It is shown that the operator sum representation for non-Markovian dynamics and the Lindblad master equation in Markovian limit can be derived from a formal solution to quantum Liouville equation for a qubit system in the presence of decoherence processes self-consistently. Our formulation is the first principle theory based on projection-operator formalism to obtain an exact reduced density operator in time-convolutionless form starting from the quantum Liouville equation for a noisy quantum computer. The advantage of our approach is that it is general enough to describe a realistic quantum computer in the presence of decoherence provided details of the Hamiltonians are known.
The modeling of natural phenomena via a Markov process --- a process for which the future is independent of the past, given the present--- is ubiquitous in many fields of science. Within this context, it is of foremost importance to develop ways to check from the available empirical data if the underlying mechanism is indeed Markovian. A paradigmatic example is given by data processing inequalities, the violation of which is an unambiguous proof of the non-Markovianity of the process. Here, our aim is twofold. First we show the existence of a monogamy-like type of constraints, beyond data proc…
Decoherence in Markovian systems can result indirectly from the action of a system Hamiltonian which is usually fixed and unavoidable. Here, we show that in general in Markovian systems, because of the system Hamiltonian, quantum information decoheres. We give conditions for the system Hamiltonian that must be satisfied if coherence is to be preserved. Finally, we show how to construct robust subspaces for quantum information processing.
We consider two non-Markovian models: Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) and non-Markovian dephasing (NMD). The memory in these models is studied from the perspective of quantum Fisher information flow. This is found to be consistent with the other well known witnesses of non-Markovianity. The two noise channels are characterized quantum information theoretically by studying their gate and channel fidelities. Further, the quantum coherence and its balance with mixedness is studied. This helps to put in perspective the role that the two noise channels can play in various facets of quantum information…
Dynamical aspects of quantum Brownian motion in a low temperature environment are investigated. We give a systematic calculation of quantum entanglement among two Brownian oscillators without invoking Born-Markov approximation widely used for the study of open systems. Our approach is suitable to probe short time dynamics at cold temperatures where many experiments on quantum information processing are performed.
We show that complete positivity is not only sufficient but also necessary for the validity of the quantum data-processing inequality. As a consequence, the reduced dynamics of a quantum system are completely positive, even in the presence of initial correlations with its surrounding environment, if and only if such correlations do not allow any anomalous backward flow of information from the environment to the system. Our approach provides an intuitive information-theoretic framework to unify and extend a number of previous results.
Non-Markovianity, as an important feature of general open quantum systems, is usually difficult to quantify with limited knowledge of how the plant that we are interested in interacts with its environment-the bath. It often happens that the reduced dynamics of the plant attached to a non-Markovian bath becomes indistinguishable from the one with a Markovian bath, if we left the entire system freely evolve. Here we show that non-Markovianity can be revealed via applying local unitary operations on the plant-they will influence the plant evolution at later times due to memory of the bath. This n…
Non-Markovianity has recently attracted large interest due to significant advances in its characterization and its exploitation for quantum information processing. However, up to now, only non-Markovian regimes featuring environment to system backflow of information (strong non-Markovianity) have been experimentally simulated. In this work, using an all-optical setup we simulate and observe the so-called weak non-Markovian dynamics. Through full process tomography, we experimentally demonstrate that the dynamics of a qubit can be non-Markovian despite an always increasing correlation between t…
Memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum systems is often believed to be beneficial for quantum information processing. In this work, we employ an experimentally controllable two-photon open system, with one photon experiencing a dephasing environment and the other being free from noise, to show that non-Markovian effect may also have a negative impact on quantum tasks such as remote state preparation: For a certain period of controlled time interval, stronger non-Markovian effect yields lower fidelity of remote state preparation, as opposed to the common wisdom that more inform…
