We propose an efficient procedure for numerically evolving the Delta Kicked Harmonic Oscillator. The method allows for longer and more accurate simulations of the system as well as a simple procedure for calculating the systems Floquet eigenstates and quasi-energies. The method is used to examine the dynamical behaviour of the system in cases where the ratio of the kicking frequency to the systems natural frequency is both rational and irrational.
We propose an experimental configuration, within an ion trap, by which a quantum mechanical delta-kicked harmonic oscillator could be realized, and investigated. We show how to directly measure the sensitivity of the ion motion to small variations in the external parameters.
The influence of an initial momentum on the appearance of "quantum resonances" in the delta-kicked rotor system is explored experimentally. We show that for certain initial momenta, a resonance can be negated entirely, whereas at others a resonance can be made to appear. At a larger number of kicks, all resonances are shown to narrow. We show that as a consequence, the individual "diffraction peaks" may split. We compare our results to numerical simulations as well as analytical theory.
We report an experimental investigation of momentum diffusion in the delta-function kicked rotor where time symmetry is broken by a two-period kicking cycle and spatial symmetry by an alternating linear potential. We exploit this, and a technique involving a moving optical potential, to create an asymmetry in the momentum diffusion that is due to the classical chaotic diffusion. This represents a realization of a type of Hamiltonian quantum ratchet.
The sensitivity of the fidelity in the kicked rotor to an acceleration is experimentally and theoretically investigated. We used a Bose-Einstein condensate exposed to a sequence of pulses from a standing light wave followed by a single reversal pulse in which the standing wave was shifted by half a wavelength. The features of the fidelity "spectrum" as a function of acceleration are presented. This work may find application in the measurement of temperature of an atomic sample.
We obtain the tomogram of squeezed correlated states of a quantum parametric damped oscillator in an explicit form. We study the damping within the framework of the Caldirola--Kanai model and chose the parametric excitation in the form of a very short pulse simulated by a delta-kick of frequency; the squeezing phenomenon is reviewed. The cases of strong and weak damping are investigated.
Under certain conditions, the quantum delta-kicked harmonic oscillator displays quantum resonances. We consider an atom-optical realization of the delta-kicked harmonic oscillator, and present a theoretical discussion of the quantum resonances that could be observed in such a system. Having outlined our model of the physical system we derive the values at which quantum resonances occur and relate these to potential experimental parameters. We discuss the observable effects of the quantum resonances, using the results of numerical simulations. We develop a physical explanation for the quantum r…
The quantum dynamics of a periodically driven system, the delta-kicked accelerator, is investigated in the semiclassical and pseudo-classical regimes, where quantum accelerator modes are observed. We construct the evolution operator of this classically chaotic system explicitly. If certain quantum resonance conditions are fullfilled, we show one can reduce the evolution operator to a finite matrix, whose eigenvectors are the quasi-eigenstates. These are represented by their Husimi functions. In so doing, we are able to directly compare the pure quantum states with the classical states. In the …
We investigate the quantum-classical transition in the delta-kicked rotor and the attainment of the classical limit in terms of measurement-induced state-localization. It is possible to study the transition by fixing the environmentally induced disturbance at a sufficiently small value, and examining the dynamics as the system is made more macroscopic. When the system action is relatively small, the dynamics is quantum mechanical and when the system action is sufficiently large there is a transition to classical behavior. The dynamics of the rotor in the region of transition, characterized by …
We show that classical-quantum correspondence of center of mass motion in two coupled delta-kicked rotors can be obtained from intrinsic decoherence of the system itself which occurs due to the entanglement of the center of mass motion to the internal degree of freedom without coupling to external environment.
We show how to prepare and directly measure the squeezed states of nanomechanical oscillators. An intense pulse interacts with a dielectric mirror in a cavity. The quadratic coupling between the optical pulse and the oscillator results in the reduction of a quadrature variance of the massive oscillator. Differently from others, the proposed scheme here requires neither any post-action on the optical field nor a preparation of a nonclassical optical field. Depending on the initial temperature of the system, the squeezing of the variance under the vacuum limit can be achieved only by a few repet…
Large transporting regular islands are found in the classical phase space of a modified kicked rotor system in which the kicking potential is reversed after every two kicks. The corresponding quantum system, for a variety of system parameters and over long time scales, is shown to display energy absorption that is significantly faster than that associated with the underlying classical anomalous diffusion. The results are of interest to both areas of quantum chaos and quantum control.
