We demonstrate how insights gained from reformulating the problem of quantum teleportation into one of reversing quantum operations, and designing optimum completely positive maps for teleportation, can enable one to explore optimal approximate reversal of quantum operations on a single qubit. In particular, we show that the optimal approximate reversal of a generalized depolarizing channel can be achieved using only unitary transformations. We also show that for a quantum channel, which reveals some information about the input state, extremal completely positive maps and not unitary transformations yield optimal approximate reversal.
By the standard second law of thermodynamics, heat spontaneously flows from a hotter body to a colder body. However, quantum systems in which quantum correlations play a prominent role can exhibit a non-classical reversal of such heat flow. We propose a quantum system consisting of a chain of qubits, each in local Gibbs states, where only adjacent qubits are allowed to thermally interact. By controlling initial quantum correlations along the chain, we then demonstrate non-classical heat reversal for the special case of a three-qubit chain on a quantum computer. We explore multiple initial cond…
Spontaneous photon scattering by an atomic qubit is a notable example of environment-induced error and is a fundamental limit to the fidelity of quantum operations. In the scattering process the qubit loses its distinctive and coherent character owing to its entanglement with the photon. Using a single trapped ion we show that by utilizing the information carried by the photon we are able to coherently reverse this process and correct for the scattering error. We further used quantum process tomography to characterize the photon-scattering error and its correction scheme and demonstrate a corr…
The ability to simulate one Hamiltonian with another is an important primitive in quantum information processing. In this paper, a simulation method for arbitrary $σ_z \otimes σ_z$ interaction based on Hadamard matrices (quant-ph/9904100) is generalized for any pairwise interaction. We describe two applications of the generalized framework. First, we obtain a class of protocols for selecting an arbitrary interaction term in an n-qubit Hamiltonian. This class includes the scheme given in quant-ph/0106064v2. Second, we obtain a class of protocols for inverting an arbitrary, possibly unknown n-qu…
For n an even number of qubits and v a unitary evolution, a matrix decomposition v=k1 a k2 of the unitary group is explicitly computable and allows for study of the dynamics of the concurrence entanglement monotone. The side factors k1 and k2 of this Concurrence Canonical Decomposition (CCD) are concurrence symmetries, so the dynamics reduce to consideration of the a factor. In this work, we provide an explicit numerical algorithm computing v=k1 a k2 for n odd. Further, in the odd case we lift the monotone to a two-argument function, allowing for a theory of concurrence dynamics in odd qubits.…
Readout and retrieval processes are proposed for efficient, high-fidelity quantum state transfer between a matter qubit, encoded in the level structure of a single atom or ion, and a photonic qubit, encoded in a time-reversal-symmetric single-photon wave packet. They are based on controlling spontaneous photon emission and absorption of a matter qubit on demand in free space by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. As these processes do not involve mode selection by high-finesse cavities or photon transport through optical fibers, they offer interesting perspectives as basic building blocks for …
As the number of qubits available on noisy quantum computers grows, it will become necessary to efficiently select a subset of physical qubits to use in a quantum computation. For any given quantum program and device there are many ways to assign physical qubits for execution of the program, and assignments will differ in performance due to the variability in quality across qubits and entangling operations on a single device. Evaluating the performance of each assignment using fidelity estimation introduces significant experimental overhead and will be infeasible for many applications, while r…

We demonstrate the conditional reversal of a weak (partial-collapse) quantum measurement on a photonic qubit. The weak quantum measurement causes a nonunitary transformation of a qubit which is subsequently reversed to the original state after a successful reversing operation. Both the weak measurement and the reversal operation are implemented linear optically. The state recovery fidelity, determined by quantum process tomography, is shown to be over 94% for partial-collapse strength up to 0.9. We also experimentally study information gain due to the weak measurement and discuss the role of t…

We expand the time reversal symmetry arguments of quantum mechanics, originally proposed by Wigner in the context of unitary dynamics, to contain situations including generalized measurements for monitored quantum systems. We propose a scheme to derive the time reversed measurement operators by considering the Schrödinger picture dynamics of a qubit coupled to a measuring device, and show that the time reversed measurement operators form a Positive Operator Valued Measure (POVM) set. We present three particular examples to illustrate time reversal of measurement operators: (1) the Gaussian spi…
We derive the analytical expression of local quantum uncertainty for three-qubit X-states. We give also the expressions of quantum discord and the negativity. A comparison of these three quantum correlations quantifiers is discussed in the special cases of mixed GHZ states and Bell-type states. We find that local quantum uncertainty gives the same amount of non-classical correlations as are measured by entropic quantum discord and goes beyond negativity. We also discuss the dynamics of non-classical correlations under the effect of phase damping, depolarizing and phase reversal channels. We fi…
In this paper, we propose a scheme to enhance trapping of entanglement of two qubits in the environment of a photonic band gap material. Our entanglement trapping promotion scheme makes use of combined weak measurements and quantum measurement reversals. The optimal promotion of entanglement trapping can be acquired with a reasonable finite success probability by adjusting measurement strengths.