We consider the quantum correlations (entanglement and quantum discord) dynamics of two coupled spin qubits with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction influenced by a locally external magnetic field along $z$-direction and coupled to bath spin-1/2 particles as independent non-Markovian environment. We find that with increasing $D_{z}$ and decreasing $J_{z}$, the value of entanglement and quantum discord increase for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. Not that, this growth is more for the ferromagnetic materials. In addition, we perceive that entanglement and quantum discord decreas…
The initial stages of the evolution of an open quantum system encode the key information of its underlying dynamical correlations, which in turn can predict the trajectory at later stages. We propose a general approach based on non-Markovian dynamical maps to extract this information from the initial trajectories and compress it into non-Markovian transfer tensors. Assuming time-translational invariance, the tensors can be used to accurately and efficiently propagate the state of the system to arbitrarily long timescales. The non-Markovian Transfer Tensor Method (TTM) demonstrates the coherent…
The study of open quantum systems is important for fundamental issues of quantum physics as well as for technological applications such as quantum information processing. The interaction of a quantum system with it's environment is usually detrimental for the quantum properties of the system and leads to decoherence. However, sometimes a coherent partial exchange of information takes place between the system and the environment and the dynamics of the open system becomes non-Markovian. In this article we study discrete open quantum system dynamics where single evolution step consist of local u…
The quantum entropic uncertainty relation and entanglement witness in the two-atom system coupling with the non-Markovian environments are studied by the time-convolutionless master-equation approach. The influence of non-Markovian effect and detuning on the lower bound of the quantum entropic uncertainty relation and entanglement witness is discussed in detail. The results show that, only if the two non-Markovian reservoirs are identical, increasing detuning and non-Markovian effect can reduce the lower bound of the entropic uncertainty relation, lengthen the time region during which the enta…
Markovian master equations provide a versatile tool for describing open quantum systems when memory effects of the environment may be neglected. As these equations are of an approximate nature, they often do not respect the laws of thermodynamics when no secular approximation is performed in their derivation. Here we introduce a Markovian master equation that is thermodynamically consistent and provides an accurate description whenever memory effects can be neglected. The thermodynamic consistency is obtained through a rescaled Hamiltonian for the thermodynamic bookkeeping, exploiting the fact…
The purpose of this paper is to set out the problems of modeling quantum communication and signal processing where the communication between systems via a non-Markovian channel. This is a general feature of quantum transmission lines. Our ultimate objective is to extend the networks rules that have been developed for Markovian models. To this end we recall the Hamiltonian description of such non-Markov models of transmission lines and their quantization. These have occurred in the context of non-quilibrium thermodynamics, but our interest is in the transmission lines as carriers of information…
We characterize the dynamical behavior of continuous-time, Markovian quantum systems with respect to a subsystem of interest. Markovian dynamics describes a wide class of open quantum systems of relevance to quantum information processing, subsystem encodings offering a general pathway to faithfully represent quantum information. We provide explicit linear-algebraic characterizations of the notion of invariant and noiseless subsystem for Markovian master equations, under different robustness assumptions for model-parameter and initial-state variations. The stronger concept of an attractive qua…
Steady-state manifolds of open quantum systems, such as decoherence-free subspaces and noiseless subsystems, are of great practical importance to the end of quantum information processing. Yet, it is a difficult problem to find steady-state manifolds of open quantum systems, especially of non-Markovian systems. In this paper, we propose an approach to find the steady-state manifolds, which is generally applicable to both Markovian and non-Markovian systems. Our approach is based on an arbitrarily given steady state, and by following the standard steps of the approach, the steady-state manifold…
We theoretically study the dynamical dephasing of a quantum two level system interacting with an environment exhibiting non-Markovian random telegraph fluctuations. The time evolution of the conditional probability of the environmental noise is governed by a generalized master equation depending on the environmental memory effect. The expression of the dephasing factor is derived exactly which is closely associated with the memory kernel in the generalized master equation for the conditional probability of the environmental noise. In terms of three important types memory kernels, we discuss th…
