Markovian master equations provide a versatile tool for describing open quantum systems when memory effects of the environment may be neglected. As these equations are of an approximate nature, they often do not respect the laws of thermodynamics when no secular approximation is performed in their derivation. Here we introduce a Markovian master equation that is thermodynamically consistent and provides an accurate description whenever memory effects can be neglected. The thermodynamic consistency is obtained through a rescaled Hamiltonian for the thermodynamic bookkeeping, exploiting the fact that a Markovian description implies a limited resolution for heat. Our results enable a thermodynamically consistent description of a variety of systems where the secular approximation breaks down.
We study the effect of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and the secular approximation (SA) on the non-Markovian behavior in the spin-boson model at zero-temperature. We find that both the RWA and SA lead to a dramatic reduction in the observed non-Markovianity. In general, non-Markovian dynamics is observed for the whole relaxation time of the system, whereas the RWA and SA lead to such dynamics only on the short time scale of the environmental correlation time. Thus, the RWA and SA are not necessarily justified in the studies of non-Markovianity although they can estimate the state of th…
Finding efficient descriptions of how an environment affects a collection of discrete quantum systems would lead to new insights into many areas of modern physics. Markovian, or time-local, methods work well for individual systems, but for groups a question arises: does system-bath or inter-system coupling dominate the dissipative dynamics? The answer has profound consequences for the long-time quantum correlations within the system. We consider two bosonic modes coupled to a bath. By comparing an exact solution to different Markovian master equations, we find that a smooth crossover of the eq…
We present a detailed microscopic derivation for a non-Markovian master equation for a driven two-state system interacting with a general structured reservoir. The master equation is derived using the time-convolutionless projection operator technique in the limit of weak coupling between the two-state quantum system and its environment. We briefly discuss the Markov approximation, the secular approximation and their validity.
For adiabatically and periodically manipulated dissipative quantum systems we derive, using Floquet theory, a simple Markovian master equation. Contrary to some previous works we explicitly take into account the time dependence of the Hamiltonian and, therefore, obtain a master equation with a time-dependent dissipative part. We illustrate our theory with two examples and compare our results with the previously proposed master equations. In particular, we consider the problem of Cooper pair pumping and demonstrate the inadequacy of the secular (rotating wave) approximation when calculating the…
Currents through quantum systems may probe non-analyticities in quantum-critical many-body ground states. For a large class of dissipative quantum critical systems we show that it is possible to obtain the reduced system dynamics in the vicinity of quantum critical points in a thermodynamically consistent way, while capturing non-Markovian effects. We achieve this by combining reaction coordinate mappings with polaron transforms. Exemplarily, we consider the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model in a transport setup, where the quantum phase transition manifests itself in the heat transfer statistics.
Master equations under appropriate assumptions are efficient tools for the study of open quantum systems. For many-body systems, subsystems of which locally couple to thermal baths and weakly interact with each other, the local approach provides a more convenient description than the global approach. However, these local master equations are believed to generate inconsistencies with the laws of thermodynamics when intersubsystem interactions exist. Here we develop an alternative local master equation by virtue of similar approximations used in deriving the traditional Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindbl…
Various engine types are thermodynamically equivalent in the quantum limit of small 'engine action'. Our previous derivation of the equivalence is restricted to Markovian heat baths and to implicit classical work repository (e.g., laser light in the semi-classical approximation). In this paper all the components, baths, batteries, and engine, are explicitly taken into account. To neatly treat non-Markovian dynamics we use mediating particles that function as a heat exchanger. We find that on top of the previously observed equivalence there is a higher degree of equivalence that cannot be achie…
We consider a simple microscopic model where the open-system dynamics of a qubit, despite being Markovian, shows features which are typically associated to the presence of memory effects. Namely, a non monotonic behavior both in the population and in the coherence evolution arises due to the presence of non-secular contributions, which break the phase covariance of the Lindbladian (semigroup) dynamics. We also show by an explicit construction how such a non-monotonic behaviour can be reproduced by a phase covariant evolution, but only at the price of inserting some state-dependent memory effec…
We compare different quantum Master equations for the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. The widely applied secular approximation (rotating wave approximation) applied in combination with the Born-Markov approximation generates a Lindblad type master equation ensuring for completely positive and stable evolution and is typically well applicable for optical baths. For phonon baths however, the secular approximation is expected to be invalid. The usual Markovian master equation does not generally preserve positivity of the density matrix. As a solution we propose a coarse-graining app…
The underlying mechanisms for one photon phase control are revealed through a master equation approach. Specifically, two mechanisms are identified, one operating on the laser time scale and the other on the time scale of the system-bath interaction. The effect of the secular and non-secular Markovian approximations are carefully examined.
