We consider quantum kinetics of an open quantum system in the presence of periodic fields designed to suppress the internal evolution and shield the system from generic low-frequency environment (refocusing or dynamical decoupling in application to multi-qubit systems). Assuming that the refocusing has order K, that is, for frozen environment the cumulant expansion of the evolution operator over the period tau begins with the term ~tau^(K+1), we trace the associated cancellations in the kernel of the quantum kinetic equation in the Floquet formalism and characterize the remaining decoherence processes.
The effects of dissipation on a holonomic quantum computation scheme are analyzed within the quantum-jump approach. We extend to the non-Abelian case the refocusing strategies formerly introduced for (Abelian) geometric computation. We show how double loop symmetrization schemes allow one to get rid of the unwanted influence of dissipation in the no-jump trajectory.
Refocusing of a quantum system in NMR and quantum information processing can be achieved by application of short pulses according to the methods of spin echo and dynamical decoupling. However, these methods are strongly limited by the requirement that the evolution of the system between pulses be suitably small. Here we show how refocusing may be achieved for arbitrary (but time-independent) evolution of the system between pulses. We first illustrate the procedure with one-qubit systems, and then generalize to $d$-dimensional quantum systems. We also give an application of this result to quant…
We consider the problem of quantum communication mediated by an optical refocusing system, which is schematized as a thin lens with a finite pupil. This model captures the basic features of all those situations in which a signal is either refocused by a repeater for long distance communication, or it is focused on a detector prior to the information decoding process. Introducing a general method for linear optical systems, we compute the communication capacity of the refocusing apparatus. Although the finite extension of the pupil may cause loss of information, we show that the presence of the…
Separate addressing of individual qubits is a challenging requirement for scalable quantum computation, and crosstalk between operations on neighboring qubits remains as a significant source of noise for current experimental implementation of multi-qubit platforms. We propose a scheme based on spatial refocusing from interference of several coherent laser beams to significantly reduce the crosstalk noise for any type of quantum gates. A general framework is developed for the spatial refocusing technique, in particular with practical Gaussian beams, and we show under typical experimental condit…
Refocusing, or dynamical decoupling, is a coherent control technique where the internal dynamics of a quantum system is effectively averaged out by an application of specially designed driving fields. The method has originated in nuclear magnetic resonance, but it was independently discovered in atomic physics as a ``coherent destruction of tunneling''. Present work deals with the analysis of the performance of ``soft'' refocusing pulses and pulse sequences in protecting the coherence of a qubit system coupled to a quantum oscillator.
We present a protocol for directly detecting time-dependent magnetic field waveforms with a quantum two-level system. Our method is based on a differential refocusing of segments of the waveform using spin echoes. The sequence can be repeated to increase the sensitivity to small signals. The frequency bandwidth is intrinsically limited by the duration of the refocusing pulses. We demonstrate detection of arbitrary waveforms with $\sim 20 {\rm ns}$ time resolution and $\sim 4μ{\rm T}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ field sensitivity using the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.
