States with private correlations but little or no distillable entanglement were recently reported. Here, we consider the secure distribution of such states, i.e., the situation when an adversary gives two parties such states and they have to verify privacy. We present a protocol which enables the parties to extract from such untrusted states an arbitrarily long and secure key, even though the amount of distillable entanglement of the untrusted states can be arbitrarily small.
We prove that the bipartite entangled state of rank three is distillable. So there is no rank three bipartite bound entangled state. By using this fact, We present some families of rank four states that are distillable. We also analyze the relation between the low rank state and the Werner state.
We show the enhancement of distillable key rate for quantum key distribution(QKD), by local filtering, for several bound entangled states. Through our work it becomes evident that the local filtration operations, while transforming one bound entangled state to another, have the potential to increase the utility of the new state for QKD. We demonstrate three examples of `one way distillable key rate' enhancement by local filtering and in this process, discover new bound entangled states which are key distillable.
In this paper, we present sufficient conditions for states to have positive distillable key rate. Exploiting the conditions, we show that the bound entangled states given by Horodecki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 160502 (2005), quant-ph/0506203] have nonzero distillable key rate, and finally exhibit a new class of bound entangled states with positive distillable key rate, but with negative Devetak-Winter lower bound of distillable key rate for the ccq states of their privacy squeezed versions.
The dynamical creation of entanglement between three-level atoms coupled to the common vacuum is investigated. For the class of bound entangled initial states we show that the dynamics of closely separated atoms generates stationary distillable entanglement of asymptotic states. We also find that the effect of delayed sudden birth of distillable entanglement occurs in the case of atoms separated by a distance comparable with the radiation wavelength.
Assuming the validity of a conjecture in quant-ph/9910026 and quant-ph/9910022 we show that the distillable entanglement for two bipartite states, each of which individually has zero distillable entanglement, can be nonzero. We show that this also implies that the distillable entanglement is not a convex function. Our example consists of the tensor product of a bound entangled state based on an unextendible product basis with a Werner state which lies in the class of conjectured undistillable states.
Quantum learning (in metrology and machine learning) involves estimating unknown parameters from measurements of quantum states. The quantum Fisher information matrix can bound the average amount of information learnt about the unknown parameters per experimental trial. In several scenarios, it is advantageous to concentrate information in as few states as possible. Here, we present two "go-go" theorems proving that negativity, a narrower nonclassicality concept than noncommutation, enables unbounded and lossless distillation of Fisher information about multiple parameters in quantum learning.
The monogamy of entanglement is one of the basic quantum mechanical features, which says that when two partners Alice and Bob are more entangled then either of them has to be less entangled with the third party. Here we qualitatively present the converse monogamy of entanglement: given a tripartite pure system and when Alice and Bob are entangled and non-distillable, then either of them is distillable with the third party. Our result leads to the classification of tripartite pure states based on bipartite reduced density operators, which is a novel and effective way to this long-standing probl…
Magic can be distributed non-locally in many-body entangled states, such as the low energy states of condensed matter systems. Using the Bravyi-Kitaev magic state distillation protocol, we find that non-local magic is distillable and can improve the distillation outcome. We analyze a few explicit examples and show that spin squeezing can be used to convert non-distillable states into distillable ones. Our analysis also suggests that the conventional product input states assumed by magic distillation protocols are extremely atypical among general states with distillable magic. It further justif…
We show that, in a multi-party setting, two non-distillable (bound-entangled) states tensored together can make a distillable state. This is an example of true superadditivity of distillable entanglement. We also show that unlockable bound-entangled states cannot be asymptotically unentangled, providing the first proof that some states are truly bound-entangled in the sense of being both non-distillable and non-separable asymptotically.
