We propose a simple geometrical approach for finding the robustness of entanglement for Bell decomposable states of 2 otimes 2 quantum systems. It is shown that the robustness of entanglement is equal to the concurrence. We also present an analytical expression for two separable states that wipe out all entanglement of these states. Finally the random robustness of these states is also obtained.
We provide an analytical expression for optimal Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition of Bell decomposable states by using semi-definite programming. Also using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimization method, the minimum relative entropy of entanglement of Bell decomposable states has been evaluated and it is shown that the same separable Bell decomposable state lying at the boundary of convex set of separable Bell decomposable states, optimizes both Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition and relative entropy of entanglement. {\bf Keywords: Minimum relative entropy of entanglement, Semi-definite programming,…
Hilbert-Schmidt distance reduces to Euclidean distance in Bell decomposable states. Based on this, entanglement of these states are obtained according to the protocol proposed in Ref. [V. Vedral et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2275 (1995)] with Hilbert-Schmidt distance. It is shown that this measure is equal to the concurrence and thus can be used to generate entanglement of formation. We also introduce a new measure of distance and show that under the action of restricted LQCC operations, the associated measure of entanglement transforms in the same way as the concurrence transforms .
We propose a simple geometrical approach for finding the Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition of Bell decomposable states of 2 otimes 2 quantum systems. We show that in these systems, the weight of the pure entangled part in the decomposition is equal to the concurrence of the state. It is also shown that the optimized separable part of L-S decomposition minimizes the von Neumann relative entropy. We also obtain the decomposition for a class of mixed states by using some LQCC actions. It is also shown that for these states the average concurrence of L-S decomposition is equal to their concurrence.
We disprove the conjecture that structural physical approximations to optimal entanglement witnesses are separable states. The conjecture holds true for extremal decomposable entanglement witnesses.
It is well known that the support of an optimal decomposable entanglement witness is completely entangled. We add two more necessary conditions for the optimality: The orthogonal complement of the support must have a nonzero product vector; another one will be given in terms of related faces of a convex cone. With these necessary conditions, we show that there exist examples of non-optimal decomposable entanglement witnesses which are the partial transposes of positive semi-definite matrices supported on completely entangled spaces, whenever both of the local dimensions are greater than or equ…
The study of Entanglement of Formation of a mixed state of a bipartite system in high-dimensional Hilbert space is not easy in general. So, we focus on determining the amount of entanglement for a bipartite mixed state based on the concept of decomposable optimal entanglement witness (DOEW), that can be calculated as a minimum distance of an entangled state from the edge of positive partial transpose (PPT) states which has the most negative (positive) expectation value for non-PPT (bound) entangled states. We have constructed DOEWs based on the convex optimization method, then by using of it w…
In general the calculation of robustness of entanglement for the mixed entangled quantum states is rather difficult to handle analytically. Using the the convex semi-definite programming method, the robustness of entanglement of some mixed entangled quantum states such as: $2\otimes 2$ Bell decomposable (BD) states, a generic two qubit state in Wootters basis, iso-concurrence decomposable states, $2\otimes 3$ Bell decomposable states, $d\otimes d$ Werner and isotropic states, a one parameter $3\otimes 3$ state and finally multi partite isotropic state, is calculated exactly, where thus obtaine…
As it is well known, every bipartite $2\otimes 2$ density matrix can be obtained from Bell decomposable states via local quantum operations and classical communications (LQCC). Using this fact, the Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition of an arbitrary bipartite $2\otimes 2$ density matrix has been obtained through LQCC action upon Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition of Bell decomposable states of $2\otimes 2$ quantum systems, where the product states introduced by Wootters in [W. K. Wootters, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80} 2245 (1998)] form the best separable approximation ensemble for Bell decomposable st…
Entanglement witnesses (EWs) constitute one of the most important entanglement detectors in quantum systems. Nevertheless, their complete characterization, in particular with respect to the notion of optimality, is still missing, even in the decomposable case. Here we show that for any qubit-qunit decomposable EW (DEW) W the three statements are equivalent: (i) the set of product vectors obeying \bra{e,f}W\ket{e,f}=0 spans the corresponding Hilbert space, (ii) W is optimal, (iii) W=Q^Γ with Q denoting a positive operator supported on a completely entangled subspace (CES) and Γstanding for the …
We examine various notions related with the optimality for entanglement witnesses arising from Choi type positive linear maps. We found examples of optimal entanglement witnesses which are non-decomposable, but which are not `non-decomposable optimal entanglement witnesses' in the sense of [M. Lewenstein, B. Kraus, J. Cirac, and P. Horodecki, Phys. Rev. A 62, 052310 (2000)]. We suggest to use the term `PPTES witness' and `optimal PPTES witness' in the places of `non-decomposable entanglement witness' and `non-decomposable optimal entanglement witnesses' in order to avoid possible confusion. We…
It has been shown that finding generic Bell states diagonal entanglement witnesses (BDEW) for $d_{1}\otimes d_{2}\otimes ....\otimes d_{n}$ systems exactly reduces to a linear programming if the feasible region be a polygon by itself and approximately obtains via linear programming if the feasible region is not a polygon. Since solving linear programming for generic case is difficult, the multi-qubits, $2\otimes N$ and $3 \otimes 3$ systems for the special case of generic BDEW for some particular choice of their parameters have been considered. In the rest of this paper we obtain the optimal n…
We investigate the issue of finding common entanglement witness for certain class of states and extend this study to the case of Schmidt number witnesses. We also introduce the notion of common decomposable and non-decomposable witness operators which is specially useful for constructing a common witness where one of the entangled states is with a positive partial transpose. Our approach is illustrated with the help of suitable examples of qutrit systems.
