Non-Markovian dynamics are characterized by information backflows, where the evolving open quantum system retrieves part of the information previously lost in the environment. Hence, the very definition of non-Markovianity implies an initial time interval when the evolution is noisy, otherwise no backflow could take place. We identify two types of initial noise, where the first has the only effect of degrading the information content of the system, while the latter is essential for the appearance of non-Markovian phenomena. Therefore, all non-Markovian evolutions can be divided into two classes: noisy non-Markovian (NNM), showing both types of noise, and pure non-Markovian (PNM), implementing solely essential noise. We make this distinction through a timing analysis of fundamental non-Markovian features. First, we prove that all NNM dynamics can be simulated through a Markovian pre-processing of a PNM core. We quantify the gains in terms of information backflows and non-Markovianity measures provided by PNM evolutions. Similarly, we study how the entanglement breaking property behaves in this framework and we discuss a technique to activate correlation backflows. Finally, we show the applicability of our results through the study of several well-know dynamical models.
Understanding decoherence processes is crucial in the study of open quantum systems. In this paper, we discuss the mechanism of pure-dephasing process with a newly proposed boson-boson model, namely, a bosonic field coupled to another bosonic bath in thermal equilibrium. Our model is fully solvable and can reproduce the pure-dephasing process which is usually described by the well-known spin-boson model, therefore offering a new perspective to understanding decoherence processes in open quantum systems of high dimension. We also show that this model admits a generically non-Markovian dynamics …
Since the first derivation of non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations, their interpretation has been contentious. In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 080401 (2008)], Diósi claimed to prove that they generate "true single system trajectories [conditioned on] continuous measurement". In this Letter we show that his proof is fundamentally flawed: the solution to his non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equation at any particular time can be interpreted as a conditioned state, but joining up these solutions as a trajectory creates a fiction.
We study analytically the non-Markovianity of a spin ensemble, with arbitrary number of spins and spin quantum number, undergoing a pure dephasing dynamics. The system is considered as a part of a larger spin ensemble of any geometry with pairwise interactions. We derive exact formulas for the reduced dynamics of the system and for its non-Markovianity as assessed by the witness of Lorenzo \emph{et al.} [Phys.~Rev.~A \textbf{88}, 020102(R) (2013)]. The non-Markovianity is further investigated in the thermodynamic limit when the environment's size goes to infinity. In this limit and for finite-…
It is shown that a convex combination of two non-Markovian evolutions may lead to Markovian semigroup. This shows that convex combination of quantum evolutions displaying nontrivial memory effects may result in a perfectly memoryless evolution.
We propose a general framework for investigating a large class of stabilization problems in Markovian quantum systems. Building on the notions of invariant and attractive quantum subsystem, we characterize attractive subspaces by exploring the structure of the invariant sets for the dynamics. Our general analysis results are exploited to assess the ability of open-loop Hamiltonian and output-feedback control strategies to synthesize Markovian generators which stabilize a target subsystem, subspace, or pure-state. In particular, we provide an algebraic characterization of the manifold of stabil…

We examine the properties of open quantum systems with respect to their time evolution in different regimes, Markovian and non-Markovian. We analyze their behaviour with respect to their coherent or decoherent time evolution by means of different models and try to gain some insight into the possible correlations between Markovianity and coherence.
We propose a new characterization of non-Markovian quantum evolution based on the concept of non-Markovianity degree. It provides an analog of a Schmidt number in the entanglement theory and reveals the formal analogy between quantum evolution and the entanglement theory: Markovian evolution corresponds to a separable state and non-Markovian one is further characterized by its degree. It enables one to introduce a non-Markovinity witness -- an analog of an entanglement witness -- and a family of measures -- an analog of Schmidt coefficients -- and finally to characterize maximally non-Markovia…
It is shown that the fidelity of the dynamically evolved system with its earlier time density matrix provides a signature of non-Markovian dynamics. Also, the fidelity associated with the initial state and the dynamically evolved state is shown to be larger in the non-Markovian evolution compared to that in the corresponding Markovian case. Starting from the Kraus representation of quantum evolution, the Markovian and non-Markovian features are discerned in its short time structure. These two features are in concordance with each other and they are illustrated with the help of four models of i…
We analyze the non-Markovianity degree for random unitary evolution of d-level quantum systems. It is shown how non-Markovianity degree is characterized in terms of local decoherence rates. In particular we derive a sufficient condition for vanishing of the back ow of information.
