The problem of the harmonic oscillator with a centrally located delta function potential can be exactly solved in one dimension where the eigenfunctions are expressed as superpositions of the Hermite polynomials or as confluent hypergeometric functions in general. The eigenfunctions obtained exactly are difficult to visualise and hence to gain more insight, one can attempt using model wave functions which are explicitly and simply expressed. Here we apply the variational method to verify how close one can approach the exact ground state eigenvalues using such trial wave functions. We obtain the estimates of the ground state energies which are closer to the exact values in comparison to earlier approximate results for both the repulsive and attractive delta potentials.
We obtain accurate eigenvalues of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian of the form $H_{g}=H+gδ(x)$, where $δ(x)$ is the Dirac delta function. We show that the well known Rayleigh-Ritz variational method is a suitable approach provided that the basis set takes into account the effect of the Dirac delta on the wavefunction.
We propose an experimental configuration, within an ion trap, by which a quantum mechanical delta-kicked harmonic oscillator could be realized, and investigated. We show how to directly measure the sensitivity of the ion motion to small variations in the external parameters.
We obtain the tomogram of squeezed correlated states of a quantum parametric damped oscillator in an explicit form. We study the damping within the framework of the Caldirola--Kanai model and chose the parametric excitation in the form of a very short pulse simulated by a delta-kick of frequency; the squeezing phenomenon is reviewed. The cases of strong and weak damping are investigated.
The one-dimensional time-independent Green's function $G_0$ of a quantum simple harmonic oscillator system ($V_0(x)=m ω^2 x^2/2$) can be obtained by solving the equation directly. It has a compact expression, which gives correct eigenvalues and eigenfunctions easily. The Green's function $G$ with an additional delta-function potential can be obtained readily. The same technics of solving the Green's function $G_0$ can be used to solve the eigenvalue problem of the simple harmonic oscillator with an generic delta-function potential at an arbitrary site, i.e. $V_1(x)\propto δ(x-a)$. The Wronskia…
We propose an efficient procedure for numerically evolving the Delta Kicked Harmonic Oscillator. The method allows for longer and more accurate simulations of the system as well as a simple procedure for calculating the systems Floquet eigenstates and quasi-energies. The method is used to examine the dynamical behaviour of the system in cases where the ratio of the kicking frequency to the systems natural frequency is both rational and irrational.
Under certain conditions, the quantum delta-kicked harmonic oscillator displays quantum resonances. We consider an atom-optical realization of the delta-kicked harmonic oscillator, and present a theoretical discussion of the quantum resonances that could be observed in such a system. Having outlined our model of the physical system we derive the values at which quantum resonances occur and relate these to potential experimental parameters. We discuss the observable effects of the quantum resonances, using the results of numerical simulations. We develop a physical explanation for the quantum r…
We determine the generating function of the harmonic oscillator by a new method. Using this generating function we derive the eigenfunctions of the moment p. We find that the normalization of these eigenfunctions is a real and not complex number with phase factor chosen equal one (standard books of quantum mechanics). We prove that the integral of the delta function is equal to one and we derive the oscillator propagator.
We derive the energy levels associated with the even-parity wave functions of the harmonic oscillator with an additional delta-function potential at the origin. Our results bring to the attention of students a non-trivial and analytical example of a modification of the usual harmonic oscillator potential, with emphasis on the modification of the boundary conditions at the origin. This problem calls the attention of the students to an inaccurate statement in quantum mechanics textbooks often found in the context of solution of the harmonic oscillator problem.
We have applied a collocation approach to obtain the numerical solution to the stationary Schrödinger equation for systems of coupled oscillators. The dependence of the discretized Hamiltonian on scale and angle parameters is exploited to obtain optimal convergence to the exact results. A careful comparison with results taken from the literature is performed, showing the advantages of the present approach.
As an application of a recently developed variational perturbation theory we find the first 22 terms of the convergent strong-coupling series expansion for the ground state energy of the quartic anharmonic oscillator.