The present methods for obtaining the optimal Lewenestein- Sanpera decomposition of a mixed state are difficult to handle analytically. We provide a simple analytical expression for the optimal Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition by using semidefinite programming. Specially, we obtain the optimal Lewenstein-Sanpera decomposition for some examples such as: Bell decomposable state, Iso-concurrence state, generic two qubit state in Wootters's basis, $2\otimes 3$ Bell decomposable state, $d\otimes d$ Werner and isotropic states, a one parameter $3\otimes 3$ state and finally multi partite isotropic s…
An entanglement witness (EW) is an operator that allows to detect entangled states. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such operators to be optimal, i.e. to detect entangled states in an optimal way. We show how to optimize general EW, and then we particularize our results to the non-decomposable ones; the latter are those that can detect positive partial transpose entangled states (PPTES). We also present a method to systematically construct and optimize this last class of operators based on the existence of ``edge'' PPTES, i.e. states that violate the range separability criterio…
It is shown that for a given bipartite density matrix and by choosing a suitable separable set (instead of product set) on the separable-entangled boundary, optimal Lewenstein-Sanpera (L-S) decomposition can be obtained via optimization for a generic entangled density matrix. Based on this, We obtain optimal L-S decomposition for some bipartite systems such as $2\otimes 2$ and $2\otimes 3$ Bell decomposable states, generic two qubit state in Wootters basis, iso-concurrence decomposable states, states obtained from BD states via one parameter and three parameters local operations and classical …
Entanglement is a critical resource used in many current quantum information schemes. As such entanglement has been extensively studied in two qubit systems and its entanglement nature has been exhibited by violations of the Bell inequality. Can the amount of violation of the Bell inequality be used to quantify the degree of entanglement. What do Bell inequalities indicate about the nature of entanglement?
It is shown that Smolin four-qubit bound entangled states [Phys. Rev. A, 63 032306 (2001)] can maximally violate two-setting Bell inequality similar to standard CHSH inequality. Surprisingly this entanglement does not allow for secure key distillation, so neither entanglement nor violation of Bell inequalities implies quantum security. It is also pointed out how that kind of bound entanglement can be useful in reducing communication complexity.
We analyze special class of bipartite states - so called Bell diagonal states. In particular we provide new examples of bound entangled Bell diagonal states and construct the class of entanglement witnesses diagonal in the magic basis.
We discuss general Bell inequalities for bipartite and multipartite systems, emphasizing the connection with convex geometry on the mathematical side, and the communication aspects on the physical side. Known results on families of generalized Bell inequalities are summarized. We investigate maximal violations of Bell inequalities as well as states not violating (certain) Bell inequalities. Finally, we discuss the relation between Bell inequality violations and entanglement properties currently discussed in quantum information theory.
The entanglement swapping protocol is analyzed in a relativistic setting, where shortly after the entanglement swapping is performed, a Bell violation measurement is performed. From an observer in the laboratory frame, a Bell violation is observed due to entanglement swapping taking place, but in a moving frame the order of the measurements is reversed, and a Bell violation is observed even though no entanglement is present. Although the measurement results are identical, the wavefunctions for the two frames are different--- one is entangled and the other is not. Furthermore, for boosts in a p…
It is shown that the entanglement-structure of 3- and 4-qubit states can be characterized by optimized operators of the Mermin-Klyshko type. It is possible to discriminate between pure 2-qubit entanglements and higher entanglements. A comparison with a global entanglement measure and the i-concurrence is made.