We provide a class of bound entangled states that have positive distillable secure key rate. The smallest state of this kind is $4 \otimes 4$, which shows that peculiar security contained in bound entangled states does not need high dimensional systems. We show, that for these states a positive key rate can be obtained by {\it one-way} Devetak-Winter protocol. Subsequently the volume of bound entangled key-distillable states in arbitrary dimension is shown to be nonzero. We provide a scheme of verification of cryptographic quality of experimentally prepared state in terms of local observables.…
We show that all entangled Gaussian states of two infinite dimensional systems can be distilled to maximally entangled states in finite dimensions. The distillation protocol involves local squeezing operations, local homodyne measurements with ancilla systems prepared in coherent states as well as local joint measurements of the total number operator of two copies of the state.
Distillable entanglement ($E_d$) is one of the acceptable measures of entanglement of mixed states. Based on discrimination through local operation and classical communication, this paper gives $E_d$ for two classes of orthogonal multipartite maximally entangled states.
We explore classical to quantum transition of correlations by studying the quantum states located just outside of the classically-correlated-states-only neighborhood of the maximally mixed state (the largest separable ball (LSB)). We show that a natural candidate for such states raises the possibility of a layered transition, i.e., an annular region comprising only classical and the classical-like bound entangled states, followed by free or distillable entanglement. Surprisingly, we find the transition to be abrupt for bipartite systems: distillable states emerge arbitrarily close to the LSB. …
We show that any bipartite quantum state of rank four is distillable, when the partial transpose of the state has at least one negative eigenvalue, i.e., the state is NPT. For this purpose we prove that if the partial transpose of a two-qutrit NPT state has two non-positive eigenvalues, then the state is distillable. We further construct a parametrized two-qutrit NPT entangled state of rank five which is not 1-distillable, and show that it is not $n$-distillable for any given $n$ when the parameter is sufficiently small. This state has the smallest rank among all 1-undistillable NPT states. We…
In a multipartite scenario quantum entanglement manifests its most dramatic form when the state is genuinely entangled. Such a state is more beneficial for information theoretic applications if it contains distillable entanglement in every bipartition. It is, therefore, of significant operational interest to identify subspaces of multipartite quantum systems that contain such properties apriori. In this letter, we introduce the notion of unextendible biseparable bases (UBB) that provides an adequate method to construct genuinely entangled subspaces (GES). We provide an explicit construction of…
A nice and interesting property of any pure tensor-product state is that each such state has distillable entangled states at an arbitrarily small distance $ε$ in its neighborhood. We say that such nearby states are $ε$-entangled, and we call the tensor product state in that case, a "boundary separable state", as there is entanglement at any distance from this "boundary". Here we find a huge class of separable states that also share that property mentioned above -- they all have $ε$-entangled states at any small distance in their neighborhood. Furthermore, the entanglement they have is proven t…
We look into multipartite quantum states on which quantum cryptographic protocols including quantum key distribution and quantum secret sharing can be perfectly performed, and define the quantum cryptographic resource distillable rate as the asymptotic rate at which such multipartite state can be distilled from a given multipartite state. Investigating several relations between entanglement and the rate, we show that there exists a multipartite bound entangled state whose quantum cryptographic resource distillable rate is strictly positive, that is, there exists a multipartite entangled state …
We address the presence of non-distillable (bound) entanglement in natural many-body systems. In particular, we consider standard harmonic and spin-1/2 chains, at thermal equilibrium and characterized by few interaction parameters. The existence of bound entanglement is addressed by calculating explicitly the negativity of entanglement for different partitions. This allows to individuate a range of temperatures for which no entanglement can be distilled by means of local operations, despite the system being globally entangled. We discuss how the appearance of bound entanglement can be linked t…
It is well known that any entangled mixed state in $2\otimes 2$ systems can be purified via infinite copies of the mixed state. But can one distill a pure maximally entangled state from finite copies of a mixed state in any bipartite system by local operation and classical communication? This is more meaningful in practical application. We give a necessary and sufficient condition of this distillability. This condition can be expressed as: there exists distillable-subspaces. According to this condition, one can judge whether a mixed state is distillable or not easily. We also analyze some prop…
We show that the phenomenon of superadditivity of distillable entanglement observed in multipartite quantum systems results from the consideration of states created during the execution of the standard end-to-end quantum teleportation protocol (and a few additional local operations and classical communication (LOCC) steps) on a linear chain of singlets. Some of these intermediate states are tensor products of bound-entangled (BE) states, and hence, by construction possess distillable entanglement, which can be unlocked by simply completing the rest of the LOCC operations required by the underl…
A mixed quantum state shared between two parties is said to be distillable if, by means of a protocol involving only local quantum operations and classical communication, the two parties can transform some number of copies of that state into a single shared pair of qubits having high fidelity with a maximally entangled state state. In this paper it is proved that there exist states that are distillable, but for which an arbitrarily large number of copies is required before any distillation procedure can produce a shared pair of qubits with even a small amount of entanglement. Specifically, for…
In this work, we investigate what kinds of quantum states are feasible to perform perfectly secure secret sharing, and present its necessary and sufficient conditions. We also show that the states are bipartite distillable for all bipartite splits, and hence the states could be distillable into the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. We finally exhibit a class of secret-sharing states, which have an arbitrarily small amount of bipartite distillable entanglement for a certain split.
