The ability to measure and reduce systematic errors in single-qubit logic gates is crucial when evaluating quantum computing implementations. We describe pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) sequences that can be used to measure precisely even small systematic errors in rotations of electron-spin-based qubits. Using these sequences we obtain values for errors in rotation angle and axis for single-qubit rotations using a commercial EPR spectrometer. We conclude that errors in qubit operations by pulsed EPR are not limiting factors in the implementation of electron-spin based quantum computers.
We implement a direct detection scheme based on hybrid photodetectors to experimentally investigate high-order correlations for detected photons by means of quantities that can be experimentally accessed. We show their usefulness in fully characterizing a multimode twin-beam state in comparison with classical states and, in particular, we introduce a nonclassicality criterion based on a simple linear combination of high-order correlation functions. Our scheme is self-consistent, allowing the estimation of all the involved parameters (quantum efficiency, number of modes and average energy) dire…
A short review of the pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance (pEDMR) experiment is presented. PEDMR allows the highly sensitive observation of coherent electron spin motion of charge carriers and defects in semiconductors by means of transient current measurements. The theoretical foundations, the experimental implementation, its sensitivity and its potential with regard to the investigation of electronic transitions in semiconductors are discussed. For the example of the P_b center at the crystalline silicon (111) to silicon dioxide interface it is shown experimentally how one can de…
We describe a pulsed multi-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer operating at several frequencies in the range of 110-336 GHz. The microwave source at all frequencies consists of a multiplier chain starting from a solid state synthesizer in the 12-15 GHz range. A fast PIN-switch at the base frequency creates the pulses. At all frequencies a Fabry-Perot resonator is employed and the pi/2 pulse length ranges from ~100 ns at 110 GHz to ~600 ns at 334 GHz. Measurements of a single crystal containing dilute Mn2+ impurities at 12 T illustrate the effects of large electron spin polar…
A pulsed source of entangled photons is desirable for some applications. Yet, such a source has intrinsic problems arising from the simultaneous arrival of the signal and noise photons to the detectors. These problems are analyzed and practical methods to calculate the number of accidental (or spurious) coincidences are described in detail, and experimentally checked, for the different regimes of interest. The results are useful not only to measure entanglement, but to all the situations where extracting the number of valid coincidences from noisy data is required. As an example of the use of …
Here I present the theory of a new hybrid paramagnetic-ferrimagnetic SiC-YiG quantum sensor. It is designed to allow sub-nanoscale single external spin sensitivity optically detected pulsed electron electron double resonance spectroscopy, using an X band pulsed EPR spectrometer and an optical fiber. The sensor contains one single V2 negatively charged silicon vacancy color center in 4H-SiC, whose photoluminescence is waveguided by a 4H-SiC nanophotonic structure towards an optical fiber. This V2 spin probe is created by ion implantation at a depth of few nanometers below the surface, determine…
We report on a novel dynamical phenomenon in electron spin resonance experiments of phosphorus donors. When strongly coupling the paramagnetic ensemble to a superconducting lumped element resonator, the coherent exchange between these two subsystems leads to a train of periodic, self-stimulated echos after a conventional Hahn echo pulse sequence. The presence of these multi-echo signatures is explained using a simple model based on spins rotating on the Bloch sphere, backed up by numerical calculations using the inhomogeneous Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian.