We study the Bell nonlocality of high dimensional quantum systems based on quantum entanglement. A quantitative relationship between the maximal expectation value B of Bell operators and the quantum entanglement concurrence C is obtained for even dimension pure states, with the upper and lower bounds of B governed by C.
Entanglement and Bell nonlocality are used to describe quantum inseparabilities. Bell-nonlocal states form a strict subset of entangled states. A natural question arises concerning how much territory Bell nonlocality occupies entanglement for a general two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we investigate the relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality by using lots of randomly generated two-qubit states, and give out a constraint inequality relation between the two quantum resources. For studying the upper or lower boundary of the inequality relation, we discover maximally (minimally…
By calculating entanglement measures and quantum violation of Bell-type inequality, we reveal the relationship between entanglement measure and the amount of quantum violation for a family of four-qubit entangled states. It has been demonstrated that the Bell-type inequality is completely violated by these four-qubit entangled states. The plot of entanglement measure as a function of the expectation value of Bell operator shows that entanglement measure first decreases and then increases smoothly with increasing quantum violation.
We study the relation between violation of Bell inequalities and distillability properties of quantum states. Recently, Dür has shown that there are some multiparticle bound entangled states, non-separable and non-distillable, that violate a Bell inequality. We prove that for all the states violating this inequality there exist at least one splitting of the parties into two groups such that some pure-state entanglement can be distilled, obtaining a connection between Bell inequalities and bipartite distillable entanglement.
Entanglement between two separate systems is a necessary resource to violate a Bell inequality in a test of local realism. We demonstrate that to overcome the Bell bound, this correlation must be accompanied by the entanglement between the constituent particles. This happens whenever a super-selection rule imposes a constraint on feasible local operations. As we show in an example, the necessary particle entanglement might solely result from their indistinguishability. Our result reveals a fundamental relation between the non-locality and the particle entanglement.
We discuss the relations between the violation of the CHSH Bell inequality for systems of two qubits on the one side and entanglement of formation, local filtering operations, and the entropy and purity on the other. We calculate the extremal Bell violations for a given amount of entanglement of formation and characterize the respective states, which turn out to have extremal properties also with respect to the entropy, purity and several entanglement monotones. The optimal local filtering operations leading to the maximal Bell violation for a given state are provided and the special role of t…
Franson's Bell experiment with energy-time entanglement [Phys. Rev. Lett. 62, 2205 (1989)] does not rule out all local hidden variable models. This defect can be exploited to compromise the security of Bell inequality-based quantum cryptography. We introduce a novel Bell experiment using genuine energy-time entanglement, based on a novel interferometer, which rules out all local hidden variable models. The scheme is feasible with actual technology.
We demonstrate an experiment on entanglement swapping using an optimal Bell-state measurement capable of identifying two of the four Bell-states for polarization entangled photons, which is the optimum with linear optical elements. The two final photons belong to separately created paris. They are entangled after their original partner photons have been subjected to the Bell state measurement, whose outcome determines the type of entanglement of the final photon pair. The resulting violation of Bell's inequality in both cases confirms the success of the teleportation protocol.
Bell inequality is a mathematical inequality derived using the assumptions of locality and realism. Its violation guarantees the existence of quantum correlations in a quantum state. Bell inequality acts as an entanglement witness in the sense that a pure bipartite quantum state, having nonvanishing entanglement, always violates a Bell inequality. We construct Bell-type inequalities for product states in quantum coherence theory for different measures of coherence, and find that the maximally entangled states violate these inequalities. We further show that Bell-type inequalities for relative …
We study the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality of a coupled two-qubit system, in which each qubit is coupled with one individual environment. We study how the nonequilibrium environments (with different temperatures or chemical potentials) influence the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. The nonequilibrium environments can have constructive effects on the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. Nonequilibrium thermodynamic cost can sustain the thermal energy or particle current and enhance the entanglement and the Bell nonlocality. However, the nonequilibrium conditions (characterized b…
We have studied the analytical dynamics of Bell nonlocality as measured by CHSH inequality and entanglement as measured by concurrence for two noisy qubits that have dipole-dipole interaction. The nonlocal entanglement created by the dipole-dipole interaction is found to be protected from sudden death for certain initial states.
