Grover discovered a quantum algorithm for identifying a target element in an unstructured search universe of N items in approximately square-root of N queries to a quantum oracle, thus achieving a square-root speed-up over classical algorithms. We present an information-theoretic analysis of Grover's algorithm and show that the square-root speed-up is the best attainable result using Grover's oracle.
In standard Grover's algorithm for quantum searching, the probability of finding the marked item is not exactly 1. In this Letter we present a modified version of Grover's algorithm that searches a marked state with full successful rate. The modification is done by replacing the phase inversion by two phase rotation through angle $ϕ$. The rotation angle is given analytically to be $ϕ=2 \arcsin(\sin{π\over (4J+6)}\over \sinβ)$, where $\sinβ={1\over \sqrt{N}}$, $N$ the number of items in the database, and $J$ an integer equal to or greater than the integer part of $({π\over 2}-β)/(2β)$. Upon mea…
One of the most important quantum algorithms ever discovered is Grover's algorithm for searching an unordered set. We give a new lower bound in the query model which proves that Grover's algorithm is exactly optimal. Similar to existing methods for proving lower bounds, we bound the amount of information we can gain from a single oracle query, but we bound this information in terms of angles. This allows our proof to be simple, self-contained, based on only elementary mathematics, capturing our intuition, while obtaining at the same an exact bound.
Quantum Information Theory promises to speed up computation so is observed in real quantum computers as proved to its classical counterpart. This revolutionizes every field linked directly or indirectly with computation. Grover algorithm in quantum information gives quadratic speed up in unstructured database search. With the availability of public online resources for quantum computers like IBM, quantum image processing came into the picture for making use of quantum computers in the image processing field. Our research interest is to find all darker pixels in a 2x2 grayscale image using Grov…
In a previous paper [quant-ph/0408045] we described a quantum algorithm to prepare an arbitrary state of a quantum register with arbitrary fidelity. Here we present an alternative algorithm which uses a small number of quantum oracles encoding the most significant bits of the absolute value of the complex amplitudes, and a small number of oracles encoding the most significant bits of the phases. The algorithm given here is considerably simpler than the one described in [quant-ph/0408045], on the assumption that a sufficient amount of knowledge about the distribution of the absolute values of t…
It has been shown in recent years that quantum information has a topological nature (\cite{AC}, \cite{Co}, \cite{Co2}). In \cite{V}, Vicary undergoes the study of quantum algorithms using this new topological approach. The advantage of this new formalism is that it allows new proofs of correctness of the algorithms such as Deutsch-Jozsa, hidden subgroup and single-shot Grover algorithms. It also provide more clear insight to the generalizations of these algorithms. In this paper, we consider (multi-step) Grover algorithm from this new perspective.
We review the basic theoretical underpinnings of the Grover algorithm, providing a rigorous and well motivated derivation. We then present a generalization of Grover's algorithm that searches an arbitrary subspace of the multi-dimensional Hilbert space using a diffusion operation and an amplitude amplification procedure that has been biased by unitary {\em steering operators}. We also outline a generalized Grover's algorithm that takes into account higher level correlations that could exist between database elements. In the traditional Grover algorithm, the Hadamard gate selects a uniform samp…
The art of quantum algorithm design is highly nontrivial. Grover's search algorithm constitutes a masterpiece of quantum computational software. In this article, we use methods of geometric algebra (GA) and information geometry (IG) to enhance the algebraic efficiency and the geometrical significance of the digital and analog representations of Grover's algorithm, respectively. Specifically, GA is used to describe the Grover iterate and the discretized iterative procedure that exploits quantum interference to amplify the probability amplitude of the target-state before measuring the query regi…
We present an information geometric characterization of Grover's quantum search algorithm. First, we quantify the notion of quantum distinguishability between parametric density operators by means of the Wigner-Yanase quantum information metric. We then show that the quantum searching problem can be recast in an information geometric framework where Grover's dynamics is characterized by a geodesic on the manifold of the parametric density operators of pure quantum states constructed from the continuous approximation of the parametric quantum output state in Grover's algorithm. We also discuss …
This paper concerns the Grover algorithm that permits to make amplification of quantum states previously tagged by an Oracle. Grover's algorithm allows searches in an unstructure database of n entries finding a marked element with a quadratic speedup. The algorithm requires a predefined number of runs to succeed with probability close to one. This article provides a description of the amplitude amplification quantum algorithm mechanism in a very short computational way, based on tensor products and provides a geometric presentation of the successive system states. All the basis changes are full…
Entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum processes particularly those pertaining to quantum information and computation. An analytical expression for an entanglement measure defined in terms of success rate of Grover's search algorithm has been obtained for qutrit systems with real coefficients and the calculated results agree well with the conventional entropy based measure. The entanglement measure is further generalised for qudit (d-level) systems with real coefficients.
