The physical resources available to access and manipulate the degrees of freedom of a quantum system define the set $\cal A$ of operationally relevant observables. The algebraic structure of $\cal A$ selects a preferred tensor product structure i.e., a partition into subsystems. The notion of compoundness for quantum system is accordingly relativized. Universal control over virtual subsystems can be achieved by using quantum noncommutative holonomies
Subsystems of entangled quantum systems are not traditionally described in a local way. This paper begins to address the issue by constructing an explicit local hidden variable theory for quantum subsystems. The interpretation is based on a modified sum-over-paths approach, where the paths of the subsystem obtain information about the external system during interactions. The interpretation utilizes the conception that there is a dissociation between the tensor product structure of wavefunctions and information flow into quantum subsystems.
We investigate the most general notion of a private quantum code, which involves the encoding of qubits into quantum subsystems and subspaces. We contribute to the structure theory for private quantum codes by deriving testable conditions for private quantum subsystems in terms of Kraus operators for channels; establishing an analogue of the Knill-Laflamme conditions in this setting. For a large class of naturally arising quantum channels, we show that private subsystems can exist even in the absence of private subspaces. In doing so, we also discover the first examples of private subsystems t…
It is assumed that an arbitrary composite bipartite pure state in which the two subsystems are entangled is given, and it is investigated how the entanglement transmits the influence of measurement on only one of the subsystems to the state of the opposite subsystem. It is shown that any exact subsystem measurement has the same influence as ideal measurement on the opposite subsystem. In particular, the distant effect of subsystem measurement of a twin observable, i. e., so-called 'distant measurement', is always ideal measurement on the distant subsystem no matter how intricate the direct exa…
We generalize a recently discovered example of a private quantum subsystem to find private subsystems for Abelian subgroups of the $n$-qubit Pauli group, which exist in the absence of private subspaces. In doing so, we also connect these quantum privacy investigations with the theory of quasiorthogonal operator algebras through the use of tools from group theory and operator theory.
This paper addresses and expands on the contents of the recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 030502 (2013)] discussing private quantum subsystems. Here we prove several previously presented results, including a condition for a given random unitary channel to not have a private subspace (although this does not mean that private communication cannot occur, as was previously demonstrated via private subsystems) and algebraic conditions that characterize when a general quantum subsystem or subspace code is private for a quantum channel. These conditions can be regarded as the private analogue of t…
There are many ways to decompose the Hilbert space H of a composite quantum system into tensor product subspaces. Different subsystem decompositions generally imply different interaction Hamiltonians V, and therefore different expectation values for subsystem observables. This means that thE uniqueness of physical predictions is not guaranteed, despite the uniqueness of the total Hamiltonian H and the total Hilbert space. Here we use Clausius' version of the second law of thermodynamics (CSL) and standard identifications of thermodynamic quantities to identify possible subsystem decompositions…
We present general conditions for quantum error suppression for Hamiltonian-based quantum computation using subsystem codes. This involves encoding the Hamiltonian performing the computation using an error detecting subsystem code and the addition of a penalty term that commutes with the encoded Hamiltonian. The scheme is general and includes the stabilizer formalism of both subspace and subsystem codes as special cases. We derive performance bounds and show that complete error suppression results in the large penalty limit. To illustrate the power of subsystem-based error suppression, we intr…
The development of quantum control methods is an essential task for emerging quantum technologies. In general, the process of optimizing quantum controls scales very unfavorably in system size due to the exponential growth of the Hilbert space dimension. Here, I present a scalable subsystem-based method for quantum optimal control on a large quantum system. The basic idea is to cast the original problem as a robust control problem on subsystems with requirement of robustness in respect of inter-subsystem couplings, thus enabling a drastic reduction of problem size. The method is in particular …
Codeword stabilized quantum codes provide a unified approach to constructing quantum error-correcting codes, including both additive and non-additive quantum codes. Standard codeword stabilized quantum codes encode quantum information into subspaces. The more general notion of encoding quantum information into a subsystem is known as an operator (or subsystem) quantum error correcting code. Most operator codes studied to date are based in the usual stabilizer formalism. We introduce operator quantum codes based on the codeword stabilized quantum code framework. Based on the necessary and suffi…
Many of the contemporary formulations of quantum mechanics describe the marginal probability distributions of entangled many-body systems in a non-local way. Unlike the non-locality of joint distributions, the non-locality of marginal distributions is not forced by theory or experiment. This paper investigates the issue in the context of the Copenhagen, de Broglie-Bohm and sum-over-paths interpretations. A dissociation between information flow into quantum subsystems and the tensor product structure of wavefunctions is highlighted in connection to the problem.
Quantum information processing requires a high degree of isolation from the detrimental effects of the environment as well as an extremely precise level of control on the way quantum dynamics unfolds in the information-processing system. In this paper, we show how these two goals can be ideally achieved by hybridizing the concepts of noiseless subsystems and of holonomic quantum computation. An all-geometric universal computation scheme based on non-adiabatic and non-Abelian quantum holonomies embedded in a four-qubit noiseless subsystem for general collective decoherence is proposed. The impl…
A local description of quantum subsystems can be used to construct ontologies of the full quantum predictions. This paper communicates one possible way to do so. A retrocausal interpretation of quantum mechanics where the de Broglie-Bohm particles are the retrocausal agents is developed. This interpretation is constrained to be compatible with the existence of a local realist description of quantum subsystems.