We consider the quantum harmonic oscillator in contact with a finite temperature bath, modelled by the Caldeira-Leggett master equation. Applying periodic kicks to the oscillator, we study the system in different dynamical regimes between classical integrability and chaos on the one hand, and ballistic or diffusive energy absorption on the other. We then investigate the influence of the heat bath on the oscillator in each case. Phase space techniques allow us to simulate the evolution of the system efficiently. In this way, we calculate high resolution Wigner functions at long times, where the…
We show that heating of harmonically trapped ions by periodic delta kicks is dramatically enhanced at isolated values of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. At these values, quasienergy eigenstates localized on island structures undergo avoided crossings with extended web-states.
We experimentally investigate the effects of phase noise on the resonant and non-resonant dynamics of the atom-optics kicked rotor. Employing sinusoidal phase modulation at various frequencies, resonances are found corresponding to periodic phase shifts, resulting in the effective transformation of quantum anti-resonances into resonances and vice-versa. The stability of the resonance is analysed, with the aid of experiments, epsilon-classical theory and numerical simulations, and is found to be surprisingly robust against phase noise. Finally we look into the effects of phase noise on dynamica…
We present a kicked harmonic oscillator where the impulsive driving is provided by stroboscopic measurements on an ancillary degree of freedom and not by the canonical quantization of a time-dependent Hamiltonian. The ancila is dynamically entangled with the oscillator position, while the background Hamiltonian remains static. The dynamics of this system is determined in closed analytical form, allowing for the evaluation of a properly defined Loschmidt echo, ensemble averages, and phase-space portraits. As in the case of standard Floquet systems we observe regimes with crystalline and quasicr…
We discuss the roles of the macroscopic limit and of different system-environment interactions in the quantum-classical transition for a chaotic system. We consider the kicked harmonic oscillator subject to reservoirs that correspond in the classical case to purely dissipative or purely diffusive behavior, in a situation that can be implemented in ion trap experiments. In the dissipative case, we derive an expression for the time at which quantum and classical predictions become different (breaking time) and show that a complete quantum-classical correspondence is not possible in the chaotic r…
We numerically study the quantum dynamics of a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric kicked harmonic oscillator. We observe that directed current of momentum and ballistic diffusion of energy coexist under the non-resonant conditions, whereas both the momentum and energy oscillate as damped cosine functions with identical frequencies under the resonant conditions. The research shows that the directed current of momentum and ballistic diffusion of energy arise from nearest-neighbor hopping between momentum eigenstates with the non-Hermitian driving, while the damped oscillations of momentum and energy origi…
Discrete time (coined) quantum walks are produced by the repeated application of a constant unitary transformation to a quantum system. By recasting these walks into the setting of periodic perturbations to an otherwise freely evolving system we introduce the concept of a stroboscopic quantum walk. Through numerical simulation, we establish the link between families of stroboscopic walks and quantum resonances. These are observed in the nonlinear systems of quantum chaos theory such as the delta-kicked rotator or the delta-kicked accelerator.
We deal with a system comprising a nonlinear (Kerr-like) oscillator excited by a series of ultra-short external pulses. We introduce the fidelity-based entropic parameter that can be used as an indicator of quantum chaos. Moreover, we propose to use the fidelity-like parameter comprising the information about the mean number of photons in the system. We shall concentrate on the long-time behaviour of the parameters discussed, showing that for deep chaos cases the quantum fidelities behave chaotically in the classical sense despite their strictly quantum character.