Four-qubit Smolin bound entangled state has a distinct feature: the state is not distillable when every qubit is seperated from each other; but it makes two separated qubit entangled if the other qubits group together. Here the feature is applied to quantum secret sharing, a QSS protocol similar to Ekert 91 protocol of QKD is proposed. The security problem, disadvantage and advantageof this protocol are disscused.

We devise a protocol in which general non-classical multipartite correlations produce a physically relevant effect, leading to the creation of bipartite entanglement. In particular, we show that the relative entropy of quantumness, which measures all non-classical correlations among subsystems of a quantum system, is equivalent to and can be operationally interpreted as the minimum distillable entanglement generated between the system and local ancillae in our protocol. We emphasize the key role of state mixedness in maximizing non-classicality: Mixed entangled states can be arbitrarily more n…
We analyze a class of entangled states for bipartite $d \otimes d$ systems, with $d$ non-prime. The entanglement of such states is revealed by the construction of canonically associated entanglement witnesses. The structure of the states is very simple and similar to the one of isotropic states: they are a mixture of a separable and a pure entangled state whose supports are orthogonal. Despite such simple structure, in an opportune interval of the mixing parameter their entanglement is not revealed by partial transposition nor by the realignment criterion, i.e. by any permutational criterion i…
Recently the explicit applicability of bound entanglement in quantum cryptography has been shown. In this paper some of recent results respecting this topic are reviewed. In particular relevant notions and definitions are reminded. The new construction of bound entangled states containing secure correlations is presented. It provides low dimensional 6\otimes6 bound entangled states with nonzero distillable key.
We study the relation between violation of Bell inequalities and distillability properties of quantum states. Recently, Dür has shown that there are some multiparticle bound entangled states, non-separable and non-distillable, that violate a Bell inequality. We prove that for all the states violating this inequality there exist at least one splitting of the parties into two groups such that some pure-state entanglement can be distilled, obtaining a connection between Bell inequalities and bipartite distillable entanglement.
We present a family of three-qubit quantum states with a basic local hidden variable model. Any von Neumann measurement can be described by a local model for these states. We show that some of these states are genuine three-partite entangled and also distillable. The generalization for larger dimensions or higher number of parties is also discussed. As a byproduct, we present symmetric extensions of two-qubit Werner states.
We discuss the notion of bound entanglement (BE) for continuous variables (CV). We show that the set of non--distillable states (NDS) for CV is nowhere dense in the set of all states, i.e., the states of infinite--dimensional bipartite systems are generically distillable. This automatically implies that the sets of separable states, entangled states with positive partial transpose, and bound entangled states are also nowhere dense in the set of all states. All these properties significantly distinguish quantum CV systems from the spin like ones. The aspects of the definition of BE for CV is al…
We use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to experimentally generate a bound entangled (more precisely: pseudo bound entangled) state, i.e. a quantum state which is non-distillable but nevertheless entangled. Our quantum system consists of three qubits. We characterize the produced state via state tomography to show that the created state has a positive partial transposition with respect to any bipartite splitting, and we use a witness operator to prove its entanglement.