A wide variety of communication channels employ the quantized electromagnetic field to convey information. Their communication capacity crucially depends on losses associated to spatial characteristics of the channel such as diffraction and antenna design. Here we focus on the communication via a finite pupil, showing that diffraction is formally described as a memory channel. By exploiting this equivalence we then compute the communication capacity of an optical refocusing system, modeled as a converging lens. Even though loss of information originates from the finite pupil of the lens, we sh…
We consider the effect of broadband decoherence on the performance of refocusing sequences, having in mind applications of dynamical decoupling in concatenation with quantum error correcting codes as the first stage of coherence protection. Specifically, we construct cumulant expansions of effective decoherence operators for a qubit driven by a pulse of a generic symmetric shape, and for several sequences of $π$- and $π/2$-pulses. While, in general, the performance of soft pulses in decoupling sequences in the presence of Markovian decoherence is worse than that of the ideal $δ$-pulses, it can…
The theory of weak quantum measurements is developed for quantum dot spin qubits. Building on recent experiments, we propose a control cycle to prepare, manipulate, weakly measure, and perform quantum state tomography. This is accomplished using a combination of the physics of electron spin resonance, spin blockade, and Coulomb blockade, resulting in a charge transport process. We investigate the influence of the surrounding nuclear spin environment, and find a regime where this environment significantly simplifies the dynamics of the weak measurement process, making this theoretical proposal …
A Quantum Kinetic Master Equation (QKME) for bosonic atoms is formulated. It is a quantum stochastic equation for the kinetics of a dilute quantum Bose gas, and describes the behavior and formation of Bose condensation. The key assumption in deriving the QKME is a Markov approximation for the atomic collision terms. In the present paper the basic structure of the theory is developed, and approximations are stated and justified to delineate the region of validity of the theory. Limiting cases of the QKME include the Quantum Boltzmann master equation and the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation, as well a…
The tomographic probability distribution is used to decribe the kinetic equations for open quantum systems. Damped oscillator is studied. Purity parameter evolution for different damping regime is considered.
We propose a solution for the inverse kinetic theory for quantum hydrodynamic equations associated to the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation. It is shown that an inverse kinetic equation of the form of the Vlasov equation can be non-uniquely determined under suitable mathematical prescriptions.
We propose and investigate a procedure to measure, at least in principle, a positive quantum version of the local kinetic energy density. This procedure is based, under certain idealized limits, on the detection rate of photons emitted by moving atoms which are excited by a localized laser beam. The same type of experiment, but in different limits, can also provide other non positive-definite versions of the kinetic energy density. A connection with quantum arrival time distributions is discussed.
We present results of simulations of a em quantum Boltzmann master equation (QBME) describing the kinetics of a dilute Bose gas confined in a trapping potential in the regime of Bose condensation. The QBME is the simplest version of a quantum kinetic master equations derived in previous work. We consider two cases of trapping potentials: a 3D square well potential with periodic boundary conditions, and an isotropic harmonic oscillator. We discuss the stationary solutions and relaxation to equilibrium. In particular, we calculate particle distribution functions, fluctuations in the occupation n…
The concept of phase space distribution functions and their evolution is used in the case of en enlarged phase space. In particular, we include the intrinsic spin of particles and present a quantum kinetic evolution equation for a scalar quasi-distribution function. In contrast to the proper Wigner transformation technique, for which we expect the corresponding quasi-distribution function to be a complex matrix, we introduce a spin projection operator for the density matrix in order to obtain the aforementioned scalar quasi-distribution function. There is a close correspondence between this pr…
We strengthen the connection between Information Theory and quantum-mechanical systems using a recently developed dequantization procedure whereby quantum fluctuations latent in the quantum momentum are suppressed. The dequantization procedure results in a decomposition of the quantum kinetic energy as the sum of a classical term and a purely quantum term. The purely quantum term, which results from the quantum fluctuations, is essentially identical to the Fisher information. The classical term is complementary to the Fisher information and, in this sense, it plays a role analogous to that of …
A set of quantum hydrodynamic equations are derived from the moments of the electrostatic mean-field Wigner kinetic equation. No assumptions are made on the particular local equilibrium or on the statistical ensemble wave functions. Quantum diffraction effects appear explicitly only in the transport equation for the heat flux triad, which is the third-order moment of the Wigner pseudo-distribution. The general linear dispersion relation is derived, from which a quantum modified Bohm-Gross relation is recovered in the long wave-length limit. Nonlinear, traveling wave solutions are numerically f…
We discuss the possibility to formulate the dynamics of spin states described by the Schrodinger equation for pure states and the von Neumann equation (as well as the GKSL equation) for mixed states in the form of quantum kinetic equations for probability distributions. We review an approach to the spin-state description by means of the probability distributions of dichotomic random variables.