In this paper we present a method to derive an exact master equation for a bosonic system coupled to a set of other bosonic systems, which plays the role of the reservoir, under the strong coupling regime, i.e., without resorting to either the rotating-wave or secular approximations. Working with phase-space distribution functions, we verify that the dynamics are separated in the evolution of its center, which follows classical mechanics, and its shape, which becomes distorted. This is the generalization of a result by Glauber, who stated that coherent states remain coherent under certain circ…
We address the structure of the Liouvillian superoperator for a broad class of bosonic and fermionic Markovian open systems interacting with stationary environments. We show that the accurate application of the partial secular approximation in the derivation of the Bloch-Redfield master equation naturally induces a symmetry on the superoperator level, which may greatly reduce the complexity of the master equation by decomposing the Liouvillian superoperator into independent blocks. Moreover, we prove that, if the steady state of the system is unique, one single block contains all the informati…
Open systems of coupled qubits are ubiquitous in quantum physics. Finding a suitable master equation to describe their dynamics is therefore a crucial task that must be addressed with utmost attention. In the recent past, many efforts have been made toward the possibility of employing local master equations, which compute the interaction with the environment neglecting the direct coupling between the qubits, and for this reason may be easier to solve. Here, we provide a detailed derivation of the Markovian master equation for two coupled qubits interacting with common and separate baths, consi…
Energy transfer through quantum coherences plays an essential role in diverse natural phenomena and technological applications, such as human vision, light-harvesting complexes, quantum heat engines, and quantum information and computing. The understanding of the long-lived coherence involved in these phenomena requires a detailed modeling of the system-bath interactions beyond the so-called secular and/or Markovian approximations. Despite continuous theoretical progress on understanding nonsecular dynamics in the last decades, convincing experimental observations are still lacking. By using t…
By use of the two measures presented recently, the indivisibility and the backflow of information, we study the non-Markovianity of the dynamics for a two-level system interacting with a zero-temperature structured environment without using rotating wave approximation (RWA). In the limit of weak coupling between the system and the reservoir, and by expanding the time-convolutionless (TCL) generator to the forth order with respect to the coupling strength, the time-local non-Markovian master equation for the reduced state of the system is derived. Under the secular approximation, the exact anal…
The study of quantum thermal machines, and more generally of open quantum systems, often relies on master equations. Two approaches are mainly followed. On the one hand, there is the widely used, but often criticized, local approach, where machine sub-systems locally couple to thermal baths. On the other hand, in the more established global approach, thermal baths couple to global degrees of freedom of the machine. There has been debate as to which of these two conceptually different approaches should be used in situations out of thermal equilibrium. Here we compare the local and global approa…
Driven two-level system is a useful model to describe many quantum objects, particularly in quantum information processing. However, the exact master equation for such a system is barely explored. Making use of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory, we derive an exact non-Markovian master equation for the driven two-level system and show the lost feature in the perturbative treatment for this system. The perturbative treatment leads to the time-convolutionless (TCL) and the Nakajima-Zwanzig (NZ) master equations. So to this end, we derive the time-convolutionless (TCL) and the Nakajim…
We provide a rigorous construction of Markovian master equations for a wide class of quantum systems that encompass quadratic models of finite size, linearly coupled to an environment modeled by a set of independent thermal baths. Our theory can be applied for both fermionic and bosonic models in any number of physical dimensions, and does not require any particular spatial symmetry of the global system. We show that, for non-degenerate systems under a full secular approximation, the effective Lindblad operators are the normal modes of the system, with coupling constants that explicitly depend…
Using a recently proposed measure for divisibility of a dynamical map, we study the non-Markovian character of a quantum evolution of a driven spin-$S$ system weakly coupled to a bosonic bath. The complete tomographic knowledge about the dynamics of the open system is obtained by the time-convolutionless master equation in the secular approximation. The derived equation can be applied to a wide range of spin-boson models with the Hermitian or non-Hermitian coupling operator in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian. Besides the influence of the environmental spectral densities, the tun…
We develop from first principles Markovian master equations suited for studying the time evolution of a system evolving adiabatically while coupled weakly to a thermal bath. We derive two sets of equations in the adiabatic limit, one using the rotating wave (secular) approximation that results in a master equation in Lindblad form, the other without the rotating wave approximation but not in Lindblad form. The two equations make markedly different predictions depending on whether or not the Lamb shift is included. Our analysis keeps track of the various time- and energy-scales associated with …
For sufficiently low reservoir temperatures, it is known that open quantum systems subject to decoherent interactions with the reservoir relax towards their ground state in the weak coupling limit. Within the framework of quantum master equations, this is formalized by the Born-Markov-secular (BMS) approximation, where one obtains the system Gibbs state with the reservoir temperature as a stationary state. When the solution to some problem is encoded in the (isolated) ground state of a system Hamiltonian, decoherence can therefore be exploited for computation. The computational complexity is t…
