We study the coherence times and perform manipulations on the lowest-energy states of trivalent cerium ion in calcium tungstate crystal. We find the phase memory time reaching 14.2 $μ$s and the time of coherent manipulations reaching 0.3 $μ$s in the low-temperature limit, the latter can potentially be elongated by using the rotation angle and off-resonance error correction schemes.
Erbium ions doped into crystals have unique properties for quantum information processing, because of their optical transition at 1.5 $μ$m and of the large magnetic moment of their effective spin-1/2 electronic ground state. Most applications of erbium require however long electron spin coherence times, and this has so far been missing. Here, by selecting a host matrix with a low nuclear-spin density (CaWO$_4$) and by quenching the spectral diffusion due to residual paramagnetic impurities at millikelvin temperatures, we obtain an Er$^{3+}$ electron spin coherence time of 23 ms. This is the lo…
We report the first observation of Rabi oscillations in the spin-7/2 ensemble of trivalent gadolinium ions hosted in CaWO$_4$ single crystal. A number of transitions within the lowest electronic multiplet $^8S_{7/2}$ of Gd$^{3+}$ ion are studied using a combination of continuous-wave and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The corresponding Rabi damping curves and the spin coherence times are detected at varying strengths of the microwave field. These data are well reproduced by a theoretical model which accounts for the intrinsic inhomogeneity of the microwave field within th…
We have demonstrated electron-electron and electron-nuclear spin manipulations of Gd3+ ion in CaWO4 crystal. The results suggest that the studied system is perspective for multiqubit implementation in quantum computing.
We report the realization of a strong coupling between a Gd$^{3+}$ spin ensemble hosted in a scheelite (CaWO$_4$) single crystal and the resonant mode of a coplanar stripline superconducting cavity leading to a large separation of spin-photon states of 146 MHz. The interaction is well described by the Dicke model and the crystal-field Hamiltonian of the multilevel spin system. We observe a change of the crystal-field parameters due to the presence of photons in the cavity that generates a significant perturbation of the crystal ground state. Using finite-element calculations, we numerically es…
We study coherent dynamics in a system of dipolar coupled spin qubits diluted in solid and subjected to a driving microwave field. In the case of rare earth ions, anisotropic crystal background results in anisotropic g tensor and thus modifies the dipolar coupling. We develop a microscopic theory of spin relaxation in transient regime for the frequently encountered case of axially symmetric crystal field. The calculated decoherence rate is nonlinear in Rabi frequency. We show that the direction of static magnetic field that corresponds to the highest spin g-factor is preferable in order to obt…

We investigate optical bistability in a multilayer one-dimensional photonic crystal where the central layer is doped with $Λ$-type three level atoms. We take into account the influence of spontaneously generated coherence when the lower atomic levels are sufficiently close to each other, in which case Kerr-type nonlinear response of the atoms is enhanced. We calculate the propagation of a probe beam in the defect mode window using numerical nonlinear transfer matrix method. We find that Rabi frequency of a control field acting on the defect layer and the detuning of the probe field from the at…
Single defects in diamond and especially negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers are very promising quantum systems with wide applications in physics and biology. It was shown that their coherence properties can be strongly improved by growing ultrapure diamond with low concentration of parasitic spins associated with nitrogen electron spins and nuclear spins related to $^{13}$C carbon isotope. Here we report a high quality $^{12}$C-enriched polycrystalline CVD diamond material with properties comparable with single crystals. We find single NVs in the grains of this material, which sh…
The quantum interference effects induced by the Wess-Zumino term, or Berry phase are studied theoretically in resonant quantum coherence of magnetization vector between degenerate excited states in nanometer-scale single-domain ferromagnets in the absence of an external magnetic field. By applying the periodic instanton method in the spin-coherent-state path integral, we evaluate the low-lying tunnel splittings between degenerate excited states of neighboring wells. And the low-lying energy level spectrum of m-th excited states are obtained with the help of the Bloch theorem in one-dimensional…
The spin coherence phenomena and the possibility of their observation in nanomagnetic insulators attract more and more attention in the last several years. Recently it has been shown that in these systems in large transverse magnetic field there can be a fairly narrow "coherence window" for phonon and nuclear spin-mediated decoherence. What kind of spin dynamics can then be expected in this window in a crystal of magnetic nanomolecules coupled to phonons, to nuclear spin bath and it to each other via dipole-dipole interactions? Studying multispin correlations, we determine the region of parame…