Grover search is a well-known quantum algorithm that outperforms any classical search algorithm. It is known that quantum correlations such as entanglement are necessary for the power of quantum computation. But entanglement is not the only kind of quantum correlations. Other quantum correlations such as quantum discord are also useful to capture some aspects of the nonclassical correlation. We investigate several kinds of correlations including both quantum and classical in the whole process of Grover search algorithm. These correlations are the concurrence, entanglement of formation, quantum…
In a recent paper (quant-ph/0506105), A S Gupta, M. Gupta and A. Pathak proposed a modified Grover algorithm that would exponentially accelerate the unsorted database search problem if the number of marked items is known. If this were true, it would represent a major fundamental breakthrough in computer science, mathematics, quantum information and other related branches of sciences. However the algorithm is not valid. We will explain it in this brief comment.
The main idea in the original Grover search (Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 325 (1997)) is to single out a target state containing the solution to a search problem by amplifying the amplitude of the state, following the Oracle's job, i.e., a black box giving us information about the target state. We design quantum circuits to accomplish a complete Grover search involving both the Oracle's job and the amplification of the target state, which are employed to solve Satisfiability (SAT) problems. We explore how to carry out the quantum circuits by currently available ion-trap quantum computing technology.
Entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum processes particularly those pertaining to quantum information and computation. An analytical expression for entanglement measure defined in terms of success rate of Grover's search algorithm has been obtained for a two-qutrit system and the calculated results agree well with the conventional entropy based measure. Qutrit system are of special interest because the Hilbert space dimensionality (for a given number of qudits-d-dimensional system)is optimal for d=3 and this may be of significance in the enhancement of computing power.
Grover's operator in the two-qubit case can transform a basis into its conjugated basis. A permutation operator can transform a state in the two conjugated bases into its orthogonal state. These properties are included in a threshold quantum protocol. The proposed threshold quantum protocol is secure based the proof that the legitimate participators can only eavesdrop 2 bits of 3 bits operation information on one two-qubit with error probability 3/8. We propose a scheme to detect the Trojan horse attack without destroying the legal qubit.
Qubits, which are quantum counterparts of classical bits, are used as basic information units for quantum information processing, whereas underlying physical information carriers, e.g. (artificial) atoms or ions, admit encoding of more complex multilevel states -- qudits. Recently, significant attention is paid to the idea of using qudit encoding as a way for further scaling quantum processors. In this work, we present an efficient decomposition of the generalized Toffoli gate on the five-level quantum systems, so-called ququints, that uses ququints' space as the space of two qubits with a joi…
In this paper, we propose a quantum amplitude estimation method that uses a modified Grover operator and quadratically improves the estimation accuracy in the ideal case, as in the conventional one using the standard Grover operator. Under the depolarizing noise, the proposed method can outperform the conventional one in the sense that it can in principle achieve the ultimate estimation accuracy characterized by the quantum Fisher information in the limit of a large number of qubits, while the conventional one cannot achieve the same value of ultimate accuracy. In general this superiority requ…
As the engineering endeavour to realise quantum computers progresses, we consider that such machines need not rely on binary as their de facto unit of information. We investigate Grover's algorithm under a generalised quantum circuit model, in which the information and transformations can be expressed in any arity, and analyse the structural and behavioural properties while preserving the semantics; namely, searching for the unique preimage to an output a function. We conclude by demonstrating that the generalised procedure retains $O(\sqrt{N})$ time complexity.
It is questionable that Grover algorithm may be more valuable than a classical one, when a partial information is given in a unstructured database. In this letter, to consider quantum search when a partial information is given, we replace the Fourier transform in the Grover algorithm with the Haar wavelet transform. We then, given a partial information $L$ to a unstructured database of size $N$, show that there is the improved speedup, $O(\sqrt{N/L})$.
