In this work, we study the fluctuation relation and the second law of thermodynamics within a quantum linear oscillator externally driven over the period of time t = tau. To go beyond the standard approach (the two-point projective measurement one) to this subject and also render it discussed in both quantum and classical domains on the single footing, we recast this standard approach in terms of the Wigner function and its propagator in the phase space (x,p). With the help of the canonical transformation from (x,p) to the angle-action coordinates (ϕ,I), we can then derive a measurement-free (classical-like) form of the Crooks fluctuation relation in the Wigner representation. This enables us to introduce the work W_{I_0,I_{tau}} associated with a single run from (I_0) to (I_{tau}) over the period tau, which is a quantum generalization of the thermodynamic work with its roots in the classical thermodynamics. This quantum work differs from the energy difference e_{I_0,I_{tau}} = e(I_{tau}) - e(I_0) unless beta, hbar --> 0. Consequently, we will obtain the quantum second-law inequality Delta F_{beta} \leq <W>_{P} \leq <e>_{P} = Delta U, where P, Delta F_{beta}, and <W>_P denote the work (quasi)-probability distribution, the free energy difference, and the average work distinguished from the internal energy difference Delta U, respectively, while <W>_P --> Delta U in the limit of beta, hbar --> 0 only. Therefore, we can also introduce the quantum heat Q_q = Delta U - W even for a thermally isolated system, resulting from the quantum fluctuation therein. This is a more fine-grained result than <W>_P = Delta U obtained from the standard approach. Owing to the measurement-free nature of the thermodynamic work W_{I_0,I_{tau}}, our result can also apply to the (non-thermal) initial states rho_0 = (1-gamma) rho_{beta} + gamma sigma with sigma \ne rho_{beta}.
We consider a time-dependent quantum linear oscillator coupled to a bath at an arbitrary strength. We then introduce a generalized Jarzynski equality (GJE) which includes the terms reflecting the system-bath coupling. This enables us to study systematically the coupling effect on the linear oscillator in a non-equilibrium process. This is also associated with the second law of thermodynamics beyond the weak-coupling limit. We next take into consideration the GJE in the classical limit. By this generalization we show that the Jarzynski equality in its original form can be associated with the se…
As known all physical properties of solids are described well by the system of quantum linear harmonic oscillators. It is shown in the present paper that the system consisting of classical linear harmonic oscillators having temperature dependent masses or (and) frequencies has the same partition function as the system consisting of quantum linear harmonic oscillators having temperature independent masses and frequencies while the means of the square displacements of the positions of the oscillators from their mean positions for the system consisting of classical linear harmonic oscillators hav…
A free particle coupled to a heat bath can exhibit a number of thermodynamic anomalies like a negative specific heat or reentrant classicality. These low-temperature phenomena are expected to be modified at very low temperatures where finite-size effects associated with the discreteness of the energy spectrum become relevant. In this paper, we explore in which form the thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle appear for a damped harmonic oscillator. Since the discreteness of the oscillator's energy spectrum is fully accounted for, the results are valid for arbitrary temperatures. As…
I formulate a quantum stochastic thermodynamics for the quantum trajectories of a continuously-monitored forced harmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal reservoir. Consistent trajectory-dependent definitions are introduced for work, heat, and entropy, through engineering the thermal reservoir from a sequence of two-level systems. Within this formalism the connection between irreversibility and entropy production is analyzed and confirmed by proving a detailed fluctuation theorem for quantum trajectories. Finally, possible experimental verifications are discussed.
