic spin systems such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond are promising for applications of quantum information, sensing, and metrology. However, a key challenge for such solid-state systems is to realize a spin coherence time that is much longer than the time for quantum spin manipulation protocols. Here we demonstrate an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude in the spin coherence time ($T_2$) of NV centers compared to previous measurements: $T_2 \approx 0.5$ s at 77 K, which enables $\sim 10^7$ coherent NV spin manipulations before decoherence. We …
Low-capacitance Josephson junction arrays in the parameter range where single charges can be controlled are suggested as possible physical realizations of the elements which have been considered in the context of quantum computers. We discuss single and multiple quantum bit systems. The systems are controlled by applied gate voltages, which also allow the necessary manipulation of the quantum states. We estimate that the phase coherence time is sufficiently long for experimental demonstration of the principles of quantum computation.
In the Kapitza-Dirac effect, atoms, molecules, or swift electrons are diffracted off a standing wave grating of the light intensity created by two counter-propagating laser fields. In ultrafast electron optics, such a coherent beam splitter offers interesting perspectives for ultrafast beam shaping. Here, we study, both analytically and numerically, the effect of the inclination angle between two laser fields on the diffraction of pulsed, low-energy electron beams. For sufficiently high light intensities, we observe a rich variety of complex diffraction patterns. These do not only reflect inte…
High-spin paramagnetic manganese defects in polar piezoelectric zinc oxide exhibit a simple almost axial anisotropy and phase coherence times of the order of a millisecond at low temperatures. The anisotropy energy is tunable using an externally applied electric field. This can be used to control electrically the phase of spin superpositions and to drive spin transitions with resonant microwave electric fields.
We report on room-temperature coherent manipulation of the spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond and a study of its coherence as a function of magnetic field. We use magnetic resonance to induce Rabi nutations, and apply a Hahn spin echo to remove the effect of low-frequency dephasing. A sharp rise in the decoherence rate is observed at magnetic fields where the nitrogen-vacancy center spin couples resonantly to substitutional nitrogen spins via the magnetic dipolar coupling. Finally, we find evidence that away from these energy resonances spin flips of nitrogen electrons are the…
This paper reviews some of our recent results in nonlinear atom optics. In addition to nonlinear wave-mixing between matter waves, we also discuss the dynamical interplay between optical and matter waves. This new paradigm, which is now within experimental reach, has the potential to impact a number of fields of physics, including the manipulation and applications of atomic coherence, and the preparation of quantum entanglement between microscopic and macroscopic systems. Possible applications include quantum information processing, matter-wave holography, and nanofabrication.
We present a model for an autonomous quantum thermal machine comprised of two qubits capable of manipulating and even amplifying the local coherence in a non-degenerate external system. The machine uses only thermal resources, namely, contact with two heat baths at different temperatures, and the external system has a non-zero initial amount of coherence. The method we propose allows for an interconversion between energy, both work and heat, and coherence in an autonomous configuration working in out-of-equilibrium conditions. This model raises interesting questions about the role of fundament…