We report the realization of a bright ultrafast two-mode squeezer based on type II parametric downconversion (PDC) in periodically poled $\mathrm{KTiOPO_4}$ (PP-KTP) waveguides. It produces a pulsed two-mode squeezed vacuum state: a photon-number entangled pair of truly single-mode pulses or, in terms of continuous variables quantum optics, a pulsed, single mode Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state in the telecom regime. We prove the single mode character of our source by measuring its $g^{(2)}$ correlation function and demonstrate a mean photon number of up to 2.5 per pulse, equivalent to 11dB…
We present pulsed electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) experiments which enable us to characterize the coupling between bismuth donor spin qubits in Si and the surrounding spin bath of 29Si impurities which provides the dominant decoherence mechanism (nuclear spin diffusion) at low temperatures (< 16 K). Decoupling from the spin bath is predicted and cluster correlation expansion simulations show near-complete suppression of spin diffusion, at optimal working points. The suppression takes the form of sharply peaked divergences of the spin diffusion coherence time, in contrast with previou…
Several microscopic pathways have been proposed to explain the large magnetic effects observed in organic semiconductors, but identifying and characterising which microscopic process actually influences the overall magnetic field response is challenging. Pulsed electrically-detected magnetic resonance provides an ideal platform for this task as it intrinsically monitors the charge carriers of interest and provides dynamical information which is inaccessible through conventional magnetoconductance measurements. Here we develop a general time domain theory to describe the spin-dependent reaction…
We establish a testbed system for the development of high-sensitivity Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) techniques for small samples at cryogenic temperatures. Our system consists of a Niobium Nitride thin-film planar superconducting microresonator designed to have a concentrated mode volume to couple to a small amount of paramagnetic material, and to be resilient to magnetic fields of up to 400 mT. At 65 mK we measure high-cooperativity coupling ($C \approx 19$) to an organic radical microcrystal containing $10^{12}$ spins in a pico-litre volume. We detect the spin-lattice decoherence rate via th…
The polarization analysis of quantized probe light transmitted through an atomic ensemble has been used to prepare entangled collective atomic states. In a "balanced" detection configuration, where the difference signal from two detection ports is analyzed, the continuous monitoring of a component of the Stokes field vector provides a means for conditional projective measurements on the atomic system. Here, we make use of classical driving fields, in the pulsed regime, and of an "unbalanced" detection setup (single detector) where the effective photon number of scattered photons is the detecte…
Temporal-spectral modes of light provide a fundamental window into the nature of atomic and molecular systems and offer robust means for information encoding. Methods to precisely characterize the temporal-spectral state of light at the single-photon level thus play a central role in understanding quantum emitters and are a key requirement for quantum technologies that harness single-photon states. Here we demonstrate an optical reference-free method, which melds techniques from ultrafast metrology and single-photon spectral detection, to characterize the temporal-spectral state of single phot…
In this work, we demonstrate the use of frequency-tunable superconducting NbTiN coplanar waveguide microresonators for multi-frequency pulsed electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. By applying a bias current to the center pin, the resonance frequency ($\sim$7.6 GHz) can be continuously tuned by as much as 95 MHz in 270 ns without a change in the quality factor of 3000 at 2K. We demonstrate the ESR performance of our resonators by measuring donor spin ensembles in silicon and show that adiabatic pulses can be used to overcome magnetic field inhomogeneities and microwave power limitations du…
An experimental platform of ultralow-temperature pulsed ENDOR (electron-nuclear double resonance) spectroscopy is constructed for the bulk materials. Coherent property of the coupled electron and nuclear spins of the rare-earth (RE) dopants in a crystal (143Nd3+:Y2SiO5) is investigated from 100 mK to 6 K. At the lowest working temperatures, two-pulse-echo coherence time exceeding 2 ms and 40 ms are achieved for the electron and nuclear spins, while the electronic Zeeman and hyperfine population lifetimes are more than 15 s and 10 min. With the aid of the near-unity electron spin polarization a…

A simple and convenient design enables real-time three-dimensional position tracking of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The system consists entirely of commercially available components (a single photon counter, a high-speed digital-to-analog converter, a phase-sensitive detector-based feedback device, and a piezo stage), eliminating the need for custom programming or rigorous optimization processes. With a large input range of counters and trackers combined with the high sensitivity of single-photon counting, high-speed position tracking (upper bound recovery time of 0.9 s upon 250 …
The paper presents the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance study of defects in the spin chain o- (DMTTF)2X family using continuous wave and pulsed techniques. The defects in spin chains are strongly correlated and present similar microscopic structure as a molecular magnet. By means of 2D-HYSCORE and DFT calculations we show a strong reduction of hyperfine coupling between the defects and the nuclear spin bath. We assume that the reduction is due to the Heisenberg exchange interaction which screens the effect of the nuclei.

There is growing interest in bismuth-doped silicon (Si:Bi) as an alternative to the well-studied proposals for silicon based quantum information processing (QIP) using phosphorus-doped silicon (Si:P). We focus here on the implications of its anomalously strong hyperfine coupling. In particular, we analyse in detail the regime where recent pulsed magnetic resonance experiments have demonstrated the potential for orders of magnitude speedup in quantum gates by exploiting transitions that are electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) forbidden at high fields. We also present calculations using a phen…