Avoiding the loss of coherence of quantum mechanical states is an important prerequisite for quantum information processing. Dynamical decoupling (DD) is one of the most effective experimental methods for maintaining coherence, especially when one can access only the qubit-system and not its environment (bath). It involves the application of pulses to the system whose net effect is a reversal of the system-environment interaction. In any real system, however, the environment is not static, and therefore the reversal of the system-environment interaction becomes imperfect if the spacing between…
Description of time evolution of the relativistic unstable electromagnetic system consisting of Fermi-Dirac particle interacting with electromagnetic field, in the framework of the Liouville space extension of quantum mechanics is done. The work was carried out on the basis of Prigogine's unified formulation of quantum and kinetic dynamics. The eigenvalues problem for the relativistic Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic system was solved. The obtained results can be used as the ground for the further studies of the observed physical processes such as bremsstrahlung, relaxation of excited states…
The gauge invariant electromagnetic Wigner equation is taken as the basis for a fluid-like system describing quantum plasmas, derived from the moments of the gauge invariant Wigner function. The use of the standard, gauge dependent Wigner function is shown to produce inconsistencies, if a direct correspondence principle is applied. The propagation of linear transverse waves is considered and shown to be in agreement with the kinetic theory in the long wavelength approximation, provided an adequate closure is chosen for the macroscopic equations. A general recipe to solve the closure problem is…
The energy dissipation in a gas of structured objects, e.g. molecules, is considered in density matrix formalism. It is shown that the macroscopic irreversibility of the kinetic processes can be considered as a consequence of the microscopic operator ordering. Our approach is free of any special assumptions on the space-time geometry, except for the general causality assumptions, so it can be applied to a wide variety of processes, from the cosmological processes at Big Bang stage till the energy dissipation in molecular gases.
We stress the relevance of the two features of translational invariance and atomic nature of the gas in the quantum description of the motion of a massive test particle in a gas, corresponding to the original picture of Einstein used in the characterization of Brownian motion. The master equation describing the reduced dynamics of the test particle is of Lindblad form and complies with the requirement of covariance under translations.
We apply a new formalism to derive the higher-order quantum kinetic expansion (QKE) for studying dissipative dynamics in a general quantum network coupled with an arbitrary thermal bath. The dynamics of system population is described by a time-convoluted kinetic equation, where the time-nonlocal rate kernel is systematically expanded on the order of off-diagonal elements of the system Hamiltonian. In the second order, the rate kernel recovers the expression of the noninteracting-blip approximation (NIBA) method. The higher-order corrections in the rate kernel account for the effects of the mul…
1/f noise at arbitrary low frequences is the way of existence of irreversibility in thermal motion governed by reversible laws of mechanics. This statement not once was confirmed in statistical mechanics beyond its traditional kinetical roughenings. Here we point out that in case of quantum statistical mechanics in principle it is sufficient to avoid such the roughening as the "Fermi golden rule". This means taking into account the time-energy uncertainty principle (time-frequency one in classical limit) and thus uncertainties in characteristics of real collisions and scatterings of particles …
Time reversal symmetry is a fundamental property of many quantum mechanical systems. The relation between statistical physics and time reversal is subtle and not all statistical theories conserve this particular symmetry, most notably hydrodynamic equations and kinetic equations such as the Boltzmann equation. In this article it is shown analytically that quantum kinetic generalizations of the Boltzmann equation that are derived using the nonequilibrium Green functions formalism as well as all approximations that stem from $Φ$-derivable selfenergies are time reversal invariant.
A concept of Kinetic Energy in Quantum Mechanics is analyzed. Kinetic Energy is not zero in many cases where there are no motion and flux. This paradox can be understood, using expansion of the wave function in Fourier integral, that is on the basis of virtual plane waves.
The quantum electromagnetic dielectric tensor for a multi species plasma is re-derived from the gauge invariant Wigner-Maxwell system and presented under a form very similar to the classical one. The resulting expression is then applied to a quantum kinetic theory of the electromagnetic filamentation instability. Comparison is made with the quantum fluid theory including a Bohm pressure term, and with the cold classical plasma result. A number of analytical expressions are derived for the cutoff wave vector, the largest growth rate and the most unstable wave vector.