A general two qubit system expressed in terms of the complete set of unit and fifteen traceless, Hermitian Dirac matrices, is shown to exhibit novel features of this system. The well-known physical interpretations associated with the relativistic Dirac equation involving the symmetry operations of time-reversal T, charge conjugation C, parity P, and their products are reinterpreted here by examining their action on the basic Bell states. The transformation properties of the Bell basis states under these symmetry operations also reveal that C is the only operator that does not mix the Bell stat…
A protocol of quantum dense coding protection of two qubits is proposed in amplitude damping (AD) channel using weak measurement and reversal measurement. It is found that the capacity of quantum dense coding under the weak measurement and reversal measurement is always greater than that without weak measurement and reversal measurement. When the protocol is applied, for the AD channels with different damping coefficient, the result reflects that quantum entanglement can be protected and quantum dense coding becomes successful.
The uncertainty principle is an inherent characteristic of quantum mechanics. This principle can be formulated in various form. Fundamentally, this principle can be expressed in terms of the standard deviation of the measured observables. In quantum information theory the preferred mathematical quantity to express the entropic uncertainty relation is the Shannon's entropy. In this work, we consider the generalized entropic uncertainty relation in which there is an additional particle as a quantum memory. Alice measures on her particle $A$ and Bob, with memory particle $B$, predicts the Alice's…
We demonstrate the ability to control the spontaneous emission from a superconducting qubit coupled to a cavity. The time domain profile of the emitted photon is shaped into a symmetric truncated exponential. The experiment is enabled by a qubit coupled to a cavity, with a coupling strength that can be tuned in tens of nanoseconds while maintaining a constant dressed state emission frequency. Symmetrization of the photonic wave packet will enable use of photons as flying qubits for transfering the quantum state between atoms in distant cavities.
In the presence of time-reversal symmetry, quantum interference gives strong corrections to the electric conductivity of disordered systems. The self-interference of an electron wavefunction traveling time-reversed paths leads to effects such as weak localization and universal conductance fluctuations. Here, we investigate the effects of broken time-reversal symmetry in a driven artificial two-level system. Using a superconducting flux qubit, we implement scattering events as multiple Landau-Zener transitions by driving the qubit periodically back and forth through an avoided crossing. Interfe…
We experimentally demonstrate the nonlocal reversal of a partial-collapse quantum measurement on two-photon entangled state. Both the partial measurement and the reversal operation are implemented in linear optics with two displaced Sagnac interferometers, which are characterized by single qubit quantum process tomography. The recovered state is measured by quantum state tomography and its nonlocality is characterized by testing the Bell inequality. Our result will be helpful in quantum communication and quantum error correction.