The quantum channels with memory, known as non-Markovian channels, are of crucial importance for a realistic description of a variety of physical systems, and pave ways for new methods of decoherence control by manipulating the properties of environment such as its frequency spectrum. In this work, the reduced dynamics of coin in a discrete-time quantum walk is characterized as a non-Markovian quantum channel. A general formalism is sketched to extract the Kraus operators for a $t$-step quantum walk. Non-Markovianity, in the sense of P-indivisibility of the reduced coin dynamics, is inferred f…
Quantum technologies rely on the ability to coherently manipulate, process and transfer information, encoded in quantum states, along quantum channels. Decoherence induced by the environment introduces errors, thus setting limits on the efficiency of any quantum-enhanced protocol or device. A fundamental bound on the ability of a noisy quantum channel to transmit quantum (classical) information is given by its quantum (classical) capacity. Generally, the longer is a quantum channel the more are the introduced errors, and hence the worse is its capacity. In this Letter we show that for non-Mark…
The memory effects in non-Markovian quantum dynamics can induce the revival of quantum coherence, which is believed to provide important physical resources for quantum information processing (QIP). However, no real quantum algorithms have been demonstrated with the help of such memory effects. Here, we experimentally implemented a non-Markovianity-assisted highfidelity refined Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm (RDJA) with a solid spin in diamond. The memory effects can induce pronounced nonmonotonic variations in the RDJA results, which were confirmed to follow a non-Markovian quantum process by measuri…
The quantum jump approach allows to characterize the stochastic dynamics associated to an open quantum system submitted to a continuous measurement action. In this paper we show that this formalism can consistently be extended to non-Markovian system dynamics. The results rely in studying a measurement process performed on a bipartite arrangement characterized by a Markovian Lindblad evolution. Both a renewal and non-renewal extensions are found. The general structure of non-local master equations that admit an unravelling in terms of the corresponding non-Markovian trajectories are also found…
Mixing dynamical maps describing open quantum systems can lead from Markovian to non-Markovian processes. Being surprising and counter-intuitive, this result has been used as argument against characterization of non-Markovianity in terms of information exchange. Here, we demonstrate that, quite the contrary, mixing can be understood in a natural way which is fully consistent with existing theories of memory effects. In particular, we show how mixing-induced non-Markovianity can be interpreted in terms of the distinguishability of quantum states, system-environment correlations and the informat…
We study the geometric phase of a two-level atom coupled to an environment with Lorentzian spectral density. The non-Markovian effect on the geometric phase is explored analytically and numerically. In the weak coupling limit the lowest-order correction to the geometric phase is derived analytically and the general case is calculated numerically. It is found that the correction to the geometric phase is significantly large if the spectral width is small and in this case the non-Markovian dynamics has a significant impact to the geometric phase. When the spectral width increases, the correction…
The study of open quantum systems is important for fundamental issues of quantum physics as well as for technological applications such as quantum information processing. Recent developments in this field have increased our basic understanding on how non-Markovian effects influence the dynamics of an open quantum system, paving the way to exploit memory effects for various quantum control tasks. Most often, the environment of an open system is thought to act as a sink for the system information. However, here we demonstrate experimentally that a photonic open system can exploit the information…
The non-Markovian nature of quantum systems recently turned to be a key subject for investigations on open quantum system dynamics. Many studies, from its theoretical grounding to its usefulness as a resource for quantum information processing and experimental demonstrations, have been reported in the literature. Typically, in these studies, a structured reservoir is required to make non-Markovian dynamics to emerge. Here, we investigate the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a bosonic bath and under the injection of a classical stochastic colored noise. A canonical Lindblad-like master equa…
It has been found that Markovian quantum dissipative processes, described by the Lindblad equation, may have attractive steady-state manifolds, in which dissipation and decoherence can play a positive role to quantum information processing. In this article, we show that such attractive steady-state manifolds with the same positive features as in Markovian dissipative processes can exist in the non-Markovian dissipative processes. Our finding indicates that the dissipation-assisted schemes implemented in the Markovian systems can be directly generalized to the non-Markovian systems.