The investigation of single atoms in solids, with both optical and nuclear spin access is of particularly interest with applications ranging from nanoscale sensing to quantum computation. Here, we study the optical and spin properties of single praseodymium ions in an yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal at cryogenic temperature. The single nuclear spin of single praseodymium ions is detected through a background-free optical upconverting readout technique. Single ions show stable photoluminescence (PLE) with spectrally resolved hyperfine splitting of the praseodymium ground state. Based on t…
Long coherence times are key to the performance of quantum bits (qubits). Here, we experimentally and theoretically show that the Hahn-echo coherence time (T2) of electron spins associated with divacancy defects in 4H-SiC reaches 1.3 ms, one of the longest T2 times of an electron spin in a naturally isotopic crystal. Using a first-principles microscopic quantum-bath model, we find that two factors determine the unusually robust coherence. First, in the presence of moderate magnetic fields (300 G and above), the 29Si and 13C paramagnetic nuclear spin baths are decoupled. In addition, because Si…
We use the nuclear spin coherence of $^{31}$P donors in $^{28}$Si to determine flip-flop rates of donor electron spins. Isotopically purified $^{28}$Si crystals minimize the number of $^{29}$Si flip-flops, and measurements at 1.7 K suppress electron spin relaxation. The crystals have donor concentrations ranging from $1.2\times10^{14}$ to $3.3\times10^{15}~\text{P/cm}^3$, allowing us to detect how electron flip-flop rates change with donor density. We also simulate how electron spin flip-flops can cause nuclear spin decoherence. We find that when these flip-flops are the primary cause of decoh…
We performed measurements of photon correlation [$g^{(2)}(τ)$] in driven nonlinear high-$Q$ silicon (Si) photonic crystal (PhC) microcavities. The measured $g^{(2)}(τ)$ exhibits a damped oscillatory behavior when input pump power exceeds a critical value. From comparison between experiments and simulations, we attribute the measured oscillation of $g^{(2)}(τ)$ to self-pulsing (a limit cycle) emerging from an interplay between photon, carrier, and thermal dynamics. Namely, the oscillation frequency of $g^{(2)}(τ)$ corresponds to the oscillation period of the limit cycle, while its finite cohere…

In solid state conductors, linear response to a steady electric field is normally dominated by Bloch state occupation number changes that are correlated with group velocity and lead to a steady state current. However, for a number of important physical observables, the most important response even in conductors can be electric-field induced coherence between Bloch states in different bands, such as that responsible for screening in dielectrics. Examples include the anomalous and spin-Hall effects, spin torques, minimum conductivities and the chiral anomaly. In this paper we present a general q…
The optical responses of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are dominated by excitons. Being able to strongly interact with light and other materials excitations, excitons in semiconductors are prototypes for investigating many-particle and strong-field physics, including exciton-exciton, exciton-photon, and exciton-phonon interactions. Strong exciton-photon interactions, in particular, can lead to the emergence of exciton-polariton hybrid quasiparticles with peculiar characteristics, and a tendency toward macroscopic and spontaneous coherence. Normally, far-field and near-field o…
When two-dimensional electrons are subjected to a very strong magnetic field, they are believed to form a triangular Wigner crystal. We demonstrate that, in the entire crystal phase, this crystal is very well represented by a composite-fermion-crystal wave function, revealing that it is not a simple Hartree-Fock crystal of electrons but an inherently quantum mechanical crystal characterized by a non-perturbative binding of quantized vortices to electrons, which establishes a long range quantum coherence in it. It is suggested that this has qualitative consequences for experiment.
The emergence of two-dimensional crystals has revolutionized modern solid-state physics. From a fundamental point of view, the enhancement of charge carrier correlations has sparked enormous research activities in the transport- and quantum optics communities. One of the most intriguing effects, in this regard, is the bosonic condensation and spontaneous coherence of many-particle complexes. Here, we find compelling evidence of bosonic condensation of exciton-polaritons emerging from an atomically thin crystal of MoSe2 embedded in a dielectric microcavity under optical pumping. The formation o…
Crystal defects can confine isolated electronic spins and are promising candidates for solid-state quantum information. Alongside research focusing on nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond, an alternative strategy seeks to identify new spin systems with an expanded set of technological capabilities, a materials driven approach that could ultimately lead to "designer" spins with tailored properties. Here, we show that the 4H, 6H and 3C polytypes of SiC all host coherent and optically addressable defect spin states, including spins in all three with room-temperature quantum coherence. The prevalen…