We introduce a class of two-level multi-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, and study entanglement swapping between two systems for Bell states and the class of GHZ states in qubit systems, respectively. We give the formulas for the entanglement swapping of Bell states and GHZ states in any number of qubit systems. We further consider entanglement swapping between any number of Bell states and between any number of the introduced GHZ states, and propose a series of entanglement swapping schemes in a detailed way. We illustrate the applications of such schemes in quantum informat…
For a class of mixed two -qubit states we show that it is not possible to discriminate between states violating or non - violating Bell - CHSH inequalities, knowing only their entanglement and mixedness. For a large set of possible values of these quantities, we construct pairs of states with the same entanglement and mixedness such that one state is violating but the other is non - violating Bell - CHSH inequality.
We report on an experiment demonstrating entanglement swapping of time-frequency entangled photons. We perform a frequency-resolved Bell-state measurement on the idler photons from two independent entangled photon pairs, which projects the signal photons onto a two-color Bell state. We verify entanglement in this heralded state using two-photon interference and observing quantum beating without the use of filters, indicating the presence of two-color entanglement. Our method could lend itself to use as a highly-tunable source of frequency-bin entangled single photons.
We demonstrate a novel approach of violating position dependent Bell inequalities by photons emitted via independent photon sources in free space. We trace this violation back to path entanglement created a posteriori by the selection of modes due to the process of detection.
We address the problem of optimising entanglement witnesses when a limited fixed set of local measurements can be performed on a bipartite system, thus providing a procedure, feasible also for experiments, to detect entangled states using only the statistics of these local measurements. We completely characterize the class of entanglement witnesses of the form $W = P ^Γ$, where $Γ$ denotes partial transposition, that can be constructed from the measurements of the bipartite operators $σ_{x}\otimesσ_{x},$ $σ_{y}\otimesσ_{y}$ and $σ_{z}\otimesσ_{z}$ in the case of two-qubit systems. In particula…
Bell inequalities were meant to test quantum mechanics vs local hidden variable models, but can also be used to verify entanglement. For entanglement verification purposes one assumes the validity of quantum mechanics as well as quantum descriptions of one's measurements. With the help of these assumptions it is possible to derive a strengthened Bell inequality whose violation implies entanglement. We generalize known examples of such inequalities by relating the expectation value of the Bell operator to a particular quantitative measure of entanglement, namely the negativity. Moreover, we obt…
In order to avoid the risk of information leakage during the information mutual transmission between two authorized participants, i.e., Alice and Bob, a quantum dialogue protocol based on the entanglement swapping between any two Bell states and the shared secret Bell state is proposed. The proposed protocol integrates the ideas of block transmission, two-step transmission and unitary operation encoding together using the Bell states as the information carriers. Besides the entanglement swapping between any two Bell states, a shared secret Bell state is also used to overcome the information le…
Recently Munro, Nemoto and White (The Bell Inequality: A measure of Entanglement?, quant-ph/0102119) tried to indicate that the reason behind a state rho having higher amount of entanglement (as quantified by the entanglement of formation) than a state eta, but producing the same amount of Bell-violation, is due to the fact that the amount of mixedness (as quantified by the linearised entropy) in rho is higher than that in eta. We counter their argument with examples. We extend these considerations to the von Neumann entropy. Our results suggest that the reason as to why equal amount of Bell-v…
Bell-inequality violation and entanglement, measured by Wootters' concurrence and negativity, of two qubits initially in Werner or Werner-like states coupled to thermal reservoirs are analyzed within the master equation approach. It is shown how this simple decoherence process leads to generation of states manifesting the relativity of two-qubit entanglement measures.
We emphasize the Bell state analyzer, a beamsplitter, as an efficient means of detecting two-photon polarization entanglement. Whereas the optimal entanglement witness for spatially separated photons requires coordinated measurement in three bases, the local Bell state analyzer enables an efficient entanglement witness in a single polarization basis. We use Bayesian mean estimation to compare the efficiency of these two witnesses. We report the method and results of this comparison.