We initially prepare a quantum linear oscillator weakly coupled to a bath in equilibrium at an arbitrary temperature. We disturb this system by varying a Hamiltonian parameter of the coupled oscillator, namely, either its spring constant or mass according to an arbitrary but pre-determined protocol in order to perform external work on it. We then derive a closed expression for the reduced density operator of the coupled oscillator along this non-equilibrium process as well as the exact expression pertaining to the corresponding quasi-static process. This immediately allows us to analytically d…
We undertake a thorough analysis of the thermodynamics of the trajectories followed by a quantum harmonic oscillator coupled to $N$ dissipative baths by using a new approach to large-deviation theory inspired by phase-space quantum optics. As an illustrative example, we study the archetypal case of a harmonic oscillator coupled to two thermal baths, allowing for a comparison with the analogous classical result. In the low-temperature limit, we find a significant quantum suppression in the rate of work exchanged between the system and each bath. We further show how the presented method is capab…
In this investigation, the displacement operator is revisited. We established a connection between the Hermitian version of this operator with the well-known Weyl ordering. Besides, we characterized the quantum properties of a simple displaced harmonic oscillator, as well as of a displaced anisotropic two-dimensional non-Hermitian harmonic oscillator. By constructing the partition functions for both harmonic oscillators, we were able to derive several thermodynamic quantities from their energy spectra. The features of these quantities were depicted and analyzed in details.
Some quantal systems require only a small part of the full quantum theory for their analysis in classical terms. In such understanding we review some recent literature on semiclassical treatments. An analysis of it allows one to see that some important quantum features of the harmonic oscillator can indeed be already encountered at the classical or semiclassical statistical levels.
We investigate a total thermodynamic entropy production rate of an isolated quantum system. In particular, we consider a quantum model of coupled harmonic oscillators in a star configuration, where a central harmonic oscillator (system) is coupled to a finite number of surrounding harmonic oscillators (bath). In this model, when the initial state of the total system is given by the tensor product of the Gibbs states of the system and the bath, every harmonic oscillator is always in a Gibbs state with a time-dependent temperature. This enables us to define time-dependent thermodynamic entropy f…
Small systems (of interest in the areas of nanophysics, quantum information, etc.) are particularly vulnerable to environmental effects. Thus, we determine various thermodynamic functions for an oscillator in an arbitrary heat bath at arbitrary temperatures. Explicit results are presented for the most commonly discussed heat bath models: Ohmic, single relaxation time and blackbody radiation.
In this work, we expose the role of environment, confinement and external magnetic field ($B$) in determining the low temperature thermodynamic behaviour in the context of cyclotron motion of a charged oscillator with anomalous dissipative coupling involving the momentum instead of the much studied coordinate coupling. Explicit expressions for different quantum thermodynamic functions (QTF) are obtained at low temperatures for different quantum heat bath characterized by spectral density function, $μ(ω)$. The power law fall of different QTF are in conformity with third law of thermodynamics. B…
We determine the quasistationary distribution of Floquet-state occupation probabilities for a parametrically driven harmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal bath. Since the system exhibits detailed balance, and the canonical representatives of its quasienergies are equidistant, these probabilities are given by a geometrical Boltzmann distribution, but its quasitemperature differs from the actual temperature of the bath, being affected by the functional form of the latter's spectral density. We provide two examples of quasithermal engineering, i.e., of deliberate manipulation of the quasistatio…
In 1893, Wien applied the first two laws of thermodynamics to blackbody radiation and derived his displacement theorem. Believing that the information from thermodynamics had been exhausted, Planck turned to statistical ideas in 1900 in order to provide a physical understanding for his experimental--data-based interpolation giving the Planck spectrum without zero-point radiation. Here we point out that the third law of thermodynamics (which was developed in the early years of the 20th century) introduces additional thermodynamic information regarding thermal radiation. The Planck spectrum for …
A remarkable thermodynamic fermion-boson symmetry is found for the canonical ensemble of ideal quantum gases in harmonic oscillator potentials of odd dimensions. The bosonic partition function is related to the fermionic one extended to negative temperatures, and vice versa.
We apply the stochastic thermodynamics formalism to describe the dynamics of systems of complex Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations. We provide in particular a simple and general recipe to calculate thermodynamical currents, dissipated and propagating heat for networks of nonlinear oscillators. By using the Hodge decomposition of thermodynamical forces and fluxes, we derive a formula for entropy production that generalises the notion of non-potential forces and makes trans- parent the breaking of detailed balance and of time reversal symmetry for states arbitrarily far from equilibrium. Our f…
The aim of this tutorial is to analyze the equilibrium properties of some simple but widely used quantum systems. The canonical ensemble is used to evaluate the required properties here.