From the perspective of Markovian piecewise deterministic processes (PDPs), we investigate the derivation of a kinetic uncertainty relation (KUR), which was originally proposed in Markovian open quantum systems. First, stationary distributions of classical PDPs are explicitly constructed. Then, a tilting method is used to derive a rate functional of large deviations. Finally, based on an improved approximation scheme, we recover the KUR. These classical results are directly extended to the open quantum systems. We use a driven two-level quantum system to exemplify the quantum results.
Recently it has been shown that the spinnless one particle quantum mechanics can be obtained in the framework of entirely classical subquantum kinetics. In the present paper we argue that, within the same scheme and without any extra assumption, it is possible to obtain both the non relativistic quantum mechanics with spin, in the presence of an arbitrary external electromagnetic field, as well as the nonlinear quantum mechanics. We introduce a quantum generalization of classical kinetic Ising models, described by a certain class of quantum many body master equations. Similarly to kinetic Ising models with detailed balance that are equivalent to certain Hamiltonian systems, our models reduce to a set of Hamiltonian systems determining the dynamics of the elements of the many body density matrix. The ground states of these Hamiltonians are well described by matrix product, or pair entangled projected states. We discuss critical properties of such Hamiltonians, as well as entanglement properties of their low energy state…
Specific nonequilibrium states of the quantum harmonic oscillator described by the Lindblad equation have been hereby suggested. This equation makes it possible to determine time-varying effects produced by statistical operator or statistical matrix. Thus, respective representation-varied equilibrium statistical matrixes have been found. Specific mean value equations have been found and their equilibrium solutions have been obtained.
Coherent energy transfer in pigment-protein complexes has been studied by mapping the quantum network to a kinetic network. This gives an analytic way to find parameter values for optimal transfer efficiency. In the case of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex, the comparison of quantum and kinetic network evolution shows that dephasing-assisted energy transfer is driven by the two-site coherent interaction, and not system-wide coherence. Using the Schur complement, we find a new kinetic network that gives a closer approximation to the quantum network by including all multi-site coherence co…
We employ a recently formulated dequantization procedure to obtain an exact expression for the kinetic energy which is applicable to all kinetic-energy functionals. We express the kinetic energy of an N-electron system as the sum of an N-electron classical kinetic energy and an N-electron purely quantum kinetic energy arising from the quantum fluctuations that turn the classical momentum into the quantum momentum. This leads to an interesting analogy with Nelson's stochastic approach to quantum mechanics, which we use to conceptually clarify the physical nature of part of the kinetic-energy fu…
We propose an approach to the quantum-classical correspondence based on a deformation of the momentum and kinetic operators of quantum mechanics. Making use of the factorization method, we construct classical versions of the momentum and kinetic operators which, in addition to the standard quantum expressions, contain terms that are functionals of the N-particle density. We show that this implementation of the quantum-classical correspondence is related to Witten's deformation of the exterior derivative and Laplacian, introduced in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The correspon…
We propose a general framework of quantum kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm, based on a stochastic representation of a series expansion of the quantum evolution. Two approaches have been developed in the context of quantum many-body spin dynamics, using different decomposition of the Hamiltonian. The effectiveness of the methods is tested for many-body spin systems up to 40 spins.
We develop a rigorous formalism for the description of the evolution of states of quantum many-particle systems in terms of a one-particle density operator. For initial states which are specified in terms of a one-particle density operator the equivalence of the description of the evolution of quantum many-particle states by the Cauchy problem of the quantum BBGKY hierarchy and by the Cauchy problem of the generalized quantum kinetic equation together with a sequence of explicitly defined functionals of a solution of stated kinetic equation is established in the space of trace class operators.…
New type of quantum kinetic equations of the Fermi particles are derived. The Bogolyubov's type of dispersion relation, which is valid for the Bose fluid, is disclosed. Model of neutral Bose atoms in dense strongly coupled plasmas with attractive interaction is discussed. A set of fluid equations describing the quantum plasmas is obtained. Furthermore, the equation of state of a degenerate Fermi plasma is derived.
