We introduce an exact open system method to describe the dynamics of quantum systems that are strongly coupled to specific types of environments comprising of spins, such as central spin systems. Our theory is similar to the established non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) theory, but for a spin bath instead of a Gaussian bath. The method allows us to represent the time-evolved reduced state of the system as an ensemble average of stochastically evolving pure states. We present a comprehensive theory for arbitrary linear spin environments at both zero and finite temperatures. Furthermore, we introduce a hierarchical expansion method that enables the numerical computation of the time evolution of the stochastic pure states, facilitating a numerical solution of the open system problem in relevant strong coupling regimes.
A dynamical treatment of Markovian diffusion is presented and several applications discussed. The stochastic interpretation of quantum mechanics is considered within this framework. A model for Brownian movement which includes second order quantum effects is derived.
We demonstrate the relevance of complex Gaussian stochastic processes to the stochastic state vector description of non-Markovian open quantum systems. These processes express the general Feynman-Vernon path integral propagator for open quantum systems as the classical ensemble average over stochastic pure state propagators in a natural way. They are the coloured generalization of complex Wiener processes in quantum state diffusion stochastic Schrodinger equations.
Capturing non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is generally a challenging problem, especially for strongly-interacting many-body systems. In this work, we combine recently developed non-Markovian quantum state diffusion techniques with tensor network methods to address this challenge. As a first example, we explore a Hubbard-Holstein model with dissipative phonon modes, where this new approach allows us to quantitatively assess how correlations spread in the presence of non-Markovian dissipation in a 1D many-body system. We find regimes where correlation growth can be enhanced by the…
We solve two long standing problems for stochastic descriptions of open quantum system dynamics. First, we find the classical stochastic processes corresponding to non-Markovian quantum state diffusion and non-Markovian quantum jumps in projective Hilbert space. Second, we show that the diffusive limit of non-Markovian quantum jumps can be taken on the projective Hilbert space in such a way that it coincides with non-Markovian quantum state diffusion. However, the very same limit taken on the Hilbert space leads to a completely new diffusive unraveling, which we call non-Markovian quantum diff…
Non-Markovian dynamics is studied for two interacting quibts strongly coupled to a dissipative bosonic environment. For the first time, we have derived the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation for the coupled two-qubit system without any approximations, and in particular, without the Markov approximation. As an application and illustration of our derived time-local QSD equation, we investigate the temporal behavior of quantum coherence dynamics. In particular, we find a strongly non-Markovian regime where entanglement generation is significantly modulated by the environmental m…
We present a perturbation theory for non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD), the theory of diffusive quantum trajectories for open systems in a bosonic environment [Physical Review {\bf A 58}, 1699, (1998)]. We establish a systematic expansion in the ratio between the environmental correlation time and the typical system time scale. The leading order recovers the Markov theory, so here we concentrate on the next-order correction corresponding to first-order non-Markovian master equations. These perturbative equations greatly simplify the general non-Markovian QSD approach, and allow for e…
We study the nonlocal non-Markovian effects through local interactions between two subsystems and the corresponding two environments. It has been found that the initial correlations between two environments can turn a Markovian to a non-Markovian regime with the extra control on the local interaction time. We further research the nonlocal non-Markovian effects from two situations: without extra control, the nonlocal non-Markovian effects only appear under the condition that two local dynamics are non-Markovian-non-Markovian(both of two local dynamics are non-Markovian), or Markovian-non-Markov…
In this paper, we use the quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to implement the Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) to a three-level quantum system coupled to a non-Markovian reservoir comprising of infinite numbers of degrees of freedom. For this purpose, we first reformulate the non-Markovian QSD to incorporate the effect of the external control fields. With this stochastic QSD approach, we demonstrate that an unknown state of the three-level quantum system can be universally protected against both colored phase and amplitude noises when the control-pulse sequences and control operators are p…