We provide further characterization of non-Markovian quantum dynamics based on the concept of divisible dynamical maps. In analogy to entanglement witness we propose a non-Markovianity witness and introduce the corresponding measure of non-Markovianity. We also provide characterization of non-Markovianity in terms of entropic quantities, fidelity and Wigner-Yanase-Dyson skew information.
We analyze the steady state entanglement generated in a coherently coupled dimer system subject to dephasing noise as a function of the degree of Markovianity of the evolution. By keeping fixed the effective noise strength while varying the memory time of the environment, we demonstrate that non-Markovianity is an essential, quantifiable resource that may support the formation of steady state entanglement whereas purely Markovian dynamics governed by Lindblad master equations lead to separable steady states. This result illustrates possible mechanisms leading to long-lived entanglement in pure…
We provide an analysis on non-Markovian quantum evolution based on the spectral properties of dynamical maps. We introduce the dynamical analog of entanglement witness to detect non-Markovianity and we illustrate its behaviour with several instructive examples. It is shown that for a certain class of dynamical maps the shape of the body of accessible states provides a simple non-Markovianity witness.
Non-Markovian reduced dynamics of an open system is investigated. In the case the initial state of the reservoir is the vacuum state, an approximation is introduced which makes possible to construct a reduced dynamics which is completely positive.
If the dynamics of an open quantum systems is non-Markovian, its {asymptotic} state strongly depends on the initial conditions, even if the dynamics possesses an {invariant} state. This is the very essence of memory effects. In particular, the {asymptotic} state can remember and partially preserve its initial entanglement. Interestingly, even if the non-Markovian evolution relaxes to an equilibrium state, this state needs not be invariant. Therefore, the non-invariance of equilibrium becomes a clear sign of non-Markovianity.
We consider a two-level open quantum system undergoing either pure dephasing, dissipative, or multiply decohering dynamics and show that, whenever the dynamics is non-Markovian, the initial speed of evolution is a monotonic function of the relevant physical parameter driving the transition between the Markovian and non-Markovian behaviour of the dynamics. In particular, within the considered models, a speed increase can only be observed in the presence of backflow of information from the environment to the system.
We derive a stochastic hierarchy of matrix product states (HOMPS) for non-Markovian dynamics in open quantum system at finite temperature, which is numerically exact and efficient. HOMPS is obtained from the recently developed stochastic hierarchy of pure states (HOPS) by expressing HOPS in terms of formal creation and annihilation operators. The resulting stochastic first order differential equation is then formulated in terms of matrix product states and matrix product operators. In this way the exponential complexity of HOPS can be reduced to scale polynomial with the number of particles. T…
We analyze the quantum evolution represented by a time-dependent family of generalized Pauli channels. This evolution is provided by the random decoherence channels with respect to the maximal number of mutually unbiased bases. We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing back-flow of information.
We investigate the ability of correlation measures to witness non-Markovian open quantum system dynamics. It is shown that the mutual information and any entanglement measure between the system and an ancilla do not witness all non-Markovian dynamics. A correlation measure is introduced, and it is proven that, in an enlarged setting with two ancillary systems, this measure detects almost all non-Markovian dynamics, except possibly a zero-measure set of dynamics that is non-bijective in finite time-intervals. Our proof is constructive and provides different initial states detecting the non-Mark…
We introduce a measure of non-Markovianity based on the minimal amount of extra Markovian noise we have to add to the process via incoherent mixing, in order to make the resulting transformation Markovian too at all times. We show how to evaluate this measure by considering the set of depolarizing evolutions in arbitrary dimension and the set of dephasing evolutions for qubits.