Path integral implementation of the quantum instanton approximation currently belongs among the most accurate methods for computing quantum rate constants and kinetic isotope effects, but its use has been limited due to the rather high computational cost. Here we demonstrate that the efficiency of quantum instanton calculations of the kinetic isotope effects can be increased by orders of magnitude by combining two approaches: The convergence to the quantum limit is accelerated by employing high-order path integral factorizations of the Boltzmann operator, while the statistical convergence is i…
We present a microscopic approach to quantum dissipation and sketch the derivation of the kinetic equation describing the evolution of a simple quantum system in interaction with a complex quantum system. A typical quantum complex system is modeled by means of parametric banded random matrices coupled to the subsystem of interest. We do not assume the weak coupling limit and allow for an independent dynamics of the ``reservoir''. We discuss the reasons for having a new theoretical approach and the new elements introduced by us. The present approach incorporates known limits and previous result…
We present a new way of quantum kinetic equation derivation. This method appears as a natural generalization of the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic method. Kinetic equations are derived for different system of particles. First of all we consider quantum plasma and pay special attention to the spin evolution. We show that we need a set of two kinetic equations for description of spinning particles. One of these equations is the equation for distribution function, however this equation contains new function, even in the self-consistent field approximation. This is a spin-distribution function…
We employ quantum kinetic theory to investigate local quantum physics in the background of spherically symmetric and neutral black holes formed through the gravitational collapse. For this purpose in mind, we derive and study the covariant Wigner distribution function $\mathcal{W}(x,p)$ near to and far away from the black-hole horizon. We find that the local density of the particle number is negative in the near-horizon region, while the entropy density is imaginary. These pose a question whether kinetic theory is applicable in the near-horizon region. We elaborate on that and propose a possib…
We develop a rigorous formalism for the description of the evolution of observables of quantum systems of particles in the mean-field scaling limit. The corresponding asymptotics of a solution of the initial-value problem of the dual quantum BBGKY hierarchy is constructed. Moreover, links of the evolution of marginal observables and the evolution of quantum states described in terms of a one-particle marginal density operator are established. Such approach gives the alternative description of the kinetic evolution of quantum many-particle systems to generally accepted approach on basis of kine…
In the paper we discuss possible approaches to the problem of the rigorous derivation of quantum kinetic equations from underlying many-particle dynamics. For the description of a many-particle evolution we construct solutions of the Cauchy problems of the BBGKY hierarchy and the dual BBGKY hierarchy in suitable Banach spaces. In the framework of the conventional approach to the description of kinetic evolution the mean-field asymptotics of the quantum BBGKY hierarchy solution is constructed. We develop also alternative approaches. One method is based on the construction of the solution asympt…
We present a derivation of Markovian master equation for the out of equilibrium quantum dot connected to two superconducting reservoirs, which are described by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians and have the chemical potentials, the temperatures, and the complex order parameters as the relevant quantities. We consider a specific example in which the quantum dot is represented by the Anderson impurity model and study the transport properties, proximity effect and Andreev bound states in equilibrium and far from equilibrium setups.
The article provides an overview of some advances in the mathematical understanding of the nature of the kinetic equations of quantum systems of many particles. The fundamental equations of modern mathematical physics are studied, in particular, the hierarchies of evolution equations of quantum systems and their asymptotic behavior described by kinetic nonlinear equations.
Plasma physics give an example of physical system of particles with the long range interaction. At small velocity of particles we can consider the plasma approximately as a system of particles with the Coulomb interaction. The Coulomb interaction is isotropic. Systems of spinning neutral particles have long-range anisotropic interparticle interaction. So, they can reveal more reach properties than plasma. Furthermore for studying of systems of spinning particles we can develop kinetic and hydrodynamic methods analogous to used for the plasma. We derive kinetic equations by a new method, which …