We consider the quantum counterpart of the kicked harmonic oscillator showing that it undergoes the effect of delocalization in momentum when the classical diffusional threshold is obeyed. For this case the ratio between the oscillator frequency and the frequency of the kick is a rational number, strictly in analogy with the classical case that does not obey the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theorem as the unperturbed motion is degenerate. A tight-binding formulation is derived showing that there is not delocalization in momentum for irrational ratio of the above frequencies. In this way, it is stra…
We review the theoretical model and experimental realization of the atom optics $δ-$kicked rotor (AOKR), a paradigm of classical and quantum chaos. We have performed a number of experiments with an all-optical Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a periodic standing wave potential in an AOKR system. We discuss results of the investigation of the phenomena of quantum resonances in the AOKR. An interesting feature of the momentum distribution of the atoms obtained as a result of short pulses of light, is the variance of the momentum distribution or the kinetic energy $<p^{2}>/2m$ in units of the re…
The one-dimensional time-independent Green's function $G_0$ of a quantum simple harmonic oscillator system ($V_0(x)=m ω^2 x^2/2$) can be obtained by solving the equation directly. It has a compact expression, which gives correct eigenvalues and eigenfunctions easily. The Green's function $G$ with an additional delta-function potential can be obtained readily. The same technics of solving the Green's function $G_0$ can be used to solve the eigenvalue problem of the simple harmonic oscillator with an generic delta-function potential at an arbitrary site, i.e. $V_1(x)\propto δ(x-a)$. The Wronskia…
The problem of the harmonic oscillator with a centrally located delta function potential can be exactly solved in one dimension where the eigenfunctions are expressed as superpositions of the Hermite polynomials or as confluent hypergeometric functions in general. The eigenfunctions obtained exactly are difficult to visualise and hence to gain more insight, one can attempt using model wave functions which are explicitly and simply expressed. Here we apply the variational method to verify how close one can approach the exact ground state eigenvalues using such trial wave functions. We obtain th…
The time evolution of thermal states of a mirror released from a tight harmonic trap is studied. After the release no dissipation is assumed to be present and the mirror is, after a time delay, kicked into a momentum superposition state. The thermal character of the initial state washes out the telltale interference patterns of the superposition but no loss of coherence is found. This investigation resolves a controversy about decoherence--without--dissipation and shows that entrained measurements can be surprisingly insensitive to temperature effects.
We investigate the onset of chaos in a periodically kicked Dicke model (KDM), using the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) as a diagnostic tool, in both the oscillator and the spin subspaces. In the large spin limit, the classical Hamiltonian map is constructed, which allows us to investigate the corresponding phase space dynamics and to compute the Lyapunov exponent. We show that the growth rate of the OTOC for the canonically conjugate coordinates of the oscillator is able to capture the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic regime. The onset of chaos is further investigated using the saturation…
We determine the generating function of the harmonic oscillator by a new method. Using this generating function we derive the eigenfunctions of the moment p. We find that the normalization of these eigenfunctions is a real and not complex number with phase factor chosen equal one (standard books of quantum mechanics). We prove that the integral of the delta function is equal to one and we derive the oscillator propagator.
We derive the energy levels associated with the even-parity wave functions of the harmonic oscillator with an additional delta-function potential at the origin. Our results bring to the attention of students a non-trivial and analytical example of a modification of the usual harmonic oscillator potential, with emphasis on the modification of the boundary conditions at the origin. This problem calls the attention of the students to an inaccurate statement in quantum mechanics textbooks often found in the context of solution of the harmonic oscillator problem.
Theoretical analysis of a suspended nanomechanical membrane subject to an optical driving field in an optomechanical cavity is presented, which is confirmed through numerical simulations. In the presence of an optical field between its mirrors, the high-finesse optomechanical resonator acts as an oscillator driven by a radiation pressure force. The periodic nature of the radiation pressure force makes the nano-mechanical membrane in the optomechanical system as a kicked harmonic oscillator. Mathematically the physical system displays a stochastic web map that helps to understand several proper…
We illustrate a reverse Von Neumann measurement scheme in which a geometric phase induced on a quantum harmonic oscillator is measured using a microscopic qubit as a probe. We show how such a phase, generated by a cyclic evolution in the phase space of the harmonic oscillator, can be kicked back on the qubit, which plays the role of a quantum interferometer. We also extend our study to finite-temperature dissipative Markovian dynamics and discuss potential implementations in micro and nano-mechanical devices coupled to an effective two-level system.
The purposes of this work are (1) to show that the appropriate generalizations of the oscillator algebra permit the construction of a wide set of nonlinear coherent states in unified form; and (2) to clarify the likely contradiction between the nonclassical properties of such nonlinear coherent states and the possibility of finding a classical analog for them since they are P-represented by a delta function. In (1) we prove that a class of nonlinear coherent states can be constructed to satisfy a closure relation that is expressed uniquely in terms of the Meijer G-function. This property autom…
Using a semiclassical ansatz we analytically predict for the fidelity of delta-kicked rotors the occurrence of revivals and the disappearance of intermediate revival peaks arising from the breaking of a symmetry in the initial conditions. A numerical verification of the predicted effects is given and experimental ramifications are discussed.
