We compare different quantum Master equations for the time evolution of the reduced density matrix. The widely applied secular approximation (rotating wave approximation) applied in combination with the Born-Markov approximation generates a Lindblad type master equation ensuring for completely positive and stable evolution and is typically well applicable for optical baths. For phonon baths however, the secular approximation is expected to be invalid. The usual Markovian master equation does not generally preserve positivity of the density matrix. As a solution we propose a coarse-graining approach with a dynamically adapted coarse graining time scale. For some simple examples we demonstrate that this preserves the accuracy of the integro-differential Born equation. For large times we analytically show that the secular approximation master equation is recovered. The method can in principle be extended to systems with a dynamically changing system Hamiltonian, which is of special interest for adiabatic quantum computation. We give some numerical examples for the spin-boson model of cases where a spin system thermalizes rapidly, and other examples where thermalization is not reached.
We demonstrate how the dynamical coarse-graining approach can be systematically extended to higher orders in the coupling between system and reservoir. Up to second order in the coupling constant we explicitly show that dynamical coarse-graining unconditionally preserves positivity of the density matrix -- even for bath density matrices that are not in equilibrium and also for time-dependent system Hamiltonians. By construction, the approach correctly captures the short-time dynamics, i.e., it is suitable to analyze non-Markovian effects. We compare the dynamics with the exact solution for hig…
We show how to recover complete positivity (and hence positivity) of the Redfield equation via a coarse grain average technique. We derive general bounds for the coarse graining time scale above which the positivity of the Redfield equation is guaranteed. It turns out that a coarse grain time scale has strong impact on the characteristics of the Lamb shift term and implies in general non-commutation between the dissipating and the Hamiltonian components of the generator of the dynamical semi-group. Finally we specify the analysis to a two-level system or a quantum harmonic oscillator coupled t…
The density matrix is a widely used tool in quantum mechanics. In order to determine its evolution with respect to time, the Liouville-von Neumann equation must be solved. However, analytic solutions of this differential equation exist only for simple cases. Additionally, if the equation is coupled to Maxwell's equations to model light-matter interaction, the resulting equation set -- the Maxwell-Bloch or Maxwell-Liouville-von Neumann (MLN) equations -- becomes nonlinear. In these advanced cases, numerical methods are required. Since the density matrix has certain mathematical properties, the …
The quantification of the quantumness of a quantum ensemble has theoretical and practical significance in quantum information theory. We propose herein a class of measures of the quantumness of quantum ensembles using the unitary similarity invariant norms of the commutators of the constituent density operators of an ensemble. Rigorous proof shows that they share desirable properties for a measure of quantumness, such as positivity, unitary invariance, concavity under probabilistic union, convexity under state decomposition, decreasing under coarse graining, and increasing under fine graining.…
The Caldeira-Leggett master equation as an example of Markovian master equation without Lindblad form is investigated for mathematical consistency. We explore situations both analytically and numerically where the positivity violations of the density operator occur. We reinforce some known knowledge about this problem but also find new surprising cases. Our analytical results are based on the full solution of the Caldeira-Leggett master equation obtained via the method of characteristics. The preservation of positivity is mainly investigated with the help of the density operator's purity and w…
In a large variety of spectroscopical applications Bloch-Boltzmann equations (BBE) play an essential role. They describe the evolution of the reduced density operator of an active atom which is coupled to radiation (Bloch part) and which interacts collisionally with the perturber gas (Boltzmann part). The standard approach to the collisional part is well-known from the literature. It preserves hermiticity and normalization, but the question whether it preserves positivity seems to remain open. The completely positive BBE were recently derived via the general master equation techniques. These t…
We derive and solve analytically the non-Markovian master equation for harmonic quantum Brownian motion proving that, for weak system-reservoir couplings and high temperatures, it can be recast in the form of the master equation for a harmonic oscillator interacting with a squeezed thermal bath. This equivalence guarantees preservation of positivity of the density operator during the time evolution and allows one to establish a connection between the dynamics of Schrödinger cat states in squeezed environments and environment-induced decoherence in quantum Brownian motion.
Several quantum gravity approaches and field theory on an evolving lattice involve a discretization changing dynamics generated by evolution moves. Local evolution moves in variational discrete systems (1) are a generalization of the Pachner evolution moves of simplicial gravity models, (2) update only a small subset of the dynamical data, (3) change the number of kinematical and physical degrees of freedom, and (4) generate a dynamical coarse graining or refining of the underlying discretization. To systematically explore such local moves and their implications in the quantum theory, this art…
We study the reduced time-evolution of open quantum systems by combining quantum-information and statistical field theory. Inspired by prior work [EPL 102, 60001 (2013) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 050402 (2013)] we establish the explicit structure guaranteeing the complete positivity (CP) and trace-preservation (TP) of the real-time evolution expansion in terms of the microscopic system-environment coupling. This reveals a fundamental two-stage structure of the coupling expansion: Whereas the first stage defines the dissipative timescales of the system --before having integrated out the environm…
We introduce a systematic approximation for an efficient evaluation of Born--Markov master equations for steady state transport studies in open quantum systems out of equilibrium: the energy resolved master equation approach. The master equation is formulated in the eigenbasis of the open quantum system and build successively by including eigenstates with increasing grandcanonical energies. In order to quantify convergence of the approximate scheme we introduce quality factors to check preservation of trace, positivity and hermiticity. Furthermore, we discuss different types of master equation…
We develop a Markovian master equation in the Lindblad form that enables the efficient study of a wide range of open quantum many-body systems that would be inaccessible with existing methods. The validity of the master equation is based entirely on properties of the bath and the system-bath coupling, without any requirements on the level structure within the system itself. The master equation is derived using a Markov approximation that is distinct from that used in earlier approaches. We provide a rigorous bound for the error induced by this Markov approximation; the error is controlled by a…
Divisible dynamical maps play an important role in characterizing Markovianity on the level of quantum evolution. Divisible maps provide important generalization of Markovian semigroups. Usually one analyzes either completely positive or just positive divisibility meaning that the corresponding propagators are defined in terms of completely positive or positive maps, respectively. For maps which are invertible at any moment of time the very existence of propagator is already guaranteed and hence the only issue is (complete) positivity and trace-preservation. However, for maps which are not inv…
We study compound systems with a classical sector and a quantum sector. Among other consistency conditions we require a canonical structure, that is, a Lie bracket for the dynamical evolution of hybrid observables in the Heisenberg picture, interpolating between the Poisson bracket and the commutator. Weak and strong postulates are proposed. We explicitly construct one such hybrid bracket when the Hilbert space of the quantum sector is finite dimensional and show that it is unique if the strong postulates are enforced. The adjoint bracket for the Schrodinger picture version of the dynamics is …
Here we present a Lindblad master equation that approximates the Redfield equation, a well known master equation derived from first principles, without significantly compromising the range of applicability of the Redfield equation. Instead of full-scale coarse-graining, this approximation only truncates terms in the Redfield equation that average out over a time-scale typical of the quantum system. The first step in this approximation is to properly renormalize the system Hamiltonian, to symmetrize the gains and losses of the state due to the environmental coupling. In the second step, we swap…
We treat several key stochastic equations for non-Markovian open quantum system dynamics and present a formalism for finding solutions to them via canonical perturbation theory, without making the Born-Markov or rotating wave approximations (RWA). This includes master equations of the (asymptotically) stationary, periodic, and time-nonlocal type. We provide proofs on the validity and meaningfulness of the late-time perturbative master equation and on the preservation of complete positivity despite a general lack of Lindblad form. More specifically, we show how the algebraic generators satisfy …