Nonstoquastic Hamiltonians are hard to simulate due to the sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo simulation. It is however unclear whether nonstoquasticity can lead to advantage in quantum annealing. Here we show that YY-interaction between the qubits makes the adiabatic path during quantum annealing, and therefore the performance, dependent on spin-reversal transformations. With the right choice of spin-reversal transformation, a nonstoquastic Hamiltonian with YY-interaction can outperform stoquastic Hamiltonians with similar parameters. We introduce an optimization protocol to determine the op…
In this work, we study quantum many-body teleportation, where a single qubit is teleported through a strongly-interacting quantum system, as a result of a scrambling unitary and local measurements on a few qubits. Usual many-body teleportation protocols require a double copy of the system, and backward time evolution, we demonstrate that teleportation is possible in the 2D spin-$1/2$ XY model, without these constraints. The necessary long-range entanglement for teleportation is generated from the model hosting special eigenstates known as rainbow scars. We outline a specific protocol for prepa…
We have performed an experiment to demonstrate the approximate time reversal of a "chaotic" time evolution of atomic deBroglie waves. We use ultra cold atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quantum $δ$-kicked rotor experiment, and show that an initial state can be approximately re-created even after a period of "chaotic" evolution (a number of kicks). As this mechanism only works for a very narrow range of momenta, the net effect is a narrowing of the momentum distribution after the kick sequence.
A two-qubit quantum gate is realized using electronic excited states in a single ion with an energy separation on the order of a terahertz times the Planck constant as a qubit. Two phase locked lasers are used to excite a stimulated Raman transition between two metastable states $D_{3/2}$ and $D_{5/2}$ separated by 1.82 THz in a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion to construct a qubit, which is used as the target bit for the Cirac-Zoller two-qubit controlled NOT gate. Quantum dynamics conditioned on a motional qubit is clearly observed as a fringe reversal in Ramsey interferometry.
Entangled states in high dimensional systems are of great interest due to the extended possibilities they provide in quantum information processing. Recently, Sun et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 052323 (2010)] and Kim et al. [Nat. Phys. 8, 117 (2012)] pointed out that weak measurement and quantum weak measurement reversal can actively combat decoherence. We generalize their studies from qubits to qutrits under amplitude damping decoherence. We find that the qutrit-qutrit entanglement can be partially retrieved for certain initial states when only weak measurement reversals are performed. However, we …
Enhancing the quantum correlations in realistic quantum systems interacting with the environment of finite temperature is an important subject in quantum information processing. In this paper, we use weak measurement and measurement reversal to enhance the quantum correlations in a quantum system consisting of two particles. The transitions of the quantum correlations measured by the local quantum uncertainty of qubit-qubit and qutrit-qutrit quantum systems under generalized amplitude damping channels are investigated. We show that, after the weak measurement and measurement reversal, the join…
Due to the interaction with the environment, a quantum state is subjected to decoherence which becomes one of the biggest problems for practical quantum computation. Amplitude damping is one of the most important decoherence processes. Here, we show that general two-qubit mixed states undergoing an amplitude damping can be almost completely restored using a reversal procedure. This reversal procedure through CNOT and Hadamard gates, could also protect the entanglement of two-qubit mixed states, when it undergoes general amplitude damping. Moreover, in the presence of uncertainty in the underly…
We propose a time-independent Hamiltonian protocol for the reversal of qubit ordering in a chain of $N$ spins. Our protocol has an easily implementable nearest-neighbor, transverse-field Ising model Hamiltonian with time-independent, non-uniform couplings. Under appropriate normalization, we implement this state reversal three times faster than a naive approach using SWAP gates, in time comparable to a protocol of Raussendorf [Phys. Rev. A 72, 052301 (2005)] that requires dynamical control. We also prove lower bounds on state reversal by using results on the entanglement capacity of Hamiltonia…
