Clusters of solid-state quantum devices have long-living metastable states of local energy minima which may be used to store quantum information. The low to vanishing rate of dissipation fulfils the prerequisite to maintain quantum coherence. Then physical symmetrization of the devices could minimize the couplings of the clusters to environmental degrees of freedom so to reduce the rate of decoherence. Combined with various other error correction mechanisms and methods, such designs and optimizations could render solid-state devices useful for quantum information processing, which have the advantages of flexibility in state manipulation and system scaling.
In the long-time limit, an open quantum system coupled to a dissipative environment is believed to lose its coherence without driving or measurement. Counterintuitively, we provide a necessary condition on trapping the coherence of a two-level system entirely with a thermal bath. Based on a time-local master equation, it is found that the residue coherence survives even under a high-temperature bath as long as the long-time Lamb shift is exactly negative to the system transition frequency. This condition is generally met in the strong and even ultrastrong coupling regime that could be relaxed …
The fidelity of the gate operation and the coherence time of neutral atoms trapped in an optical dipole trap are figures of merit for the applications. The motion of the trapped atom is one of the key factors which influence the gate fidelity and coherence time. The motion has been considered as a classical oscillator in analyzing the influence. Here we treat the motion of the atom as a quantum oscillator. The population on the vibrational states of the atom are considered in analyzing the gate fidelity and decoherence. We show that the fidelity of a coherent rotation gate is dramatically limi…
In this work, we construct a polarization-mediated magic-intensity (MI) optical dipole trap (ODT) array, in which the detrimental effects of light shifts on the mixed-species qubits are efficiently mitigated so that the coherence times of the mixed-species qubits are both substantially enhanced and balanced for the first time. This mixed-species magic trapping technique relies on the tunability of the coefficient of the third-order cross term and ground state hyperpolarizability, which are inherently dependent on the degree of circular polarization of the trap laser. Experimentally, polarizati…
The question of how quantum coherence facilitates energy transfer has been intensively debated in the scientific community. Since natural and artificial light-harvesting units operate under the stationary condition, we address this question via a non-equilibrium steady-state analysis of a molecular dimer irradiated by incoherent sunlight and then generalize the key predictions to arbitrarily-complex exciton networks. The central result of the steady-state analysis is the coherence-flux-efficiency relation:$η=c\sum_{i\neq j}F_{ij}κ_j=2c\sum_{i\neq j}J_{ij}{\rm Im}[ρ_{ij}]κ_j$ with $c$ the norma…

We report on the trapping of single Rb atoms in tunable arrays of optical tweezers in a cryogenic environment at $\sim 4$ K. We describe the design and construction of the experimental apparatus, based on a custom-made, UHV compatible, closed-cycle cryostat with optical access. We demonstrate the trapping of single atoms in cryogenic arrays of optical tweezers, with lifetimes in excess of $\sim6000$ s, despite the fact that the vacuum system has not been baked out. These results open the way to large arrays of single atoms with extended coherence, for applications in large-scale quantum simula…
Advanced quantum technologies, such as quantum simulation, computation, and metrology are thriving for the implementation of large-scale configurations of identical quantum systems. Sets of atoms and molecules have the advantage of having identical intrinsic properties but need to be placed in identical environments as well. In this work, we present a strong suppression of dephasing effects and a significant increase of the coherence time for ensembles of neutral atoms in arrays of optical traps. Compensation of the differential Stark shift caused by the optical trapping potential is achieved …
Cryogenic environments benefit ion trapping experiments by offering lower motional heating rates, collision energies, and an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment for maintaining long ion chains for extended periods of time. Mechanical vibrations caused by compressors in closed-cycle cryostats can introduce relative motion between the ion and the wavefronts of lasers used to manipulate the ions. Here, we present a novel ion trapping system where a commercial low-vibration closed-cycle cryostat is used in a custom monolithic enclosure. We measure mechanical vibrations of the sample stage using an…
Originated from the superposition principle in quantum mechanics, coherence has been extensively studied as a kind important resource in quantum information processing. We investigate the distinguishability of coherence-breaking channels with the help of quantum entanglement. By explicitly computing the minimal error probability of channel discrimination, it is shown that entanglement can enhance the capacity of coherence-breaking channel distinguishability with same types for some cases while cannot enhanced for some other cases. For coherence-breaking channels with different types, the chann…
The resource theory of coherence studies the operational value of superpositions in quantum technologies. A key question in this theory concerns the efficiency of manipulation and interconversion of this resource. Here we solve this question completely for mixed states of qubits by determining the optimal probabilities for mixed state conversions via stochastic incoherent operations. This implies new lower bounds on the asymptotic state conversion rate between mixed single-qubit states which in some cases is proven to be tight. Furthermore, we obtain the minimal distillable coherence for given…

Optical trapping of molecules with long coherence times is crucial for many protocols in quantum information and metrology. However, the factors that limit the lifetimes of the trapped molecules remain elusive and require improved understanding of the underlying molecular structure. Here we show that measurements of vibronic line strengths in weakly and deeply bound $^{88}$Sr$_2$ molecules, combined with \textit{ab initio} calculations, allow for unambiguous identification of vibrational quantum numbers. This, in turn, enables the construction of refined excited potential energy curves that in…
The preparation of large, low-entropy, highly coherent ensembles of identical quantum systems is foundational for many studies in quantum metrology, simulation, and information. Here, we realize these features by leveraging the favorable properties of tweezer-trapped alkaline-earth atoms while introducing a new, hybrid approach to tailoring optical potentials that balances scalability, high-fidelity state preparation, site-resolved readout, and preservation of atomic coherence. With this approach, we achieve trapping and optical clock excited-state lifetimes exceeding $ 40 $ seconds in ensembl…