The quantum oscillator in the thermostat is considered as the model of an open quantum system. Our analysis will be heavily founded on the use of the Schroedinger generalized uncertainties relations (SUR). Our first aim is to demonstrate that for the quantum oscillator the state of thermal equilibrium belongs to the correlated coherent states (CCS), which imply the saturation of SUR at any temperature. The obtained results open the perspective for the search of some statistical theory, which unifies the elements of quantum mechanics and GDT; this in turn will give the foundation for the modifi…
The thermodynamic uncertainty relation sets the minimal bound of the cost-precision trade-off relation for dissipative processes. Examining the dynamics of an internally coupled system that is driven by a constant thermodynamic force, we however find that the trade-off relation of a sub-system is not constrained by the minimal bound of conventional uncertainty relation. We made our point explicit by using an exactly solvable model of interacting oscillators. As the number (N) of interacting oscillators increases, the uncertainty bound of individual oscillators is reduced to 2k_B T/N upon full …
The ongoing discussion whether thermodynamic properties can be extracted from a (possibly approximate) quantum mechanical time evolution using time averages is fed with an instructive example. It is shown for the harmonic oscillator how the Hilbert space or an appropriately defined phase space must be populated in terms of coherent states in order to obtain the quantum result respectively the classical one.
A unified description of i) classical phase transitions and their remnants in finite systems and ii) quantum phase transitions is presented. The ensuing discussion relies on the interplay between, on the one hand, the thermodynamic concepts of temperature and specific heat and on the other, the quantal ones of coupling strengths in the Hamiltonian. Our considerations are illustrated in an exactly solvable model of Plastino and Moszkowski [Il Nuovo Cimento {\bf 47}, 470 (1978)].
A model of coupled molecular oscillators is proposed to study nonequilibrium thermodynamics of synchronization. We find that synchronization of nonequilibrium oscillators costs energy even when the oscillator-oscillator coupling is conservative. By solving the steady state of the many-body system analytically, we show that the system goes through a nonequilibrium phase transition driven by energy dissipation, and the critical energy dissipation depends on both the frequency and strength of the exchange reactions. Moreover, our study reveals the optimal design for achieving maximum synchronizat…
The Landauer principle states that at least $k_B T \ln 2$ of energy is required to erase a 1-bit memory, with $k_B T$ the thermal energy of the system. We study the effects of inertia on this bound using as one-bit memory an underdamped micro-mechanical oscillator confined in a double-well potential created by a feedback loop. The potential barrier is precisely tunable in the few $k_B T$ range. We measure, within the stochastic thermodynamic framework, the work and the heat of the erasure protocol. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that, in this underdamped system, the Landauer b…
We consider the global thermal state of classical and quantum harmonic oscillators that interact with a reservoir. Ohmic damping of the oscillator can be exactly treated with a 1D scalar field reservoir, whereas general non-Ohmic damping is conveniently treated with a continuum reservoir of harmonic oscillators. Using the diagonalized Hamiltonian of the total system, we calculate a number of thermodynamic quantities for the damped oscillator: the mean force internal energy, mean force free energy, and another internal energy based on the free-oscillator Hamiltonian. The classical mean force en…
The Dirac oscillator in a homogenous magnetic field exhibits a chirality phase transition at a particular (critical) value of the magnetic field. Recently, this system has also been shown to be exactly solvable in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics featuring the interesting phenomenon of re-entrant phase transitions. In this work we provide a detailed study of the thermodynamics of such quantum phase transitions (both in the standard and in the noncommutative case) within the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics pointing out that the magnetization has discontinuities at critical values of…
We analyze the time-reversible mechanics of two irreversible simulation types. The first is a dissipative one-dimensional heat-conducting oscillator exposed to a temperature gradient in a three-dimensional phase space with coordinate $q$, momentum $p$, and thermostat control variable $ζ$. The second type simulates a conservative two-dimensional $N$-body fluid with $4N$ phase variables $\{q,p\}$ undergoing shock compression. Despite the time-reversibility of each of the three oscillator equations and all of the $4N$ manybody motion equations both types of simulation are irreversible, obeying th…