We present a nonlinear stochastic Schroedinger equation for pure states describing non-Markovian diffusion of quantum trajectories. It provides an unravelling of the evolution of a quantum system coupled to a finite or infinite number of harmonic oscillators, without any approximation. Its power is illustrated by several examples, including measurement-like situations, dissipation, and quantum Brownian motion. In some examples, we treat the environment phenomenologically as an infinite reservoir with fluctuations of arbitrary correlation. In other examples the environment consists of a finite …
Two perturbation methods for the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) equation are investigated. The first perturbation method under investigation is based on a functional expansion of the NMQSD equation, while the second one expands the NMQSD equation in terms of the coupling strength. We have compared the advantages of the two methods based on bipartite systems where the accuracy of both perturbation methods can be examined by comparing the approximations with the exact solutions. Additionally, we provide an analytical solution for a special family of system's initial states, and th…
We find dynamical invariants for open quantum systems described by the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation. In stark contrast to closed systems where the dynamical invariant can be identical to the system density operator, these dynamical invariants no longer share the equation of motion for the density operator. Moreover, the invariants obtained with from bi-orthonormal basis can be used to render an exact solution to the QSD equation and the corresponding non-Markovian dynamics without using master equations or numerical simulations. Significantly we show that we can apply t…
We study the open dynamics of a quantum two-level system coupled to an environment modeled by random matrices. Using the quantum channel formalism, we investigate different quantum Markovianity measures and criteria. A thorough analysis of the whole parameter space, reveals a wide range of different regimes, ranging from strongly non-Markovian to Markovian dynamics. In contrast to analytical models, all non-Markovianity measures and criteria have to be applied to data with fluctuations and statistical uncertainties. We discuss the practical usefulness of the different approaches.
We investigate the smallest set of requirements for inducing non-Markovian dynamics in a collisional model of open quantum systems. This is done by introducing correlations in the state of the environment and analyzing the divisibility of the quantum maps from consecutive time steps. Our model and results serve as a platform for the microscopic study of non-Markovian behavior as well as an example of a simple scenario of non-Markovianity with purely contractive maps, i.e. with no back-flow of information between system and environment.
Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (NMQSD) is an exact method for calculating the reduced density matrix of an arbitrary subsystem interacting linearly with the radiation field. Applications of the theory have however been few due to the intractable nature of the variational-differential NMQSD evolution equation. Recently, we argued that the variational-differential equation can be rewritten as an integrodifferential equation which can be readily solved numerically. This manuscript provides an explicit derivation of the modified equations. Applications to intermittent fluorescence in $^{24}…
We propose a scheme in which the cooling of a mechanical resonator is achieved by exposing the optomechanical system to a non-Markovian environment. Because of the backflow from the non-Markovian environment, the phonon number can go beyond the conventional cooling limit in a Markovian environment. Utilizing the spectrum density obtained in the recent experiment [Nature Communications 6, 7606 (2015)], we show that the cooling process is highly effective in a non-Markovian environment. The analysis of the cooling mechanism in a non-Markovian environment reveals that the non-Markovian memory eff…
We show that two, non interacting 2-level systems, immersed in a common bath, can become mutually entangled when evolving according to a Markovian, completely positive reduced dynamics.
The protocol of the teleportation of an arbitrary unknown one-qubit state is investigated when the quantum channel is subject to the decoherence from the non-Markovian environments with the memory effects. The quality of the teleportation measured by the average fidelity and minimal fidelity can be enhanced in the non-Markovian channel. The memory effects give rise to the revival of the fidelity which is better than that obtained by the Markovian channel.
