We show that one can formulate an algebra with lattice ordering so as to contain one quantum and five classical operations as opposed to the standard formulation of the Hilbert space subspace algebra. The standard orthomodular lattice is embeddable into the algebra. To obtain this result we devised algorithms and computer programs for obtaining expressions of all quantum and classical operations within an orthomodular lattice in terms of each other, many of which are presented in the paper. For quantum disjunction and conjunction we prove their associativity in an orthomodular lattice for any triple in which one of the elements commutes with the other two and their distributivity for any triple in which a particular one of the elements commutes with the other two. We also prove that the distributivity of symmetric identity holds in Hilbert space, although it remains an open problem whether it holds in all orthomodular lattices, as it does not fail in any of over 50 million Greechie diagrams we tested.
We introduce residuated ortholattices as a generalization of -- and environment for the investigation of -- orthomodular lattices. We establish a number of basic algebraic facts regarding these structures, characterize orthomodular lattices as those residuated ortholattices whose residual operation is term-definable in the involutive lattice signature, and demonstrate that residuated ortholattices are the equivalent algebraic semantics of an algebraizable propositional logic. We also show that orthomodular lattices may be interpreted in residuated ortholattices via a translation in the spirit …
The daseinisation is a mapping from an orthomodular lattice in ordinary quantum theory into a Heyting algebra in topos quantum theory. While distributivity does not always hold in orthomodular lattices, it does in Heyting algebras. We investigate the conditions under which negations and meets are preserved by daseinisation, and the condition that any element in the Heyting algebra transformed through daseinisation corresponds to an element in the original orthomodular lattice. We show that these conditions are equivalent, and that, not only in the case of non-distributive orthomodular lattices…
We consider orthomodular posets endowed with a symmetric difference. We call them ODPs. Expressed in the quantum logic language, we consider quantum logics with an XOR-type connective. We study three classes of "almost Boolean" ODPs, two of them defined by requiring rather specific behaviour of infima and the third by a Boolean-like behaviour of Frink ideals. We establish a (rather surprising) inclusion between the three classes, shadding thus light on their intrinsic properties. (More details can be found in the Introduction that follows.) Let us only note that the orthomodular posets pursued…
There are six different mathematical formulations of the symmetry group in quantum mechanics, among them the set of pure states $\mathbf{P}$ -- i.e., the set of one-dimensional projections on a complex Hilbert space $H$ -- and the orthomodular lattice $\mathbf{L}$ of closed subspaces of $H$. These six groups are isomorphic when the dimension of $H$ is $\geq 3$. Despite of the difficulties caused by $M_2(\mathbb{C})$, rank two algebras are used for quantum mechanics description of the spin state of spin-$\frac12$ particles, there is a counterexample for Uhlhorn's version of Wigner's theorem for…