Even though the time-reversal is unphysical (it corresponds to the complex conjugation of the density matrix), for some restricted set of states it can be achieved unitarily, typically when there is a common de-phasing in a n-level system. However, in the presence of multiple phases (i. e. a different de-phasing for each element of an orthogonal basis occurs) the time reversal is no longer physically possible. In this paper we derive the channel which optimally approaches in fidelity the time-reversal of multi-phase equatorial states in arbitrary (finite) dimension. We show that, in contrast t…
The process of measurement of a phase qubit by a resonant microwave cavity is considered for various interactions between the qubit and the cavity. A novel quasiclassical approach is described based on adiabatic reversals of the qubit state by an effective field. A similar approach was implemented earlier for the detection of electron and nuclear spins using magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM), but this approach has not previously been used for the measurement of a quantum state. Quasiclassical and quantum regimes are described. We consider both linear and nonlinear resonators. The effe…
Joint measurements of qubit observables have recently been studied in conjunction with quantum information processing tasks such as cloning. Considerations of such joint measurements have until now been restricted to a certain class of observables that can be characterized by a form of covariance. Here we investigate conditions for the joint measurability of arbitrary pairs of qubit observables. For pairs of noncommuting sharp qubit observables, a notion of approximate joint measurement is introduced. Optimal approximate joint measurements are shown to lie in the class of covariant joint measu…
We introduce a generalized concept of quantum teleportation in the framework of quantum measurement and reversing operation. Our framework makes it possible to find an optimal protocol for quantum teleportation enabling a faithful transfer of unknown quantum states with maximum success probability up to the fundamental limit of the no-cloning theorem. Moreover, an optimized protocol in this generalized approach allows us to overcome noise in quantum channel beyond the reach of existing teleportation protocols without requiring extra qubit resources. Our proposed framework is applicable to mult…
We present methods for implementing arbitrary permutations of qubits under interaction constraints. Our protocols make use of previous methods for rapidly reversing the order of qubits along a path. Given nearest-neighbor interactions on a path of length $n$, we show that there exists a constant $ε\approx 0.034$ such that the quantum routing time is at most $(1-ε)n$, whereas any swap-based protocol needs at least time $n-1$. This represents the first known quantum advantage over swap-based routing methods and also gives improved quantum routing times for realistic architectures such as grids. …
In condensed matter systems, coherent backscattering and quantum interference in the presence of time-reversal symmetry lead to well-known phenomena such as weak localization (WL) and universal conductance fluctuations (UCF). Here we use multi-pass Landau-Zener transitions at the avoided crossing of a highly-coherent superconducting qubit to emulate these phenomena. The average and standard deviation of the qubit transition rate exhibit a dip and peak when the driving waveform is time-reversal symmetric, analogous to WL and UCF, respectively. The higher coherence of this qubit enabled the real…
Within the context of quantum teleportation, a proposed intuitive model to explain bipartite entanglement describes the scheme as being the same qubit of information evolving along and against the flow of time of an external observer. We investigate the physicality of such a model by applying the time-reversal of the Schrodinger equation in the teleportation context. To do so, we first lay down the theory of time-reversal applied to the circuit model and then show that the outcome of a teleportation-like circuit is consistent with the usual tensor product treatment, thus independent of the phy…
Scalable and fault-tolerant quantum computation will require error correction. This will demand constant measurement of many-qubit observables, implemented using a vast number of CNOT gates. Indeed, practically all operations performed by a fault-tolerant device will be these CNOTs, or equivalent two-qubit controlled operations. It is therefore important to devise benchmarks for these gates that explicitly quantify their effectiveness at this task. Here we develop such benchmarks, and demonstrate their use by applying them to a range of differently implemented controlled gates and a particular…
Genuine 3-qubit entanglement comes in two different inconvertible types represented by the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and the W state. We describe a specific method based on local positive operator valued measures and classical communication that can convert the ideal N-qubit GHZ state to a state arbitrarily close to the ideal N-qubit W state. We then experimentally implement this scheme in the 3-qubit case and characterize the input and the final state using 3-photon quantum state tomography.