We study the dynamics of a quantum system whose interaction with an environment is described by a collision model, i.e. the open dynamics is modelled through sequences of unitary interactions between the system and the individual constituents of the environment, termed "ancillas", which are subsequently traced out. In this setting non-Markovianity is introduced by allowing for additional unitary interactions between the ancillas. For this model, we identify the relevant system-environment correlations that lead to a non-Markovian evolution. Through an equivalent picture of the open dynamics, w…
Quantum non-Markovianity modifies the environmental decoherence of a system. This situation is enriched in complex systems owing to interactions among subsystems. We consider the problem of distinguishing the multiple sources of non-Markovianity using a simple power spectrum technique, applied to a qubit interacting with another qubit via a Jaynes-Cummings type Hamiltonian and simultaneously subjected to some well known noise channels, such as, the random telegraph noise and non-Markovian amplitude damping, which exhibit both Markovian as well as non-Markovian dynamics under different paramete…
It is known that one can characterize the decoherence strength of a Markovian environment by the product of its temperature and induced damping, and order the decoherence strength of multiple environments by this quantity. We show that for non-Markovian environments in the weak coupling regime there also exists a natural (albeit partial) ordering of environment-induced irreversibility within a perturbative treatment. This measure can be applied to both low-temperature and non-equilibrium environments.
We put forward a measure based on Gaussian steering to quantify the non-Markovianity of continuous-variable (CV) Gaussian quantum channels. We employ the proposed measure to assess and compare the non-Markovianity of a quantum Brownian motion (QBM) channel, originating from the interaction with Ohmic and sub-Ohmic environments with spectral densities described by a Lorentz-Drude cutoff, both at high and low temperatures, showing that sub-Ohmic, high temperature environments lead to highly non-Markovian evolution, with cyclic backflows of Gaussian steerability from the environment to the system…
We have studied the analytical Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics of quantum correlations, such as entanglement, quantum discord and Bell nonlocalities for three noisy qubits. Quantum correlation as measured by quantum discord is found to be immune to death contrary to entanglement and Bell nonlocality for initial GHZ- or W-type mixed states.
We analytically obtain the precision bounds of frequency measurements in correlated Markovian and non-Markovian environments by using a variational approach. It is verified that in standard Ramsey spectroscopy setup, the metrological equivalence of product and maximally entangled states persists in maximally correlated Markovian and non-Markovian environments. We find that the optimal measurement can achieve a much higher resolution than standard Ramsey spectroscopy in the correlated environments. When the number of particles in the maximally entangled states is even, the precision bound decre…
The degree of non-Markovianity allows to characterizing quantum evolutions that depart from a Markovian regime in a similar way as Schmidt number measures the degree of entanglement of pure states. Maximally non-Markovian dynamics are the analogous of maximally entangled states [D. Chruściński and S. Maniscalco, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 120404 (2014)]. Here, we demonstrate that there exists a class of maximally non-Markovian quantum evolutions where the associated environment (degrees of freedom not belonging to the system) obeys a Markovian (memoryless) dynamics, which in turn is unperturbed by …
Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be induced by the memory effects of a reservoir. Although a reservoir with stronger memory effects may seem like it should cause stronger non-Markovian effects on the system of interest, this seemingly intuitive thinking may not always be correct. We illustrate this by investigating a qubit (a two-level atom) that is coupled to a hierarchical environment, which contains a single-mode cavity and a reservoir consisting of infinite numbers of modes. We show how the non-Markovian character of the system is influenced by the coupling strength be…
We determine the total state dynamics of a dephasing open quantum system using the standard environment of harmonic oscillators. Of particular interest are random unitary approaches to the same reduced dynamics and system-environment correlations in the full model. Concentrating on a model with an at times negative dephasing rate, the issue of "non-Markovianity" will also be addressed. Crucially, given the quantum environment, the appearance of non-Markovian dynamics turns out to be accompanied by a loss of system-environment correlations. Depending on the initial purity of the qubit state, th…