Open quantum systems exhibit a rich phenomenology, in comparison to closed quantum systems that evolve unitarily according to the Schrödinger equation. The dynamics of an open quantum system are typically classified into Markovian and non-Markovian, depending on whether the dynamics can be decomposed into valid quantum operations at any time scale. Since Markovian evolutions are easier to simulate, compared to non-Markovian dynamics, it is reasonable to assume that non-Markovianity can be employed for useful quantum-technological applications. Here, we demonstrate the usefulness of non-Markovi…
We consider two non-Markovian models: Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) and non-Markovian dephasing (NMD). The memory in these models is studied from the perspective of quantum Fisher information flow. This is found to be consistent with the other well known witnesses of non-Markovianity. The two noise channels are characterized quantum information theoretically by studying their gate and channel fidelities. Further, the quantum coherence and its balance with mixedness is studied. This helps to put in perspective the role that the two noise channels can play in various facets of quantum information…
For a quantum system undergoing non-Markovian open quantum dynamics, we demonstrate a tomography algorithm based on multi-time measurements of the system, which reconstructs a minimal environment coupled to the system, such that the system plus environment undergoes unitary evolution and that the reduced dynamics of the system is identical to the observed dynamics of it. The reconstructed open quantum evolution model can be used to predict any future dynamics of the system when it is further assumed to be time-independent. We define the memory size and memory complexity for the non-Markovian o…
We derive a sharp bound as the quantum speed limit (QSL) for the minimal evolution time of quantum open systems in the non-Markovian strong-coupling regime with initial mixed states by considering the effects of both renormalized Hamiltonian and dissipator. For a non-Markovian quantum open system, the possible evolution time between two arbitrary states is not unique, among the set of which we find that the minimal one and its QSL can decrease more steeply by adjusting the coupling strength of the dissipator, which thus provides potential improvements of efficiency in many quantum physics and …
Principles of monitoring non-Markovian open quantum systems are analyzed. We use the field representation of the environment (Gardiner and Collet, 1985) for the separation of its memory and detector part, respectively. We claim the system-plus-memory compound becomes Markovian, the detector part is tractable by standard Markovian monitoring. Because of non-Markovianity, only the mixed state of the system can be predicted, the pure state of the system can be retrodicted. We present the corresponding non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equation.
Quantum non-Markovianity of a quantum noisy channel manifests typically as information backflow, characterized by the departure of the intermediate map from complete positivity, though we indicate certain noisy channels that don't exhibit this behavior. In complex systems, non-Markovianity becomes more involved on account of subsystem dynamics. Here we study various facets of non-Markovian evolution, in the context of coined quantum walks, with particular stress on disambiguating the internal vs. environmental contributions to non-Markovian backflow. For the above problem of disambiguation, we…
We study dynamics of genuine entanglement for quantum states of three and four qubits under non-Markovian dephasing. Using a computable entanglement monotone for multipartite systems, we find that GHZ state is quite resilient state whereas the W state is the most fragile. We compare dynamics of chosen quantum states with dynamics of random pure states and weighted graph states.
Non-Markovian effects arising in open quantum systems evolution have been a subject of increasing interest over the past decade. One of the most appealing features of non-Markovianity (NM) is that it captures scenarios where loss of information and coherence are reversible, and thus a temporary backflow of information from the environment to the system is possible. In this work we study the interplay between the degree of non-Markovianity and the action of time-dependent control fields in an open two-level quantum system. We find that periodical modulation of a field acting solely on the syste…
We investigate the smallest set of requirements for inducing non-Markovian dynamics in a collisional model of open quantum systems. This is done by introducing correlations in the state of the environment and analyzing the divisibility of the quantum maps from consecutive time steps. Our model and results serve as a platform for the microscopic study of non-Markovian behavior as well as an example of a simple scenario of non-Markovianity with purely contractive maps, i.e. with no back-flow of information between system and environment.
Quantum speed limit (QSL) for open quantum systems in the non-Markovian regime is analyzed. We provide a the lower bound for the time required to transform an initial state to a final state in terms of thermodynamic quantities such as the energy fluctuation, entropy production rate and dynamical activity. Such bound was already analyzed for Markovian evolution satisfying detailed balance condition. Here we generalize this approach to deal with arbitrary evolution governed by time-local generator. Our analysis is illustrated by three paradigmatic examples of qubit evolution: amplitude damping, …
Non-Markovian time-evolution of quantum systems is a challenging problem, often mitigated by employing numerical methods or making simplifying assumptions. In this work, we address this problem in waveguide QED by developing a diagrammatic approach, which performs fully analytical non-Markovian time evolution of single-photon states. By revisiting Fermi's two atom problem, we tackle the impeding question of whether rotating-wave approximation violates causality in single-photon waveguide QED. Afterward, we introduce and prove the \emph{no upper half-plane poles (no-UHP) theorem}, which connect…
We extend recent theoretical studies of entanglement dynamics in the presence of environmental noise, following the long-time interest of Krzysztof Wodkiewicz in the effects of stochastic models of noise on quantum optical coherences. We investigate the quantum entanglement dynamics of two spins in the presence of classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise, obtaining exact solutions for evolution dynamics. We consider how entanglement can be affected by non-Markovian noise, and discuss several limiting cases.