The work presents an amalgam of quantum search algorithm (QSA) and quantum secret sharing (QSS). The proposed QSS scheme utilizes Grover's three-particle quantum state. In this scheme, the dealer prepares an encoded state by encoding the classical information as a marked state and shares the states' qubits between three participants. The participants combine their qubits and find the marked state as a measurement result of the three-qubit state. The security analysis shows the scheme is stringent against malicious participants or eavesdroppers. In comparison to the existing schemes, our protoc…
We show that Grover's algorithm defines a geodesic in quantum Hilbert space with the Fubini-Study metric. From statistical point of view Grover's algorithm is characterized by constant Fisher's function. Quantum algorithms changing complexity class as Shor's factorization does not preserve constant Fisher's information. An adiabatic quantum factorization algorithm in non polynomial time is presented to exemplify the result.
Using Grover algorithm, this work investigates a technique for encoding search phrases used in wildcard searches. The technique involves creating a phase Oracle that loads data into a quantum circuit together with the search terms that have been encoded. The method entails constructing a phase Oracle programmatically using encoded input information and encoded search terms. By combining Grover diffusion operator with the phase Oracle, Hadamard gates, and zero-initialized three-qubit states, a complete quantum circuit is created. Trapped ion and superconducting qubit quantum computers, which we…
We investigate the performance of Grover's quantum search algorithm on a register which is subject to loss of the particles that carry the qubit information. Under the assumption that the basic steps of the algorithm are applied correctly on the correspondingly shrinking register, we show that the algorithm converges to mixed states with 50% overlap with the target state in the bit positions still present. As an alternative to error correction, we present a procedure that combines the outcome of different trials of the algorithm to determine the solution to the full search problem. The procedu…
Grover's quantum search algorithm, involving a large number of qubits, is highly sensitive to errors in the physical implementation of the unitary operators. This poses an intrinsic limitation to the size of the database that can be practically searched. The lack of robustness of Grover's algorithm for a large number of qubits is due to quite stringent "phase-matching" condition. To overcome this limitation, Tulsi suggested a modified search algorithm [PRA 78, 022332] which succeeds as long as the errors are reproducible and reversible while Grover's algorithm fails. Such systematic errors ari…
Here we extend the concept of blind client-server quantum computation, in which a client with limited quantum power controls the execution of a quantum computation on a powerful server, without revealing any details of the computation. Our extension is to introduce a three-node setting in which an oracular quantum computation can be executed blindly. In this Blind Oracular Quantum Computation (BOQC), the oracle (Oscar) is another node, with limited power, who acts in cooperation with the client (Alice) to supply quantum information to the server so that the oracle part of the quantum computati…

Implementation of conditional phase shift gate has been a significant step, which has lead to realization of important algorithms such as Grover's search algorithm and quantum Fourier transform. This gate has so far been implemented in NMR by using coupling evolution method. We demonstrate here the implementation of the conditional phase shift gate using transition selective pulses. As an application of the gate, we demonstrate Grover's search algorithm and qua…
In this paper we discuss how we can design Hamiltonians to implement quantum algorithms, in particular we focus in Deutsch and Grover algorithms. As main result of this paper, we show how Hamiltonian inverse quantum engineering method allow us to obtain feasible and time-independent Hamiltonians for implementing such algorithms. From our approach for the Deutsch algorithm, different from others techniques, we can provide an alternative approach for implementing such algorithm where no auxiliary qubit and additional resources are required. In addition, by using a single quantum evolution, the G…
Two of the key properties of quantum physics are the no-signaling principle and the Grover search lower bound. That is, despite admitting stronger-than-classical correlations, quantum mechanics does not imply superluminal signaling, and despite a form of exponential parallelism, quantum mechanics does not imply polynomial-time brute force solution of NP-complete problems. Here, we investigate the degree to which these two properties are connected. We examine four classes of deviations from quantum mechanics, for which we draw inspiration from the literature on the black hole information parado…

Grover's Search algorithm was a breakthrough at the time it was introduced, and its underlying procedure of amplitude amplification has been a building block of many other algorithms and patterns for extracting information encoded in quantum states. In this paper, we introduce an optimization of the inversion-by-the-mean step of the algorithm. This optimization serves two purposes: from a practical perspective, it can lead to a performance improvement; from a theoretical one, it leads to a novel interpretation of the actual nature of this step. This step is a reflection, which is realized by (…