We investigate dynamics of an optomechanical system under the Non-Markovian environment. In the weak optomechanical single-photon coupling regime, we provide an analytical approach fully taking into account the non-Markovian memory effects. When the cavity-bath coupling strength crosses a certain threshold, an oscillating memory state for the classical cavity field (called bound state) is formed. Due to the existence of the non-decay optical bound state, a nonequilibrium optomechanical thermal entanglement is preserved even without external driving laser. Our results provide a potential usage …
We consider a microscopic collision model, i.e., a quantum system interacts with a hierarchical environment consisting of an auxiliary system and a reservoir. We show how the non-Markovian character of the system is influenced by the coupling strength of system-auxiliary system and auxiliary system-reservoir, initial system-environment correlations and the coherence of environment. Then we study the relation between non-Markovianity and thermodynamics properties, by studying the entropy change of system especially that from heat exchanges with memory effects, and we reveal the essence of entro…
Controlling the non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is essential in quantum information technology since it plays a crucial role in preserving quantum memory. Albeit in many realistic scenarios the quantum system can simultaneously interact with composite environments, this condition remains little understood, particularly regarding the effect of the coupling between environmental parts. We analyze the non-Markovian behavior of a qubit interacting at the same time with two coupled single-mode cavities which in turn dissipate into memoryless or memory-keeping reservoirs. We show that…
The question, whether an open system dynamics is Markovian or non-Markovian can be answered by studying the direction of the information flow in the dynamics. In Markovian dynamics, information must always flow from the system to the environment. If the environment is interacting with only one of the subsystems of a bipartite system, the dynamics of the entanglement in the bipartite system can be used to identify the direction of information flow. Here we study the dynamics of a two-level system interacting with an environment, which is also a heat bath, and consists of a large number of two-l…
We study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics of open quantum systems focusing on the cases of independent and common environmental interactions. We investigate the degree of non-Markovianity quantified by two distinct measures proposed by Luo, Fu and Song (LFS) and Breuer, Laine and Pillo (BLP). We show that the amount of non-Markovianity, for a single and a pair of qubits, depends on the quantum process, the proposed measure and whether the environmental interaction is collective or independent. In particular, we demonstrate that while the degree of non-Markovianity generally increases with …
We analyse the role played by system-environment correlations in the emergence of non-Markovian dynamics. By working within the framework developed in Breuer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 210401 (2009), we unveil a fundamental connection between non-Markovian behaviour and dynamics of system-environment correlations. We derive an upper bound to the rate of change of the distinguishability between different states of the system that explicitly depends on the development and establishment of correlations between system and environment. We illustrate our results using a fully solvable spin-chain …
Using random matrices, we study the reduced dynamics of a two level system interacting with a generic environment. In the weak coupling limit, the result can be obtained directly from known results for purity decay, and result in Markovian dynamics. We then focus on the case of strong coupling, when the dynamics is known to be non-Markovian. In this regime, the coupling dominates over the local parts of the Hamiltonian, and thus we treat the latter as a perturbation of the former. With the help of the linear response approximation, this allows us to obtain an analytical description of the redu…
We provide an analytical investigation of the pairwise entanglement dynamics for a system, consisting an arbitrary number of qubits dissipating into a common and non-Markovian environment for both weak and strong coupling regimes. In the latter case, a revival of pairwise entanglement due to the memory depth of the environment is observed. The leakage of photons into a continuum state is assumed to be the source of dissipation. We show that for an initially Werner state, the environment washes out the pairwise entanglement, but a series of non-selective measurements can protect the relevant en…
We show that the use of a recently proposed iterative collision model with inter-environment swaps displays a signature of strongly non-Markovian dynamics that is highly dependent on the establishment of system-environment correlations. Two models are investigated; one in which such correlations are cancelled iteratively and one in which they are kept all across the dynamics. The degree of non-Markovianity, quantified using a measure based on the trace distance, is found to be much greater for all coupling strengths, when system-environment correlations are maintained.