We introduce an approximate description of an $N$-qubit state, which contains sufficient information to estimate the expectation value of any observable with precision independent of $N$. We show, in fact, that the error in the estimation of the observables' expectation values decreases as the inverse of the square root of the number of the system's identical preparations and increases, at most, linearly in a suitably defined, $N$-independent, seminorm of the observables. Building the approximate description of the $N$-qubit state only requires repetitions of single-qubit rotations followed by…
We study the effect of spin-orbit coupling on quantum gates produced by pulsing the exchange interaction between two single electron quantum dots. Spin-orbit coupling enters as a small spin precession when electrons tunnel between dots. For adiabatic pulses the resulting gate is described by a unitary operator acting on the four-dimensional Hilbert space of two qubits. If the precession axis is fixed, time-symmetric pulsing constrains the set of possible gates to those which, when combined with single qubit rotations, can be used in a simple CNOT construction. Deviations from time-symmetric pu…
We consider joint measurement of two and three unsharp qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type joint measurement model for qubits. We investigate the effect of initial state of the detectors on the unsharpness of the measurement as well as the post-measurement state of the system. Particular emphasis is given on a physical understanding of the POVM to PVM transition in the model and entanglement between system and detectors. Two approaches for characterizing the unsharpness of the measurement and the resulting measurement uncertainty relations are considered. The corresponding measures of…
Most of the research done on quantum error correction studies an error model in which each qubit is affected by noise, independently of the other qubits. In this paper we study a different noise model -- one in which the noise may be correlated with the qubits it acts upon. We show both positive and negative results. On the one hand, we show controlled-X errors cannot be perfectly corrected, yet can be approximately corrected with sub-constant approximation error. On the other hand, we show that no non-trivial quantum error correcting code can approximately correct controlled phase error with …
Any kind of quantum resource useful in different information processing tasks is vulnerable to several types of environmental noise. Here we study the behaviour of quantum correlations such as entanglement and steering in two-qubit systems under the application of the generalised amplitude damping channel and propose some protocols towards preserving them under this type of noise. First, we employ the technique of weak measurement and reversal for the purpose of preservation of correlations. We then show how the evolution under the channel action can be seen as an unitary process. We use the t…
Quantum state on Bloch sphere for superconducting charge qubit, phase qubit and flux qubit for all time in absence of external drive is stable to initial state. By driving the qubits, approximation of charge and flux Hamiltonian lead to quantum state rotation in Bloch sphere around an axis completely differ from rotation vector of exact Hamiltonian. The trajectory of quantum state for phase qubit for approximated and exact Hamiltonian is the same but the expectation of quantum observable has considerable errors as two other qubits. microwave drive control is designed for approximated Hamiltoni…
We consider procedures to realize an approximate universal NOT gate in terms of average fidelity and fidelity deviation. The average fidelity indicates the optimality of operation on average, while the fidelity deviation does the universality of operation. We show that one-qubit operations have a sharp trade-off relation between average fidelity and fidelity deviation, and two-qubit operations show a looser trade-off relation. The genuine universality holds for operations of more than two qubits, and those of even more qubits are beneficial to compensating imperfection of control. In addition,…
The Eastin-Knill theorem is a central result of quantum error correction theory and states that a quantum code cannot correct errors exactly, possess continuous symmetries, and implement a universal set of gates transversely. As a way to circumvent this result, there are several approaches in which one gives up on either exact error correction or continuous symmetries. In this context, it is common to employ a complementary measure of fidelity as a way to quantify quantum state distinguishability and benchmark approximations in error correction. Despite having useful properties, evaluating fid…
We demonstrate how non-Abelian geometric phases can be used to universally process a spin qubit in heavy hole quantum dots in the absence of magnetic fields. A time dependent electric quadrupole field is used to perform any desired single qubit operation by virtue of non-Abelian holonomy. During the proposed operations, the degeneracy of the time dependent two level system representing the qubit is not split. Since time reversal symmetry is preserved and hyperfine coupling is known to be weak in spin qubits based on heavy holes, we expect very long coherence times in the proposed setup.
Recently, there has been focus on determining the conditions under which the data processing inequality for quantum relative entropy is satisfied with approximate equality. The solution of the exact equality case is due to Petz, who showed that the quantum relative entropy between two quantum states stays the same after the action of a quantum channel if and only if there is a \textit{reversal channel} that recovers the original states after the channel acts. Furthermore, this reversal channel can be constructed explicitly and is now called the \textit{Petz recovery map}. Recent developments h…
The ZX-calculus is a graphical calculus for reasoning about pure state qubit quantum mechanics. It is complete for pure qubit stabilizer quantum mechanics, meaning any equality involving only stabilizer operations that can be derived using matrices can also be derived pictorially. Stabilizer operations include the unitary Clifford group, as well as preparation of qubits in the state |0>, and measurements in the computational basis. For general pure state qubit quantum mechanics, the ZX-calculus is incomplete: there exist equalities involving non-stabilizer unitary operations on single qubits w…