We consider the problem of designing a variety of "system guided" basis sets for quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators. Using ideas based on supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we design canonical transformations of the usual position and momentum to generate generalized "Cartesian-like positions, W and momenta, p_W" with unit Poisson brackets. These are quantized following Dirac, leading to an infinite family of potential "operator observables". The fundamental issue is that all but one of the operators are not Hermitian (formally self-adjoint) in the original position representation. We sh…
The Harmonic Oscillator Potential Perturbed by a Combination of Linear and Non-linear Dirac Delta Interactions with Application to Bose-Einstein Condensation
In this work, we study the fluctuation relation and the second law of thermodynamics within a quantum linear oscillator externally driven over the period of time t = tau. To go beyond the standard approach (the two-point projective measurement one) to this subject and also render it discussed in both quantum and classical domains on the single footing, we recast this standard approach in terms of the Wigner function and its propagator in the phase space (x,p). With the help of the canonical transformation from (x,p) to the angle-action coordinates (ϕ,I), we can then derive a measurement-free (…
Casimir friction is analyzed for a pair of dielectric particles in relative motion. We first adopt a microscopic model for harmonically oscillating particles at finite temperature T moving non-relativistically with constant velocity. We use a statistical-mechanical description where time-dependent correlations are involved. This description is physical and direct, and, in spite of its simplicity, is able to elucidate the essentials of the problem. This treatment elaborates upon, and extends, an earlier theory of ours back in 1992. The energy change Delta E turns out to be finite in general, co…
A model consisting of a Harmonic Oscillator well and a linear potential, coupled by Dirac delta function, is solved. We find the exact analytical expressions for Green's function for this problem. This Green's functions are used to calculate the Raman excitation profile and electronic absorption spectrum.
This work sets the exact equations for the quasiclassical response function and susceptibility of a Brownian particle immersed in a bath of quantum harmonic oscillators driving by nonlinear harmonic potentials. A delta force perturbation gives rise to a response whose susceptibility is the combination of a linear term, own of the harmonic oscillator, plus a nonlinear one involving an integral \textcolor{black}{equation. It is provided a recursion method to find its solutions based on functional equations in the Banach space.} The ODE for the response function is a highly nonlinear damped non-a…
The Dirac delta function and the Feynman propagator of the harmonic oscillator are found by a simple calculation using Fock Bargmann space and the generating function of the harmonic oscillator. With help of the Schwinger generating function of Wigner's D-matrix elements we derive the generating function of spherical harmonics, the quadratic transformations and the generating functions of: the characters of SU (2), Legendre and Gegenbauer polynomials. We also deduce the van der Wearden invariant of 3-j symbols of SU (2). Using the Fock Bargmann space and its complex conjugate we find the integ…
We determine the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator where the coordinates and momenta are assumed to obey the modified commutation relations [x_i,p_j]=i hbar[(1+ beta p^2) delta_{ij} + beta' p_i p_j]. These commutation relations are motivated by the fact they lead to the minimal length uncertainty relations which appear in perturbative string theory. Our solutions illustrate how certain features of string theory may manifest themselves in simple quantum mechanical systems through the modification of the canonical commutation relations. We discuss whether such effe…

We study the quantum behaviour of a particle moving in a one-dimensional double well potential. This double well is obtained by gluing together, at the origin, two shifted harmonic oscillator potentials. The Schrödinger equation is exactly solvable. The requirement that discontinuities, in the wavefunction and its first derivative, are absent at the origin, leads to the quantisation of the energy eigenvalues. We also show that oscillations in time take place between two nearby single harmonic oscillator ground states. Finally, the double well potential is augmented by a Dirac delta-function po…
We consider the linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap with $\cal {PT}$-symmetric double-delta function loss and gain terms. We verify that the conditions for the applicability of a recent proposition by Mityagin and Siegl on singular perturbations of harmonic oscillator type self-adjoint operators are fulfilled. In both the linear and nonlinear case we calculate numerically the shifts of the unperturbed levels with quantum numbers $n$ of up to 89 in dependence on the strength of the non-Hermiticity and compare with rigorous estimates derive…
A system of a particle and a harmonic oscillator, which have pure point spectrum if uncoupled, is known to acquire absolutely continuous spectrum when the particle and the oscillator are coupled by a sufficiently strong point interaction. Here the simple dynamical mechanism underlying this phenomenon is exposed. The energy of the oscillator is proven to exponentially diverge in time, while the spatial probability distribution of the particle collapses into a delta function in the interaction point. On account of this result, a generalized model with many oscillators which interact with the par…