We study non-Markovian effects present in a driven qubit coupled to a finite environment using a recently proposed model developed in the context of calorimetric measurements of open quantum systems. To quantify the degree of non-Markovianity we use the Breuer-Laine-Piilo (BLP) measure [Breuer \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 210401 (2009)]. We show that information backflow only occurs in the case of driving in which case we investigate the dependence of memory effects on the environment size, driving amplitude and coupling to the environment. We show that the degree of non-Mar…
We present an extended collision model to simulate the dynamics of an open quantum system. In our model, the unit to represent the environment is, instead of a single particle, a block which consists of a number of environment particles. The introduced blocks enable us to study the effects of different strategies of system-environment interactions and states of the blocks on the non-Markovianities. We demonstrate our idea in the Gaussian channels of an all-optical system and derive a necessary and sufficient condition of non-Markovianity for such channels. Moreover, we show the equivalence of …
In this work we generalize the quantum trajectory (QT) theory from Markovian to non-Markovian environments. We model the non-Markovian environment by using a Lorentzian spectral density function with bandwidth ($Λ$), and find perfect "scaling" property with the measurement frequency ($τ^{-1}$) in terms of the scaling variable $x=Λτ$. Our result bridges the gap between the existing QT theory and the Zeno effect, by rendering them as two extremes corresponding to $x\to\infty$ and $x\to 0$, respectively. This $x$-dependent criterion improves the idea of using $τ$ alone, and quantitatively identif…
We theoretically study the dynamical dephasing of a quantum two level system interacting with an environment exhibiting non-Markovian random telegraph fluctuations. The time evolution of the conditional probability of the environmental noise is governed by a generalized master equation depending on the environmental memory effect. The expression of the dephasing factor is derived exactly which is closely associated with the memory kernel in the generalized master equation for the conditional probability of the environmental noise. In terms of three important types memory kernels, we discuss th…
We show the connection between a witness that detects dynamical maps with initial system-environment correlations and a witness that detects non-Markovian open quantum systems. Our analysis is based on studying the role that state preparation plays in witnessing violations of contractivity of open quantum system dynamics. Contractivity is a property of some quantum processes where the trace distance of density matrices decrease with time. From this, we show how a witness of initial-correlations is an upper bound to a witness of non-Markovianity. We discuss how this relationship shows further c…
We analyze the non-Markovian character of the dynamics of an open two-level atom interacting with a gas of ultra-cold fermions. In particular, we discuss the connection between the phenomena of orthogonality catastrophe and Fermi edge singularity occurring in such a kind of environment and the memory-keeping effects which are displayed in the time evolution of the open system.
On the analytic ground we examine a physical mechanism how particle velocity can protect an entanglement when quantum system is embedded in Markovian or non-Markovian environment. In particular the effect of particle velocity is examined in the entanglement sudden death (ESD) and revival of entanglement (ROE) phenomena. Even though particles move fast, the ESD phenomenon does not disappear if it occurs at zero velocity. However the time domain $0 \leq t \leq t_*$ for nonvanishing entanglement becomes larger and larger with increasing velocity. When ROE phenomenon occurs at zero velocity, even …
In this paper we demonstrate that two commonly used phenomenological post-Markovian quantum master equations can be derived without using any perturbative approximation. A system coupled to an environment characterized by self-classical configurational fluctuations, the latter obeying a Markovian dynamics, defines the underlying physical model. Both Shabani-Lidar equation [A. Shabani and D. A. Lidar, Phys. Rev. A 71, 020101(R) (2005)] and its associated approximated integro-differential kernel master equation are obtained by tracing out two different bipartite Markovian Lindblad dynamics where…
The system-environment interaction is simulated by light propagating in coupled photonic waveguides. The profile of the electromagnetic field provides intuitive physical insight to study the Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems. The transition from non-Markovian to Markovian process is demonstrated by increasing the size of environment, as the energy evolution changes from oscillating to an exponential decay, and the revival period increases. Moreover, the dynamical decoupling with a sequence of phase modulations is introduced to such a photonic open system to form a ba…
Realistic quantum mechanical systems are always exposed to an external environment. The presence of the environment often gives rise to a Markovian process in which the system loses information to its surroundings. However, many quantum systems exhibit a pronounced non-Markovian behavior in which there is a flow of information from the environment back to the system, signifying the presence of quantum memory effects [1-5]. The environment is usually composed of a large number of degrees of freedom which are difficult to control, but some sophisticated schemes for modifying the environment have…
We present the experimental control of Non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems simulated with photonic entities. The polarization of light is used as the system, whereas the surrounding environment is represented by light's spatial structure. The control of the dynamics is achieved by the engineering of the environment via spatial interference. Using the behavior of the trace distance, we are able to identify each dynamics and characterize the position of maximum revival of information.
