Two methods for constructing quantum LDPC codes are presented. We explain how to overcome the difficulty of finding a set of low weight generators for the stabilizer group of the code. Both approaches are based on some graph representation of the generators of the stabilizer group and on simple local rules that ensure commutativity. A message passing algorithm for generic quantum LDPC codes is also introduced. Finally, we provide two specific examples of quantum LDPC codes of rate 1/2 obtained by our methods, together with a numerical simulation of their performance over the depolarizing channel.
Due to their fast decoding algorithms, quantum generalizations of low-density parity check, or LDPC, codes have been investigated as a solution to the problem of decoherence in fragile quantum states. However, the additional twisted inner product requirements of quantum stabilizer codes force four-cycles and eliminate the possibility of randomly generated quantum LDPC codes. Moreover, the classes of quantum LDPC codes discovered thus far generally have unknown or small minimum distance, or a fixed rate. This paper presents several new classes of quantum LDPC codes constructed from finite proje…
In this paper, we discuss a construction of CSS codes derived from pairs of practical irregular LDPC codes. Our design of irregular LDPC codes is based the design written in the standardization of IEEE802.16e. Our research has tried to make a CSS code with a pair of LDPC codes of type IEEE802.16e. To our regret, we proved that it was impossible to construct a CSS code if one of classical codes was of type IEEE802.16e with rate 1/2 and 2/3B. We would like to report the discussion on its impossibility in this paper. This is the first paper to analyze the possibility of a CSS code construction by…
We analyze the four dimensional toric code in a hyperbolic space and show that it has a classical error correction procedure which runs in almost linear time and can be parallelized to almost constant time, giving an example of a quantum LDPC code with linear rate and efficient error correction.
In the practical continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system, the postprocessing process, particularly the error correction part, significantly impacts the system performance. Multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes are suitable for CV-QKD systems because of their Shannon-limit-approaching performance at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, the process of designing a low-rate MET-LDPC code with good performance is extremely complicated. Thus, we introduce Raptor-like LDPC (RL-LDPC) codes into the CV-QKD system, exhibiting both the rate compatible prope…
We present a linked-cluster technique for calculating the distance of a quantum LDPC code. It offers an advantage over existing deterministic techniques for codes with small relative distances (which includes all known families of quantum LDPC codes), and over the probabilistic technique for codes with sufficiently high rates.
The techniques of distance verification known for general linear codes are re-applied to quantum stabilizer codes. Then distance verification is addressed for classical and quantum LDPC codes. New complexity bounds for distance verification with provable performance are derived using the average weight spectra of the ensembles of LDPC codes. These bounds are expressed in terms of the erasure-correcting capacity of the corresponding ensemble. We also present a new irreducible-cluster technique that can be applied to any LDPC code and takes advantage of parity-checks' sparsity for both classical…
We study classical and quantum LDPC codes of constant rate obtained by the lifted product construction over non-abelian groups. We show that the obtained families of quantum LDPC codes are asymptotically good, which proves the qLDPC conjecture. Moreover, we show that the produced classical LDPC codes are also asymptotically good and locally testable with constant query and soundness parameters, which proves a well-known conjecture in the field of locally testable codes.
The current best asymptotic lower bound on the minimum distance of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate is logarithmic in the blocklength. We propose a construction of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate and prove that the minimum distance grows proportionally to the square root of the blocklength.