We evaluate the non-Markovian finite-temperature two-time correlation functions (CF's) of system operators of a pure-dephasing spin-boson model in two different ways, one by the direct exact operator technique and the other by the recently derived evolution equations, valid to second order in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian. This pure-dephasing spin-boson model that is exactly solvable has been extensively studied as a simple decoherence model. However, its exact non-Markovian finite-temperature two-time system operator CF's, to our knowledge, have not been presented in the lite…
We derive the explicit commutation relations for the generators of quantum dynamical semigroup - Markovian superoperator evolution, allowing the extension of Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff-type relations to general Lindblad-type evolutions. This provides a novel tool for exploring the interaction of time-dependent coherent and Markovian evolutions - a surprisingly rich set of behaviors which include deformation by coherent driving of Markovian terms, generation of new Lindblad terms from time-dependent noise and even a coherent driving term generated by the interaction of time-separated Markovian no…
We propose a complete treatment of a local in time dynamics of open quantum systems. In this approach Markovian evolution turns out to be a special case of a general non-Markovian one. We provide a general representation of the local generator which generalizes well known Lindblad representation for the Markovian dynamics. It shows that the structure of non-Markovian generators is highly intricate and the problem of their classification is still open. Simple examples illustrate our approach.
We demonstrate the relevance of complex Gaussian stochastic processes to the stochastic state vector description of non-Markovian open quantum systems. These processes express the general Feynman-Vernon path integral propagator for open quantum systems as the classical ensemble average over stochastic pure state propagators in a natural way. They are the coloured generalization of complex Wiener processes in quantum state diffusion stochastic Schrodinger equations.
We study how the number of employed modes impacts the ability to witness non-Markovian evolutions via correlation backflows in continuous-variable quantum dynamics. We first prove the existence of non-Markovian Gaussian evolutions that do not show any revivals in the correlations between the mode evolving through the dynamics and a single ancillary mode. We then demonstrate how this scenario radically changes when two ancillary modes are considered. Indeed, we show that the same evolutions can show correlation backflows along a specific bipartition when three-mode states are employed, and wher…
We consider the unitary time evolution of continuous quantum mechanical systems confined to a cavity in contact with a finite bath of variable size. Measures for Markovianity for such finite system-bath configurations are developed in terms of Hilbert-Schmidt distances of time evolving wave packets. The relevant time scales are identified, which characterize pseudo-Markovian transient behavior, boundary scattering induced non-Markovian oscillations at intermediate times, and non-Markovian rephasing events at long time scales. It is shown how these time scales can be controlled by tunable param…
It is shown that the operator sum representation for non-Markovian dynamics and the Lindblad master equation in Markovian limit can be derived from a formal solution to quantum Liouville equation for a qubit system in the presence of decoherence processes self-consistently. Our formulation is the first principle theory based on projection-operator formalism to obtain an exact reduced density operator in time-convolutionless form starting from the quantum Liouville equation for a noisy quantum computer. The advantage of our approach is that it is general enough to describe a realistic quantum c…
In this paper, we analyze the evolution of the generalized Pauli channels governed by the memory kernel master equation. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the memory kernel to give rise to the legitimate (completely positive and trace-preserving) quantum evolution. In particular, we analyze a class of kernels generating the quantum semi-Markov evolution, which is a natural generalization of the Markovian semigroup. Interestingly, the convex combination of Markovian semigroups goes beyond the semi-Markov case. Our analysis is illustrated with several examples.
The model of a multi-level system interacting with several reservoirs is considered. The exact reduced density matrix evolution could be obtained for this model without Markov approximation. Namely, this evolution is fully defined by the finite set of linear differential equations. In this work the results which were obtained previously for only one Lorentz peak in the spectral density are generalized to the case of an arbitrary number of such peaks. The case of the Ohmic contribution in the spectral density is also taken here into account.