We derive a many-site version of the non-Markovian time-convolutionless polaron master equation [S. Jang et al., J. Chem Phys. 129, 101104 (2008)] to describe electronic excitation dynamics in multichromophoric systems. By treating electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in a combined frame (polaron frame), this theory is capable of interpolating between weak and strong exciton-phonon coupling and is able to account for initial non-equilibrium bath states and spatially correlated environments. Besides outlining a general expression for the expected value of any electronic system observab…
We derive the stochastic equations and consider the non-Markovian dynamics of a system of multiple two-level atoms in a common quantum field. We make only the dipole approximation for the atoms and assume weak atom-field interactions. From these assumptions we use a combination of non-secular open- and closed-system perturbation theory, and we abstain from any additional approximation schemes. These more accurate solutions are necessary to explore several regimes: in particular, near-resonance dynamics and low-temperature behavior. In detuned atomic systems, small variations in the system ener…
We introduce an alternative way to derive the generalized form of the master equation recently presented by J. P. Pekola et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 030401 (2010)] for an adiabatically steered two-level quantum system interacting with a Markovian environment. The original derivation employed the effective Hamiltonian in the adiabatic basis with the standard interaction picture approach but without the usual secular approximation. Our approach is based on utilizing a master equation for a non-steered system in the first super-adiabatic basis. It is potentially efficient in obtaining higher-or…

A quantum two-state system, weakly coupled to a heat bath, is traditionally studied in the Born-Markov regime under the secular approximation with completely positive linear master equations. Despite its success, this microscopic approach exclusively predicts exponential decays and Lorentzian susceptibility profiles, in disagreement with a number of experimental findings. To leave this limited paradigm, we use a phenomenological positive nonlinear master equation being both thermodynamically and statistically consistent. We find that, beyond a temperature-dependent threshold, a bifurcation in …
We study the effect of Markovian environmental noise on the dynamics of a two-level quantum system which is steered adiabatically by an external driving field. We express the master equation taking consistently into account all the contributions to the lowest non-vanishing order in the coupling to the Markovian environment. We study the master equation numerically and analytically and we find that, in the adiabatic limit, a zero-temperature environment does not affect the ground state evolution. As a physical application, we discuss extensively how the environment affects Cooper pair pumping. …
Thermodynamics entails a set of mathematical conditions on quantum Markovian dynamics. In particular, strict energy conservation between the system and environment implies that the dissipative dynamical map commutes with the unitary system propagator. Employing spectral analysis we prove the general form of the ensuing master equation. We compare this result to master equations obtained from standard microscopic derivations. The obtained formal structure can be employed to test the compatibility of approximate derivations with thermodynamics. For example, it designates that global master equat…
When deriving a master equation for a multipartite weakly-interacting open quantum systems, dissipation is often addressed \textit{locally} on each component, i.e. ignoring the coherent couplings, which are later added `by hand'. Although simple, the resulting local master equation (LME) is known to be thermodynamically inconsistent. Otherwise, one may always obtain a consistent \textit{global} master equation (GME) by working on the energy basis of the full interacting Hamiltonian. Here, we consider a two-node `quantum wire' connected to two heat baths. The stationary solution of the LME and …

We develop a systematic field-theoretical approach to open quantum systems based on condensed-matter many-body methods. The time evolution of the reduced density matrix for the open quantum system is determined by a transmission matrix. Developing diagrammatic perturbation theory, invoking Wick's theorem in connection with a Caldeira-Leggett quantum oscillator environment in thermal equilibrium, the transmission matrix satisfies a Dyson equation characterized by an irreducible kernel. Unlike the Nakajima-Zwanzig and standard approaches, the Dyson equation is equivalent to a general non-Markovi…
Solids can be cooled by driving impurity ions with lasers, allowing them to transfer heat from the lattice phonons to the electromagnetic surroundings. This exemplifies a quantum thermal machine, which uses a quantum system as a working medium to transfer heat between reservoirs. We review the derivation of the Bloch-Redfield equation for a quantum system coupled to a reservoir, and its extension, using counting fields, to calculate heat currents. We use the full form of this equation, which makes only the weak-coupling and Markovian approximations, to calculate the cooling power for a simple …
The Lindblad form guarantees complete positivity of a Markovian quantum master equation (QME). However, its microscopic derivation for a quantum system weakly interacting with a thermal bath requires several approximations, which may result in inaccuracies in the QME. Recently, various Lindbladian QMEs were derived without resorting to the secular approximation from the Redfield equation which does not guarantee the complete positivity. Here we explicitly calculate, in a perturbative manner, the equilibrium steady states of these Lindbladian QMEs. We compare the results with the steady state o…