A novel experimental paradigm and a novel modelling approach are presented to investigate oscillatory human motor performance by means of a key concept from condensed matter physics, namely, thermodynamic state variables. To this end, in the novel experimental paradigm participants performed pendulum swinging movements at self-selected oscillation frequencies in contrast to earlier studies in which pacing signals were used. Moreover, in the novel modelling approach, a canonical-dissipative limit cycle oscillator model was used with a conservative part that accounts for nonharmonic oscillator c…
We study the thermodynamic quantities in the system of the $N$ independent harmonic oscillators with different frequencies in the Tsallis statistics of the entropic parameter $q$ ($1<q<2$) with escort average. The self-consistent equation is derived, and the physical quantities are calculated with the physical temperature. It is found that the number of oscillators is restricted below $1/(q-1)$. The energy, the Rényi entropy, and the Tsallis entropy are obtained by solving the self-consistent equation approximately at high physical temperature and/or for small deviation $q-1$. The energy is $q…
The thermodynamic implications for the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems are to date largely unexplored, especially for quantum many-body systems. In this paper we investigate the paradigmatic case of an array of nearest-neighbor coupled quantum harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal bath and subjected to a quench of the inter-oscillator coupling strength. We study the work done on the system and its irreversible counterpart, and characterize analytically the fluctuation relations of the ensuing out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Finally, we showcase an interesting functional l…
We present some novel thermodynamic ideas based on the Maupertuis principle. By considering Hamiltonians written in terms of appropriate action-angle variables we show that thermal states can be characterized by the action variables and by their evolution in time when the system is nonintegrable. We propose dynamical definitions for the equilibrium temperature and entropy as well as an expression for the nonequilibrium entropy valid for isolated systems with many degrees of freedom. This entropy is shown to increase in the relaxation to equilibrium of macroscopic systems with short-range inter…
We study the energy and entropies for $N$ independent harmonic oscillators in the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles in the Tsallis classical and the Tsallis quantum statistics of entropic parameter $q$, where $N$ is the number of the oscillators and the value of $q$ is larger than one. The energy and entropies are represented with the physical temperature, and the well-known expressions are obtained for the energy and Rényi entropy. The difference between the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles is the existence of the condition for $N$ and $q$ in the canonical ensemble: $N(q-1)…
The circadian oscillator exhibits remarkably high temporal precision, despite its exposure to several fluctuations. The central mechanism that protects the oscillator from fluctuations is a collective enhancement of precision, where a population of coupled oscillators displays higher temporal precision than that achieved without coupling. Since coupling is essentially information exchange between oscillators, we herein investigate the relation between the temporal precision and the information flow between oscillators in the linearized Kuramoto model by using stochastic thermodynamics. For gen…
Biochemical oscillations are ubiquitous in living organisms. In an autonomous system, not influenced by an external signal, they can only occur out of equilibrium. We show that they emerge through a generic nonequilibrium phase transition, with a characteristic qualitative behavior at criticality. The control parameter is the thermodynamic force, which must be above a certain threshold for the onset of biochemical oscillations. This critical behavior is characterized by the thermodynamic flux associated with the thermodynamic force, its diffusion coefficient, and the stationary distribution of…
The quantum thermodynamic behaviour of a charged oscillator in the presence of a magnetic field and coupled to a heat bath through different coupling schemes is obtained analytically. It is shown that finite dissipation substitutes the zero-coupling result of exponential decay of entropy by a power law behaviour at low temperature. For the coordinate-coordinates coupling scheme the low temperature explicit results for the case of Ohmic, exponentially correlated and more generalized heat bath models are derived. In all the above mentioned cases free energy and entropy vanish linearly with tempe…
It is demonstrated that the general theory of Casimir and van der Waals forces describes the interaction-induced equilibrium thermodynamic potentials of the damped harmonic oscillator bilinearly coupled to the environment. An extended model for a damped oscillator is suggested along the lines of the general theory of Casimir and van der Waals forces, and the corresponding thermodynamic quantities obtained. While the original model involves a heat bath consisting of a large number of free oscillators having infinitesimal damping functions, the extended model allows any generally admissible freq…