We discuss the roles of the macroscopic limit and of different system-environment interactions in the quantum-classical transition for a chaotic system. We consider the kicked harmonic oscillator subject to reservoirs that correspond in the classical case to purely dissipative or purely diffusive behavior, in a situation that can be implemented in ion trap experiments. In the dissipative case, we derive an expression for the time at which quantum and classical predictions become different (breaking time) and show that a complete quantum-classical correspondence is not possible in the chaotic r…
The purposes of this work are (1) to show that the appropriate generalizations of the oscillator algebra permit the construction of a wide set of nonlinear coherent states in unified form; and (2) to clarify the likely contradiction between the nonclassical properties of such nonlinear coherent states and the possibility of finding a classical analog for them since they are P-represented by a delta function. In (1) we prove that a class of nonlinear coherent states can be constructed to satisfy a closure relation that is expressed uniquely in terms of the Meijer G-function. This property autom…
We prove a powerful scaling property for the extremality condition in the recently developed variational perturbation theory which converts divergent perturbation expansions into exponentially fast convergent ones. The proof is given for the energy eigenvalues of an anharmonic oscillator with an arbitrary $x^p$-potential. The scaling property greatly increases the accuracy of the results.
A new variational perturbation theory is developed based on the $q-$deformed oscillator. It is shown that the new variational perturbation method provides 200 or 10 times better accuracy for the ground state energy of anharmonic oscillator than the Gaussian and the improved Gaussian approximation, respectively.
We consider the problem of designing a variety of "system guided" basis sets for quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators. Using ideas based on supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we design canonical transformations of the usual position and momentum to generate generalized "Cartesian-like positions, W and momenta, p_W" with unit Poisson brackets. These are quantized following Dirac, leading to an infinite family of potential "operator observables". The fundamental issue is that all but one of the operators are not Hermitian (formally self-adjoint) in the original position representation. We sh…
We propose a variational perturbation method based on the observation that eigenvalues of each parity sector of both the anharmonic and double-well oscillators are approximately equi-distanced. The generalized deformed algebra satisfied by the invariant operators of the systems provides well defined Hilbert spaces to both of the oscillators. There appears a natural expansion parameter defined by the ratios of three distance scales of the trial wavefunctions. The energies of the ground state and the first order excited state, in the $0^{th}$ order variational approximation, are obtained with er…
The Harmonic Oscillator Potential Perturbed by a Combination of Linear and Non-linear Dirac Delta Interactions with Application to Bose-Einstein Condensation
In this work, we study the fluctuation relation and the second law of thermodynamics within a quantum linear oscillator externally driven over the period of time t = tau. To go beyond the standard approach (the two-point projective measurement one) to this subject and also render it discussed in both quantum and classical domains on the single footing, we recast this standard approach in terms of the Wigner function and its propagator in the phase space (x,p). With the help of the canonical transformation from (x,p) to the angle-action coordinates (ϕ,I), we can then derive a measurement-free (…
Quantum critical point is one key concept for studying many-body physics but its investigation may be resource-demanding even for a quantum computer due to the intrinsic complexity. In this paper, we propose an approach based on variational quantum eigensolver(VQE), dubbed as Delta-VQE, for locating the quantum critical point using only shallow quantum circuits. With Delta-VQE, the critical point can be identified as a most confusing point, quantified as zero difference between two variational energies that use two representative reference states of distinct phases of matter. Remarkably, the s…
In our earlier papers we have proposed an analytically solvable model for the two state curve crossing problem which assumes the coupling to be a Dirac delta function. It is used to calculate the effect of curve crossing on electronic absorption spectrum and Resonance Raman excitation profile for the case of harmonic potentials. In this paper we have extended our model to deal with the curve crossing induced dissociation cases. Our method is used in this paper to calculate the effect of curve crossing induced dissociation on electronic absorption spectrum and Resonance Raman excitation profile…
Quantum back action imposes fundamental sensitivity limits to the majority of quantum measurements. The effect results from the unavoidable contamination of the measured parameter with the quantum noise of a meter. Back action evading measurements take advantage of the quantum correlations introduced by the system under study to the meter and allow overcoming the fundamental limitations. The measurements are frequently restricted in their bandwidth due to a finite response time of the system components. Here we show that probing a mechanical oscillator with a dichromatic field with frequencies…
We obtain the eigenvalues of the harmonic oscillator in a space with a screw dislocation. By means of a suitable nonorthogonal basis set with variational parameters we obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues for an arbitrary range of values of the space-deformation parameter. The energies exhibit a rich structure of avoided crossings in terms of such model parameter.