Given any two classical codes with parameters $[n_1,k,d_1]$ and $[n_2,k,d_2]$, we show how to construct a quantum subsystem code in 2-dimensions with parameters $[[N,K,D]]$ satisfying $N\le 2n_1n_2$, $K=k$, and $D=\min(d_1,d_2)$. These quantum codes are in the class of generalized Bacon-Shor codes introduced by Bravyi. We note that constructions of good classical codes can be used to construct quantum codes that saturate Bravyi's bound $KD=O(N)$ on the code parameters of 2-dimensional subsystem codes. One of these good constructions uses classical expander codes. This construction has the addi…
The strong subadditivity condition for the density matrix of a quantum system, which does not contain subsystems, is derived using the qudit-portrait method. An example of the qudit state in the seven-dimensional Hilbert space corresponding to spin j = 3 is presented in detail. New entropic inequalities in the form of subadditivity condition and strong subadditivity condition for spin tomograms determining the qudit states are obtained and given on examples of j = 2 and 3.
This paper provides a general theory for characterizing and constructing a decoherence-free (DF) subsystem for an infinite dimensional linear open quantum system. The main idea is that, based on the Heisenberg picture of the dynamics rather than the commonly-taken Schrodinger picture, the notions of controllability and observability in control theory are employed to characterize a DF subsystem. A particularly useful result is a general if and only if condition for a linear system to have a DF component; this condition is used to demonstrate how to actually construct a DF dynamics in some speci…

The relation between genuine multipartite entanglement in the pure state of a collection of N qubits and the nonclassical correlations in its two-qubit subsystems is studied. Quantum discord is used as the quantifier of nonclassical correlations in the subsystem while the generalised geometric measure (GGM) [Phys. Rev. A. 81, 012308 (2010)] is used to quantify global entanglement in the N-qubit state. While no definite discernible dependence between the two can be found for randomly generated global states, for those with additional structure like weighted graph states we find that local disco…
Characterization and categorization of quantum correlations are both fundamentally and practically important in quantum information science. Although quantum correlations such as non-separability, steerability, and non-locality can be characterized by different theoretical models in different scenarios with either known (trusted) or unknown (untrusted) knowledge of the associated systems, such characterization sometimes lacks unambiguous to experimentalist. In this work, we propose the physical interpretation of nonlocal quantum correlation between two systems. In the absence of {\it complete …
Decoherence-free subsystems have been successfully developed as a tool to preserve fragile quantum information against noises. In this letter, we develop a structure theory for decoherence-free subsystems. Based on it, we present an effective algorithm to construct a set of maximal decoherence-free subsystems in the sense that any other such subsystem is a subspace of one of them. As an application of these techniques in quantum many body systems, we propose a simple and numerically robust method to determine if two irreducible tensors are repeated, a key step in deciding if they are equivalen…
We introduce the informational correlation $E^{AB}$ between two interacting quantum subsystems $A$ and $B$ of a quantum system as the number of arbitrary parameters $φ_i$ of a unitary transformation $U^A$ (locally performed on the subsystem $A$) which may be detected in the subsystem $B$ by the local measurements. This quantity indicates whether the state of the subsystem $B$ may be effected by means of the unitary transformation applied to the subsystem $A$. Emphasize that $E^{AB}\neq E^{BA}$ in general. The informational correlations in systems with tensor product initial states are studied …
Hamiltonian theory of hybrid quantum-classical systems is used to study dynamics of the classical subsystem coupled to different types of quantum systems. It is shown that the qualitative properties of orbits of the classical subsystem clearly indicate if the quantum subsystem does or does not have additional conserved observables.
Quantum discord-breaking channels were previously defined as the local channels that act on subsystem $A$ to produce classical-quantum states across system $AB$. However, unlike entanglement, discord is asymmetric. Here, we characterise the discord-breaking channels that act on subsystem $B$, thus completing the overall description of discord-breaking channels. We then introduce the notion of discord-annihilating channels, which act globally on system $AB$ to destroy quantum discord, and find their closed form. Discord-annihilating channels have clear operational description, involving subspac…
This paper investigates the relationship between subsystems and time in a closed nonrelativistic system of interacting bosons and fermions. It is possible to write any state vector in such a system as an unentangled tensor product of subsystem vectors, and to do so in infinitely many ways. This requires the superposition of different numbers of particles, but the theory can describe in full the equivalence relation that leads to a particle-number superselection rule in conventionally defined subsystems. Time is defined as a functional of subsystem changes, thus eliminating the need for any ref…
Spontaneous synchronisation is a collective phenomenon that can occur in both dynamical classical and quantum systems. Here, we analyse the spontaneous synchronisation dynamics of vibrations assisting energy transfer in a bio-inspired system. We find the emergence of a constant non-zero `synchronisation phase' between synchronised vibrational displacements as the natural frequencies of the oscillators are detuned. This phase difference arises from the asymmetric participation of local modes in the long-lived synchronised state. Furthermore, we investigate the relationships between the synchron…