We construct a finite bath with variable temperature for quantum thermodynamic simulations in which heat flows between a system $\mathcal{S}$ and the bath environment $\mathcal{E}$ in time evolution of an initial $\mathcal{SE}$ pure state. The bath consists of harmonic oscillators that are not necessarily identical. Baths of various numbers of oscillators are considered; a bath with five oscillators is used in the simulations. The bath has a temperature-like level distribution. This leads to definition of a system-environment microcanonical temperature $T_\mathcal{SE}(t)$ which varies with tim…
We consider a harmonic oscillator under periodic driving and coupled to two harmonic-oscillator heat baths at different temperatures. We use the thermofield transformation with chain mapping for this setup, which allows us to study the unitary evolution of the system and the baths up to a time when the periodic steady state emerges in the system. We characterize this periodic steady state, and we show that, by tuning the system and the bath parameters, one can turn this system from an engine to an accelerator or even to a heater. The possibility to study the unitary evolution of the system and…
We study the thermodynamic properties of an ideal gas of fermions in a harmonic oscillator confining potential. The analogy between this problem and the de Haas-van Alphen effect is discussed and used to obtain analytical results for the chemical potential and specific heat in the case of both isotropic and anisotropic potentials. Step-like behaviour in the chemical potential, first noted in numerical studies, is obtained analytically and shown to result in an oscillatory behaviour of the specific heat when the particle number is varied. The origin of these oscillations is that part of the the…
The meaning of temperature in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is considered by using a forced harmonic oscillator in a heat bath, where we have two effective temperatures for the position and the momentum, respectively. We invent a concrete model of a thermometer to testify the validity of these different temperatures from the operational point of view. It is found that the measured temperature depends on a specific form of interaction between the system and a thermometer, which means the zeroth law of thermodynamics cannot be immediately extended to nonequilibrium cases.
We study the thermodynamic properties of a microscopic model of coupled oscillators that exhibits a dynamical phase transition from a desynchronized to a synchronized phase. We consider two different configurations for the thermodynamic forces applied on the oscillators, one resembling the macroscopic power grids, and one resembling autonomous molecular motors. We characterize the input and the output power as well as the efficiency at maximum power, providing analytic expressions for such quantities near the critical coupling strength. We discuss the role of the quenched disorder in the therm…
The study of quantum thermodynamics is key to the development of quantum thermal machines. In contrast to most of the previous proposals based on discrete strokes, here we consider a working substance that is permanently coupled to two or more baths at different temperatures and continuously driven. To this end, we investigate parametrically driven quantum harmonic oscillators coupled to heat baths via a collision model. Using a thermodynamically consistent local master equation, we derive the heat flows and power of the working device which can operate as an engine, refrigerator or accelerato…
In order to describe the thermodynamics of the glassy systems it has been recently introduced an extra parameter also called effective temperature which generalizes the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) to systems off-equilibrium and supposedly describes thermal fluctuations around the aging state. Here we investigate the applicability of a zero-th law for non-equilibrium glassy systems based on these effective temperatures by studying two coupled subsystems of harmonic oscillators with Monte Carlo dynamics. We analyze in detail two types of dynamics: 1) sequential dynamics where the coupl…
We show the link between U1 lattice gauge theories and the off-equilibrium thermodynamics of a large class of nonlinear oscillators networks. The coupling between the oscillators plays the role of a gauge field, or connection, on the network. The thermodynamical forces that drive energy flows are expressed in terms of the curvature of the connection, analogous to a geometric phase. The model, which holds both close and far from equilibrium, predicts the existence of persistent energy and particle currents circulating in close loops through the network. The predictions are confirmed by numerica…
We show that the infinite-dimensional representation of the recently introduced Logistic algebra can be interpreted as a non-trivial generalization of the Heisenberg or oscillator algebra. This allow us to construct a quantum Hamiltonian having the energy spectrum given by the logistic map. We analyze the Hamiltonian of a solid whose collective modes of vibration are described by this generalized oscillator and compute the thermodynamic properties of the model in the two-cycle and r=3.6785 chaotic region of the logistic map.