In this paper we introduce a generalization to the algebraic Bender-Wu recursion relation for the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the anharmonic oscillator. We extend this well known formalism to the time-dependent quantum statistical Schroedinger equation, thus obtaining the imaginary-time evolution amplitude by solving a recursive set of ordinary differential equations. This approach enables us to evaluate global and local quantum statistical quantities of the anharmonic oscillator to much higher orders than by evaluating Feynman diagrams. We probe our perturbative results by deriving …
We show that heating of harmonically trapped ions by periodic delta kicks is dramatically enhanced at isolated values of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. At these values, quasienergy eigenstates localized on island structures undergo avoided crossings with extended web-states.
We revisit the problem of preparing a mechanical oscillator in the vicinity of its quantum-mechanical ground state by means of feedback cooling based on continuous optical detection of the oscillator position. In the parameter regime relevant to ground state cooling, the optical back-action and imprecision noise set the bottleneck of achievable cooling and must be carefully balanced. This can be achieved by adapting the phase of the local oscillator in the homodyne detection realizing a so-called variational measurement. The trade-off between accurate position measurement and minimal disturban…
A variational analysis is presented for the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian operator H, where H = -(d/dx)^2 + Bx^2+ A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, and alpha and lambda are real positive parameters. The formalism makes use of a basis provided by exact solutions of Schroedinger's equation for the Gol'dman and Krivchenkov Hamiltonian (alpha = 2), and the corresponding matrix elements that were previously found. For all the discrete eigenvalues the method provides bounds which improve as the dimension of the basis set is increased. Extension to the N-dimensional case in arbitrary angul…
For a system of coupled anharmonic oscillators we compare the convergence rate of the variational collocation approach presented recently by Amore and Fernandez (2010 Phys.Scr.81 045011) with the one obtained using the optimized Rayleigh-Ritz (RR) method. The monotonic convergence of the RR method allows us to obtain more accurate results at a lower computational cost.
A variationally improved Sturmian approximation for solving time-independent Schrödinger equation is developed. This approximation is used to obtain the energy levels of a quartic anharmonic oscillator, a quartic potential, and a Gaussian potential. The results are compared with those of the perturbation theory, the WKB approximation, and the accurate numerical values.
The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and illustrate, once again, the potency of the variational technique as an approximation procedure for the quantization of quantum mechanical systems. By choosing particle-in-a-box wavefunctions as trial wavefunctions, with the size of the box as the variation parameter, approximate eigenenergies and the corresponding eigenfunctions are obtained for the one dimensional free harmonic oscillator.
We study a harmonic molecule confined to a one--dimensional box with impenetrable walls. We explicitly consider the symmetry of the problem for the cases of different and equal masses. We propose suitable variational functions and compare the approximate energies given by the variation method and perturbation theory with accurate numerical ones for a wide range of values of the box length. We analyze the limits of small and large box size.
A variational principle enabling one to compute individual Floquet states of a periodically time-dependent quantum system is formulated, and successfully tested against the benchmark system provided by the analytically solvable model of a linearly driven harmonic oscillator. The principle is particularly well suited for tracing individual Floquet states through parameter space, and may allow one to obtain Floquet states even for very high-dimensional systems which cannot be treated by the known standard numerical methods.
Casimir friction is analyzed for a pair of dielectric particles in relative motion. We first adopt a microscopic model for harmonically oscillating particles at finite temperature T moving non-relativistically with constant velocity. We use a statistical-mechanical description where time-dependent correlations are involved. This description is physical and direct, and, in spite of its simplicity, is able to elucidate the essentials of the problem. This treatment elaborates upon, and extends, an earlier theory of ours back in 1992. The energy change Delta E turns out to be finite in general, co…
The shift of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature for a homogenous weakly interacting Bose gas in leading order in the scattering length `a' is computed for given particle density `n.' Variational perturbation theory is used to resum the corresponding perturbative series for Delta<phi^2>/Nu in a classical three-dimensional scalar field theory with coupling `u' and where the physical case of N=2 field components is generalized to arbitrary N. Our results for N=1,2,4 are in agreement with recent Monte-Carlo simulations; for N=2, we obtain Delta T_c/T_c = 1.27 +/- 0.11 a n^(1/3). We use sev…
We evaluate perturbatively the density matrix in the low-temperature limit and thus the ground-state wave function of the anharmonic oscillator up to second order in the coupling constant. We then employ Kleinert's variational perturbation theory to determine the ground-state wave function for all coupling strengths.