Quantum adiabatic algorithm is a method of solving computational problems by evolving the ground state of a slowly varying Hamiltonian. The technique uses evolution of the ground state of a slowly varying Hamiltonian to reach the required output state. In some cases, such as the adiabatic versions of Grover's search algorithm and Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, applying the global adiabatic evolution yields a complexity similar to their classical algorithms. However, using the local adiabatic evolution, the algorithms given by J. Roland and N. J. Cerf for Grover's search [ Phys. Rev. A. {\bf 65} 0423…
We solve the unstructured search problem in constant time by computing with a physically motivated nonlinearity of the Gross-Pitaevskii type. This speedup comes, however, at the novel expense of increasing the time-measurement precision. Jointly optimizing these resource requirements results in an overall scaling of $N^{1/4}$. This is a significant, but not unreasonable, improvement over the $N^{1/2}$ scaling of Grover's algorithm. Since the Gross-Pitaevskii equation approximates the multi-particle (linear) Schrödinger equation, for which Grover's algorithm is optimal, our result leads to a qu…
Consider the unstructured search of an unknown number l of items in a large unsorted database of size N. The multi-object quantum search algorithm consists of two parts. The first part of the algorithm is to generalize Grover's single-object search algorithm to the multi-object case and the second part is to solve a counting problem to determine l. In this paper, we study the multi-object quantum search algorithm (in continuous time), but in a more structured way by taking into account the availability of partial information. The modeling of available partial information is done simply by the …

The conventional protection of information by cryptographical keys makes no sense if a key can be quickly discovered by an unauthorized person. This way of penetration to the protected systems was made possible by a quantum computers in view of results of P.Shor and L.Grover. This work presents the method of protection of an information in a database from a spy even he knows all about its control system and has a quantum computer, whereas a database can not distinguish between operations of spy and legal user.
We present a method for realizing efficiently Grover's search algorithm in an array of coupled cavities doped with three-level atoms. We show that by encoding information in the lowest two ground states of the dopants and through the application of appropriately tuned global laser fields, the reflection operator needed for the quantum search algorithm can be realized in a single physical operation. Thus, the time steps in which Grover's search can be implemented become equal to the mathematical steps ~ O(\sqrt{N}), where N is the size of the register. We study the robustness of the implementat…
We systematically study the localization effect in discrete-time quantum walks on a honeycomb network and establish the mathematical framework. We focus on the Grover walk first and rigorously derive the limit form of the walker's state, showing it has a certain probability to be localized at the starting position. The relationship between localization and the initial coin state is concisely represented by a linear map. We also define and calculate the average probability of localization by generating random initial states. Further, coin operators varying with positions are considered and the …
The theory of decoherent histories is an attempt to derive classical physics from positing only quantum laws at the fundamental level without notions of a classical apparatus or collapse of the wave-function. Searching for a marked target in a list of N items requires Ω(N) oracle queries when using a classical computer, while a quantum computer can accomplish the same task in O{\sqrt{N}} queries using Grover's quantum algorithm. We study a closed quantum system executing Grover algorithm in the framework of decoherent histories and find it to be an exactly solvable model, thus yielding an alte…
We describe the experimental implementation of a recently proposed quantum algorithm involving quantum entanglement at the level of two qubits using NMR. The algorithm solves a generalisation of the Deutsch problem and distinguishes between even and odd functions using fewer function calls than is possible classically. The manipulation of entangled states of the two qubits is essential here, unlike the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm and the Grover's search algorithm for two bits.
Processing quantum information using quantum three-level systems or qutrits as the fundamental unit is an alternative to contemporary qubit-based architectures with the potential to provide significant computational advantages. We demonstrate a fully programmable two-qutrit quantum processor by utilizing the third energy eigenstates of two transmons. We develop a parametric coupler to achieve excellent connectivity in the nine-dimensional Hilbert space enabling efficient implementations of two-qutrit gates. We characterize our processor by realizing several algorithms like Deutsch-Jozsa, Berns…