Simulations are performed of a small quantum system interacting with a quantum environment. The system consists of various initial states of two harmonic oscillators coupled to give normal modes. The environment is "designed" by its level pattern to have a thermodynamic temperature. A random coupling causes the system and environment to become entangled in the course of time evolution. The approach to a Boltzmann distribution is observed, and effective fitted temperatures close to the designed temperature are obtained. All initial pure states of the system are driven to equilibrium at very sim…
We study the universal thermodynamic properties of systems consisting of many coupled oscillators operating in the vicinity of a homogeneous oscillating instability. In the thermodynamic limit, the Hopf bifurcation is a dynamic critical point far from equilibrium described by a statistical field theory. We perform a perturbative renormalization group study, and show that at the critical point a generic relation between correlation and response functions appears. At the same time the fluctuation-dissipation relation is strongly violated.
We perform an analytic study on the stochastic thermodynamics of a small classical particle trapped in a time dependent single-well potential in the highly underdamped limit. It is shown that the nonequilibrium probability density function for the system's energy is a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution (as in equilibrium) with a closed form time dependent effective temperature and fractional degrees of freedom. We also find that the solvable model satisfies the Crooks fluctuation theorem, as it is expected. Moreover, we compute the average work in this isothermal process and characterize analytica…

In this work we present a formalism to describe non equilibrium conditions in systems with a discretized energy spectrum, such as quantum systems. We develop a formalism based on a combination of Gibbs-Shannon entropy and information thermodynamics that arrives to a generalization of the De-Brujin identity applicable to discrete and non-symmetric distributions. This allows to define the concept of a thermodynamic temperature with a different, albeit complementary meaning to the equilibrium kinetic temperature of a system. The theory is applied to Bosonic and Fermionic cases represented by an h…
In this article, we present an approach for the thermodynamics of phase oscillators induced by an internal multiplicative noise. We analytically derive the free energy, entropy, internal energy, and specific heat. In this framework, the formulation of the first law of thermodynamics requires the definition of a synchronization field acting on the phase oscillators. By introducing the synchronization field, we have consistently obtained the susceptibility and analyzed its behavior. This allows us to characterize distinct phases in the system, which we have denoted as synchronized and parasynchr…
In this paper we study the thermodynamics of a crystalline solid by applying q-deformed algebra of Fibonacci oscillators through the generalized Fibonacci sequence of two real and independent deformation parameters q1 and q2. We find a (q1, q2)-deformed Hamiltonian and consequently the q-deformed thermodynamic quantities. The results led us to interpret the deformation parameters acting as disturbance or impurities factors modifying the characteristics of a crystal structure. More specifically, we found the possibility of adjusting the Fibonacci oscillators to describe the change of thermal co…
We study here the difference between quantum statistical treatments and semi-classical ones, using as the main research tool a semi-classical, shift-invariant Fisher information measure built up with Husimi distributions. Its semi-classical character notwithstanding, this measure also contains information of a purely quantal nature. Such a tool allows us to refine the celebrated Lieb bound for Wehrl entropies and to discover thermodynamic-like relations that involve the degree of delocalization. Fisher-related thermal uncertainty relations are developed and the degree of purity of canonical di…
Stuart-Landau limit-cycle oscillators are a paradigm in the study of coherent and incoherent limit cycles. In this work, we generalize the standard Stuart-Landau dimer model to include effects due to an inertia-like term and noise and study its dynamics and stochastic thermodynamics. In the absence of noise (zero-temperature limit), the dynamics show the emergence of a new bistable phase where coherent and incoherent limit cycles coexist. At finite temperatures, we develop a stochastic thermodynamic framework based on the dynamics of a charged particle in a magnetic field to identify physicall…