In this work we study the steady state entanglement between two qubits interacting asymetrically with a common non-Markovian environment. Depending on the initial two-qubit state, the asymmetry in the couplings between each qubit and the non-Markovian environment may lead to enhanced entanglement in the steady state of the system, measured in terms of the two-qubit concurrence. Our results indicate that, if a qubit-qubit interaction is also present, the two-qubit steady state concurrence is always favored by the symmetric or anti-symmetric coupling configuration. Although finite, the steady co…
We analyze precision bounds for a local phase estimation in the presence of general, non-Markovian phase noise. We demonstrate that the metrological equivalence of product and maximally entangled states that holds under strictly Markovian dephasing fails in the non-Markovian case. Using an exactly solvable model of a physically realistic finite bandwidth dephasing environment, we demonstrate that the ensuing non-Markovian dynamics enables quantum correlated states to outperform metrological strategies based on uncorrelated states using otherwise identical resources. We show that this conclusio…
In this work, we investigate the non-Markovianity, quantum Fisher information (QFI) and quantum coherence of a qubit in a nonequilibrium environment and have obtained the expressions of QFI and quantum coherence as well as their relationship. We have also discussed in detail the influences of the different noise parameters on these quantum sffects. The results show that the suitable parameters of the nonequilibrium environment can retard the QFI and quantum coherence in both Markovian and non-Markovian regions. In addition, the smaller memory effects and the larger the jumping rate, the greate…
A maximal steady-state fermionic entanglement of a nanoelectronic system is generated in finite temperature non-Markovian environments. The fermionic entanglement dynamics is presented by connecting the exact solution of the system with an appropriate definition of fermionic entanglement. We prove that the two understandings of the dissipationless non-Markovian dynamics, namely the bound state and the modified Laplace transformation are completely equivalent. For comparison, the steady-state entanglement is also studied in the wide-band limit and Born-Markovian approximation. When the environm…
We theoretically study the non-Markovian dynamics of qubit systems coupled to nonequilibrium environments with nonstationary and non-Markovian statistical properties. The reduced density matrix of the single qubit system satisfies a closed third-order differential equation with all the higher-order environmental correlations taken into account and the reduced density matrix of the two qubit system can be expressed as the Kraus representation in terms of the tensor products of the single qubit Kraus operators. We derive the relation between the entanglement and nonlocality of the two qubit syst…
Any realistic quantum system is inevitably subject to an external environment. This environment makes the open-system dynamics significant for many quantum tech-nologies, such as entangled-state engineering, quantum simulation, and quantum sensing. The information flow of a system to its environment usually induces a Markovian process, while the backflow of information from the environment exhibits non-Markovianity. The practical environment, usually consisting of a large number of degrees of freedom, is hard to control, despite some attempts on controllable transitions from Markovian to non-M…
We investigate the effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems by employing the hierarchical equations of motion in the framework of the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach. As illustrative examples, the non-Markovian memory effect of a qubit embedded in a bosonic and a fermionic environment at zero temperature are analyzed. It is found that the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to enhance the observed non-Markovianity no matter the environment is composed of bosons or fermions. This result suggests that the rotating-wave approximation ma…
We prove the Zeno limit $N^{3/2}$ of the quantum Fisher information for frequency estimation with a general initial state of $N$ two-level atoms in the presence of local non-Markovian dephasing noise, which was demonstrated for a GHZ state by A. W. Chin, S. F. Huelga, M. B. Plenio (2012). For collective dephasing we prove that non-Markovian noise allows for better scaling for both correlated and uncorelated states. The quantum enhancement in precision is at least as good as in the local case.