The uncertainty relation is a fundamental limit in quantum mechanics and is of great importance to quantum information processing as it relates to quantum precision measurement. Due to interactions with the surrounding environment, a quantum system will unavoidably suffer from decoherence. Here, we investigate the dynamic behaviors of the entropic uncertainty relation of an atom-cavity interacting system under a bosonic reservoir during the crossover between Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. Specifically, we explore the dynamic behavior of the entropic uncertainty relation for a pair of inc…
Geometric phases have been shown to be feasible in implementing quantum gates to perform quantum information processing. For all the realistic applications, the environmental influence on the geometric phase and decoherence such as memory effects must be properly considered in order to achieve the required precision in geometric quantum computation. In this paper, we study the geometric phase for a generic open quantum system based on a microscopic model. A remarkable feature of the open system's geometric phase obtained from our theoretical formulation is that the geometric phase can be obtai…
We investigate the emergence of temperature $T$ in the system-plus-reservoir paradigm starting from the fundamental microcanonical scenario at total fixed energy $E$ where, contrary to the canonical approach, $T=T(E)$ is not a control parameter but a derived auxiliary concept. As shown by Schwinger for the regime of weak coupling $γ$ between subsystems, $T(E)$ emerges from the saddle-point analysis leading to the ensemble equivalence up to corrections ${\cal O}(1/\sqrt{N})$ in the number of particles $N$ that defines the thermodynamic limit. By extending these ideas for finite $γ$, while keepi…
Both conservation laws and practical restrictions impose symmetry constraints on the dynamics of open quantum systems. In the case of time-translation symmetry, which arises naturally in many physically relevant scenarios, the quantum coherence between energy eigenstates becomes a valuable resource for quantum information processing. In this work we identify the minimum amount of decoherence compatible with this symmetry for a given population dynamics. This yields a generalisation to higher-dimensional systems of the relation $T_2 \leq 2 T_1$ for qubit decoherence and relaxation times. It als…
We study the collective radiative decay of a system of two two-level emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide in a regime where their separation is comparable to the coherence length of a spontaneously emitted photon. The electromagnetic field propagating in the cavity-like geometry formed by the emitters exerts a retarded backaction on the system leading to strongly non-Markovian dynamics. The collective spontaneous emission rate of the emitters exhibits an enhancement or inhibition beyond the usual Dicke super- and sub-radiance due to a self-consistent coherent time-delayed feedback.
Decoherence-free state (DFS) encoding supplies a useful way to avoid the detrimental influence of the environment on quantum information processing. The DFS was previously well established in either the two subsystems locating at the same spatial position or the dynamics under the Born--Markovian approximation. Here, we investigate the exact DFS of two spatially separated quantum systems consisting of two-level systems or harmonic oscillators coupled to a common non-Markovian zero-temperature bosonic environment. The exact distance-dependent DFS and the explicit criterion for forming the DFS a…
Markovianity lies at the heart of communication problems. This in turn makes the information-theoretic characterization of Markov processes worthwhile. Data processing inequalities are ubiquitous in this sense, assigning necessary conditions for all Markov processes. We address here the problem of the information-theoretic analysis of constraints on Markov processes in the quantum regime. We show the existence of a novel class of quantum data processing inequalities called here quantum Markov monogamy inequalities. This new class of necessary conditions on quantum Markov processes is inspired …
Driven two-level system is a useful model to describe many quantum objects, particularly in quantum information processing. However, the exact master equation for such a system is barely explored. Making use of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory, we derive an exact non-Markovian master equation for the driven two-level system and show the lost feature in the perturbative treatment for this system. The perturbative treatment leads to the time-convolutionless (TCL) and the Nakajima-Zwanzig (NZ) master equations. So to this end, we derive the time-convolutionless (TCL) and the Nakajim…
We provide a rigorous construction of Markovian master equations for a wide class of quantum systems that encompass quadratic models of finite size, linearly coupled to an environment modeled by a set of independent thermal baths. Our theory can be applied for both fermionic and bosonic models in any number of physical dimensions, and does not require any particular spatial symmetry of the global system. We show that, for non-degenerate systems under a full secular approximation, the effective Lindblad operators are the normal modes of the system, with coupling constants that explicitly depend…
We study at the single-photon level the nonreciprocal excitation transfer between emitters coupled with a common waveguide. Non-Markovian retarded effects are taken into account due to the large separation distance between different emitter-waveguide coupling ports. It is shown that the excitation transfer between the emitters of a small-atom dimer can be obviously nonreciprocal by introducing between them a coherent coupling channel with nontrivial coupling phase. We prove that for dimer models the nonreciprocity cannot coexist with the decoherence-free giant-atom structure although the latte…
Many quantum information tasks rely on entanglement, which is used as a resource, for example, to enable efficient and secure communication. Typically, noise, accompanied by loss of entanglement, reduces the efficiency of quantum protocols. We develop and demonstrate experimentally a superdense coding scheme with noise, where the decrease of entanglement in Alice's encoding state does not reduce the efficiency of the information transmission. Having almost fully dephased classical two-photon polarization state at the time of encoding with concurrence $0.163\pm0.007$, we reach values of mutual …