The disentangling effect of repeated applications of the bit flip channel (I\otimesσ_x) on bipartite qubit systems is analyzed. It is found that the rate of loss of entanglement is not uniform over all states. The distillable entanglement of maximally entangled states decreases faster than that of less entangled states. The analysis is also generalized to noise channels of the form n.sigma.
Construction of genuinely entangled multipartite subspaces with certain characteristics has become a relevant task in various branches of quantum information. Here we show that such subspaces can be obtained from an arbitrary collection of bipartite entangled subspaces under joining of their adjacent subsystems. In addition, it is shown that direct sums of such constructions under certain conditions are genuinely entangled. These facts are then used in detecting entanglement of tensor products of mixed states and constructing subspaces that are distillable across every bipartite cut, where for…
We derive a new inequality for entanglement for a mixed four-partite state. Employing this inequality, we present a one-shot lower bound for entanglement cost and prove that entanglement cost is strictly larger than zero for any entangled state. We demonstrate that irreversibility occurs in the process of formation for all non-distillable entangled states. In this way we solve a long standing problem, of how "real" is entanglement of bound entangled states. Using the new inequality we also prove impossibility of local-cloning of a known entangled state.
The determination of genuine entanglement is a central problem in quantum information processing. We investigate the tripartite state as the tensor product of two bipartite entangled states by merging two systems. We show that the tripartite state is a genuinely entangled state when the range of both bipartite states are entanglement-breaking subspaces. We further investigate the tripartite state when one of the two bipartite states has rank two. Our results provide the latest progress on a conjecture proposed in the paper [Yi Shen $\textit{et al}$, J. Phys. A 53, 125302 (2020)]. We apply our …
It is shown that (i) all entangled states can be mapped by single-copy measurements into probability distributions containing secret correlations, and (ii) if a probability distribution obtained from a quantum state contains secret correlations, then this state has to be entangled. These results prove the existence of a two-way connection between secret and quantum correlations in the process of preparation. They also imply that either it is possible to map any bound entangled state into a distillable probability distribution or bipartite bound information exists.
We provide a class of bound entangled states that have positive distillable secure key rate. The smallest state of this kind is 4 \bigotimes 4. Our class is a generalization of the class presented in [1] (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 54, 2621 (2008); arXiv:quant-ph/0506203). It is much wider, containing, in particular, states from the boundary of PPT entangled states (all of the states in the class in [1] were of this kind) but also states inside the set of PPT entangled states, even, approaching the separable states. This generalization comes with a price: for the wider class a positive key rate r…
Bound entanglement, being entangled yet not distillable, is essential to our understandings of the relations between nonlocality and entanglement besides its applications in certain quantum information tasks. Recently, bound entangled states that violate a Bell inequality have been constructed for a two-qutrit system, disproving a conjecture by Peres that bound entanglement is local. Here we shall construct such kind of nonlocal bound entangled states for all finite dimensions larger than two, making possible their experimental demonstrations on most general systems. We propose a Bell inequali…
Consider entanglement concentration schemes that convert n identical copies of a pure state into a maximally entangled state of a desired size with success probability being close to one in the asymptotic limit. We give the distillable entanglement, the number of Bell pairs distilled per copy, as a function of an error exponent, which represents the rate of decrease in failure probability as n tends to infinity. The formula fills the gap between the least upper bound of distillable entanglement in probabilistic concentration, which is the well-known entropy of entanglement, and the maximum att…
Grover's quantum algorithm for an unstructured search problem and the Count algorithm by Brassard et al. are generalized to the case when the initial state is arbitrarily and maximally entangled. This ansatz might be relevant with quantum subroutines, when the computational qubits and the environment are coupled, and in general when the control over the quantum system is partial.