Entanglement in symmetric quantum states and the theory of copositive matrices are intimately related concepts. For the simplest symmetric states, i.e., the diagonal symmetric (DS) states, it has been shown that there exists a correspondence between exceptional (non-exceptional) copositive matrices and non-decomposable (decomposable) Entanglement Witnesses (EWs). Here we show that EWs of symmetric, but not DS, states can also be constructed from extended copositive matrices, providing new examples of bound entangled symmetric states, together with their corresponding EWs, in arbitrary odd dime…
Entanglement generated from polar molecules of two-dimensional rotation is investigated in a static electric field. The electric field modulates the rotational properties of molecules, leading to distinctive entanglement. The concurrence is used to estimate the degree of entanglement. When the electric field is applied parallel or perpendicular to the intermolecular direction, the concurrences reveal two overlapping features. Such a pronounced signature corresponds to the coexistence of all Bell-like states. The characteristics of Bell-like states and overlapping concurrences are kept independ…
We consider a Bell inequality for a continuous range of settings of the apparatus at each site. This "functional" Bell inequality gives a better range of violation for generalized GHZ states. Also a family of N-qubit bound entangled states violate this inequality for N>5.
We compare the polynomial invariants for four qubits introduced by Luque and Thibon, PRA {\bf 67}, 042303 (2003), with optimized Bell inequalities and a combination of two qubit concurrences. It is shown for various parameter dependent states from different SLOCC classes that it is possible to measure a genuine 4-qubit entanglement with these polynomials.
It is impossible to discriminate four Bell states through local operations and classical communication (LOCC), if only one copy is provided. To complete this task, two copies will suffice and be necessary. When $n$ copies are provided, we show that the distillable entanglement is exactly $n-2$.
We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to demonstrate quantum nonlocality, using Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and $W$ entanglement between atomic ensembles generated by a new developed method based on laser manipulation and{} single-photon detection.
Entanglement is a unique property of quantum systems and an essential resource for many quantum technologies. The ability to transfer or swap entanglement between systems is an important protocol in quantum information science. Entanglement between photons forms the basis of distributed quantum networks and the demonstration of photonic entanglement swapping is essential for their realization. Here an experiment demonstrating entanglement swapping from two independent multimode time-frequency entangled sources is presented, resulting in multiple heralded temporal-mode Bell states. Entanglement…
We propose a new method for detecting entanglement of two qubits and discuss its relation with the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) Bell inequality. Without the need for full quantum tomography for the density matrix we can experimentally detect the entanglement by measuring less than 9 local observables for any given state. We show that this test is stronger than the CHSH-Bell inequality and also gives an estimation for the degree of entanglement. If prior knowledge is available we can further greatly reduce the number of required local observables. The test is convenient and feasible with p…
Probabilities of measurement outcomes of two-particle entangled states give a physically transparent interpretation of the concurrence and of the I-concurrence as entanglement measures. The (I)-concurrence can thus be measured experimentally. The tight connection between these measures and Bell inequalities is highlighted.
We investigate the teleportation of the bipartite entangled states through two equally noisy quantum channels, namely mixture of Bell states. There is a particular mixed state channel for which all pure entanglement in a known Schmidt basis remain entangled after teleportation and it happens till the channel state remains entangled. Werner state channel lacks both these features. The relation of these noisy channels with violation of Bell's inequality and 2-E inequality is studied.
In a recent interesting article Chris Nagele, Ebubechukwu O. IloOkeke, Peter P. Rohde, Jonathan P. Dowling, and Tim Byrnes discuss an entanglement swapping experiment using a setup where it is possible to switch the time ordering of measurements. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the very same idea was introduced in two previous papers, and briefly address some important points related to the subject.
Quantum entanglement plays a central role in many areas of physics, from quantum information science to many-body systems. In order to grasp the essence of this phenomenon, it is fundamental to understand how different manifestations of entanglement relate to each other. In 1999, Peres conjectured that Bell nonlocality is equivalent to distillability of entanglement. The intuition of Peres was that the non-classicality of an entangled state, as witnessed via Bell inequality violation, implies that pure entanglement can be distilled from this state, hence making it useful for most quantum infor…
All the states of N qubits can be classified into N-1 entanglement classes from 2-entangled to N-entangled (fully entangled) states. Each class of entangled states is characterized by an entanglement index that depends on the partition of N. The larger the entanglement index of an state, the more entangled or the less separable is the state in the sense that a larger maximal violation of Bell's inequality is attainable for this class of state.
We present an alternative definition of quantum entanglement for bipartite system based on Bell inequality and operators' noncommutativity. A state is said to be entangled, if the maximum of CHSH expectation value $F_{\max}$ is obtain by noncommutative measures on each particle of the bipartite system; otherwise, the state is a disentangled state. A uniform measure quantifying the degree of entanglement for any state of the bipartite system is also proposed.