The variational perturbation theory for wave functions, which has been shown to work well for bound states of the anharmonic oscillator, is applied to resonance states of the anharmonic oscillator with negative coupling constant. We obtain uniformly accurate wave functions starting from the bound states.
A model consisting of a Harmonic Oscillator well and a linear potential, coupled by Dirac delta function, is solved. We find the exact analytical expressions for Green's function for this problem. This Green's functions are used to calculate the Raman excitation profile and electronic absorption spectrum.
The Dirac delta function and the Feynman propagator of the harmonic oscillator are found by a simple calculation using Fock Bargmann space and the generating function of the harmonic oscillator. With help of the Schwinger generating function of Wigner's D-matrix elements we derive the generating function of spherical harmonics, the quadratic transformations and the generating functions of: the characters of SU (2), Legendre and Gegenbauer polynomials. We also deduce the van der Wearden invariant of 3-j symbols of SU (2). Using the Fock Bargmann space and its complex conjugate we find the integ…

Within the approach of Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics associated with the variational method a recipe to construct the superpotential of three dimensional confined potentials in general is proposed. To illustrate the construction, the energies of the Harmonic Oscillator and the Hulthén potential, both confined in three dimensions are evaluated. Comparison with the corresponding results of other approximative and exact numerical results is presented.
In our previous paper I (del Valle--Turbiner, Int. J. Mod. Phys. A34, 1950143, 2019) it was developed the formalism to study the general $D$-dimensional radial anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(r)= \frac{1}{g^2}\,\hat{V}(gr)$. It was based on the Perturbation Theory (PT) in powers of $g$ (weak coupling regime) and in inverse, fractional powers of $g$ (strong coupling regime) in both $r$-space and in $(gr)$-space, respectively. As the result it was introduced - the Approximant - a locally-accurate uniform compact approximation of a wave function. If taken as a trial function in variationa…
We determine the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator where the coordinates and momenta are assumed to obey the modified commutation relations [x_i,p_j]=i hbar[(1+ beta p^2) delta_{ij} + beta' p_i p_j]. These commutation relations are motivated by the fact they lead to the minimal length uncertainty relations which appear in perturbative string theory. Our solutions illustrate how certain features of string theory may manifest themselves in simple quantum mechanical systems through the modification of the canonical commutation relations. We discuss whether such effe…

We introduce various optimization schemes for highly accurate calculation of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators. We present several methods of analytically fixing the nonlinear variational parameter specified by the domain of the trigonometric basis functions. We show that the optimized parameter enables us to determine the energy spectrum to an arbitrary accuracy. Also, using the harmonic oscillator basis functions, we indicate that the resulting optimal frequency agrees with the one obtained by the principle of the minimal sensitivity.
Using Schwinger Variational Principle we solve the problem of quantum harmonic oscillator with time dependent frequency. Here, we do not take the usual approach which implicitly assumes an adiabatic behavior for the frequency. Instead, we propose a new solution where the frequency only needs continuity in its first derivative or to have a finite set of removable discontinuities.
We show that the asymptotic formula for $π$, the Wallis formula, that was related with quantum mechanics and the hydrogen atom in \cite{HF}, can also be related to the harmonic oscillator using a quantum duality between these two systems. As a corollary we show that this very interesting asymptotic formula is not related with the hydrogen atom or quantum mechanics itself but with a clever choice of a trial function and a potential in the Schroedinger equation when we use the variational approach to calculate the ground state energy associated with the given potential function.
We consider the linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap with $\cal {PT}$-symmetric double-delta function loss and gain terms. We verify that the conditions for the applicability of a recent proposition by Mityagin and Siegl on singular perturbations of harmonic oscillator type self-adjoint operators are fulfilled. In both the linear and nonlinear case we calculate numerically the shifts of the unperturbed levels with quantum numbers $n$ of up to 89 in dependence on the strength of the non-Hermiticity and compare with rigorous estimates derive…