A non-Markovianity measure for quantum channels is introduced based on causality measure - a monotone of causal (temporal) correlations - arising out of the pseudo-density matrix (PDM) formalism which treats quantum correlations in space and time on an equal footing. Using the well known damped Jaynes-Cummings model of a two-level system interacting with a bosonic reservoir at zero temperature as an example, it is shown that breakdown of monotonicity of the causality measure is associated with the revival of temporal (causal) correlations hence with the negativity of the decay rate. Also, a no…
Quantum dynamical maps provide suitable mathematical representation of quantum evolutions. It is the very notion of complete positivity which provides a proper mathematical representation of quantum evolution and gives rise to the powerful generalization of unitary evolution of closed Hamiltonian systems. A prominent example of quantum evolution of an open system is a Markovian semigroup. In what follows, we analyze both the semigroups of positive and completely positive maps. In the latter case the dynamics is governed by the celebrated Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) Master Equa…
The question, whether an open system dynamics is Markovian or non-Markovian can be answered by studying the direction of the information flow in the dynamics. In Markovian dynamics, information must always flow from the system to the environment. If the environment is interacting with only one of the subsystems of a bipartite system, the dynamics of the entanglement in the bipartite system can be used to identify the direction of information flow. Here we study the dynamics of a two-level system interacting with an environment, which is also a heat bath, and consists of a large number of two-l…
The problem of quantum metrology under the context of a particular non-Markovian quantum evolution is explored. We study the dynamics of the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of a composite quantum probe coupled to a Lorentzian environment, for a full variety of different classes of parameters. We are able to find the best metrological state which is not maximally entangled but is the one which evolves fastest. This is shown by evidencing a connection between QFI and different quantum speed limits. At the same time, by optimizing a control field acting over the probes, we show how the total inf…
The weak-coupled two-level open quantum system described by non-Markovian Time-convolution-less master equation is investigated in this paper. The cut-off frequency, coupling constant and transition frequency, which impact on the system's decay rate, coherence factor and purity, are investigated. The appropriate parameters used in system simulation experiments are determined by comparing analysis results of different values of parameters for the effects of system performance. The control laws used to transfer the system states are designed on the basis of the Lyapunov stability theorem. Numeri…
We consider a simple microscopic model where the open-system dynamics of a qubit, despite being Markovian, shows features which are typically associated to the presence of memory effects. Namely, a non monotonic behavior both in the population and in the coherence evolution arises due to the presence of non-secular contributions, which break the phase covariance of the Lindbladian (semigroup) dynamics. We also show by an explicit construction how such a non-monotonic behaviour can be reproduced by a phase covariant evolution, but only at the price of inserting some state-dependent memory effec…
An evolution of a two-level system (qubit) interacting with a single-photon wave packet is analyzed. It is shown that a hierarchy of master equations gives rise to phase covariant qubit evolution. The temporal correlations in the input field induce nontrivial memory effects for the evolution of a qubit. It is shown that in the resonant case whenever time-local generator is regular (does not display singularities) the qubit evolution never displays information backflow. However, in general the generator might be highly singular leading to intricate non-Markovian effects. A detailed analysis of …
An exactly solvable model for the multi-level system interacting with several reservoirs at zero temperatures is presented. Population decay rates and decoherence rates predicted by exact solution and several approximate master equations, which are widespread in physical literature, are compared. The space of parameters is classified with respect to different inequities between the exact and approximate rates.
Non-Markovian dynamics detection is one of the most popular subjects in the quantum information science. In this paper, a linear-entropy-based non-Markovianity witness scheme is constructed. The positive definiteness of the Choi state will be broken in the non-Markovian evolution, which can be witnessed by its linear entropy. Thus, the linear entropy of the Choi state can be used to witness the non-Markovian dynamics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by an example of the pure dephasing channel. Also, it is shown that this method can be extended to the one based on Rényi ent…
We investigate the dynamical information exchange between a two-state system and its environment which is measured by von Neumann entropy. It is found that in the underdamping regime, the entropy dynamics exhibits an extremely non-Markovian oscillation-hump feature, in which oscillations manifest quantum coherence and a hump of envelop demonstrates temporal memory of bath. It indicates that the process of entropy exchange is bidirectional. When the coupling strength increases a certain threshold, the hump along with ripple disappears, which is indicative of the coherent-incoherent dynamical cr…