We relate the problem of irreversibility of entanglement with the recently defined measures of quantum correlation - quantum discord and one-way quantum deficit. We show that the entanglement of formation is always strictly larger than the coherent information and the entanglement cost is also larger in most cases. We prove irreversibility of entanglement under LOCC for a family of entangled states. This family is a generalization of the maximally correlated states for which we also give an analytic expression for the distillable entanglement, the relative entropy of entanglement, the distilla…
We obtain the necessary and sufficient separability and distillability conditions of mixtures of a maximally entangled state and the completely separable state in relativistic setting. In an inertial frame we study the entanglement under Wigner rotations induced by Lorentz transformations. We also investigate the mixed state entanglement of scalar and Dirac fields as seen by two relatively accelerated observers. For scalar field we show that in infinite acceleration limit the state has no longer distillable entanglement. For dirac field the entanglement in the infinite acceleration limit is fi…
We analyze the existence of activable bound entangled states in multi-particle systems. We first give a series of examples which illustrate some different ways in which bound entangled states can be activated by letting some of the parties to share maximally entangled states. Then, we derive necessary conditions for a state to be distillable as well as to be activable. These conditions turn out to be also sufficient for a certain family of multi-qubit states. We use these results to explicitely to construct states displaying novel properties related to bound entanglement and its activation.
We examine the perfect cloning of non-local, orthogonal states with only local operations and classical communication. We provide a complete characterisation of the states that can be cloned under these restrictions, and their relation to distinguishability. We also consider the case of catalytic cloning, which we show provides no enhancement to the set of clonable states.
We develop a formalism for distilling a classical key from a quantum state in a systematic way, expanding on our previous work on secure key from bound entanglement [K. Horodecki et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94 (2005)]. More detailed proofs, discussion and examples are provided of the main results. Namely, we demonstrate that all quantum cryptographic protocols can be recast in a way which looks like entanglement theory, with the only change being that instead of distilling EPR pairs, the parties distill private states. The form of these general private states are given, and we show that there ar…
We characterize the set of shared quantum states which contain a cryptographically private key. This allows us to recast the theory of privacy as a paradigm closely related to that used in entanglement manipulation. It is shown that one can distill an arbitrarily secure key from bound entangled states. There are also states which have less distillable private key than the entanglement cost of the state. In general the amount of distillable key is bounded from above by the relative entropy of entanglement. Relationships between distillability and distinguishability are found for a class of stat…
We present a convenient and efficient scheme to generate arbitrarily multipartite continuous-variable entanglement via mechanical oscillator displacement induced by two strong input pump fields in the conventional single-cavity optomechanical system. It is shown that multipartite entanglement among the outputs of the two pump fields and any number of relatively weak probe fields can be realized and optimized when the two pump fields with suitable amplitude ratio and relative initial phase are, respectively, tuned to the red and blue mechanical sidebands of a single cavity mode and each probe f…
We prove an analytic positive lower bound for the geometric distance between entangled positive partial transpose (PPT) states of a broad class and any private state that delivers one secure key bit. Our proof holds for any Hilbert space of finite dimension. Although our result is proven for a specific class of PPT states, we show that our bound nonetheless holds for all known entangled PPT states with non-zero distillable key rates whether or not they are in our special class.
We investigate entanglement properties of multipartite states under the influence of decoherence. We show that the lifetime of (distillable) entanglement for GHZ-type superposition states decreases with the size of the system, while for a class of other states -namely all graph states with constant degree- the lifetime is independent of the system size. We show that these results are largely independent of the specific decoherence model and are in particular valid for all models which deal with individual couplings of particles to independent environments, described by some quantum optical mas…

We investigate the use of noisy entanglement as a resource in classical communication via a quantum channel. In particular, we are interested in the question whether for any entangled state, including bound entangled states, there exists a quantum channel the classical capacity of which can be increased by providing the state as an additional resource. We partially answer this question by showing, for any entangled state, the existence of a quantum memory channel the feedback-assisted classical capacity with product encodings of which can be increased by using the state as a resource. Using a …