Quantum LDPC codes are a promising direction for low overhead quantum computing. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the Union-Find decoder as adecoder for quantum LDPC codes. We prove that this decoder corrects all errors with weight up to An^α for some A, α > 0 for different classes of quantum LDPC codes such as toric codes and hyperbolic codes in any dimension D \geq 3 and quantum expander codes. To prove this result, we introduce a notion of covering radius which measures the spread of an error from its syndrome. We believe this notion could find application beyond the decoding p…
Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are a significant class of classical codes with many applications. Several good LDPC codes have been constructed using random, algebraic, and finite geometries approaches, with containing cycles of length at least six in their Tanner graphs. However, it is impossible to design a self-orthogonal parity check matrix of an LDPC code without introducing cycles of length four. In this paper, a new class of quantum LDPC codes based on lines and points of finite geometries is constructed. The parity check matrices of these codes are adapted to be self-orthogonal …
We face the following dilemma for designing low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) for quantum error correction. 1) The row weights of parity-check should be large: The minimum distances are bounded above by the minimum row weights of parity-check matrices of constituent classical codes. Small minimum distance tends to result in poor decoding performance at the error-floor region. 2) The row weights of parity-check matrices should not be large: The sum-product decoding performance at the water-fall region is degraded as the row weight increases. Recently, Kudekar et al. showed spatially-coupled…
In this work we probe the impact of channel estimation on the performance of quantum LDPC codes. Our channel estimation is based on an optimal estimate of the relevant decoherence parameter via its quantum Fisher information. Using state-of-the art quantum LDPC codes designed for the quantum depolarization channel, and utilizing various quantum probes with different entanglement properties, we show how the performance of such codes can deteriorate by an order of magnitude when optimal channel identification is fed into a belief propagation decoding algorithm. Our work highlights the importance…
In this paper, a construction of a pair of "regular" quasi-cyclic LDPC codes as ingredient codes for a quantum error-correcting code is proposed. That is, we find quantum regular LDPC codes with various weight distributions. Furthermore our proposed codes have lots of variations for length, code rate. These codes are obtained by a descrete mathematical characterization for model matrices of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes. Our proposed codes achieve a bounded distance decoding (BDD) bound, or known as VG bound, and achieve a lower bound of the code length.
The problem of finding code distance has been long studied for the generic ensembles of linear codes and led to several algorithms that substantially reduce exponential complexity of this task. However, no asymptotic complexity bounds are known for distance verification in other ensembles of linear codes. Our goal is to re-design the existing generic algorithms of distance verification and derive their complexity for LDPC codes. We obtain new complexity bounds with provable performance expressed in terms of the erasure-correcting thresholds of long LDPC codes. These bounds exponentially reduce…
We give a construction of quantum LDPC codes of dimension $Θ(\log N)$ and distance $Θ(N/\log N)$ as the code length $N\to\infty$. Using a product of chain complexes this construction also provides a family of quantum LDPC codes of distance $Ω(N^{1-α/2}/\log N)$ and dimension $Ω(N^α\log N)$, where $0 \le α< 1$. We also introduce and study a new operation called lifted product, which naturally generalizes the product operations for quantum codes and chain complexes. Moreover, as a simple byproduct of our results on quantum codes, we obtain a new result on classical codes. We show that for any fi…
Constructing quantum LDPC codes with a minimum distance that grows faster than a square root of the length has been a major challenge of the field. With this challenge in mind, we investigate constructions that come from high-dimensional expanders, in particular Ramanujan complexes. These naturally give rise to very unbalanced quantum error correcting codes that have a large $X$-distance but a much smaller $Z$-distance. However, together with a classical expander LDPC code and a tensoring method that generalises a construction of Hastings and also the Tillich-Zemor construction of quantum code…
The information reconciliation in a quantum key distribution protocol can be studied separately from other steps in the protocol. The problem of information reconciliation can be reduced to that of distributed source coding. Its solution by LDPC codes is reviewed. We list some obstacles preventing the LDPC-based distributed source coding from becoming a more favorable alternative to the Cascade protocol for information reconciliation in quantum key distribution protocols. This exposition does not require knowledge of the quantum theory.
We provide a new lower bound on the minimum distance of a family of quantum LDPC codes based on Cayley graphs proposed by MacKay, Mitchison and Shokrollahi. Our bound is exponential, improving on the quadratic bound of Couvreur, Delfosse and Zémor. This result is obtained by examining a family of subsets of the hypercube which locally satisfy some parity conditions.
