A quantum model of a heat engine resembling the Otto cycle is employed to explore strategies to suppress frictional losses. These losses are caused by the inability of the engine's working medium to follow adiabatically the change in the Hamiltonian during the expansion and compression stages. By adding external noise to the engine, frictional losses can be suppressed.

In this work, we introduce a three-stroke quantum engine with a single-qubit work-ing substance whose cycle consists of two strokes arise due to performing two distinctgeneral quantum measurements and it is completed by thermalization through contactwith a finite temperature thermal reservoir. It is demonstrated that energy is importedinto the engine by first measurement channel and work (usefulenergy) is extracted fromit, in a frictionless isentropic manner, by the second measurement channel. It is par-ticularly shown that the engine is capable to have perfect efficiency. In continuation,we e…
We study how a quantum heat engine based on a single trapped ion performs in finite time. The always-on thermal environment acts like the hot bath, while the motional degree of freedom of the ion plays the role of the effective cold bath. The hot isochoric stroke is implemented via the interaction of the ion with its hot environment, while a projective measurement of the internal state of the ion is performed as an equivalent to the cold isochoric stroke. The expansion and compression strokes are implemented via suitable change in applied magnetic field. We study in detail how the finite durat…
A single driven spin is investigated as the working substance of a six-stroke irreversible quantum Carnot cycle. The role of inner friction associated with the finite-time adiabatic transformations on the cycle efficiency and the harvested work are investigated in detail. The inner friction is found to significantly reduce the work output and the cycle efficiency which can make the engine incapable to produce positive work for the too fast adiabatic transformations. The ideal Carnot efficiency is found to be reached only for the quasi-static transformations. A deviation of the cycle efficiency…
We consider a finite-time quantum Otto heat engine that consists of two isochoric (thermal-contact) process, where the system is alternatively coupled to a hot squeezed and a cold thermal reservoir, and two unitary driven strokes, where the system is isolated from these two baths and its von Neumann entropy keeps constant. Both quantum inner friction and coherence are generated along the driven stroke and coherence cannot be fully erased after the finite-time hot isochore. Using full counting statistics, we present the probability distribution functions of heat injection and total work per cyc…

The Carnot cycle combines reversible isothermal and adiabatic strokes to obtain optimal efficiency, at the expense of a vanishing power output. Quantum Carnot-analog cycles are constructed and solved, operating irreversibly at non-vanishing power. Swift thermalization is obtained in the isotherms utilizing a shortcut to equilibrium protocols and the adiabats employ frictionless unitary shortcuts. The working medium in this study is composed of a particle in a driven harmonic trap. For this system, we solve the dynamics employing a generalized canonical state. Such a description incorporates bo…
We show that finite system-reservoir coupling imposes a distinct quantum limit on the performance of a non-equilibrium quantum heat engine. Even in the absence of quantum friction along the isentropic strokes, finite system-reservoir coupling induces correlations that result in the generation of coherence between the energy eigenstates of the working system. This coherence acts to hamper the engine's power output, as well as the efficiency with which it can convert heat into useful work, and cannot be captured by a standard Born-Markov analysis of the system-reservoir interactions.
We show that the inability of a quantum Otto cycle to reach a limit cycle is connected with the propagator of the cycle being non-compact. For a working fluid consisting of quantum harmonic oscillators, the transition point in parameter space where this instability occurs is associated with a non-hermitian degeneracy (exceptional point) of the eigenvalues of the propagator. In particular, a third-order exceptional point is observed at the transition from the region where the eigenvalues are complex numbers to the region where all the eigenvalues are real. Within this region we find another exc…
The working substance fueling a quantum heat engine may contain coherence in its energy basis, depending on the dynamics of the engine cycle. In some models of quantum Otto heat engines, energy coherence has been associated with entropy production and quantum friction. We considered a quantum Otto heat engine operating at finite time. Coherence is generated and the working substance does not reach thermal equilibrium after interacting with the hot heat reservoir, leaving the working substance in a state with residual energy coherence. We observe an interference-like effect between the residual…
